Any chance anyone find a place to pick up the dev phone's back cover? I've been looking for a one and haven't been able to find one yet.

I would looooooooove one of those -- I'd gladly pay $50 for it
I Like the DEV Phones Glossy Keyboard, looks good on it. Although that does mean smudges out of this world lol. Have you looked into getting that design inscribed on the back of your cover?
Concerning back covers.
I have already ordered one from HTC to replace my grey one with a black one. Unfortunately they didnt have the white UK one. Why not order a replacement for 15 dollars and have it sent out and painted? I am sure it can't be more than 50 dollars when finished.

Finally? This was posted at least one week ago. They don't seem to answer my emails so I don't know what to think. I find the replacements very expensive as well specially the digitizer. Personally find it very hard to wreck the LCD without wrecking the digitizer, which in that case will be very expensive to replace, over 360$. And that's if you replace the parts yourself.
Oh well It's good someone has these replacements parts but the screen has been on Ebay for much less, still no sign of the digitizer.
Sorry my phone has been out of commission for a while and decided to check the other day for parts and ran up on them. Decided to post the links...Oh well. I bought my bro's broken g1 for 50 bucks and put his screen in mine. Not sure what is wrong with his goes straight to the recovery mode and some keys dont work.
No problem. Good you managed to open the internals of your device. I can't remove the housing from the back.
Is it hard to take the g1 apart and put it back together. I scratched the housing and was thinking bout getting a replacement and transferring everything. But im scared i might mess sumthing up.

Probably not difficult for someone who has opened a lot of phones. This is my first time.
That sounds like a ripoff to me. You can get a decent 22" LCD for that price.

G1 Replacement Window Lens Digitizer Price Lowered
It looks like they heard you. I just checked it out and the Window Lens Glass with Touch Screen Digitizer is now available by itself and it is much cheaper. Check it out http://www.cellulardr.com/G1Digitizer.htm
Hi everyone, after 18mths my HTC Touch (Elf) touchscreen has stopped working! I did a soft reset and hard reset, but now in the hard reset it asks me to touch the screen to setup Windows Mobile, however I cannot do it as the screen does not work!
There is no cracks or even scratches as I use the screen protector. I have been reading about LCD's & Digitilizers, but cannot work out which one I need..
Can someone please help me. I want to buy a kit off eBay to repair it but not sure exactly what I need.
Any help will be great!
Do you guys think US$200 is a good price for a HTC Touch Duel with no scratches, as new ? I can buy one for this price, but have never used a dual, and would love my original htc touch to be fixed...
About mine:
- 18mths Old
- No scratches or damage
- Slight corrosion on the plastic where sim card etc goes, not internally but just on the mirror type plastic there is slight green corrosion but it can clean off easily.
- never been in water or anything like that!
Touch screen does not respond to touches anymore, this happened over about 2wks.. it started to not work now and again, then it switched off automatically a couple of times over that period... now it is not responding at all for about 10 days now!
I took to vodaphone and it is out of warranty, I am insured, but it is a load of bullcrap to get insurance, and even if you do you still need to pay a premium of between $150-$275 (AU$) so i might aswell either juszt pay to get it fixed or do it myself.
Cancelling Insurance on this phone ASAP, never getting insurance ever again, only for the first 12mths if phone is over $1000
insurance is lame, and only benefits if phone is lost or stolen.
cheers any1 that can assist me!
You need a digitizer, about $20 from eBay, easy to replace, just see Service Manual for HTC Touch. Better still if you'll get the entire front faceplate with digitizer already attached, simply because it makes your life a lot easier, all you'll need to do it connect the digitizer and assemble the unit.
thankx so much enigma1nz, i was thinking only the digitalizer was needed, but what is the diff between the lcd & digitalizer? I mean in functions etc.
thanku so much for ur time.
I will be ordering the replacement peices, do you think I should do myself or take to a repairer. I am tech savvy, I build PC's, replace RAM etc.. so it should be easy, yea?
cheers

LCD is the screen itself, it shows the information, digitizer is responsible for the touch function. It is relatively easy to replace, simply because the design of the device allows for direct connection with no soldering involved. There is a service manual with photos floating around somewhere, I think even on this forum. Just search for it.
Thanks Enigma1NZ, I actually got a pdf of the dissasemble guide for the htc touch, so should be perfect, I just ordered a digitizer off eBay for only AU$13.60 inc. delivery, so that is awesome!
I got a call from my insurance company today, they want $175 excess if the phone is 'approved' for insurance, plus they kill the imei number too, i told her not to worry and I'm cancelling insurance (already paid $180 all up).... damn rip off, maybe okay while in warranty, but otherwise I will not be making that mistake again!
I will keep ya'll updated, and will be videoing me pulling apart & replacing so I will upload it 4 others too.
P.S enigma, love ur photos posted in myspace.. nice work
I love Touch for the simplicity and straightforwardness of its build, I was surprised the housing was so easy and reasonably cheap to replace (I am thinking of getting mine in red...or purple...). The worst digitizer replacement has to be for 1-gen Iphone and LG Prada. Blasted capacitive screens are the way of the future though and are pleasure to use.
Thanks, i got you added. Let us know how you went. Insurance companies are a bloody rip-off artists playing on our insecurities. I deal with them often when it comes to repairs. Makes no sense to insure after a warranty period simply due to technology depreciaton - you end up paying more in excess than the device is worth at the time.
Yeah the phone looks fairly simple in its housing, I have played around with it a bit... I was actually seriously thinking about replacing my housing while I was in there to white, since I saw the Magic I love the whiteness! I would love a silver housing though, that is the ultimate but have only found white so far.
I will keep you'all updated here with photos 'n video with what I do change.
I was going to buy a prada actually, I think the screen and whole look is amazing, It was tempting but I am very satisfied I chose my touch over the Motorola Razr, Prada and Touch... Touch wins
Cheers again enigma1nz.
I heard LG screens lose sensitivity over time.
Hi, a friend of mine talked to me yesterday about his touch. It seems he has the same problem of the digitizer stoping to work.
Where can I find the service manual and do you know of a good place to buy the digitier?
Tanks!

Hi... I need your help, I need to change my digitizer, so I want to know you ordered only digitizer or one already fixed on casing as Enigma told you ??
Pls let me know..Thanks
Get a Digitizer and fix em on.
I've cracked my screen
Went go-karting today and got thrown around so much in the kart that the screen cracked.
So, what's the best way about getting it repaired?
Can I just send it straight back to HTC UK and get the screen replaced under warranty? My phone is rooted, but not unlocked.
I have not returned a phone yet, but as many have stated, "it does not void your warranty to root, only to unlock the bootloader" so in theory you should just be able to send it in.
.....except that warranty won't cover a cracked screen.. I think the going rate was $280?
are you insured through assurion?
You broke it, you buy it.

I dropped my N1 on the floor in my house (stone floors) two weeks ago and cracked the glass screen.. picked up a new glass screen on ebay for $38 shipped and spent about two hours replacing it myself.. turned out perfect.. just be very patient and take your time during the replacement process.
This is the damage, I don't think the glass is broken so is it just the LCD screen beneath that I'll need to replace?

No, it's the digitizer/screen. The display would be a lot more expensive to replace.
Hi mate.. if the amoled still works you are fine yiu would just need a new digitalizer, about £20 from ebay and fix it youself.. if the amolded wkrks you need a new lcd, £45 from ebay.. i nroke my amoled, fixed it and now works.. good luck!!

If that's the case, then why when I power it on does nothing appear?
It vibrates when booting so I know its working?
when i dropped my nexus one, the amoled broke, not the outer screen/digitizer. i believe the cost for a new amoled was around $85 plus shipping and it would also cost your warranty. therefore, i sent it back in for repair and it cost $115 total, warranty still intact. btw, i opted for a refurb unit instead of waiting for them to return my damaged unit.
good luck, you have to decide if its worth voiding your warranty to fix it yourself.

Sorry I missed that part.. Yeah if it's not showing anything the display has problems, although I find it odd it would break but not the digitizer.

It is gonna be high! You wille get 3 options..1) fix the phone for a very high price 2) get the phone and pay around $40 for the labour and delivery 3) dispose of the phone for free by htc.. so pretty much re use the parts for another phone..
Not a sencible choice calling htc in my opinion

Having searched the internets I've found reports of people having it fixed by HTC UK for between £60 - £100
Also, I was told if I didn't want them to carry out the work there would be a £20 fee to return the phone to cover postage and the engineers time.
I think you're estimates are way off, however, I'm going to wait until I get my quote or I'll be eating my words...

I'm impressed t0ph0id, I accidently got a slight scratch on my week old N1, it's small but I know it's there and I'm really upset about it.
You have properly screwed the screen and you seem ok with it
Wish I could be as relaxed as that haha.
Hey buddy i had the same issue with my desire.. cracked in a similar way, HTC quoted me £238 for screen, housing, new logic board & labour.. even asked them just to replaced the screen cos i did see anything wrong with the housing but they said they couldn't do it cos motherboard had been bent..
so just got a replacement lcd from ebay at £45, took 45mins to fit the new screen everything working correctly
oh and the logic board wasn't bent! cheeky HTC

They'll repair, replace, give an alternative if they don't have the model or give a cash equivalent.

Does anyone know anywhere in london, UK to get a new screen fitted.
I dropped my htc desire hd yesterday and its cracked the screen, there is no ink on the screen and everything is working fine still, so its just the first piece of glass thats broke.
so what exactly do i need to get fixed, i see alot of people mentioning ameled or something like that, do i need to get that replaced as well, or can i just buy the glass myself and fix it myself?
i've checked a few htc repair centres online and they all want between £60 - £90 to fix it, but im sure i can do it myself with the right equipment.
as for right equipment, i been looking on ebay and noticed i could either buy just the glass or the full unit, would i better to buy the full unit to be safe?
The Desire HD is one of the last smartphones where the glass is not glued to the LCD panel, so you can remove the glass without issue. You will need a hairdryer or something, to loosen the glue that holds the glass to the frame.
As someone who has done it...
If it still works with the crack leave it alone. There is a nice HTC disassembly video out ther & you can get the bits from ebay. I initaly just bought the screen £20, but it's bonded to the digitiser £20 & so it's best to get the combined unit.
Pulling the phone to bits is OK, reassembling it should be OK, but there is nothing nothing to hold the base of the screen to the body without the special glue strips. I am used to repairing things, but all the connectors are soo small. I have gone back & check but can't see what isn't making contact.
I now have a working screen, but no WiFi, Bluetooth, or camera & a big hole in the bottom of the phone between the screen & the back. I wish I had just decided to live with the black patches on my display where something had leaked.
If you can get the job done for £60 inc parts do take it, or wait for your contract upgrade
I managed to find a company that will fix it for £45 all in, that includes sending it back to me special delivery, so i sent it off today, i'll report back in a few days will my review on them.
they said it'll take 2-4 days to receive the phone back.
I paid 150 euro's to replace the screen (which was the cheapest in my country), and my button backlights dont work anymore.
3 months later a crack came in there again, out of nowhere. It was not really annoying... but it hurt my fingers as i was moving around the crack; so i bought a screen protector to put on the screen and can hardly feel anything right now.

if you've got ink leaks then you'll need a new lcd as well, and £35 for both lcd and glass is really good.
but i dont fancy trying it myself, watched a few video's and it seems like a hard job.
i'd struggle just to keep track of where all the screws go
I have repaired mine with a preassembled screen and digitizer kit from eBay, sent from HK. I think it was around $60 shipped. Unfortunately the cap buttons do not light up properly and the screen ha some light leaks around the edges. I was given a $10 refund, so I'm not complaining. It may be with the Xtra to get a preassembled unit though...if it works right.

I'll give you my review but it'll be a quick basic 1 as I stopped using the phone within a week after getting it. It's now just sitting on my bedroom side but here goes.....
The company itself were amazing, replied to all my questions via phone call or E-mail.
They text me with every step that was taken on the phone so I always knew where my phone was.only downside was that once I received it back, it wasn't as good as expected. Yes the new glass was solid and everything worked but there was a small gap at the top and it really bugged me. To the point I stopped using the phone.
I mean it's bearable if your not worried about the gap, it's not came away from the screen/phone at all.
Ps- if you want to ask any questions about the service, free free but like I said, only downside was the gap at the top. But I was warned I will get that with every company that fixes it.
I dropped mine last month
and now there are several inky spots which disturbs me
I called the HTC Care, they said it will be $150 for making an LCD replacement

Well, my screen broke after 5 days, and the digitizer is completely unresponsive. It was barely a 2 foot drop! Here are a few pictures: one, two, three.
Anyways, with the sad story aside, I have looked into my repair options, and I have decided the most economical thing to do would be to order a replacement front assembly and do it myself. In another thread, I found this link. The drop resulted in a few scratches on the metallic frame, so I want to make sure that's also included in my replacement. Now, that link looks very promising, but I'm trying to save as much money as possible. I have browsed though Ebay, and found similar items that cost about $30-40 cheaper (after shipping) coming from China, but I'm a little skeptical about it. $100+ is expensive for a repair, so I want to make sure I'm getting quality parts. A couple examples are here and here. Are these parts directly from LG, and if so, how do they become available for sale through third parties? It's the quality of the parts that concern me the most. All said and done, I want the phone to look and feel as if it were brand new out of the box.
On another note, I'll be buying this as soon as it's available. I had one of those on my Nexus One back in the day, so I know my N4 will be well protected, even though it's going to effectively turn it into a cinder block. Such a shame that I gotta cover up such a beautiful device, but apparently it's too risky to leave the phone naked...
So basically, I just want some opinions about the cheaper Ebay options, or if anyone has a better recommendation. I've ruled out sending the phone to LG's third-party repair center due to the costs. I'm comfortable doing the repair myself, so I'm happy saving a few bucks in the process.
Why not send it it for a new device instead?

The Chinese make a dead on imitation of the N4. The only way to be sure you have a real N4 is to call Google and ask if your IMEI is legit. I'm guessing what you're looking at are screens for the copies. If you're worried, what's another few dollars for the real thing? I can see if they were half the price, but they aren't.
Also, why not get a bumper or a Ringke case? They still show of the phone.

I bought it from my carrier, and declined a $7/month replacement plan... I could get in touch with them, but I'm pretty sure they're just going to tell me it's my own fault and nothing they can do about it.

The Chinese make a dead on imitation of the N4. The only way to be sure you have a real N4 is to call Google and ask if your IMEI is legit.

Mine is real. I didn't buy a Chinese fake. I was just wondering if the replacement front from those Ebay listings were real or not. I know it's hard to tell, but I want to make sure I'm getting original LG parts.

I'm guessing what you're looking at are screens for the copies. If you're worried, what's another few dollars for the real thing? I can see if they were half the price, but they aren't.
Also, why not get a bumper or a Ringke case? They still show of the phone.

I was originally considering the official bumper, but I'm not sure if it will really be enough. I don't want to go through the same thing again.
I don't like the design of the Ringke case, either. I know Seidio's cases are great quality, but at the same time, they make the phone huge.

You misunderstood. I wasn't questioning whether or not your phone was real. I was telling you that the fakes are really good. Those are probably REALLY good fake screens. Understand?
Hi guys,
I have the same problem on my Nexus 4 which is now completely useless. Funny enough, the phone is still on but the touch screen doesn't work anymore... Let me tell you how annoying it is when the alarm rings at 7am on a Saturday morning and you can't turn it off...
Anyway, I hope I'm in the right topic and not posting something that has been answered already (I did a research...) but can you let me know if you managed to change your screen Bloodflame? If so, was it easy with the replacement kit that usually comes with the screen you buy. I don't want to go to a dodgy shop that will take me £20 for just a simple screen change... I'm sure I can do it myself.
I recently found one on eBay for £85, which is pretty much the best deal I saw so far (I can't send you a link as I'm a new member, sorry).
Thanks in advance for your help and apologies if the English isn't perfect (I'm not a native).

OK, I see what you mean. Just when you mentioned verifying my IMEI with Google made it sound like you thought mine was a fake. I understand the Chinese knockoff's could be hard to tell apart, and I understand that those replacement parts on Ebay may be fake. That's what I was skeptical about. They might be real, but maybe it's not worth the risk...
At first glance, the price appears similar, but the one from EtradeSupply comes to about $152 after shipping, whereas the Ebay ones are about $115 shipping included. I was just hoping I could save a little cash - that's all.

I only made this post last night, so no, I haven't fixed my phone yet. I haven't even placed the order for my replacement parts yet. But I can update this thread later on with my progress. Heck, I can even post pictures of the repair process and make note of any details pertaining to how easy/hard it is, a specific step that might be a little more difficult (ribbon cables come to mind), or anything like that.
FYI, you can disable your alarm from ADB as long as you have USB debugging enabled. It's a bit of a pain, but I was able to get a few things done using ADB. For instance, I was able to turn off mobile data, enable wifi, and make a full backup of my internal storage among a few other minor things, just in case.
Code:
adb shell
svc data disable
svc wifi enable
input touchscreen tap [x] [y]
input keyevent [#]
Google those commands for more details.

OK I see. No problem then, I ordered the screen yesterday and will also give updates when I'll change it. Hopefully, I'll receive it and change it before you and will therefore give you a few tips (if needed). I'm sure it's not that difficult but we'll probably need to be very cautious. There's probably a few videos showing how to do it. If I find a good one, I'll post the link here.

I didn't know this tip, thanks for the help! It finally went out of battery, so nothing to worry about anymore )
Just a general heads up:
I recently had the exact same problem, wanted to keep my nexus naked but it cracked after about a month. So I ordered a replacement last sunday of eBay for about $135 with shipping, it was not from China, from California. I received the screen yesterday, and successfully replaced it by my own, it was pretty simple and took me about an hour. I have never before disassembled a phone. The screen works fine and seems just as good as the one before. I could have sent it in to LG but they said they would remove all data from the phone for some security reason and I didn't want to do that. But if you have any more questions just ask me, I will be glad to help you.

Sounds great! Yeah, I've already briefly looked up a couple videos and guides (see this one on ifixit) and it doesn't looks terribly difficult. Also, I recall reading about someone who successfully replaced their screen, but ended up cracking the back glass in the process. Might be worthwhile to take a little extra care to make sure that doesn't happen to you. You've been warned

Yeah, I could understand why you'd want to leave the N4 naked - it's certainly a beautiful device! But on the other hand, stuff like this happens and it becomes an expensive mistake, as we've learned.
So just tell me, was there any one or two specific disassembly/assembly steps that were more difficult? If so, did you figure out any tricks to overcome the difficulty a bit? I understand working with small parts and flimsy ribbon cables can be a bit of a pain. I've taken a couple phones apart before, but never had too much difficulty as long as I was being careful and patient. I suppose the same is true here but I don't intend to take my N4 apart until I have my new screen and I'm ready to get to work. Payday is a week away, so it's just a waiting game for me at this point.
The most hard part I've encountered was taking the back cover away, that by it self took me about 15 minutes, if you looked at any videos you will know what I mean. Also when you take out the battery make sure to use a hairdryer to loosen up the strong glue below it, also be very careful taking it out, I found out it bends a little its basically made out of strong tinfoil, but if you do bend it a little don't worry it will still work

$120 ain't too bad, hell the deductible for at&ts insurance is $125. I'll have to keep that in mind should the unthinkable happen.
Google could make everyone's life easier and just offer 2 year replacement plans for a flat cost. No you should never drop it, but we're all human, it's bound to happen at some point. Thing is I want a flat replacement plan like what you would get from a retail store on consumer electronics, not scam insurance. Whats irritating is if you buy a tablet, you can get a replacement plan from square trade, but since the nexus 4 has a radio, it's $10 a month, $99 deductible. Ridiculous!

I had the same problem, first i tried to send the phone to a tech guy to try to remove the digitizer but he couldnt make it, then i bought a screen assembly and installed it myself. I live in Argentina so finding the replacement was not easy. The problem came afterwards when the screen touch was a bit floppy, i tried a Pointer Location app and i discovered that now the screen can read up to 2 fingers and it works really bad (it used to read up to 5 fingers). Is it possible that it is one of the chinese imitations? I didnt know there were copied parts for the N4 up to now
The only visual difference i spotted is that the original screen had little integrated circuits in the screen forming tiny nearly-invisible squares inside the front glass, and the replacement one has no such things.
