(Sorry, my mistake - I meant to post this in Q&A and just realised I posted this in General, could it be moved please?)
This seems really basic but it's been driving me mad. Don't know if it's just me?
First, in some apps the keyboard has no @ symbol and I can't find it whatever I do. In others you can long press the / key to get @. So the on-screen keyboard implementation seems inconsistent across apps. I tried switching to the US keyboard but it was the same, so it must be the app.
Secondly, the copy/paste functionality also seems inconsistent. In some apps I can long press and get the option to copy. In others, whatever I do I can't call up any copy option at all, only Paste. I found this out when I tried to enter an @ symbol in one app (whose keyboard didn't have the @ symbol) by pasting the symbol from another app.
Has anyone else got this issue please? Is there an easy way to get the @ symbol, and also to call up Copy?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

the @ symbol is left of the spacebar. Either hit caps (up arrow) to select it or hit the numbers button (123)
I often have hit or miss on copy/paste. copy works if you hold it over a word, so zoom in.

Regarding copy/paste, thanks very much dilldoe - zooming in and holding exactly over a word worked, cheers! (I'm too used to how the iPad works, I think - you don't even have to tap over a word there, as long as you're tapping somewhere in the box).
But regarding the @ symbol, that's the puzzling thing. Please see the screenshots attached. In Chrome on the standard Google search page, if I tap in the search box on the page itself, the @ symbol is right there to the left of the spacebar, I've outlined it in red.
However, if I tap in the Chrome address bar, you'll see that the on-screen keyboard is now different - the @ symbol is replaced by a colon ( ie : ), and with that particular keyboard it's impossible to locate the @ symbol. Tapping on 123 or to get to other symbols doesn't find it - there's a copyright symbol, and other symbols, but not the @ symbol!
I would have thought the on-screen keyboard should be consistent but even within the same app, as you'll see, it isn't...
It's not such an issue now that I can paste an @ symbol from elsewhere, but it's still odd and frustrating - is this an Android thing, or JellyBean, or app-dependent, please?

It's a keyboard issue. If it annoys you that much, just install another keyboard.
I thought that's due to the keyboard being contextual?
You don't need a @ in the URL bar? - so it rejiggles what keys there are?

That's correct, but I would consider it a bug that the symbol's not available anywhere.
I think the @ symbol isn't _allowed_ in html URLs...?

It normally isn't. The only instance I can think of is if you include your username and password in the url (not uncommon with ftp), but even then, it should prompt you for your login info if you don't provide it.

Cheers for all your thoughts and I agree, if it's a keyboard issue that's a bug with a keyboard.
As AZImmortal said, it's possible that you may need the @ symbol in URLs for username/passwords. But even if not, the fact that you can't call it up at all is in my view a bug, or error at least.

This is obnoxious as hell. I have a Nexus 7 and on the app IP Camera Viewer the @ symbol is not available so I cannot add in my IP camera for remote monitoring

It seems that when using swipe in portrait mode I cant get tap and hold to work. I.E selecting symbols and numbers.
It works well in landscape though.
Anyone have this issue? Is there a fix?
I (and others have mentioned it) gave up on the 3.9 swype for exactly that problem.
well that's not cool... I was getting good at it too. oh well, guess I'll deal with it till an update comes out.
thanks
Two things that helped me:
1) Set the error tolerance to maximum in the opitons.
2) Press on the top half of the button and keep your finger as steady as you can.
It works for me. Though, it is really really sensitive to movement. It does take some pratice and steady finger to get the tap-hold to work. It's usually the '?' that I'm going for. Sometimes it will produce 'mm' or 'mn'..
It seems like they need to make it less sensitive for movement if you're just holding one a single key and not swiping. Or make it deduce that I'm going for the '?' and NOT 'mm' which does not make much sense..

I had the same thing happen. A LOT of our Swype's are faulty. The trick is to google or search xda for Swype 2.0 wvga. This works LIKE ITS SUPPOSED TO. You can use it and the qwerty keyboard arrangement is arranged propertly on the numeric keyboard tab.

Thanks, I'm doing that now. What version came on TMOHD2?
Ok so I downloaded/installed the cab for Swype 2.0 with the htc skin
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=60494
The skin looks different, which is great, but swype acts the same. Doesnt allow symbols. Also when I go into "about swype" it is the same version and build date of 1/09
Did I do something wrong?

3.9 i believe. garbage (at least on mine).
So, does the Swype 2.0 wvga link fix the problem? Cause this press and hold BS is really driving me nuts.
EDIT Just downloaded, it seems to be SLIGHTLY more accurate/easier, but still not as simple as they make it look in the video, it's still quicker to switch tabs and type in whatever you need to.

I second this fix. However, you have to place your whole finger on top of the key (contacting the key to the left and right of the key you are trying to press as well) and hold in order to get the secondary set to work.
Swype settings are accessible via Settings tab, Menu, All Settings, Personal, Input, Swype Options.
EDIT: Nevermind, I was only getting lucky with the long press. It still seems to only work about 10% of the time with the 3.9 stock version.
Y not just use the symbol button? It's faster and better than pressing n holding. And as for using the ?, just pressit and drag or swype to the space bar. Same for . and !

For the ? symbol, there's an easy alternative - swype (drag) from the ? key to the spacebar. Wish all the symbols & numbers did the same thing, would prefer it over the click & hold method.
Also - everyone knows about dragging from the swype symbol to around the #5 to go to the numeric keypad and draw from the swype symbol to umm.. the one to the right to go to the arrows/copy/paste screen shortcut?
Anyway, my main Swype problems are this hold/press thing & how hard it is to do manual typing for usernames & password. It's for these reasons that I use SlideIT over Swype at the moment.
Yep... doesnt work for me either. Sucks having go to down and switch it to number mode just to select symbols but I still like it over the regular keyboard.

I was about to give up on swype because of the issue.
then I saw that space bar on random tutorial, it makes it a little bit easier, but still. other symbols are very annoying.
Oops mistake!
Search Google or XDA for SWYPE 2.0 for WVGA. All the problems will be solved. Swype 3.9 is horrid. 2.0 is the truth.
Testing out version 2 on my TMOUS (version 3.9 by drefault). So far seems to be working much better - I can press & hold & get the alternate puncuation/numbers (although I still say sliding any alternate keystroke to the spacebar would be better).
QUESTION - how the heck do I get to options on this version? In 3.9 you went to symbols & help the Swype key down. Google says I click the arrow (stock rom, so 6.5.1) & go to options, but I only gen sense-like options instead.
There another way to get to the options in 2.0 ?

HTC/ Microsoft and Swype don't make it easy do they:
1. Go to settings tab on sense
2. tap menu
3. selct "all settings"
4. select "personal" folder
5. select "input options"
6. BAM!
I've done some googlin' and talked to a few different people, but I still can't find an answer to this.
Is there any way to type an up caret (The ^ character) using the physical keyboard? I've tried long-pressing everything, and I found > and <, but not ^! >.<
I've searched and searched. You're not the only person that's missing the caret! There's a big group of us out here.
At least that can be fixed with a software update. I hope it's fixed on that vaporware-looking OTA...

The carat appears in the Android keyboard (not the physical). Press the number key (123) then press the ALT key. The ^ appears where the * was on the keyboard.
You're missing the caret, I'm missing the pipe (|grep "stuff" is made infinitely more annoying when having to bring up the software keyboard for one character).
I am stucking waiting for my Desire Z in the UK, but can't you assign it to one of the custom keys?
The pipe | could become a big issue for me as the main reason for a physical keyboard is for ssh.
I miss having quick access to it, too.
Hold down alt + j until a window comes up. The popup will let you chose the caret key. It's a bit of physical + virtual keyboard but it's better than having to close the phone to type the caret key.
Well the pipes there if you press alt then space see | but no caret. I'm suprised they have these though ≠≈∞±‰†‡ but no caret

anyone else using swype?
try double tapping a word to edit; you can't click the words in the list due to the new feature in 2.3.3 where you double tap a word and it goes to cut/copy menu.
frustrating if you use swype, nice if you use the normal keyboard and you get a word totally wrong.
comments?
Just tried that out it is annoying but I didn't use that way to edit anyway, I put the cursor in the word I want to edit and press the swype button. Idk if this is what anyone else does but works for me.

As spoken about by the ui lead designer in his engadget interview, they want to move away from waiting (pressing and holding).
While this is indeed annoying for swype users, the change is for the good of the entire text entry experience in android.
As an alternative, tap the word you want to select, then tap the swype key to select the word to edit. It only makes things a little slower.
Does anyone know how to move the cursor when using the keyboard, needing to add/delete a characters in the middle of a msg or text and repeated stabbing on my screen to get it in the right place is extremely frustrating anyone know a better way
I'm glad it's not just me, it must be hell on one of the lower end small screen devices. I have enough trouble on the X5!
btw langers, a little off topic but... have u tried 2degrees free facebook "zero" service??? when i try i get an error saying its not available from my carrier?? Just wondering whether its cos i'm not using my original stock rom
Facebook 0 works for me so you could be right
k thanks for that
Hey guys,
The reason you cant get onto FB 0 service is because you are using the APN internet.
This does not require a proxy and therefore o.facebook cant parse your mobile number to confirm you are indeed with 2degrees.
Try editing you APN and throwing 118.148.001.118 in the proxy and 8080 in the port.
If that doesn't work activate your WAP profile (it'll be called '2degrees') and see if that works.
If youre still having trouble give 2deg a call on 0800 022 022 and they'll sort you.
hope this helps
I'm using internet API and it works fine with no intervention/editing from me
YES!!!
cheers for that, worked a treat, didnt even realise those settings were even there, lol fairly new to the smartphone thing!!
i was using the internet apn as you said and once i switched it to 2deg all was good

No it's not a complaint
Just too eager for a solution of the keyboard cursor mover
Well the good news is, after hours of searching finally found a solution of sorts...the bad news is, it ain't free $3.75. BUT there is a free trial version, with nag screen. I'm using it now and have only been nagged once.
The cursor can be moved via arrow keys which are enabled thru the extensive settings menu.
The arrow keys up, down, left, right sit at the bottom of the keyboard and make editing easy peasy. As u can imagine it does take up a fair bit of yr screen and the keys are slightly smaller but I think there is a calibration setting 4 that.
What I do like is upper case numbers and symbols, so no need to change screens.
Prediction works really, really well 2.
A heap of languages are also supported.
All in all not a bad little k/b, so head 2 the market an check it out. Smart Keyboard Trial.
Oh, btw swype also has arrow keys 4 cursor control if that spins ye wheels!

e. lol a minute late
No luck for me as I have to stick with Chinese keyboards. I am looking for another app which adds a slider for text selection like how gingerbread implemented.

Ok, this is going to probably sound really dumb, but it's driving me nuts.
I've used Android for a few years now, and I've never sorted out if there's a way to scroll left and right in a text area.
No matter what keyboard I've used, I just end up deleting the whole dang thing, and typing from scratch, if it's text in a small window.
For example, if I typed a long url, and I realized after hitting enter that I must have made a typo. I'd like to go left to right in that bar and look for it easily.
I guess this has plagued me on every Apple and Android device I've owned. On RIM it was easy enough, and on older Symbian it was fine.
What the heck am I missing here?
Thanks!
Tap anywhere on the entered text - wait - there will be a blue arrow cursor below the text. Drag it whenever you want to start typing from.

Ah, it's a Firefox issue then. I tried chrome and it works in that (though I never really use chrome).
Ok thanks.
I was hoping there would be a convenient left and right key option on the keyboard itself, so that it wouldn't matter what app I'm using, but I guess it's tied to the app itself. That kind of stinks. It's rather awkward in design.
Do you know of an alternative keyboard that supports that type of functionality? I like the "Swpe-like" setup in the stock keyboard, but I'd much rather have an easier correction method built in.
You can enable the function to move the cursor using the volume rocker. It's in Settings - Language and Input - and that option will be down below the input methods
I miss the big keyboard with arrows from HTC Flyer though - it's pretty awesome to use in portrait mode, though not as useful in landscape since it takes much more space than N7's does
And no, I don't know about other keyboard since I don't use them, I prefer stock
