Hey all. New member here hoping to spend a lot of time with this group. I finally decided on getting a tablet and have been going back and forth between a few choices. My number one choice at this point is the Eee Pad Transformer. The price and specs are right where I want to be. Is anyone using this device as strictly a tablet? Most reviews I read seem to rave about the keyboard dock. I'm not interested in using it as a laptop, just a tablet. I notice too that this device's hardware is setup to use it primarily horizontal, where as other tablets are set up vertical. Any insight into the tablet aspect of this device would be great.
I don't have the dock, and frankly I think it's a waste of money. You can get a BT keyboard if you really need one, and I don't see the need for more battery life. Asus should have the smaller USB adapters out soon, which is more practical I think, but even there I don't know that it's necessary for many users.
Just my opinion.

I hope it happens soon i realy needing a usb port now eheh
I think it's nice they offer it, but I didn't want a netbook.
Strictly a tablet for me.
I had to send my keyboard dock in for a RMA, otherwise I'd probably be using it with the dock right now. That said, it works great as just a tablet, although at this time it's difficult to obtain the official Asus desktop dock, so you'll have to rely on a third party case if you want to stand it upright while using it.
Whether or not you choose to use it mostly as a tablet or as a netbook is up to you. Personally I try to keep it on the dock for the majority of my applications, only switching to tablet mode if I need to read or browse the internet while sitting on a couch. The only real downside to using the Transformer in tablet mode is that you'll need an adapter for connecting USB devices, but the same can be said for many of the other popular Android tablets of today. The keyboard dock is by no means necessary for full functionality of the device, rather it is more of a supplemental peripheral for those of us who still need a hardware keyboard and USB ports in order to get our work done.
As far as the primary orientation of the device, landscape orientation is preferred for many Android tablets because they have a wider screen aspect ratio than the iPad, but that doesn't mean that the devices don't function well in portrait mode. In fact, the cameras and UI work just fine on any orientation, with only a few apps lacking portrait mode support. Other than that, the headphone port might be a little awkward to access while in portrait mode, so you can either rotate it the other way with the power button on the bottom, or do what I did and use a right angle headphone plug to make things easier.
I use it as a tablet. I may get the keyboard eventually but I don't need it now.

I called today to get an RMA number for my defective dock because of the Battery Drain of Death. From 100% to 0% in 3 days with the tablet turned off is ridiculous. Paying for shipping out of my pocket to send to their Texas plant is also ridiculous.
People who need to buy a keyboard doc go buy it locally so you can return it if you get the Battery Drain of Death. I bought it from Newegg and waited a few months thinking a firmware update would fix the issue. Sure you see that silly useless "MobileDock Battery saving mode" box checked but still doesn't work. Its not a firmware issue its a hardware "chip" needing replacement issue. Wont work right until you RMA it wasting your time and money in the process.
I haven't even bought the dock.
I got my TF 3 months ago,now i use it for mainly two things:web browsing,and watching videos.Indoors,BTW.
I don't see the need for a dock...

Yeah, it's annoying if you bought a dock that has that issue, but Asus isn't under pressure to issue a recall unless it's a matter of safety, which it isn't. Additionally, new docks no longer have that issue, so it makes no difference whether you buy locally or online because you won't likely have to deal with a RMA. I remember when I first bought mine there wasn't even the option to buy from a local retailer, as Best Buy and others simply didn't have any stock, and the employees had no idea that the Transformer even existed.
I paid about $20 to ship the device back to Asus, so it's a minor annoyance for me. I can't speak directly for Asus, but I'll bet the low price point of the tablet is the reason why you have to pay for return shipping in case you need to RMA. On the other hand, if you look at another popular device maker like Apple, the price point is significantly higher, but they have a storefront that you can return the device to, and you typically get it back within a day or two for minor issues.
Basically you get what you paid for.
I didn't really feel the need for a KB dock (because like most, I have a few laptops laying around and I want to use the transformer strictly as a tablet) but i happened to stroll through Fry's Electronics and picked one up on a whim. Needless to say, I'm using the dock 90% of the time.
no keyboard here, wanted just the tablet, love my tf101, tried others and found this best all rounder
I don't own the keyboard. I would probably use it sometimes if I had one, but I'm pretty happy with just the tablet.
II think I use both pretty evenly. I watch a crapload of stuff with it as a tablet, but when I have to type actual documents, or do some work, or chat online (not video) then I attach the dock. I also watch stuff with the dock attached so I don't have to charge it next to an outlt. However, the keyboard lag in the browsers is more noticeable with the keyboard since I type a lot faster. Hmm, I would wait on the keyboard if you have other things to use.
I use my transformer for web browsing, watching movies and email mostly. Next year when I replace the Transformer I may buy a dock if Asus offer it for the next model of tablet.
I dont have the dock either, I'm going to get it eventually because I can see its uses.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App
I use it as both, depending on where I am, how I'm situated, what I'm doing, etc... which is exactly why I got it, it can do either one quite well, imo.
I wanted a device to replace my 13" macbook pro which i just use at home on the couch for surfing the web, ssh, playing music, simple image editing and viewing...originally got the mac for traveling abroad, so I can use it to upload pics/videos whenever I found a wifi hotspot.
Whole family (including my parents who are around their 70s and their learning curve to user interfaces isn't so "hot") made the move to just using Toshiba Thrives at home. Made me a tiny bit curious on how they'd catch on, what the user experience would be and it seems to be a hit...parents are video chatting more, surfing more news websites and reading ebooks.
So, I decided to get the TF101 since it's the only tablet out there which suits my needs (has the dock/mini hdmi/micro sd/sd/more usb slots), EXCEPT for the fact that it doesn't have 3G. Thought, what the heck, I'll buy it, check out honeycomb and see if i like it, then sell it off or give it to another family member when the 3g version comes out eventually (travel a lot, buy prepaid sim cards...cheaper to use prepaid internet since tethering might be chargeable later with providers).
Well, minus the fact that ad hoc didn't work to begin with and i had to root it and now having problems, it's a somewhat nice device and I'm 75% happy with it. I use only the tablet when I'm in a comfortable websurfing frame of mind and generally use the dock when I'm IRCing or writing documents.
To be honest, I hate the onscreen keyboard on this device, partly cause there's no "haptic" feedback (i.e. vibration, sounds). Tend to see more errors in my typing, so I don't bother.
I have both tab and dock
And how I use them depends on what I am trying to do. The other day I used the two together to type a long email reply. A few weeks ago I went on holiday for a week and I just took the tablet, leaving the dock at home. If I'm getting the train to work I tend to take the tablet only. If I'm driving, I take both. At the moment I'm reading a book on Kindle and I'm just using it as a tablet.
Just tablet for me.
Will probably never buy the dock as I find it pointless since I already have a netbook.
I started with a netbook and ended up with a tablet.
I love the dock and still occasionally use it. If you need to type up docs in polaris or emails its much faster. The big thing though is the battery. 16 hours is silly, its virtually impossible to kill the thing in a day with the dock. Play games, movies and work a full day and its still got plenty of charge.
Being said, I havent docked mine in a month. Not because I dont like it but because I got my girlfriend a TF during the period where Office Depot was honoring the Staples coupon and she stole my dock. She uses it about 50-50. Its perfect for her as a PHD student, she needs something mobile to hold documents has she moves between labs (they all have computers but they are supporting research equipment). She loves it as a netbook. The only thing she misses is a VGA port (most projectors are VGA). If projectors moved to HDMI or there was a good, small adapter she would never need to carry my old business book.
She actually laughs now because she keeps poking the monitors on people's computers, since she basically has a touch screen laptop she subconsciously thinks all computers should be like that.
For casual travel I opt to steal the dock from her and take it myself, leave my massive laptop at home. Its a nice laptop (SSD, 3ghz quad, dedicated video card, LED) but its big and heavy. With the tablet I can do 80% of the things (99% of the things I need to do when on vacation instead of business travel) and using Splashtop HD I can control the laptop from anywhere so I can do work from aruba if needed without carrying a heavy laptop.
Hi folks over A500 forum, i'm thinking to get myself an A500, but i afraid that i'll regret buying this tablet, because i've read some quite hmmm.... negative feedback about it.
some says that the charger wouldnt charge [i can assume that he has a faulty unit], poor mic, gps, unresponsive keyboard, weak wifi. So can anyone of you kindly enough to tell me what can i expect this tablet will be weak at?
I can tolerate at the poor camera quality though.
Please tell me, thanks!~
I have not found any issues at all with my tab. It is not an A500 but may as well be. (Gateway A60 running A500 roms). I use it at work and at home.
This tablet is pretty much perfect. The camera quality is fine as far as I am concerned (Front and rear), it is easily rootable, even if you install the OTA updates and the price point is where it needs to be.
The only thing that I have been on the lookout for is ICS but so far I am OK with HC. Way better than the Froto on my gtablet.

Backup my tab with T B
BACKUP MY TAB AGAIN IN RECOVERY..
After all of the above.. my tablet fits my life Perfectly..
As already said by others, weak GPS, keyboard kinda sucks, glossy screen that really shows finger prints, etc. What I haven't seen mentioned, is the inability to properly play HD mkv's, most ppl will say you don't need high quality on tablet, and they are right, but, what if you want to hook your tab to a hotel TV to watch HD, etc. There also seems to be a lot of stuff in the market that is not compatible with this tab (specifically for me, mybuick and onstar)
That being said, having a usable USB port is pretty handy, the micro SD,(missing on the Zoom) micro HDMI are all nice to have. Microphone works well for apps like Skype as long as you use headphones.
You should be using headphones for video conversations anyway, otherwise the mic picks up the sounds coming from the speaker and then you have yourself a poorstorm of feedback.
I have never had any sort of keyboard issue with my tab. This is actually the first I heard of any sort of keyboard issue.
The rear camera is 5 megapixels, so expect 5 megapixel quality. Except for the newest Tegra3 tabs, this is the best camera you can get on a tablet.
You have to expect that this tablet comes from the first generation of real Android tablets that hi the market. As a result, you have to expect that there will be some issues with it. The good thing is that devs has created fixes for common problems (like GPS, wifi etc) so if you are someone who is in to rooting, this is a great tablet.

So true.. MY TAB WORKS Well as stated above.. But it does not come without some work... i have read forums of other tablets. we have less trouble then average..
Oh ok, thx for those feedbacks! BTW, have any of you suffer from keyboard delay? I played Transformer, G Tab10.1, and A500 at the store before, and fall in love with the port and weight of this tablet. But the thing that frustrated me is the keyboard delay it has[btw, i dont really know what happened on that tablet though]
And how was the wifi strength? I heard reports say that it drops quickly?
I love my a500 and should you learn to root and flash you'll uncover the real power and potential in the device. that being said it should be mentioned the a500 is old tech that is going to be replaced by newer more powerful models this year. as these models come out the cutting edge developers will migrate and Dec on the a500 will slow down somewhat. this does not mean the a500 isn't a good purchase option. its great hardware that with the right software is just amazing. but it is on the backside of its lifespan and that carries some downfalls that should be mentioned.
A501, same as A500 except with 3g...
I've never had wifi dropouts, either at home or at work.
The public wifi at work is pretty bad but I have never had a problem logging on and its never dropped out.
Keyboard, again no issue here...
Haven't really played with GPS properly but do use co-pilot. I do find we seem to have pretty bad satellite reception here in OZ but when I have played around it seems pretty reliable, but again only done short trips...
Love the USB, this is why I bought the Acer A501 in the 1st place, no other tab had one. Expandable memory also a BIG plus...
I like the fact I can attach a 1Tb HDD and use this on my tab too...
No real problems, aside from the locked bootloaders Acer insists on sticking on its tabs, most things are fairly good.
I love my A500, but after taking it to meetings and with me pretty much all the time, I find it a bit heavy. I use it almost exclusively professionally and end up using dropbox more than USB drives. I would probably go with a GT10.1 because of the weight and thickness.
Thanks guy! but i bought the G Tab 10.1 instead of A500, because it is really a lot lighter than A500, and my dad prefers it more ;D
Thanks anyway!
Picked up my A500 from The Source on a boxing day special price. It was a bit of an impulse, but also a bit of tech jealousy as my cousin had bought one the week before so he could learn to program apps for it and I got to play with it a bit on New Years. ANYWAYS. I loved it right away, and the prospect of rooting it was pretty awesome.
I have zero faults with this machine. It looks great, works great, was easily unlocked/rooted, and there is a ton of support on this forum. I just keep trying out new roms (4 diff. builds so far) and new kernels (on my 3rd one of those), and I'm having a lot of fun with it.
Only drawback is that I didn't buy one sooner.
picking one up today... 32GB for $220 I think its a fair deal...main reason i would even consider it is becuase its ICS upgradable
I also have a HP Touchpad with CM9 ICS... thats a great piece of equipment if your into modding as well!
mind telling where you got 32gb one for that price?? Im looking to get one myself by budgets tight so any savings is appreciated.
BTW one question about the tablet itself can someone give me an idea about the average battery life, Yes i know battery life is very subjective but i need some kind of referance as i read a review by engadget and it basically said the iconia had the worst battery life of all of the major 10 inch tablets.
220$ for a 32gb?! Who did you steal this from?? haha
I got mine from acer's official ebay store, 330$ (shipping+tax included), refurb 32gb. Works fine.

I've gotten 5 days on standby with battery drain to 42% (busy week, it just sat on the bedside table for that time no usage). I figure it could have gotten to 10 days.
When I was using it as an e-reader running the Kindle app almost exclusively I was getting on average 3 days of use between charges, reading for about 3-4 hours a day (Game of Thrones books are LONG and addictive).
Right now I've been playing games on it and I can easily go a whole day (overclocked at 1504mhz) before having to charge it.
Standby had wifi turned on, but off when the screen was off. Reading I always had it in airplane mode, and playing games can be a mix between airplane and wifi. Actually it hasn't seemed to make a huge difference that I can see.
I've had this transformer since it came out. Dont use it much, except when I need to finish up some work on the road which is the reason why I bought it...having the flexibility of keyboard...
Are you still excited about it? What purpose does it serve you? Whats your favorite feature?
I just bought an HDMI to mini HDMI cable so I could connect it at my in laws T.V and my children can watch Netflix or movies we have purchased on Amazon. Any other use for it?
Thank you for your suggestions.
The TF101 is a great device! I've had it almost as long as it's been out and I still love it. If you are having a hard time finding a use for it then you either didn't really need a tablet in the first place or are not looking at its full potential. I use mine for everything, it has totally replaced my laptop. Android has tons of productivity and office apps, apps for sharing documents and other work, loads of games, eBook reading apps, etc., etc.
Any device can be written off as not necessary, after all people can get along just fine with no electronic devices at all (I used to work and live in a wilderness training camp myself). The key to revitalizing the shine on any tablet is to start using it for everyday things and to try changing the look and feel. Try doing something on it that you would normally do on a laptop or PC, after the initial shift in feel you may find that you like the tablet more. You could also try a new ROM to change the look, feel, and performance. If all of this seems like too much work then maybe you should just sell it and move on...tablets are not the answer for everyone.

If you need others to remind you what you should use your tablet for, then maybe you don't really need one?
I'm not at all saying this to mock you, I purchased a TF101 myself and have the dock too. I use the tablet for Netflix, casual news reading and a little bit of playing games like Machinarium and Rayman Jungle Run. I intended to use it for Skype as well, but the mic volume was always too low so I gave up on that and went back to my laptop for Skype.
My three year old son uses the tablet a lot more than I do for watching videos and playing games in Zoodles Kid Mode.
The dock I use for one thing and one thing only: backup battery when traveling - what a waste of money! (for me)
I like having a tablet even though I'm far from a heavy user and I like my TF101. That said, I'm tempted to get a Nexus 7 and let the Transformer call it a day.
It's convenient, small, and can do everything... well almost. I mostly use it at work to connect to switches, serial ports, etc. That way I don't have to carry the macbook around. Then at home it becomes a remove for my TV device, a portable crappy-game station, a small OGT TV for streaming from the SAN, etc. There's so many uses!

I love my TF101. Best part is the "instant on" feature. When I need to quickly check something quickly on the Internet without waiting for my laptop or desktop to boot.
How about buying a Bluetooth OBD II adapter (less than $20 on Amazon) buy the app "Torque" and for $25.00 you have an excellent OBD2 diagnostic tool. I have one and it works great!
Rodger
I just use my transformer to output video to my TV. Other than that, not many uses. Used to use it a lot more when I was using my Nexus S.
Now that my phone is more superior (in specs) to my Transformer, I use it a lot less and less.
Would I get another tablet? Probably not because it doesn't fit my needs. For some people, it fits into theirs. For me, I use my desktop a lot so a tablet doesn't necessarily replace anything for me. I find some uses for it when I'm reading on the go though, although this semester it wasn't needed as much--others it was more handy.
Just kind of hard to find the balance between tablet and phone usages, in my opinion.
Was extremely excited to flash ROMs and all that on my TF101, but now that the community isn't as active (most has shifted to other devices) this has gone downhill.
bedtime surfing
I only really use mine for bedtime surfing, youtube and occasionally Music. I like playing with different ROMs and now I'm trying to get Plasma Active (Ubuntu.... proper Linux) on it.
I use mine for a multitude of things, from inventory control, web surfing, submitting customer orders, receiving inventory, word processing, spread sheets, games, and more often then not when I am out camping. I go camping A LOT in summer here in Alaska, so it is a lot easier to tote around the TF101 then it is to tote around my 17" Toshiba laptop.
My tf also serves as my GPS in the car when I'm on the road visiting customers. Tethered to my phone just for the web connectivity since I did not get the 3G version. Honestly the TF has changed the way that I use computers and my work. Yes the "instant on" feature is very nice. But the portability and feature rich ability is the sole reason I wanted one.
Let's see: internet, email, netflix, crackle, remote into home pc and most importantly as a head unit in my truck, lol! Since it is my head unit, I use it almost everyday.

Recently picked up a Nexus 10, and really feel like I need a bluetooth keyboard for sending longer emails and working with Google Docs when I'm not in the office. I'm getting away from using a laptop when I'm on the go, but I am missing the keyboard. I'd like to get a keyboard that would pair with more than one device (so I can use it with my kids nexus 7), is portable enough (doesn't have to be tiny), and good quality. Any suggestions?
(I realize this might not be the best location on the forums for this question, so please move it if need be.)

I have the Motorola keyboard and I really enjoy using it. It nearly matches the width of my n10 so it fits in the sleeve case with the tablet. It comes with a stand/cover and has a thinkpad like pointer stick. I purchased it last month for $38 but word has gotten out and it is now double in price.

Plenty of different choices, see which suits you better.
So my 8 year old daughter broke her chromebook last week. Her class uses Google classroom for homework and more recently home learning etc. To save some money I picked up a Fire HD 8 for her in the Black Friday Sale for just over £50 and have already used toolobox to make it more stock android like, and installed the playstore and then google classroom. TBH for such a cheap tablet I'm really impressed and it's actually faster than her chromebook was, that cost £200 last year. I also have an old bluetooth mouse and keyboard which I've paired with tablet with no issues.
I did originally think that having a USB C would mean that I could plug into the HDMI port on her TV, but having read the forums I can see this isn't supported which is really annoying. I was wondering if this is a hardware issue, or is it the firmware? If firmware, has anyone looked into enabling this? Alternatively, is there a way of mirroring the screen to her tv. It has a firestick plugged into it.
If I had known this before hand I would have opted for the 10 inch screen for her. Serves me right for impulse buying i guess, but if anyone can help at all, I would be really grateful.

If I had known this before hand I would have opted for the 10 inch screen for her. Serves me right for impulse buying i guess, but if anyone can help at all, I would be really grateful.
