Help me set up a Fire for a little kid - Kindle Fire General

Okay all, my son is always playing games on my or his mothers phones and tablets so I figured, why not get him his own tab he can play around with.
It's currently running CM9 build 6-23-2012 w/ Hash's 3.0.21+ kernel (best I can tell)...just got this.
I put a Gumdrop case on it also for some serious drop protection.
Thinking I can drop down to one or two screens and enlarge the app icons ala "Windows 8 type screen"
I'll probably go with some custom icons also. But I guess my questions would be, what learning games/apps do you parents recommend? Also will run Netflix so he can get his daily fix of Thomas the Train, Spongebob, Alvin, etc.
Also are there any good reading apps/books out there on the market for kids on Android.
Being an Android fanboi I have to start him young. He knows Apple is "yucky" lol.
I must say I should have picked up a Fire long ago. Accessories and development are endless and this is really a great tablet for the price.
ETA: I have Zoodles Kid App installed and looks like it works pretty well. Always open for more suggestions though.

Games:
Minecraft Pocket Edition (Endless hours of fun)
Cut the Rope
Fruit Ninja
Color & Draw for kids HD
Kids Learn to Read
My cousin uses these for his kid, It loves them. (5 years old)

It? Lol.
Yeah those are some pretty good apps for kids.
Where's My Water is also a good app.

That one night...long long ago I was forever ruined whenever I see the word "it" stand out (we watched the movie It at a bday party when I was approximately 8 years old). My son's mother hates clowns. One of these days I will strap her to the couch and make her watch that movie...
ETA: Thanks for the recommendations. Just gonna have to see how he does with everything I've downloaded. He loves the "Shoot Bubble" games.
But for the life of me....I'm going back and forth whether I want to flash a JB rom on this or not. I can deal with bugs....been doing this stuff a while, but being it's for my son.....don't know if his mother will approve using his Fire to add to my crack flashing fiends.

The bugs are minimal...and its FAST...have not had a noticible issue with jb
KFire California

I told you to wait a bit lol. Just leave the ICS ROM I left of it. It's pretty stable. Give JB a month or so to be even better =D

FYI for the others viewing. This is the man I bought this beloved Fire off of today. I tell ya man it's rock solid and very stable as is. However....I got a feva!!! And the only prescription...is more jelly bean.
D/L'd Jandycane, Eyecandy, twa_priv's SGT7 JB rom, and Hash's JB rom...... I'm in trouble lol

Check my sig....

I use a horribly outdated JB ROM without any bugs that I've noticed, I can't imagine you'd have any issues with one. Flash away guilt-free. :good:

Your such a good parent

That boy has rich dad. For a little kid to have his own tablet is dangerous.

Curious if anyone knows of any baby friendly cases available. The Gumdrop looks pretty good.
Picked up a Nexus 7 for my 7 month old. It's almost an identical form factor to the Fire (which we also have) and most cases fit, from what I've read.
Any suggestions? Needs to be pretty bullet proof.

Not rich by any means (well by Chicago standards anyways) but just work hard for my money and careful what I spend it on. He doesn't get a lot of toys and he is very disciplined but every now and then dad has got to spoil him. :good:

The gumdrop for the fire does not fit the N7...as I tried that yesterday.

Bummer, but thanks for the info

XOOM as a fathers day present!

Hey all, I've been an XDA regular for quite a while now, starting with the windows mobile devices, then my Nexus One, and now I'll be a regular in here since my wife got me a XOOM for fathers day.
I'd actually been hoping for a new Galaxy Tab 10.1, and even went to Best Buy on launch day (on Friday) but had to walk away empty handed due to their pathetic launch.
I've always been concerned about the lack of a micro SD slot on the GT since a main use of my tablet will be for entertaining my kids on car rides and the movies are usually over a GB each. Having 32GB internal on the XOOM plus 32 potentially on a card is a huge advantage.
The biggest downside right now that I've found with the XOOM is the weight. It's not exactly a feather weight, and heavy usage can lead to some tired hands and arms (especially laying in bed at night holding it above you). I'm not sure the lighter weight of the tab will really make that much of a difference though.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to playing with the XOOM and since she bought it at Costco for $499 I have 3 months to play with it in case I want to take it back.
Welcome. I was never going to abandon my xoom, but one reading all the trial and error's, I rooted and modded my tablet. Now we have full sd access, usbOTG, custom roms, and much more. You will be more than happy with your xoom. Have fun
Sorry, double post
I agree with Chris, you'll love the Xoom.. I am also a WinMo vet and you sound like you know your way around a device so you will have no trouble. Android rewards the curious who like to tinker.
Just read through a few guides on using adb and rooting, then flash Tiamat's new ROM. SD card plus overclocking and smooth as glass performance. Even better, this is just the first step in all the things this device can do.
As for kids the Xoom is ideal, the video quality is great using Moboplayer free from the market and Robotek is my son's favorite game. That and a bunch of downloaded Godzilla movies on the Xoom will get us through a 14 hour plane flight next week. He is even learning about modern computers and how android works by messing about with basic app design and sideloading his masterpieces on the Xoom (after a nandroid backup of course, I am not THAT stupid)...try doing that with an iPad.

WOW you must be a hell of a father. My one daughter never even wished me a Happy Fathers Day. The other one claimed she was sick when it was time to go see my father. I went to the family fathers day picnic by myself, and neither of them got me anything. Maybe its just me.

First of all grats in the XOOM. Second, all I can suggest to you is please, spontaneous use it by holding it above you when in bed. I have learned from experience that when you fall asleep while doing so, your face wont be happy with the result.
XOOM is a good choice and its not heavy at all for a Guy, maybe to ur wife and kids. Its an even better deal if you are in US because if timely updates.

Too true. My other half says it's "heavy" but it's not IMO. If the XOOM might be too heavy for dainty arms. If so, there's a Tablet for that...but it's lacking in slots / ports. Won't use 'em? Prefer looks / weight over functionality? Then the Samsung Galaxy Tab was likely made for you.

Well I'm out

Hey guys. So after a couple months with the kindle fire I've decided to sell it. Its a great little device but it isn't really working out for me so I went ahead and got a galaxy tab 10.1. I'm still going to be in here every now and then looking around because I'm developing some things for the kf (using my brothers as a tester). Anyways see you all around

I had a GT10.1 for about a month after xmas, but I just couldn't stand the thought of my fiance spending that much moolah on me, so I returned it. I've had the KF for about a week now, rooted for about 5 days, and now on CM7 barebones for not even a full day. I gotta admin, the GT is obviously superior in functionality, but I think having the KF be ALMOST as good as a real tab for a fraction of the cost helps offset the lack in functionality. So I'm happy with my KF for now. Now if money ever becomes a non-issue in the future.....

I agree, for what you get with the KF, and the nice price point, you can beat a rooted fire running a modded ROM. CM9 is working out really nice for me, and gives me all the function of my bro-in-laws Samsung tab.

I do agree though. Feels a lot more natural and not as clunky. Of course I have to admit, the tab-style keyboard on my 10.1 was nice and made landscape typing MUCH easier on it. But with the 7 you don't have to mess with it, landscape isn't too big or awkward for most things.

I'm a little ashamed to admit I laughed at that...
For the cost, the Fire is really nice. I am definitely getting my money's worth. My only comment on 7" vs 10" is: 10" would be nicer for reading textbooks or academic papers. It isn't bad reading those kinds of things in landscape (just a lot of scrolling), but it would be better on a 10" screen I bet. Granted, not SO much better that I would fork over $400+...
What else would you want to do that the KF can't do ? Just curious..

Don't get me wrong guys the kf is a great device. I'm a paramedic and also teach medic at a local school. For me the 10 inch screen and the ability to use a bluetooth keyboard were big selling points. Also carrying the galaxy is a non issue for me because I'm used to carrying a laptop around. Now I don't have to do that anymore. If this post is confusing I'm sorry I'm now on hour 24 with no sleep :banghead:

Fire is good, and just getting better...
I am a flashoholic with my Android devices, but I just didn't have the courage to flash the alpha builds of ICS for the Fire until recently. Initially I was very disappointed with the fire and its functionality, but after flashing it with ICS, it is AMAZING and I love it. The only thing I would want is a camera and mic, but those aren't necessary.

And therein lies the rub, my friends. That's the exact reason I traded my GT10 back in for a KF. Sure, it's superior to the KF in quite a few ways, but an extra $400 worth? Not in my mind. Then again, if you got the money, then it's an easy call.
I like money, I'm a big fan of money. I keep it in a jar above the fridge. I'd like to put more money in that jar. That's where you come in.

Nexus 7 - Suitbable for a young 'un?

We were going to get my 6 year old an Nintendo DS for his Xmas, due to the games on it for his, plus the fact that they do educational games!!
But, I've now started getting to thinking about getting him a Nexus 7...
I'm after a Nexus 10 once it's released, so was wondering if people here feel that the Nexus 7 is a good choice for a young person!!
He love the games that I have on my HTC One X+, and i'm sure there are plenty educational games on the Android market...
I did see that there are some 'kid' tablets, but have read that for the money they are pretty rubbish!
Would also mean we could play with it once he goes to bed!!!
Any thoughts?
Maybe with a bobjgear or gumdrop case.but even then I'm not sure it would hold up. The nexus 7 seems quite easly cracked screen
I say go for it. Get a bobjgear case and tell him if he breaks it he won't be getting another one. Teach responsibility at a young age.
So far, he's been good with our Android phones, so fingers crossed he's leared his lessons!!!
:good:
Everyone has their own idea of parenting, but to me a Nexus 7 is too expensive for a toy. It will break in the hands of an average six year old.
There are a lot of great games for a six year old. A lot are even educational.
I would suggest the parent maintain ownership, and let the kid use it as a (minor) reward. The parent will love it...
But then I freak out at high school freshmen taking IPads to class...
When I was six my friends and I played with sticks in the woods and our parents couldn't get us to come home for dinner..... what the hell happened to kids?
No. Just.... no.

I don't think it would be bad, but there's no parental controls. So there is that chance of something naughty being seen. I picked up my kids a Nabi 2 tablet, it runs ICS, but has a very child friendly and child proof skin that's password protected to get to the main android ui. It also comes with a case. Just a thought.

My 3 year old loves the nexus. However, I (and him) find that the iPad has better apps for kids. The quality of the apps I've found on the apple side seem much better. This is just my experience.
That said, there are some good apps on the android side as well. Since you are talking about a 6 year old, I don't really know what apps they would like.

Good tablet for parents?

So my parents currently own 2 android phones htc desire s and wildfire s.
They talk a bit about ipads and how it would be usefull, but I have feeling thats only cause they havent heard of android tablets yet.
They play smaller games like wordfeud, angry birds and well simple games. They do read alot of news and some youtube and like simple apps and reason Im not asking them is cause I would love to surprise them with a tablet as a christmas present.
And then ofc I have something to play with when im home
So yeah my question is do you think this would be a good tablet for them to share or is there something better for their kinda use?

If they are still reasonably new to the whole idea of smart phones and tablets, Then the nexus 7 is by far the obvious choice. Simply for the reason that it is running on the same/similar os to the phones that they have and so getting to grips with it will be a much easier experience for them.
It is also far cheaper than ipad, if you find that they really like it you could get them a second one for a present next time around for the total cost of 1 iPad.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Well yes, the size and specs alone make it very ideal, not to mention to the price. Also the ability to add multiple users could also be very useful for them.

Im pretty sure by "iPads" they mean all tablets, it's just that ipad is the most recognizable.
I wouldnt bother them with yet another OS (iOS), if they're kinda used to android, its better. Then again, HTCs android 4.0 looks COMPLETELY different than Googles android 4.2.1. It might me an issue, but still, it looks more similar then to iOS.
Nexus 7 is cool because you can fit it in one hand, which might be helpful (you know how elderly people always look up thing (like newspaper) up close and lift their glasses a little ).
While android <2.3 was very geeky and didn't look all that pretty compared to iOS at the time, things have changed, android has become very user friendly, even for newbies.
I have an 88 year old grampa here with an original Motorola Droid... I got him this tablet and he loves it to death... everything is familiar with it being android and the size is perfect
"If I could make phone calls on this damn thing I'd throw that other piece of $#:% away"
He thinks phones should be this size so they're easier to see...
Should be good.. Or I hope so, got my mom a 32gb for Christmas.
She's got a galaxy s2 for her phone. And also has a viewsonic g-tab from the woot-off. That one was a mistake for sure from a normal end-user perspective and it kind of gave her a bad taste of android.
She also has the original Nook Color. Which at this point is just pretty well aged. And she never let me touch that one, so its still running the crap Barnes and noble software.
She's always said she wants an ipad. But it will be a cold day in hell before I buy an apple product so that ain't happening. Especially for double the cost.
And actually, I've also got the g-tablet, and a transfomer prime, and those mainly collect dust since I've gotten the nexus 7. It's the perfect size, I carry it with me everywhere. An additional reason I think, even if she had an iPad as well, the nexus would still get more use.
The phablet interface will make it pretty easy to go from their phones to that, without to much confusion. DO IT.

If this was reply to my comment, I wasn't implying that at all, I'm just following my personal experience with my grandparents, one grandma can handle a PC for basic operations (skype, gmail, internet, office), while my other grandparents get confused by the new way then need to watch TV with the box that the cable company provided them, and they consider a good phone one that has massive keys.
I did show them the N7 the other day, and they were fascinated, they just don't really want it or don't find any use for it.
Of course, everyone's different

Bought a Nexus 7 32GB version yesterday and gifted it to my self. Overall I really do like the specs on the device and how the device handles. I was using a Kindle Fire which was running JB 4.1.2.
While the Kindle Fire was running JB smooth without any problems that I seen. I just felt like something was missing as in some features which was lacking. I since then flashed the Kindle Fire back to default and sold the device.
I can say for 100% I'm a lot more happy owning the Nexus 7 then the Kindle Fire I had. Sometimes when using voice search in order to search for something. It really makes me want to laugh at times cause I said one thing. It thinks I said 'p0rn' which was not even close to what I said.
But I won't hold that the device's fault since I do have a minor speech impediment. But them the Nexus 7 they will love the device I'm sure of it.

My XOOM - still going strong!!

Hey all. So I love my Xoom but have had to purchase another unnamed tablet with 3G capabilities so for the last few months my 2 sons (3 & 5 years old) have been using the table for games and interactive books at bedtime. Of course they love it too now, but didn't realise how easy it is to use these things. The play the games and read the books without my help "daddy go away!!". They also love clouds and sheep and send me pictures they take of the game!!

I know ppl ***** and moan about the lack of updates for devices but for a device I really enjoyed but couldn't get over how bad Honeycomb was, well it's come a long way and is standing the test of time. I don't think I'll ever get rid of this device.

You should try JB from dream chech this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1997434
I rooted mine and have the latest JB on it. I can't believe I waited so long to root it!!! My Xoom is still going strong, but I noticed the battery doesn't last as long. I still get days of use out of it.
my xoom is not really doing well, ... but i will keep it untill it is really bricked XD update update and update to the latest roms!
I was a Verizon Xoom owner, then sold mine to finance the purchase of a Nexus 10. However, I am now a Verizon Xoom owner yet again. A while back, a client had bought my company a Xoom to test our web development work on because their field agents all used Xooms out in the field. Well, they upgraded to Galaxy Note 10.1s, which means they bought my company one for testing. With no use for the Xoom, my boss was nice enough to give it to me.
I have to say that, even though Google and Verizon have yet to get a Jelly Bean update out for the CDMA/LTE model, ICS runs fine on it for now. Plus, did I mention how much I missed having a tablet with a cellular connection? I have a Nexus 7 and 10, and though I love them to pieces, the only way to use them while I'm out is to kill my phone battery by enabling WiFi hotspot. The Xoom costs me $10/mo to have on my shared data pool on Verizon. I can deal with that. It's worth it to have the connectivity anywhere and everywhere. It's also nice that the Xoom is a little older now because the official accessories are dirt cheap now. I was able to pick up the OEM Motorola OTG cable (dubbed the Xoom Camera Connection Kit), standard dock, and portfolio case on eBay, all brand new, for a combined $30 bucks after shipping. That's a win.
I agree with the comment above that owning a Xoom is like owning a classic car. It's still plenty fast for everything I would do while out and about, plus the thing is built like a brick $h1thouse. If anyone ever breaks into your house, you can beat them over the head with your Xoom to knock them out, then use it to post about the incident on Twitter while you wait for the cops.
I'm glad to have the Xoom back in my arsenal, if only for the times when I'm out and about and want a cell connection without having to kill my phone battery. I only buy Nexus devices because I like the stock, unfettered Android experience and getting updates from Google. As we all know, the Xoom is functionally a Nexus in everything but its name. So...if you want a Nexus tablet with a cell connection on Verizon, the Xoom is still your only choice.
P.S. Vegas currently has the over/under on the 4.1.2/JZO54K Jelly Bean update for the Verizon Xoom at June 1 (to commemorate the one-year anniversary of its last update, the one to ICS). I'm taking the under, but only by a week or so.

Been using my Xoom every day for over a year and it's totally awesome. I've had zero problems since i bought it. I'm still using it with CM10 because CM10.1 just seems a little slower and I dont use multiple users. I'm totally happy that when I wanted to buy the Galaxy tab, it was sold out and I got the Xoom instead.
The only reason why i would consider an upgrade would be because i like higher dpi screens. In every other way the Xoom is superb.
My xoom (wi-fi only) still rocks on and is wonderful as well. It gets used every day and regularly lasts over half the week on a single charge, watching netflix for an hour or two most nights. I'm probably the freak of the bunch, running complete stock and being utterly satisfied with it. I mostly keep up with the forums here because of looking for things on my other android device (Epic 4g, i717 Note, Moment) histories and figured I might as well bookmark the Xoom too.
In any case, yay Xoom! I love my choice of tablet :]

No shame in stock, man. Check my signature. All five of my devices are bone stock. haha That Android 4.1.2/JZO54K ROM runs like a champ on the Xoom. Compared to ICS, Jelly Bean made the Xoom feel like a brand new tablet. All of us on Verizon are still waiting, but it'll show up eventually.
I feel like owning new device each time I try new ROM and its amazing xoom still gets really nice support, I've been using it for two years and its brilliant.
Best of luck to happy xoom users!

I can't stand the lag anymore. Ughh.
Sent from my Galaxy Note 2 on Verizon using Tapatalk 4 beta.
Lag? My boys play nothing but angry birds and other games / 3D books on it. It still goes great.

best ROM
could someone show me which ROM is the best at battery and gaming? I'm a bit confuse of it's GPU on EOS and CM10.1 Or does this belong to the hardware?
EOS Rom
I am very happy with the EOS rom:good:
Mine is still going strong, with a lag here, a lag there...
I'll solve it by flashing a Custom ROM on it since it's running official ICS...

I've also had my Xoom for a number of years, I GEDified it when 4.1.2 was first available and left in untouched until very recently. It's now rooted running dreamcwli's 4.2.2 rom which has given the device a new lease of life.
