3g modem - Thinkpad Tablet General

Hi,
I receive tablet without 3g modem. I have SIM slot, but nothing happen when I put SIM card.
There are two version of tablet with or without 3g modem.
It is possible to add it ? I read manual, and probably Ericsson F5521GW is supported.
Can you confirm that ?
What about antenna ? It is bulit it tablet ?
This modem will be ok ? Can you check it ?
I found it on ebay New-Unlocked-Ericsson-F5521GW-F3507G-Wireless-3G-WCDMA-HSPA-WWAN-GPS-Mini-PCI-E-/260958383395?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cc254ed23

Got same problem as you. From what i read at lenovo community forum, only lenovo branded f5521gw will work.
Generic one is not guaranteed. So far i've read that one guy use his dell branded f5521gw module and tpt cannot detect it.
Sent from my LG-P930 using xda app-developers app

Anyone can confirm it ?
So what card I have to get to use 3g on my tablet ?
Is necessary additional antenna ?

It Works. Details Below:
I first tried a HP-branded f5521gw. I also tried the F3507gw and F3607gw, both Lenovo-branded.
The only one that will work is a Lenovo-branded f5521gw. I find that the activation process for "other carrier" is more reliable than the one for AT&T. After doing that, I no longer get modem crashes. A modem crash entails a "no network connection" error. If you get this error, re-activating the card for your network should do the trick. (Just make sure you're not accidentally starting a 2-year contract.)
Note that I am unable to root, because my software version was too new. There is still no root for ICS unless you used rookeeper from root on a 3.x version, which I was unable to do.

Lenovo branded card will work and also the generic could work.
There are some TPT that don't have the antenna inside on the no 3G version.
HP, Dell, Toshiba branded cards will not work, as they are using a different VID and PID.
Following cards are inside the WWAN loader:
Huawei EC226
USB\VID_12D1&PID_1001
Ericsson F5521gw
USB\VID_0BDB&PID_1911 <- Lenovo Card
USB\VID_0BDB&PID_190D <- Generic Card
USB\VID_0BDB&PID_1925 <- ? maybe Japanese version
USB\VID_0BDB&PID_1924 <- ? maybe Japanese version
Sierra Wireless MC8355 Gobi3000
USB\VID_1199&PID_9012
USB\VID_1199&PID_9013
USB\VID_1199&PID_9018
USB\VID_1199&PID_9019
Toshiba F5521gw has USB\VID_0930&PID_1314
Dell F5521gw (Dell Wireless 5550) has USB\VID_413c&PID_818d
HP F5521gw (HS2340) has USB\VID_03f0&PID_3A1D
That's why they are not detected.

Awesome
Thx for sharing.
Mine doesnt have antenna inside
But i heard you can buy postmarket antenna for around $5-10

Yes, cheapest and best way would be to use some generic wwan antenna.
They are very small and they can be fixed by double side tape.
You can find them easily on ebay.

You can see the original positions in the link.

I just have received my generic Ericsson F5521gw (USB\VID_0BDB&PID_190D) which is perfectly working in my TPT.

Care to tell us where did you buy it?
is there anyway we can tell its USB\VID_12D1&PID_190D?
Thanks

~30€ on ebay.
It's quiet risky but if there is no HP, Lenovo, Dell logo/number on it I would give it a go.

If its not too much to ask, can you post picture of your f5521gw
The reason I asked is because there is a lot f5521gw on ebay, a pic of if may help narrow it down
thanks

Please find the picture attached.
It's a real picture of my card but I made the IMEI irrecognizable.

That's normal as almost all notebook manufactures are working with whitelists.
They will block any WWAN card that is not listed in the bios.
Generic cards are generally cheaper.
Lenovo F5521gw with FRU is around 70-80€ on ebay!

Looking for one too

Thanks for posting this information Exe557.
I'm in the process of looking for a Ericsson F5521GW card as well.
I take it that you checked the VID & PID in Windows?
Where did you get the list of information about the different VID/PID for the variants?
I asked a seller & he posted the VID&PID as USB\VID_OBDB&PID_190D.
Not sure if this would work but the exterior looks exactly the same as the picture you posted.
Here's the item.

I'm sorry, I have checked the list I have posted but I have wrong VID for all Ericsson cards. Correct list :
Huawei EC226
USB\VID_12D1&PID_1001
Ericsson F5521gw
USB\VID_0BDB&PID_1911 <- Lenovo Card
USB\VID_0BDB&PID_190D <- Generic Card

USB\VID_1199&PID_9013
USB\VID_1199&PID_9018
USB\VID_1199&PID_9019
So your card with USB\VID_OBDB&PID_190D will work.
I have the same one.
The list is extracted from the WWAN Loader.

Were you able to check the WWAN performance of the card you bought?
Is it consistent with the 3/3.5G speeds in your area?
I can't wait!

I just made a quick speedtest at home but coverage is not so good (provider issue not TPT).
Got 6Mbit down and 1,2Mbit up...

That's great!

No 3G on Orange Universal?

Hi, I'm looking for a 2nd hand Universal and so I found a guy selling it for what I find a very good price... but the catch is that he says it won't be able to connect to 3G networks:
these are refurbished and we made sure that phone will work with all networks (except 3G).
What I wanted to ask is: how could this be possible? how would it be able to connect to standard 2G networks and not 3G? would it be a software issue? Would I be able to fix that?
hmm, i dont think its possible that the 3g is broken but the 2g isnt, as afaik they are the same chip. however it is common knowledge that universals wont work with the phone operator '3' (unless you have a very old sim card) o perhaps this is where the confusion is, best bet is to ask the seller.
Hope this was of some help

Thanks.... That's what I thought... Since he is a UK seller he is probabily talking about UK Operators... here in Portugal we don't have problems with using unlocked phones bought from other operators.. even though Vodafone do use newer CompV2 SIM cards (though I still have a old CompV1)

I must have been misinformed, i was under the impression that 3 used different sim-cards and so couldnt be compatable with non-3 phones.

It wasn't indicated in the Product spec page, but its indicated in the Support page . Trust Tmo to leave out important details in their product page lol
My unlocked g2 works on singtel here in sgp
Both 3G and hsdpa
If bands r the same for the uk, should work
Why not get a Desire Z? Pretty much the same handset isn't it..?

[Q] Qualcomm MDM6600, Motorola Xoom 3G (US) and GSM networks

Hi all,
As I was traveling to the US in the next weeks, I was planning the possibility of buying a xoom 3G there as it has not been launched yet in Europe. Then I just realized that the 3G version of the Motorola Xoom is in fact an CDMA only version.
However today I have seen in the iFixit that the Motorola Xoom has the Qualcomm MDM6600 radio chipset. This chipset, which supports HSPA+ (MDM6600 looks like a GSM/UMTS/HSPA+/EV-DO multi-mode processor), is the same as the world phone Motorola Droid Pro.
So, my question is:
- Could we have some hope the US version will allow us to connect to GSM versions in Europe anytime soon?
- Will be able to navigate through GLONASS navigation satellites?
Intriguing enough,
/À
No.
Plus it doesn't hurt to search. This has been touched on numerous time on here.
Thanks for the answer. Actually, I did some search on the forum, but still I fail to see whether the difference will be on the hardware or software, as the radio chipset looks capable.
Part of the issue is that the antennas are tuned for VZ's CDMA frequencies (and modulation, IIRC). It wouldn't work very well on say, 900MHz GSM.
Just because the chipset is capable of GSM theoretically doesn't mean it has the antennas or tuning or SIM slot to be compatible with GSM. The lack of a GSM SIM slot alone shoots down the proposition.

Actually, provided the existing SIM-card reader is wired to a serial port (as opposed to directly to the Mini-PCI port's pins) that part might actually work
(BTW, I will give my firstborn for the 3G-version's schematic. Hook me up, someone!)

From what I gather then LTE SIM and GSM SIM are different sizes.

Just checked- same size. Dunno about connections though.
Why not just wait until April 19th and get the Euro 3G version from Carphone Warehouse? The US version, as standard, will not work in Europe.
1.) euopean software flashed on a vzw xoom
2.) gsm simcard detected and unlocked(pin)
3.) for some reason the rild is falling back to cdma even if it is configured for gsm
radio image?
US Xoom in Europe
Hi GhostOfTheNet,
Do you think If install the Stock MZ601_H.6.1-38-1_Retail_Europe.zip, would it work with the Xoom MZ600 instead of the existing Build HRI39?
If not, Please what have you done so far to get it work?
Thanks in advance.

Will GPS work in EU
Hi,
this is probably a stupid question, but I'd just like a definitive confirmation on this - will I be able to use GPS from a US Motorola Xoom (MZ604) in Europe (specifically the UK)?
Thanks

MZ604 WI-FI to 3G

Hello Folks
I have a Canadian bought Motorola XOOM MZ604 which has a slot for SIM Card, which I tried and doesnt work.
Can I flash any rom to make this 3G? can someone guide me to the appropriate thread
Welcome to xda.. im a canuck as well and have only had my MZ604 for a few weeks.from my understanding our units do not have the components rigged on the motherboard for 3G. Initial us versions when purchased at the start had to return there units months later to motorola for upgrade which took approx a week.I think we are stuck with just our wifi units as they are...Its still a great unit and can be connected to internet via bluetooth tethering as well as just wifi. Old Windows Mobile 6.5 Phones using wmwifirouter 2.0 Works great via bluetooth to connect to the internet... Hope this helps..
again welcome to xda..

Yeah the wifi xooms has a wifi only chip installed, it is physically soldered to the motherboard. Where as the 3g ones had a multi band chip installed then later got a micro pcie card installed for the lte.
You can do it... there is a walk thru but the chip its self is about 200-250$ USD. And a LOT of know how

I don't mean to hijack anyone's thread but along the same lines as the OP, what would happen if one were to swap out the motherboard for the WiFi Xoom with a 3G board? These days a working replacement board costs like $60 on eBay, I was wondering whether it's a possibility because the 3G board comes with the miniPCI 3G card and a set of antenna leads (I think) and the rest of the hardware looks identical.

I'm sure it is possible if you know what you are doing. A person would need to do more than just swap out the motherboard, not to mention, they would have make sure the chip works, if not the chip would cost over $200 to purchase, but why do all that? Just purchase the 3G version the price is fairly cheap.

He can. Or he can cut it himself.
Only thing he needs to be aware of is that modem might need changing for better reception in a different country.
Updates will of course be the UK updates .
