Hi,
I've just gotten my Vibrant over the weekend and now I'm noticing after I allow google.com to use the "location service" (first time it works fine), when I browses to some other sites then comes back to it, or just simply re-open the browser in a later time and goes back to google.com (mobile version btw), the browser just closes itself.
I've also tried a factory reset and still was able to reproduce this issue.
Now if I do NOT allow the location service, everything would be working fine.
Is anybody else having the same issue?
my phone is not rooted.
Thanks.
Happening to me to, very very frustrating
Its probably due to the GPS. Try turning it off or applying the temp. fix.
the flash plugin has been giving me a bunch of browser crashes, not sure if that is you issue but seems to work for me with it turned off
It started happening to me today. It was working all this week with locations turned on and google as my home page, however this morning I opened the browser and it closed by itself, repeatedly. I realized that it had something to do with location as it closed imediately after "updating location". I set the browser not to use the location and now it works fine.
However, now I get "location unavailable" and a link to update. If I click update, then the browser closes, so it seems to be related to lbs.
What I don;t understand is why it started happening yesterday, after a week of normal operations.
I really hope the GPS and compass are fixed in the next release/OTA update, otherwise, back to my nexus one.
Did anyone ever find a fix for this? It happens intermittently on my phone. I turn off location sensing and use it for a while that way and it works fine. Usually, I can re-enable location the next day and everything is okay for a few days before it starts automatically closing again.
Time to use m.bing.com
Google.com force closing
Happened to me too. Here's the fix:
Go into browser. Before it finishes loading Google.com, go into Settings and disable Location and Plugins.
Now use a task killer to fully kill the browser.
The final step is to go into the browser again and re-enable everything.
Did it work for you?
On an unrelated note, this seems like a Galaxy-S bug:

I figured the reason why we're waiting so long for the GPS fix is because it's being bundled in with other fixes.

Well this quote squashes any hope of getting Froyo in sept along with the GPS fix since they are calling it a Maintenance release. I was hoping they were going to give us a surprise with the GPS and bug fixes for all of our troubles...
I asked about this issue a long time ago when the Vibrant was first released. No proposed solution consistently works. Therefore I just leave location off for Google.com. Try using the application "Places" as an alternative to the Google.com location-enabled local search.
Hopefully this bug is fixed in the future.

I don't know why, but mine seems to have mysteriously fixed itself. I even have the gps on to find out if it WILL close by itself and..nothing. It works fine now after two and a half weeks of not working. Finds my location and doesn't close.

Just give it a bit and it will start crashing again ;-p
Just kidding, hopefully it stays working for you. For those of us for whom it doesn't work, check out places directory in the market.

Hey guys,
No matter what, I get the "Unable to Connect" error when trying to connect to my Gmail on Chrome-to-Phone. I've uninstalled, reinstalled etc but nothing. Other Google apps seem to work fine I think.
I'm already connected to this account in this app on my Droid X, so I know it should work. Same goes for my Nook Color previously, worked fine. Why wouldn't it work on this?
Also, in the YouTube tablet app, some videos I try to watch, the second it hits the video screen and the little loading circle starts spinning, the app freezes and then force closes. More than 50% of the videos seem to work, but some (namely certain ones I click from the widget that are featured, which is weird) freeze up right away and FC on me. Any answers to this one yet?
Thanks.
I definitely get the youtube force closes. No idea whats causing it.
Well I bet that one's pretty common.
But does anyone know how to make Chrome to Phone work? This is killing me!
I have the same chrome to phone problem on my Tab and Thunderbolt. Its really annoying because I use it all of the time.
np with Chrome2Phone here - it's just a little slow sometimes.
Try: Force Stop, Clear Cache for the app & restart.
You seeing any message in your logs? (adb logcat)

Nope, tried clearing/uninstalling...nothing works, just get unable to connect.
EDIT: I did a logcat on my PC while trying to connect to Chrome to Phone, and the section that contains tons of mentions of Chrome to Phone is freakin over 14,000 characters long, much too long to paste in here. How do I know what to look for in there??? (A hell of a lot of activity happens instantly).
Google has some arbitrary limit of number of devices that you can connect to your chrome to phone account. If you use a different Google account, you should be fine. If you unregister one of your devices, you should be fine.
The problem comes from us crack-flashers that forget to unregister before flashing a new ROM. If you have a nandroid backup of a ROM where you are still registered, restore it and unregister, then restore back to whatever you were using before. I've even gotten it to work on my tablet by unregistering on my phone and then restoring a backup to regain the registration on my phone.
I've also heard that the old registrations expire after a while. I can't verify that, though.

You'll see something that looks like a stack-trace.
It has to be fast - your phone does a lot without you knowing about it
Your best bet is to: adb logcat > capture.txt
Run through the app.
Open & explore.
You'll find a group of lines that look something like:
Code:
D/ContactsSyncAdapter( 517): at com.google.wireless.gdata2.client.GDataServiceClient.convertHttpExceptionForWrites(GDataServiceClient.java:466)
The specific content will vary depending on what apps is crashing.
Feel free to IM me the log and I'll help point out the error.

Ok so the too many devices thing is it. I think 2 is the limit. I am linked through my Droid X and was linked to my Nook Color. The problem is that I factory restored (reflashed stock Nook firmware) the Nook to sell it and no longer have access to Chrome to Phone on that device (I assumed it would disconnect the link for me?). It has stock firmware, so no Android apps or anything. Yet the only way I can get it to connect on my Tab is to disconnect on my Droid X app. I don't want to disconnect on there obviously.
How can I disconnect what it thinks is still a link to my Nook Color without actually even having it on the device?? I want to have it link to my DX and my Tab- this will work but I don't see any outside way to unlink it from my Nook? Grr
Basically now, my Tab is connected fine but now the same issue is with my DX, so I still need to figure this out.
Also, in my opinions, this limit of two is not great because what if you really have a legit third device and want to link? There is no quick way to switch between devices if there is a third, and nobody really wants to have two Google accounts just for this. Kinda stupid IMO.
I have had this issue for awhile on my Samsung Captivate and now my Galaxy tab. If there is a limit, I need to figure out how to remove the old ones. Does any one know how to remove devices? I do not currently have it connected on any devices so I should be able to have it running no problem but I get the same message as the OP when I try.

Um OK, so I bit the bullet, took the Nook out, reflashed CM7, logged into Google, downloaded Chrome to Phone...all so I can do what I thought would work and log in to Chrome to Phone and then disconnect again so that the device would now longer be linked. I did that, and now I cannot connect on any of my three devices.
Are you serious?? How are people supposed to deal with this? There is no device management for the account/app anywhere. Can someone please help me make this work? I don't know what to do at this point..
I even tried connecting CTP on the Nook to my other Google account to see if it would really unlink my original account, but I still can't login with the original account on any device!! Oh my freakin God

The wildly unhelpful google search link didn't relate to my specific issue. Those are all from folks that couldn't open the Play store at all. I'm having the same issue that Rooney was having, where it only happens when I try scrolling down in "my apps". Otherwise it works fine. Did you ever get a solution to this? I've already contacted Google, and their tech guy said, "I'm stumped." He's escalating it, but in the meantime I thought I'd see if you were ever able to get it fixed, since this is the first time I've seen someone else with this specific iteration of the issue. Thanks in advance.

Try uninstalling the latest Play updates in settings/apps/all apps and wipe Play data, reboot and try again. Its a Google server issue responding. There is lots of info available on Google regarding this error, i suggest you try finding it too
I ran into this on my new Tabpro 8.4 last sunday. My Note 3 has no such issue with the same account. Kept doing it at the exact same scrollpoint every time.
Wiping data, rebooting, clearing cache, none of it helped.

I also contacted Google and they give me instruction like checking time and storage!, etc
and that didn't help me at all, so i went back and told them that and they ask me to make a factory reset to one of my devices (because i have 5 devices signed in with one Google account)
so, now i am factory resetting my Note 3 and updating the system to ND5
please let me know if you have any updates :good:

You sir are a moron. If you don't know the answer then don't bother posting. I hated when I see a post like this especially I already search on Google and came here and see such useful post.
To op, I just ran into this problem and solved by removing my google account and re-add it.
Hope it helps.

Again, the info on Google does not relate to this particular problem. Every thread I've found (other than this one) relates to people that can't access the Play store at all, with this error code. However, the specific problem we are having is this error code showing up only in one specific scenario...when going to "all apps" and trying to scroll down the list. Otherwise the Play store works perfectly fine.
I can't speak for Rooney, but I've already tried most of the suggestions from those source (removing/re-adding Google account, wiping cache and data, uninstalling updates, changing device time, etc), but the problem persists.

i tried literally everything, remove my Google account, remove some old unused apps in the "all apps" tab i don't need, factory reset my note and 2 other of my devices , update my Note 3 to ND5, but with no luck
even the tech support in Google after 96 hours have no idea what is causing the problem and he sent it to a tier for further review
My new NotePro is also doing the same thing. My Note 3 is not, nor is my TF700T. One S3 is, the other is not. It makes no sense whatsoever.
So for the past few days, when I do a google search in the stock browser on my S5, certain sites (I'm guessing only sites that have Play Store apps) are redirecting me to their play store app page... To be clear, I'll search for something and get a result that should link me to IMDB.COM -- but if I click that result, I get send to the IMDB APP page on Google Play... If I hold down the link and hit OPEN or OPEN IN NEW TAB, it will actually take me to the sites mobile page in the browser like normal.
Any idea what's causing this? I've cleared the browser cash and data, I've cleared Play Store defaults as well. I've tried removing all the individual web page settings inside the browser. I've done a ton of searches and found nothing.
I've actually now noticed that every time I try to link to a youtube video from a google search it just goes to "webpage not available." Again, if hold down on the link and hit OPEN or OPEN IN NEW TAB, it works...
This just started happening out of the blue and I have no idea what changed... And it's super annoying.
Any help greatly appreciated!
I agree. the same thing has happened to me and my wife's phone. When we google search in a browser on our androids, many links will direct back to the "play store" app. Same symptoms and reactions, when long tapping the links to open in new tab, the function works perfectly. And another temporary solution is to activate "desktop mode" if available in the browser, and it won't open the app store, but of course, depending on your device and the browser app, desktop mode can be a little sluggish
Please XDA developers, if any of you know how to solve this issue please let us know. Otherwise it'll be safe to assume that google is leveled up their reign of terror, beginning at relentlessly invading privacy, and now hijacking user experience by literary using actual malware techniques.

Nope, this is different. The article talks about the option of installing apps directly from search results (i.e. the user sees an "install" button inline with search results). Whereas here, the search results themselves are redirecting to the Play store, with no option to keep browsing the link in the browser.

Yes, which could be related to the roll out / bugs during it
Seems slightly coincidental that Google search results are redirecting to the play store, at the same time as Google is rolling out the ability to install apps directly from the results

This has suddenly fixed itself... Links now working normally again for me. Strange. Seems like this might have been some Google roll out bug as Detection mentioned.
Anyway, working for now. My Youtube links still only open in browser (instead of in app) but I'll live with that, I guess.
Thanks!

Check in settings > default applications, that the browser is not set as default for youtube, if it is, clear it, and next time you open a youtube link, it should give the option to choose the app and set that as default
Or reinstall the YT app, and it should auto clear the default

Is it possible that google has superior control over any android device, regardless of the type of rom? where If google wanted to, they can roll out some crazy beta test on everyone's devices and then stop it again, after they've collected enough information from their tests? Whereby making useless the option an android owner gets for allowing google to monitor their device for app malfunctions or not.
My browser is acting normal now too. It seems really weird that a very particular action that is mostly found in malware was forcefully applied to our android browsers, (i don't use chrome, bur the default browser app in my stock rom) for the same amount of time before being taken away. And i know for a fact that it wasn't with anything i've done. Owning android devices for a very long time now (and customizing the such and PCs too) is more than enough experience for me to know that this is no accident, nor foul interpretation of settings on my part.
Just how worthless have these systems and devices become? Is there any safety left anywhere?
Hello all. I just noticed an issue that I dont remember having before. My Shield is updated to whatever the current official release is, and I might be rooted, can't remember (every update unroots me, cant remember if I re-rooted before or after the last update..). So the issue is, when I use the Voice commands to search anything, it applies very heavy censoring using Google's preferred logic (for instance, the word "porn" is censored but another dirty P-word is not..? I tested a ton of dirty words and it made no sense what it decided was bad and what was ok...). In the Shield's settings I have safe search off as well as the bad word filtering in the Voice settings disabled. I tested voice searching and voice to text input on my phone using the same Google account and it doesnt censor anything... Anyone have any idea how to resolve this? I Google'd around and all I found were a number of people saying they also have this issue, and it seems to have sprung up out of the blue. But it wasnt any help as there was no resolution, the reports spanned from 2011ish to 2016, and there was no common device or Android OS version...
also, JFYI, I noticed this issue by trying to search for SourceFed's video where they attended the hentai convention. "SourceFed Hentai Con" said aloud to my Shield resulted in it searching for "SourceFed H***** Con," and Youtube ignoring the H***** and just giving me every result containing "SourceFed" and/or "Con." Manually typing the word into the search on the Shield yielded the desired result, though... I am certain I have been able to voice cuss words in the past to look up songs on Youtube, but I cant give even a vague guess at when this censoring began for me..
Do you happen to have a different google search installed? A sideloaded version of the phone google search? If so, that has some voice settings too.
But if you are just using the inbuilt search function, maybe try changing language first, to a different english, then check the filters again etc. And try enabling blocking offensive words, use it, reboot, uncheck?
Or else, go to settings, apps, then in system apps select Google Search and Uninstall updates. Then it will reinstall updates probably, or do it manually via Play Store. And try Clear Data as well.
If that doesn't work, sign out of your google account. and last resort, factory reset?
Ive tried much of what you suggested already, but Ill give the rest a shot (changing languages temporarily and uninstalling/reinstalling updates mainly). If that doesnt work I will just have to live with it, not a big enough issue to warrant a factory reset lol. Thanks for the suggestions. I considered doing basically evertything you suggested, but figured it was unlikely to help. You also suggesting the same things makes me think there is a sliver of hope. Ill report back.
So, first thing I did was change the language to UK English and test it. Its not censoring voice search from the main menu, but IS censoring in Youtube only now. Changing back to US English, Youtube is censored and main screen searches arent. So, progress at least.

Disable Restricted Mode in the youtube settings?
Restricted Mode has always been disabled. Voice-searching Youtube on my phone isnt censored, I should have mentioned. So at the moment, across all of the Google ecosystem, for some reason the only thing being censored is voice search in Youtube on my Shield... Going to clear Youtube data and updates on the Shield and let it refresh itself and see what happens.
Now that you mention it, Youtube does filter out some words as well. It does show the word titties, but the word fu ck is with stars. Maybe it's just the youtube app?
I can say f you in the regular search option. in Youtube I see stars. So maybe it's just youtube censorship...

Yeah, it does seem to restrict outputting several words in the Youtube leanback app. In any language.
Maybe that's just built in the youtube app for tv.
You could consider using the phone/tablet youtube app. You can find it on the Aptoide app, or just download it from apkmiror.com and install it on your device. Then use an app (on the tv play store) called TV App Repo to create a shortcut on your Homescreen.
Maybe using the full youtube app will work. You can probably use the right stick on your controller as a mouse. Right trigger to click, hold to scroll. A to confirm, B for back.
EDIT: Tried it, the regular app doesn't seem to act any different. It uses the same voice overlay.
I actually used the regular app for a short time, as there are modded versions available that completely block ads, but it was entirely unusable for me. Barely even seemed to respond to input so all I could do was view front-page videos. Now I am doing the four month free trial of Youtube Red/Play Music, so no ads anyways haha. Thanks for your help though. Definitely looking to be no "fix" for this, but...I realized a very simple workaround. Doing the voice search from the main screen by default (for me at least) uses Youtube as its main results source. So I just have to remember if I need to search for anything with a potentially dirty word in it, just make sure to hit the Home button then the search button. I think that is an acceptable option, just not sure why Youtube's Leanback app has the restriction in the first place..

Yeah, I find it strange that there are apparently two voice search apps built-in. But indeed, searching from home does the trick.
