is there a list of known apps that cause the sleep of death?
i'm using the 7/30/12 mirage kang. the fresh install doesn't have SOD problems but after i restore my apps, if i let the screen go dark for ten minutes while wifi is running, i'm pretty much guaranteed SOD.

That *is* the SOD. It's not caused by an app so much as meeting those conditions. For a quick fix set wifi to turn off when the screen turns off. Search is your friend for more info/fixes.

Like MISRy said, it is not a specific app causing it. It is the fact that you leave wifi on with the screen off. And not just specifically screen off, but in deep sleep. But it is not consistent and not everyone gets it. Some of the devs could never make it happen. Usually it is when wifi is on with screen off and an app is using it that is the problem. So if wifi is on and being used, and at the moment you try to turn it on it is in deep sleep, bingo SOD. As I said in the other thread, look at my tips.

No, the kernel and wifi kernel module are two different things. The wifi kernel module has to be matched to the kernel (it is a kernel module), but is a separate piece of software. It is in /system/lib/modules/twlan_drv.ko. No SOD patches have been used in any stock CM7 kernels or modules. I think Mrg666 uses a patched kernel for his Mirage build and sometimes it is enough, but SOD does not really stop until the patched module is used.

Yes there is a setting. Go to wifi networks and select menu and advanced. There should be a wifi sleep policy setting.
I think there is no specific app which causes SOD
Dear all my friends who facing the SOD Sleep of Death issue with their Android devices...
i found that it is totally related to Wifi Sleep policy related... i just changed the setting last night n now after 8 hours it is running absolutely without SOD... i will also be inform u later if i will get my device out of SOD issue... all of u just have to do one thing.
Go to settings>wifi settings>
from the options go to advanced settings
there is one option: Keep wi-fi on during sleep (go to this option)
there is 3 options: 1. Always, 2. Only when plugged in, 3. Never (increases data usage)
u just have to change ur option from 1 to 2 or 3, then i hope u will find that u will get ur device out of SOD issue...

Despite setting the WiFi sleep policy to "never", HD2 becomes unpingable when the screen goes off, causing applications such as Fring/Skype/etc to lose connection. After turning the screen back on, the WiFi reconnects, and does it rather quickly, but having it off while the screen off meaning no incoming Fring/Skype calls possible on WiFi.
Any ideas ?
NOTE: i am currently using this build.
Same problem. Wi-Fi goes to sleep when screen goes off, even if Wi-Fi tethering is running. It's a reason of losing connection via Wi-Fi tethering. BUT! If at least one network service is active (ping, for example), Wi-Fi doesn't goes to sleep. I think that some of background services (Wi-Fi routing!) stops or becomes idle when screen goes off. It's a priority or policy bug, maybe... Not in a particular ROM, but in Android OS.
Using MDJ's CyanogenMod 7 NAND ROM (Android 2.3.2 Gingerbread).

It is not power saving options because it also happens to my mdj 2.6 build with battery full. Power saving starts on 15% on my battery and also wifi and background data has been unchecked.
When this happens, no email updates, voip, and other app updates that needs data(because mobile data is intermittent in my area).
yeah, actually happens with all builds
I solved with this app, enabling all workarounds
http://www.appbrain.com/app/wi-fi-keep-alive/com.shantz.wifikeepalive
Enabling all workarounds would keep the device fully awake, this is not really a solution.
Tbh, this issue smells like a power management related bug in a wifi module/driver.
Also, if you google a bit, you can see it being talked about on nexus one, mentioning cyamogen roms as ones not having this issue.
Any idea what module/driver is responsible for wifi ? Is it a part of the kernel ? Or is it a module we may try replacing ?

Thanks much, just installed.
The offending driver seems come in a separate module, "bcm4329.ko". Here is a Nexus One thread mentioning the issue on one of the Nexus One stock builds, and actually presenting an updated module for that stock build.
Since HD2 uses the very same BCM4329 chip, it should be possible to compile the updated module for an HD2 kernel.
Any kernel guys up to the task ?

We need the commit used to do the change. I looked at the thread and found a commit but I dont think that is the right one.. Anyway I will try to see if can be included in my kernel asap and check if the situation improves.

I checked, and the fix is already there... So at this point I think this is not our problem. I will try to address this to markinus or danijel that are far more experienced than me in kernel stuff

Maybe, just maybe, it's already fixed in your latest kernel, that uses the latest code base ? Note that i did NOT try & check it with every kernel available, i've only checked this with one that came with the build i am using (i think it was MDJ there, newer version uses yours, but i am not yet running it).
Anyone using latest rafpinga kernel, can you please test and respond ?
Update, rafpigna 1.7 installed, identical WiFi behaviour.
Looks like this is the solution for Desire:

Hopefully someone could adopt this to HD2.

It's not our problem
Note: This isn't related to the sleep mode wifi disconnections caused by MAC addresses that don't begin 00, so far as i'm aware that's been patched for a while now. Wifi remains connected fine in standby mode, but the throughput is only suitable for very light traffic.

I know its not our problem, but this may still be our solution. Our problem, seemingly, starts when the driver it going down into the deepest power saving state it can. It is supposed to sustain connectivity in it, though, but it seemingly doesn't. Avoiding this deepest state (PM_MAX) may solve the problem while having little to no side effects. Well, obviously, i do understand it's going to consume more power with WiFi on, but its better than being unable to keep it on at all.
Again, i know this is not exactly our problem, but again, this CAN be our solution anyway.

Hello!
Unfortunately, I have tried this (to my detriment; I have code due tomorrow still!), and basically replaced the equivalent of this in the RAF 1.7 code (dhd_cdc.c and wl_iw.c have the PM_MAX vs PM_FAST thing).
My zImage came out almost a whole MB smaller (probably a toolchain thing), but the wifi problem while sleeping still exists, at least the symptoms that are linked in http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/detail?id=2403 with the similar fix of PM_MAX vs PM_FAST. That is to say, if I open the terminal and ping google.com, when the screen is off I get 300ms pings and when the screen is on I can get 3ms pings.
This happens whether I change PM_MAX or PM_FAST.
So this isn't the fix for what it's supposed to fix (or maybe I'm doing it wrong, toolchain's wrong, something), but I'll give it a few days to figure out whether my wifi drops more or less. Hopefully less.
(My symptoms are that, on campus, I have no problems with wifi, but sometimes if I leave the wifi zone and then come back, it'll report still having an IP lease and everything, but all pings and connectivity-type things such as web browsing will time-out. Not sure if this is what is being discussed here, but I thought it might help!)
Thanks,
Jeff
PS If you want the zip just to give it a spin, pm me or I might attach it here. That said, it might break everything! No obvious problems on my phone yet, though, so...
EDIT!: Of course, I invite anyone (especially rafpigna; perhaps you've tested this already?) to double check my work. It's possible I might've misplaced something!
I didn't do anything advanced; just pick up the CodeSourcery toolchain (free) for ARM (not GNU/Linux) and then install it on a Linux machine (it's possible with Windows, probably, but it'll be harder with the RAF build.sh). Then, make sure you have make and gcc packages on your Linux machine and then put your sources in the right directory and then try running the build.sh! rafpigna documents his work very well. Thanks rafpigna!

If you have disabled GPS and Bluetooth read the following, if not do so and come back^^
1. Go into battery stats and look out for anomalies
2. let your phone run out of power and shut down by itself, if the drain does not change significantly after that.
3. think about your installed apps. chat apps like skype and facebook are evil battery eating bastards.
4. check out whether your modem fits your region
5. Reflash the kernel

Easy Fix... (For the SGS anyway)
Go to... Menu>Wireless and network>Wi-Fi settings.
Uncheck "Network Notification"
Then tap the menu button (to the left of the home button) and tap "advanced"
Select "Wi Fi sleep policy" and set it to "When screen turns off"
Your battery life will improve drastically. Just drain the battery fully, and give it a full charge.
Let me know if this helps you.

how regular, 3-5 seconds or so?
I updated to CM 7.1 RC1 last week and I've noticed a few times where the device has locked up after "going to sleep". Essentially, if I leave it on the coffee table with WiFi on and let the screen turn itself off, it won't respond when I return to it 20-30 minutes later. I have to force reboot via the power button + nook button.
Just curious if anyone else has noticed it or if it's just me. If it's a common issue I'll escalate to the CM folks, if it looks like just me I'll start the long and tedious process of uninstalling apps one by one. =)
I have at least one every day. I figure its just a price I pay. Over all its the best rom I have used.

Only once have I had the issue you described. I leave WiFi on some of the times, but majority of the time I have it off when I am done using it. I know some people have mentioned using Tasker or something similar to turn WiFi off when screen goes off so that it can perhaps be prevented.

That's a pretty generic statement... what did you blacklist within Droid wall to increase battery life / fix the issue?
I'm facing random freezes when I open an application like tweetdeck or mercury and leave it updating from the internet. After some time, I'm not using it, it just stucks. To get it back to life I have to press for a few seconds the power button to shutdown it and then again to power it on. I have used different nightlies, voltages or governors but it is still here.
Now, I don't have freezes since yesterday that I really reduced the voltages but I'm not sure if my problem is solved.
configuration: 144 nightly 300-1100mhz xlv profile
not sure if anyone has told you that what you describes is called:
Sleep of death.
Felt to be possibly related to wifi being on all the time. In wifi settings, go to advanced change it wifi to off when screen off.

Are there any UK Desire Z owners out there who are successfully running Cyanogenmod 7? I'm running v7.0.3 and it keeps rebooting spontaneously.

You could try nightlys if you are set on CM7, in fact I think there is a new stable version coming out soon.
Do you overclock?
I have the Canadian version and in the US (if that helps) and have ran Cyanogen 7.0.3, 7.1.0 RC1 and all the nightlies without reboots..
You should try re-downloading and re-flashing to see if that fixes your problem.
I'm currently trying Virtuous G-Lite to see if it helps. So far so good after 7 hours (i.e. no reboots).
I've also noticed that I can now get access to data roaming services (I'm away in Portugal). With CM7 I was unable to access the local GPRS service. Does this maybe suggest a compatibility issue between CM7 any my radio?

Interesting. Seen some complaints in the Nightly thread but I personally have never had the issue.
Definitely not kernel/setting related, a fresh flash of any flavour of CM 7,broken out of the box, which is a shame as I really like it.
When you say you have never had the issue,is that because you have never tried to stream anything with the screen off ?or that that wifi sleep policy actually works?

Yeah but does it actually stay on? A good way to test is to try streaming internet radio,I am still connected but after a couple of minutes playback becomes choppy, phone still claims to be connected.

The Fact That The Radio Continues To Play Means You're Still Connected.
The "Choppiness" Will Be Due To The CPU Down-clocking While The Screen Is Off.
I'm A UK User Running CM7 And All Is Well. WiFi Sleep Policy Is Set To Never And I Always Receive E-Mail Notifications On My Phone Before My PC Notices So It Does Work! I'm Running One Of The Newest Nightly Builds.
Try Running SetCPU And Setting Up A Screen Off Profile To Up The Clock-speed Above Standard As It Goes Very Low When The Screen Is Off.
This Will Impact Your Battery Life But If You Find The Minimum Frequency Required To Eliminate The Choppy Playback You Can Live With It.

Just to clarify my problem once more, doing anything over wifi with screen on is fine, streaming, uploading to dropbox, etc but after a couple of minutes with the screen off my transfer rate crashes, the wifi is going onto a power save as I am still connected(wifi connected icon still there), CM7 is the only ROM that I have this problem with,I use Unity and with screen off there are no problems, dont see how underclocking affects this as on Unity my screen off clock is 245Mz. I know you use the example of email notification, have you tried uploading files with screen off or streaming?
If that works then could you please send me a copy of your logcat to compare to my output?
I tried it no problems. But i prefer htc sense with android 2.2.
If ive was to choose a different rom apart from sense stock roms then it has to be miui.
Its fast and ui is superb.
Hey guys, i'm using acronium ics 1.0 with stock kernel plus cwm. First night and the next morning it's like 50% battery overnight.
And the andriod system have them most! It usually goes to the display in GB. any potential issues here or how do i fix that?
Same problem here. I am using doom kernel v4.
Anyway try to use wifi or 2g if possible. The battery is awesome!

So the problem was caused by GSM data?
I'll try turn it off and see what happen.
Is this only acronium? or the ICS?
1/ Try to reset your phone after charge ...
2/ Remove some file in init.d if (1) isn't solution.
3/ Try another kernel

1) definitely not helping
2) don't know what to do
3) worth a try
from the other threads this problem could be caused by baseband .70, so maybe flash back to .64 is the cure. Not tested yet
I have arconium ICS 1.0 and stock kernel with CWM, the overnight drain is about 10% with everything on (Bluetooth, GPS, 3G, Wifi, etc)
What I did notice however is if you switch off Wifi the drain gets higher, try leaving on the Wifi and see if that helps.
I am using the official ICS Nordic rom and also had problems with the battery retaining the charge. Have changed the following and it seems to be ok now.
Go into settings/wifi and press the menu key
Go into advanced/Keep WIFI on during sleep and change settings to Only when plugged in.
Also try this
Go into settings/Developer Options Put a tick in Stay awake and then immediately Untick it. Do a restart and should be ok.
It's a long shot but it may just work for your ROM
I flash back to CM7 and happy now. Might wait and see for a while for another try for ICS.
I try the tips you guys provided (btw, thx!) and nothing changed. It's always power hungry plus GSM data slow and problematic. I can't even play funghi and temple run properly. On my drive back home the device just reboot itself, and all I did was using stock music player.
