Yes yes we all know but we can`t do anything about it

Has more RAM than Galaxy S. They were both advertised as 512 MB but Galaxy S had 512 physical memory while Duo probably has 640 MB physical. Think i9000 and i9003.

That is true for high RAM devices like Galaxy S II, as there is still plenty of RAM left, but 128 MB is actually a significant difference for low RAM devices like ours. The HTC Desire with 576 MB RAM (64 MB more than Galaxy S) couldn't even get a proper Gingerbread update due to RAM shortages as they had to fit Sense in. Imagine Galaxy S with 4.0 and Touchwiz? It's "impossible", by that I mean you won't even be able to multitask and run the device properly with all that Samsung bloat on top of it.
Galaxy S would run an AOSP properly because it is nowhere near as bloated as Touchwiz but no manufacturer (except google) has released such an update.

Also, keep in mind the issues we just ran into with our phones' jellybean update. The faster NAND on the device is limited; I guess this is just bad foresight on samsung's part. Raw ICS/Jellybean was already too big to fit onto the NAND. Put in Touchwiz apps and customizations and you need a much bigger NAND to fit it all in.

[Q] i9000 RAM=384MB LP DDR1+128MB oneDRAM?

I just found this picture
dev.odroid.com/wiki/odroid-t/pds/FrontPage/s_blockdiagram.jpg
So does it mean only 384MB DDR is available in system?
May be this is the reason why 305M ram shows in JP3 firmware.
That could make sense.
I wonder what the difference between them is?...Could one be dedicated to the GPU or in charge of background stuff?
Did anyone notice MFC 1080p 30 fps there?
That system block diagram isn't a Samsung official one, and frankly, i think it's wrong.
If the main memory in the Galaxy S was LPDDR1, we'd see lower GPU performance, MUCH lower. Memory bandwidth is everything when it comes to GPU on mobile devices like this.

GPU RAM must be OneDRAM,OneDRAM is much faster than normal DRAM.
You can google "OneDRAM".
So I guess we might not really have 512MB of ram (as advertised)... isn't it? I mean, if these MBs are reserved to GPU use only. There will come a day when they will be needed for other use than graphics :|.
They are not reserved for GPU use only.
OneDRAM is like an intersection for routing information with as-little-as-possible blockades in the middle.
Splitting the memory to "conventional" ram and onedram is going against the very principal of onedram. I am having a hard time to believe they actually did that.

This. You'll find a lot of press about the Galaxy S having 512mb RAM, but where does Samsung itself advertise this? I cannot find anything about it anywhere on Samsungs website. Maybe we should ask them?
GSMarena pressed on the issue when the phone was released, and samsung replied that there are indeed 512MB.
Lol....So do we actually know if it has 512MB of RAM or not? As some others have stated it might help explain why the Sammy has lag issues and the Desire does not..
BTW, I dont own either at present and am just going by what I have read in these forums.
That diagram also doesn't list wireless N, does that mean our phones don't have wireless n???

well..... using my onboard math processor I compuete that 384+128 = 512..
So samsung wouldnt have been lying if they had said there was 512.. even if 128 might be dedicated to the gpu or something else. 512+128 would have been nicer though.
I wonder if this diagram is accurate.
The picture is of ODROID-T which is a tablet style device for developers.
Its hardwares are quite similar to SGS but I don't think this block diagram should be showing exactly the same informations as SGS's.
Have a look at this site;
http://dev.odroid.com/wiki/odroid-t/
Well, the S5PC110 doesn't have the memory built in beforehand. It's changeable, the controller supports OneDRAM, LPDDR1 and LPDDR2. You can stick whatever you want in there.
Remember that only what's in the blue square is the actual SOC.

How does this differ from the HTC Desire setup? I know it has 576 MB RAM, but not sure how its split up...
Well, I checked before posting. Google for an official press release from Samsung Australia. Xda is not letting me post external links due to my low number of posts. However, I love my S. I'm just saying that this mem thing is starting to smell a little bit of i7500, from a customer relations' POV. Let's just hope we actually have a different design and that, as rumors say, new kernels will unlock all available ram.

I also found a tear down analysis of Korean version galaxy s.
The author said it has "4Gb NAND+3Gb DDR+1Gb OneNand",which is incorrect.
Some comment below said it is OneDram actually.
If not for the OneDram,How can samsung declare 90M triangles/sec instead of powerVR's figure of 28M triangles/sec.
OneDram is more expensive than DDR.
I guess samsung does't say anything about RAM because it's a different structure, and hard to explain.
gosh i have been lurking on these forums to buy this phone
but with this memory issue it seems like the OMNIA II all over again
there the phone was advertisied with 512mb but only so little was left to the user!!

[Q] 340mb ram instead of 512mb?

My tw taskmanager shows only 340mb ram instead of 512mb, after some research I found that the rest of the ram is used for ramdisk,is that true?
If so,is there a way to use all of 512mb for ram?And does this make Epic inferior to Vibrant,Captivate and Fascinate or better?
All Galaxy S phones have 512 MBs of RAM. And I do believe all are the same. At least the i9000 and the Epic are.
The phone has a physical 512MB of RAM, but I don't believe that the stock kernel currently supports more than 340MB.

Check your built in taskmanager(by holding home button),it only shows 324mb total ram,so no they not all the same.Yes we do have 512mb but only 324mb(give or take few mb) is used for actual ram,the rest is used as ramdisk(cache).Vibrant and Captivate uses whole 512mb as ram and internal rom(hd) for cache,im not sure about original Galaxy or Fascinate.
Believe me extra ram not being available has huge impact on performance,i owned MT3gs with 512mb ram and 600mhz cpu and it felt just as fast as my Epic if not faster even with Sense.
This could explain big lag im getting with 4-5 apps open,i could have 10 apps open on Mytouch slide with no lag.

There is a reason why. There is no dalvik cache push to sd for our devices yet. If we could get an ext2 or ext3 or ext 4 for our sd cards and move the cache there, it would be a whole new ball game. But it's no availible for us yet
Maybe to balance the phones out because epic has 2 cameras and keyboard

I wonder if other models have same ram or they have full 512mb of usable ram without ramdisk, and does that makes epic faster or slower?
I know my MT3gs was way faster with stock sense 600mhz cpu and 512 ram(without sd cache),sounds like this phone needs that extra 128+ram because extra ram makes more difference than faster cpu,324mb ram I dont think is sufficient for 2.1 to run smoothly.Hope someone comes up with something so we can use whole 512mb as ram and internal rom or sd for cache.
The reason why we have only 320 showing is because samsung moved the cache there to prevent the lag some people here talkming about the galaxy s having.

supposedly the GPU uses 128mb of the ram
All 5 galaxy s phones have 512mb but the epic and fascinate are limited to the 300 and something because our phones are the only ones that don't have a massive amount of internal sd like the others. We ours uses the more typical smaller amount of rom and the missing ram is used to stop touchwiz from lagging! Why do manufacturers and carriers keep ****ing up android!? Love this device but I can customize it myself just fine without the extra tw layer eating my resources and slowing my upgrade releases!

We have 512mb rom which can be used for cache,i have all the apps I need installed in /system/app folder and still have 400mb free, how much should be dedicated to android swap 128,256?So there is plenty of room and for those people that have about 100 apps on they phone they need to wait for a2sd.
Still no one has answered if its possible to use whole 512mb for ram, this phone really neads it,most of the time I have 3-4 apps open and about 80mb ram free-thats not good.Epic has fastets rom out of any model, now if we could use it for cache and a2sd for apps, plus whole 512mb as ram, than this thing would fly.128 for swap is a waste, plus I think that this 128mb actualy takes away from GPU's vram.
I agree that we need more RAM. There has to be a way to edit the kernel and get more out of our hardware.

Nexus S 328 MB of RAM? ?

The Nexus S details are a little more enlightening. Keep in mind the original version might have been scrapped, so these leaked specs are subject to change:
ArmV7 CPU Open GL ES Supported
~328 MB Ram
1 GB Internal Memory
800×480 Resolution 4″ Super Amoled (2?)
Screen 720p Video Recording
T-Mobile (at least this one)
Source: androidandme.com
I really do hope these specs are wrong. I was going to buy this phone for sure. I really was. Despite how everyone has been hating it for being by Samsung and being plastic. I was still going to get it. But now? Forget it. I don’t care if it has a dual code processor and great screen. It needs to have 1 GB of RAM or 768 MB at least. This phone may be ugly but it needs to have amazing specs and no GPS problems or any lag problems. Otherwise I will stick with my nexus one.
I will believe it comes with only 328MB RAM when I see it in front of me.
I'd say its a typo.

dual core ? oh, okay dokay.
see, typos aren't targeting creatures. they can strike anyone, anytime. obviously it was meant to say 328Gb, and 1Tb on the not-here-yet S.
just wait.
The Nexus S probably only showed 328 MB FREE, if I remember correctly the GPU in the Hummingbird dedicates a ton of RAM to itself. This phone definitely needs at least 768 MB leaving 5xx MB free.
If it's 512MB (which it currently looks like), 1GB of ROM and the same Hummingbird, I'll pass. I'll just wait for CM to port 2.3 to the EVO and wait for the HTC dual cores.
id hope it doesn't have 328 mb ram
Just sounds like a Galaxy S then really.
All the people whining about lack of RAM - did you ever bother to check the amount of free RAM at any given time on Nexus One since Froyo?
Well, I guess you didn't, since Nexus doesn't go below 160MB free RAM, and you need to work hard to make it go below 200MB - which is a HUGE waste. You want to waste even more? 1GB of RAM? Really? Did you see applications that can use 1/10 of it?
328MB RAM can't come with the phone, because 99% of the time RAM comes in powers of 2, and very rarely there are 3 banks used, making the last multiplier 3 instead of 2. 328MB doesn't fit anywhere, so it's not a real number.

As I stated earlier, it's probably 512 MB but the GPU in the Hummingbird dedicates a huge chunk of it for itself. The Adreno 200 GPU in the Nexus One still leaves over 500 MB free -- 5xx MB vs 328 MB is a HUGE difference. So that considered, it'd be a huge step down from the Nexus One if it doesn't at least have 768 MB to even things out.

Trust me if this doesn't at least have double the amount of ram that this article says it has then that is a major mistake imo. Time will tell though.
512MB of RAM should be more than sufficient. Here is a quote from Dianne Hackborn, Android Framework Engineer
The Nexus One has 512MB of RAM and honestly that is really more than we know what to do with. It is great. I ended up putting some code into the
activity manager to put a hard limit on the number of processes we would
keep around, because there was so much memory we had often could keep way
more processes than was useful. That was never an issue on Droid.

The Nexus != SGS/Nexus S
Again, you're forgetting about the available RAM. I just checked my EVO (very similar CPU/GPU) running CM6.1 and I was wrong about the 5xx figure, it actually has 424 MB to use. That's almost a 100 MB difference. And what if apps get more complex/heavy? Dual cores are around the corner so why not?
It sounds like a great phone but no better than my vibrant. Its the new generation of android so I would expect new gen hardware like high Res screen, 1080p and all those other great things. The vibrant has amazing hardware so the next generation will be mind blowing, to me anyway. I see no reason to move to the nexus s. I have a nexus one so ill get gingerbread and the S is not better enough to upgrade from a nexus one or vibrant. I understand that they just want a phone on which to release gingerbread but it seems a bit thrown together last minute, not a lot of effort, which is fine but I don't want to have to hear stupid things about Google phones not selling well, as if that's some sort of negative for android generally. I would expect that by now people that want a nexus one or vibrant type hardware already have it so this phone may not sell well. Plus people that know anything are going to be waiting to hear about the next stage of hardware. Definitely not worth jumping on unless you are coming from a lesser phone than the nexus or galaxy s, hardware-wise. On second thought if the GPS works like it does on the nexus one I'd seriously consider selling my vibrant for it. I'm appauled that the vibrants GPS still doesn't work, the most frustration I've experienced with android since its 2008 release is when in the middle of a navigation the screen starts spinning and doesn't regain its composure, happens literally every time. Hell now I think I'm pumped about this phone, I can stop carrying my damn nexus just for the GPS. Its no way to live.

The I9000 (SGS Amoled with Samsung SoC) is advertised as 512Mb Smartphone, like the I9003 (SGS LCD with Texas Instrument SoC) also. The I9000 have physically 512Mb RAM in the SoC, the 9003 have 640Mb, and you can see this difference between Stock Samsung ROM in 2.3.6 and the 128 Mb make a difference with LMK usage. End of story.

Samsung doesn't care about customers on long term stages the only interesed that you buy new deveices every year.Apple is much better at this stage they care about it that their devices are updated and users satisfided.
So If you don't like apple you can buy nexus device this device is also up to date.

Sales of i9003 are very different of i9000. And people who doesn't care to have a 9003 (SLCD, less powerful GPU, etc. etc. than i9000) mainly doesn't care to have Android 4.x instead of 2.3.x because their smartphone WORKS in 2.3.x. If you want a bleeding edge smartphone, go with the Nexus line, not a consumer line. Period.

SGS3 vs HTC One X RAM

Hello guys... I'm galaxy S3 user. I just want to know that Galaxy s3 & htc one x has same 1 GB ram but for galaxy s3 its showing 778 mb ram in hardware information but htc showing proper 1 gb ram. why this is? Infact, i noticed all htc have same ram as in hardware information bar. Mean s3 have less ram acording to htc one x?
Some RAM is reserved for camera, hardware decoder, etc. I doubt HTC used separate memory chip for each of these, so ONE X software must be reporting false values.
BTW, there are 833 mbytes of RAM available on latest JB leaks, and enthusiasts are looking for a way to increase this number further.
How dare you mention that name here
Be gone foul beast, back to the lair I say, back!
Just enjoy your phone.

Thanx all for giving information. But some says that ram reserved for system & some says reserved for camera & hardware.. hhhmmm then what about htc ram? Is it shows proper 1GB ram included reserved system ram or excluded system ram as sgs3 has.??? By mean as shows 778 mb out of 1GB then where is 222 mb ram which is left. Is 222 mb ram reserved for system use?
One X has more free Ram but everyone who tried both says S3 uses it's Ram better, and the US proves bigger isn't always better.

You are wrong. This has nothing to do with the phones themselves but chip manufacturers. Look at the HTC One X LTE versions, they only have 600mb of RAM.
Yes the International version has close to 1GB of RAM free. This is mostly due to Tegra 3 having dedicated video ram to their GPU where the Exynos and S4 do not.

Yes, we can squeeze out as much ram as possible but I believe a good portion of it will always be reserved for hardware.
I did a lot of studies with my US One X and the International One X.
Anyways, to answer your question it is the Tegra 3 chip set that has 1GB of RAM, it's like that on the Asus transformer also.
Compare the US One S and One X, you see the same Ram usage pretty much and same SoC. But the international with Tegra 3 and everything else that uses a Tegra 3 from what I have seen (there might be some with 4glte radios that require ram also) has 1GB of RAM.

No, not at all. RAM, CPU and (if the gui is properly programmed) GPU can all affect how your phone functions and feels. The S3 uses a more better engineered chip set than the Tegra in the CPU and GPU department.
Most importantly is software though. As the way things are, if Android doesn't figure out a way to optimize their OS to universally work for any kind of hardware it might lose out to WP8.
Not in the hacking department though since WP8 will be closed source.

Tegras don't have dedicated GPU RAM, they don't differ to the Exynos in the way they handle that. The reason is purely software based, and some SoCs having reserved memory spaces for internal functions. I have now 856mB useable on my kernel for example.

See that would make sense if every Tegra device from different companies like Asus, htc and Motorola, etc would have different ram uses since they all build their roms with custom ui, etc. Every company has their own custom kernels as well. But that is not the case, or is it a giant coincidence most if not all the Tegra devices show .950 gb free of memory? Including the Nexus 7.

Sorry but no you don't know what you are talking about, Nvidia does the basic platform kernel for their SoC, the manufacturers don't do anything more than adapt it. ROM also doesn't have anything to do with it
