I ebayed my Fire and got the n7 at launch. Well now after a few weeks I'm ready to eBay and upgrade again. The n7 is not doing it for me. The response time make the device unusable. Typing is painful.
What does everyone plan on getting next cause I'm ready now.

What I find amusing is that you have made 6 posts about the Nexus 7, the first being July 20th.
A couple about trying to use VPN with pptpd, 3 about keyboards, and 1 about how to spend your free $25 Google Play dollars you got when you purchased the Nexus 7.
NONE about slowness or anything related to your OP here.
In March you had this gem to say...
Anyone else hesitant to order after rumors of Google $150/$200 Tablet?

Response time? Are you serious? Are we talking about the Nexus 7? By the way anything you get that isn't a nexus 7 is a downgrade, Best tablet ever. I'm going to be with this for a very long time.

Well I'd really rather keep it. Even typing this I'm having to hit keys multiple times. Very annoying.
No one else having these issues at all?
Perhaps I have a dud? Anyone know how difficult it is to get a replacement from Google?
No issues here, using swiftkey.

I most likely will stay with the N7, but *IF* I were to trade this in, I would most likely get the Galaxy Note tablet soon to be released. For me, having a fine-tip pressure sensitive stylus would be awesome. However, after having so many tablets, I think the 7" form factor is the perfect size. Now if Samsung comes out with a Note 7...I would be hard pressed to stay with the N7.

Right I thought I was having keyboard problems which is why I tried 3-4 different ones and hated a few. (krelvinaz knows what I'm taking about since he keeps tabs on my posts). Now I believe I wasn't actually having problems with swiftkey 3 or swype but that I'm getting flakey touch responses. Currently have Thumbs installed and still have to hit the letters a couple of times for them to register. Just went back to the stock keyboard and same thing is happening. I have to key really slow to make sure every letter touch activates.
Here's another odd thing, I just installed the app Multi Tough Visual Test so see if indead I was having problems with my touch screen and every click and gesture I do, even with multiple touches all register. I even tapped super fast and still I see everything showing up. So this leads me to believing the hardwares fine.
I do have it rooted, perhaps if I have time I'll do a backup and factory reset and/or try a custom ROM.
I'd simply warranty the thing out. Your problems are clearly not typical of the nexus 7 experience.
Well I did a factory reset and response times are better. I can actually type now. Using SwiftKey keyboard for a try.
Only installed keyboards and titanium backup. I'll slowly start adding back my apps.

+1. I'm having the same touchscreen issues with mine, going to call up Google for an exchange tomorrow.
I'm not having the lag issue when I type, but I get it pretty badly when scrolling around Chrome and various other apps. Early the lag was so bad that I turned it off for a few minutes, then when I booted it back up, there was a red outline surrounding the entire screen for about a minute, then went back to normal. I'm just going to return it tomorrow.

Maybe I am just too picky, but when I buy something I expect the damned thing to work. I am near ready to just say give me a different phone. I am tired of it not working.
For the record though, I love my Atrix. The only accessory I do not own so far is the lap top dock which I just can't justify the cost yet when I have so many other computers already.
Squeaky wheel gets the grease though I guess.
Did you get each of them from the same location? Did you record the serial numbers by chance.
Some people seem to be having quite a lot of trouble while others are not, so maybe there is a bad batch out there. It would be nice to be able to identify it.

Wow, I must be really lucky because mine has been absolutely flawless. The microphone is on the weaker side, but that seems to be a characteristic of this model.

I am just as lucky as you are. 3 Phones later:
#1: Flawless, fast, perfect, no lag no glitch no hangup. Purchased the day the phone came out. 1 Month and 2 weeks later...I went to check a text message and it never turned on again (tried everything). I miss that perfect phone, it was too perfect it probably killed itself.
#2: They sent me a used/refurbished/barely touched phone...I don't care what you call it. It would glitch and randomly restart a lot, the LED notification would blink when I had no messages, emails, etc. The unlock slider would move and freeze for a few long seconds before unlocking the phone.
#3: I am currently using this phone. It works well enough for me not to send it back for yet ANOTHER used/refurbished/barely touched phone. The camera app likes to not work when I need it the most and my LED light app does the same thing, it likes to disappear or not work. I re-installed these apps but same thing. Its probably just Android. The phone, while fast, does not seem as fast as my 1st phone. It has its hangups and issues but not enough for me to bother. Hopefully not a hardware issue.
And I am 90% positive that if I need a 4th phone, even after the first 3, they still will not just give me a new one.
I'm sort of freaking out of all these issues I see in the forums. I received my nexus 7 last night, and it seemed ok but now I'm reading of all these problems. I'll have to wait until later in the day until I can check.
So while I'm waiting I wonder who has actually gotten a good Nexus 7. If you go by most of these threads you'd think no one.

Mine is defective. It doesn't have any screen separation, light bleed, rattling sounds, or lag. I'm gonna have to return it.
I got two good ones.
Mine is perfectly fine. Bought from GP store. 16GB model. No light bleed, no separation, no squeaks or creaks. Only issue is flicker when light set at 0 when reading in bed in the dark. But this occurred on all my other tabs as well so no biggie. Only flickers if wifi is actively doing something.
I ordered two, one on the 5th and the other on the 17th. The one I ordered on the 5th has the lifted screen issue, but the other N7 is perfect. No other issues on the first N7.
No issues here

I don't think that's accurate. I purchased my N7 from Sam's Club on Friday the 13th and didn't notice the screen lifting until today. Just got back from returning it.
People who are saying "no problem here" need to wait a while and then make absolutely sure that their display is flush on the left side.
As for whether or not this is the minority defect you're claiming it to be, right now I'm only listening to those posters who have discovered the problem and used their replacement tablet for a week. Seeing as the device has only been on sale for a week, these people don't exist yet. They're the only ones who know what to look for, and I'll be waiting to see how this develops before re-ordering.
Sorry for not staying on topic, but it bugs me that someone is dismissing my experience as an anomaly and blatantly making up stats to do it.

True, but that doesn't mean that I saw a ghost because someone told me a story. The screen was in fact lifting ever so slightly on the left side. I was concerned that it might get worse over time, so I returned it. Also, I had a single dead pixel near the top of the screen and part of me was looking for a reason.
I agree that most people who do receive a "defective" unit will never notice it, and would not complain if they did, unless it gets worse.
Whew I feel somewhat better

For those who say their device isnt defective . Can you test your digitizer? See if touching the lower part of your screen cancels out each other or if multiple touches causes some points not to register.
Please report back ... there's a know issue with the digitizer not registering on the first batch of N7's from the play store.
Here's the programs to test with :

IMO all the problems are < 1% problems except
GPS - fixed
touchscreen issues - workaround for 70-80% of bad units
random reboots - still ongoing
You're missing out on a great device while you're waiting. There's nothing wrong with either my wifi or my lte N7. I bought the wifi n7 early enough to see what the GPS issue was, but that was completely fixed with a system update. I don't see the multi touch issue or the random reboots. I did have one reboot on one of my tablets, but that was immediately after I plugged in a micro USB reader, so it was pretty obviously the cause. I have a Samsung Note 8 also, and I can tell you both my N7s work far, far more reliably. neither of my N7s have the very annoying random freezes of my Note 8. Buy one, and if you find something wrong with it, return it. Simple enough.

This. If these reported problems are common then I'm one of the lucky ones. Not a single problem with mine and it works beautifully. Easily the best buy of any comparable tablet.
I'm curious to see what ROMs and development support the Kindle HDX will have. Hopefully more developers will take full advantage of its better hardware and if so, that would be something I would consider for the same price.

Most people seem to have good experiences with this device, even though there's the casual hiccup (few reboots and the like). I suppose I could always return the device and wait some more month if there's any mayor issue with it.

I voted yes before I saw you wanted a 16GB version. So, I change to no.
I first got a 16GB with many problems. Later got 32GB and with updates its working fine.
If you cannot return the 16GB it is a big risk (my opinion, obviously biased), but if return allowed you should be safe.

Interesting...Do other people have less or none issues with their 32GB device? Shouldn't it have the same issues, considering it's almost the same device?
Asus just used several different brands of LCD. The problem started with Google released a patch that fixed the few that had issues and now the majority have issues. Some were fixed and some were broken. Some are hardware related (with deadzones) but most are correctable. There are several patches available already from Sfhub in this forum. It takes a little trial and error to find a good one FOR YOU but it works.
Exchanging them until you find one that works doesn't mean it will work after you update a few Google updates. My 32gb was flawless out of the box until the 2nd update "touchscreen fix" that introduced the bug to most.
Fortunately it is found that it is correctable with a software fix and we're just waiting on Google to give us a good fix that encompasses all screen types.
If you want to pick one up, I'd suggest you should do so, especially if you are comfortable with flashing community fixes. I don't have any issues after the patch was flashed. Its also real easy to do.
So the N7 doesn't really have any big flaws hardware wise, which seems like it is just a buggy touchscreen driver or a combination of one driver not working the best across multiple screens. Google will fix it. I'm sure of it.

Buy it now!
There seems to be a lot of focus on the touch screen issue for good reason. There is little focus on the RANDOM RESTART/REBOOT ISSUE.
I personally have had no touchscreen issues in my 2 units. I returned the first unit for multiple random restarts/reboots.
My second unit went through 3 on Wednesday in quick succession for some unknown reason but has been stable since then and previously stable for 150 hours (6 ish days). If you are curious, here is the google product forum with posts about random restarts/reboots. To date it is unacknowledged by Google and is extremely frustrating for me not knowing if the device will randomly choose to reboot.
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/nexus/nexus-7/mG4JXaT-SHs%5B926-950-false%5D
The device is now 20 days old and I have 10 left in my "exchange" window with my supplier. Theytypically want to replicate issues prior to exchanging which is an interesting dilemma for a random event. My first device rebooted a lot during youtube videos and I was able to replicate that for them. This current unit has recently shut down prior to google app updates. This is not a reboot exactly as it sounds the shutdown tone and then requires a manual restart to find a google app (gmail once, maps once and dont remember the third) awaiting to be d/l'd or installed.
Don't forget the uncertainty of random reboots!!! Annoying, frustrating, not as functionally impacting as a touch screen that doesn't work but still a significant defect.
H/W; S/W; H/W Marginality (timing most likely or ram issues)??? who knows

For me I'll wait until LG G Pad 8.3 release maybe next month, will beat N7, but the only downside with LG is UPDATES.
I have owned a Nexus 7 2nd gen for a couple months now and have just started to get random flashes of black (occurs for not even a quarter second) ...
I am wondering what causes this...
I have not damaged the Nexus in any way and bought it brand new..
I have only used CleanRom and PA ROM...
The functionality of the tablet remains great, but the flashes are very annoying ...I have tried clean installing multiple times but the flashes still happen...
Any feedback/solutions would be a big help...

I had that happen soon enough for a return to be viable. Do some more Google searching and you'll find people who fixed this as a hardware issue. They had to open the back and fiddle a connection. Didn't sound to hard but I just went to best buy instead.
Happy hunting, sorry I don't have a link.

Yea I would exchange it before it is too late. Doesn't seem that troublesome but if it got worse, or worst, disconnected entirely, it would bring bad news.

Yea I would exchange it before it is too late. Doesn't seem that troublesome but if it got worse, or worst, disconnected entirely, it would bring bad news.

Its very intermittent...some days it won't do it at all and some it does it just a bit ....I bought it off eBay around the time it was first released so I'm not sure how I would go about exchanging it ....

What specific piece of hardware is causing this?
I still have this issue from time to time ..
I've notices it happens a lot less if I turn off auto brightness and manually turn brightness above 45-50 percent...

Just because you bought it off ebay doesn't mean it doesn't still carry the 1 year manufacturer warranty on the hardware. It would require you to send it in, but worth a shot.
Once you pop the back and start fiddling with hardware, you run the risk of doing enough damage where Asus will void the warranty. I think I would check with Asus first before resorting to hardware modifications.

I should send it in to Asus you say?
What are the requirements to have it repaired/replaced under warranty as I have already rooted it with a custom rom
