Experience sharing: P6800 Hong Kong version HW with Open Austra Firmware - Galaxy Tab 7.7 General

I write to share the experience with new ICS updates on P6800 (Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 WiFi+3G) Hong Kong HW version.
In short I have to flash the Open Austra's firmware instead of Hong Kong firmware because the latter has face recognition screen unlocking feature missing from Settings, and the SMS doesn't work anymore, even after double-wipe. The SMS issue could be an unique case for my tab with my mobile carrier though, YMMV.
The SMS works again after flashing Open Austra firmware and double-wipe. I could use the face recognition screen unlocking feature again. However, the official bookshelf application (電子書) was not working anymore. I kinda miss that because this reader has book-reading (Text-To-Speech) capability.
Also, I ran into the same issue with WiFi that other posters has raised before, which I couldn't connect to my home WiFi without struggling.
Furthermore, the DroidVNC server doesn't accept keyboard input anymore, even after trying all uinput devices. Fortunately knoxbrder has posted another working VNC server for ICS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1476648
I will update this thread with issues and possible solutions if any.
EDIT:
samuelfeng: (for the replacement of 電子書) You can try "docin open reader" from play market. It does TTS properly for English and Chinese.
chan005 (in another thread):I reloaded to HC stock and then load the new HK ICS. That did the trick for me on wifi. No problem for a week now. Locks onto AP every time and no drop out.
九千.: This trick works for me too. It seems to fix the WiFi un-discoverable and random disconnection problems. Following is how it was done:
(1) Reflashed the stock Honeycomb firmware of Open Austra into a P6800 Hong Kong version,
(2) Performed double-wipe (wipe data and cache clean)
(3) Reflashed it again with ICS of Open Austra firmware,
(4) Performed double-wiped again,
(5) Restore everything back.
However, though it solved the random WiFi disconnection issues, the speed of WiFi is still much worse than that of in HC. So this trick can only be considered as partial solution for the WiFi problem.

Hi HK pal, how did you manage to re-flash 3.2 into a 4.0.4 P6800?
I wanna do this because i disliked 4.0.4
I want to downgrade it without letting $am$ung knowing it, i.e. sth like flash count
Its heard that ODIN can flash official rom w/o rooting, is it true?
Thanks

Yes, use Odin (PC version, v1.85) to flash P6800ZSLA2 and you don't need to have root to do that.

For the vnc server issue, you want to try our newest app, VMLite VNC Server, available here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vmlite.vncserver&hl=en
It uses a different mechanism to handle mouse/keyboard inputs, and works well even on unrooted devices. Keyboard and mouse should be more responsive, too.

I have flashed the Austra version of ICS (from HC, no wipe) about month ago, then last week I flashed it with the HK version (without any wipe).
Now everything works fine, but will have random FC for Splanner(calendar) and when I try to copy the contents from any of the APP (e.g browser, SMS etc,)
Have you guys got such problem?
I just want to fix it rather than 双wipe and flash it again.
cheers.

well as I can see, we are talking about a Hong Kong galaxy tab 7.7 p6800 TGY with stock LA2.
hello, i am about to update mine from stock Hong Kong honeycomb, mine is also a Hong Kong tab LA2, kies asked me to update mine to LP8, which is ics.
I have noticed that people with Hong Kong tabs who did the update first time from stock honeycomb to ics via kies are not experiencing the problems of those who started via odin with Austria firmware, in the worst case, a factory reset solve their problems, somebody confirme this theory?
i really hope some people do a full review about their experience with the new update, well it will be really helpful to do a comparaison to the old honeycomb. exemple
1- battery life on ics in continus web browsing is xx in 1 hour versus 10% on honeycomb?
2- 3g and cell phone coverage is better in ics or worse vs honeycomb?
3- wifi is better or worse than what we get on honeycomb?
a screen capture of battery life will be very helpful
thanks

I flashed with the euro version of ICS ROM at the beginning and then flash directly without wipes with HK version of ICS.
No WIFI issue after that, but the copy paste function will have FC,and the Splanning are having problem which will FC when adding new task. and the performance seems getting slower...
i am now going to give it a wipe and reset then see how it goes.
I can tell the battery life reduced with ICS than HC, but still acceptable.

plus it's dated may 10... fresh from the oven
Problem Regarding upgrading ROM in Acer Liquid
HI there,
I am having problem in upgrading ROM in Acer Liquid.I have downloaded everything from Acer's website but after connecting with the USB;I am having messege that this ROM is "OS file type is Not match, Now stop the whole process." I am toonew for upgrading the ROM in Android device.I have currently installed
Firmware Version 1.6
Basebnd version A1-01.01.04
Kernel version 2.6.29
Build number Acer_Liquid_1.001.05_AAP_CSL
Please anyone help regarding this problem. Thanks in advance.
You need to download the ACER DOWNLOAD TOOL in order to flash the rom, which will help you to flash to different version.

Hi, is this the official ACER ROM?
Does it have Multi-touch? I Was using another 2.1 ROM but found it too slow so went back to the official 1.6. Spoke to ACER ope a couple of weeks ago, they couldn't confirm when 2.1 would be launched.
It is by Acer but not officially put out by Acer.
It is leaked to the public.
It does have multitouch. And I have found it to be pretty stable (been using it for the past 1-2 weeks, randomly froze on me twice. But aside from that it has been good).
Hmmm, OK sounds good. The only problem the last time I rooted to 2.1 was that several apps were missing from the marketplace - Seesmic, Wordpress, Barcode scanner to name three (that I use quite a lot!).
Can anyone using this ROM verify they are available?
I don't understand... what do you mean the apps are missing?
The apps on the market are what they are, if you mean apps actually installed on the device that don't show between market installed app list, it's just because you didn't install those by market, but maybe you installed those by some backup app...
As far as I know you can't back up apps can you?
When I rooted to a custom 2.1 ROM some apps (the ones I mentioned) were missing from the Apps Market. I was told that this was due to issues with custom ROMS.
So if anyone is using the ACER 2.1 ROM, all I want to know is are those Apps available if I flash my Liquid?
Would this ROM work in Singapore? Do I have to setup the connections or anything? flashing this would void the warranty right? is it possible to revert back to android 1. 6 after flashing?

If you flash the 2.1 ROM, and then Malez Recovery, there's an feature in malezRecoery that enables market, I haven't used it myself, but I think it's what you need.

Thanks. Will look for that.
I'm in Taiwan, I have update this rom, everything is fine just one question, battery power
consumed to fast (less than 30 hours), and I have been try the other cooker's rom like Xian 0.7 version, Vach1.0.1, and Batista 1.8.3 . so far last one is on duty and I like it. but I can't install Chinese handwriting app, that's all no other bugs.
by the way, if you want to back to 1.6 version use Acer tools, it can ba back.

Barcode Scanner is baked into the new ROM. Seesmic for Twitter and Wordpress do show up in the Android Market for me. I do know that at some times, certain apps will not be offered to devices with unofficial ROMS or with OS versions more recent than recognized for the device you have. I actually called DataViz on this and several of their apps can download the trial/demo but you can not buy the license.

Flashed the ROM at the weekend and have all the apps I wanted, thanks for coming back though.
Notice that it can be a little sluggish if you have too many apps open at once, well I had 10 open

I soon have an Acer Liquid (NOT Acer Liquid E).
Can I flash this Firmware with Acer Downloader onto the standard "Acer Liquid" - or is this only for the "Acer Liquid E" ?
Can anyone tell some experiences in battery runtime...?

[Q] Straight Talk issues after ICS update

Hi all,
So, I finally got the ICS update via Kies (not OTA, through USB) 3 days ago. Since then, my internet speeds seem to have tanked I did the factory reset twice, and tried both APN settings, the one that came with ST and the one that has been posted here (one for internet and one for MMS). Prior to the update, I could easily get 4-6mb down and 1.5mb up; now it's hardly 1-2mb down and not even 1mb up. Did I screw something up?
BTW, I'm running stock, unrooted, ICS 4.0.3
Baseboard: N7000XXLPT
Kernel: 3.0.15-N7000XXLQ2-CL605927
Build: IML74K.XXLQ2
Has anybody else experienced the same thing? Any help is greatly appreciated!
Help a noob, please
Hi, I'm a beginner also.
Does anyone know if I have to revert back to stock GB before I connect to Kies for the ICS update?
Most importantly, can I revert back to Stock GB if I don't like this update? (I would PC Odin Stock GB ROM, zergrush for root).
Sorry I couldn't answer the question above, but I would gladly try out the ICS update if my above two questions can be answered. I just want to be safe before I proceeded.
I was on ICS for a brief moment and reverted because of well documented bricking risk. My guess is your apn's where off a bit, or maybe the modem needs to be switched.
But thats the least of your worries. Because you did a reset you may have damaged your eMMC .... that's the bug.
For now you need to get a safe kernel on there.
1. root your ICS
2. mobile odin a SAFE kernel
DO NOT WIPE AGAIN until....

Wow, I'm really shocked. This is ICS Update over Kies from Samsung. Not a leaked ICS ROM he got from a friend.
I am in disbelief that Samsung would allow us to receive this bug over their official Kies method.
Is this verified? The ICS that Samsung gives over Kies also has the eMMC bug?
---
Sorry, just did a quick XDA search, I couldn't find a definitive answer that the ICS Update via Kies from Samsung has eMMC bug. But they're all saying STOCK or Custom ICS ROM, DO NOT WIPE OR FACTORY RESET.
---
Just did a more extensive eMMC search. From this post I found this note.
All ICS official releases for the Samsung Galaxy Note (GT-N7000) as of late May 2012 - This includes XXLPY, ZSLPF, and DXLP9, and future kernels should be assumed affected until further notice.
To my understanding is, Samsung is shipping out updates that will brick your phone. WTF?!?!
---
Find another post regarding DO NOT WIPE
Please do NOT use Wipe Data/Factory Reset. It is the main difference between first and 2nd round of testing and is the current suspect
My newest issue seems to be unable to send a text message now! WTF? I would have dealt with slower data until I figured out how to go about fixing my damaged eMMC (if it's damaged, that is). Good grief!

Should I update to Android 4.0 ?

I have the international Galaxy Note.
It was rooted.
Now I just received the update to Android 4.0 (ICS) and it has already download the updated OS. However, after the download, it ask whether I want to proceed with the installation. I have NOT install it yet because I was not sure if I should do it.
Then I came here to check out the review of how people like the ICS and found out that some people advise not to do it because of some type of bug.
Since I download the ICS OTA (over the air), is it safe to go ahead and install it or the problem is due to people install it with Kies instead of OTA.
What is your advice and what should I do at this moment? I don't mind reformat the whole phone and start from scratch. I just want it to be a safe update that would provide good battery life and performance.
Thanks.

Gingerbread is better than ics regarding battery life. All of us here running on ics are on the edge, if you dont do it right, well hello superbrick bug. Its up to you.
^ agree.
But in ics, the firmware itself is safe if you dont disturb the recovery. people said factory reset in Settings is safe. But, i know your phone is still new, dont risk yourself..
on the other side, i used DXLP9 version of ics and my battery is fine..
From what I read from you, you don't seem to be the tipical geek who is desperate to have the last ROM / Kernel / MOD. You seem happy with your phone. A smart advice in that case would be "don't update it". A few points to consider:
- Yes, you are exposed to the danger of a brick, but only if you start to TOUCH things you are unlikely to do (from what I assume of you). So that risk, in your case, seems non-existant. The risk is, particulary, if you WIPE or FLASH from RECOVERY. ¿Have you ever entered recovery mode?
- If you update to ICS, there will be things you will like, and things you won't. I have not seen battery issues. Perfomance? To be honest, Gingerbread was a little better.
- You will be able to delete a single notification instead ALL of them, just by draging it.
- But on the other hand, with ICS, the USB support is a hell of a lot better. I plug USB flash drives on my cell, with my USB On-The-Go adapter (do not forget the Galaxy Note has an usb HOST port, very similar to a PC). But sometimes, it failed to recognize them. With ICS that problem is gone, and every drive I plug in something, i can use it with no problems. Even USB keyboard and mice! (that's an interesting option). Previously, it would recognized those devices, but not support them.
There are more differents, but these were the most relevant ones. So, there are some PROs and CONs. Eventually, with time, you'll probably end up needing ICS to be able to use a few apps. Google Chrome, for example, requires ICS.
The choice is yours. I would do it, but it is difficult for me trying to be impartial.
I'm on ICS XXLPY and it works fine, battery running almost the same as on gingerbread (maybe even better)
Take your time to think about it, and check more info on forum, to tell you the truth I did it and was lucky cause didn't know you can brick the phone...
Wish you luck with that...
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
if you still want to update then use the odin method that is safe and reliable
Since you're already on a rooted gingerbread stock rom, I suggest you go flash the rom in the following link to get a great ice cream sandwich experience
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662802
I have updated both via OTA and Kies in both cases had lots of problems, however after Flashing it with PC Odin everything is working fine, and yes battery is much worst than GB, I have flashed many different kernels finally settling down to Goku but looks like on ICS battery has no remedy.
ICS works fine until u brick the phone..
Wait for the fix..
I think that ICS is amazing, I'm getting battery life almost as gingerbread.
Here is some screenshot to backup it.
I'm on RocketROM v7 - ICS - LQ3 with CF-Root LQ2 Kernel

M.

Forums always give you horror stories, complaints, etc.
But... I'm on stock GB and have been wondering the same thing; is ICS worth it?
My GB device has good battery and performance. Maybe not the shiny new bells and whistles... but is the trade off / risk worth it?
EDIT: I was a Dell Streak user and familiar with Custom ROMS. I flashed them all. But... they were not perfect. At least my Note on GB is uber stable.

Updated about 4 weeks ago to 4.03 with Kies with NO problems what so ever, battery life is like it was before...100% top, still get my average of 2-3 days usage depending on what I´m doing:fingers-crossed:,same as before I updated. The only thing annoys me a bit is a few apps that die out on me now and then but I can live with that, all in all depending on what launcher I´m using and what I´m doing I don´t really notice a big difference.

WiFi problem under ICS fixed

The last update (it came over the air) for the Galaxy Tab 7.7 fixed the problem with disconnections and bad or no receptions of access points. It seems that the new firmware update to P6800DXLP8_P6800OLBLP7_THL.zip (from sammobile) cured the bug. I can confirm that at least two tablets (mine and the one of a friend) are working perfectly now.
The update showed up on Monday morning in Thailand. For version information see picture.

you dont need to flash the firmware... just the modem.bin will do... download the files, unzip it and use odin to flash. put the files on phone section.

I flash the modem.bin file that you post. put the files on phone, on Odin and start the flash.
Rebot system and the wifi problem persist.

I used the plain Singapore version (no carriers) and the wifi works fine.
But it does not seem to support Portuguese.
Only Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Malaysia, various type of English, and four languages that I can't read (one is, I think, Vietnamese).
Ernst does this mean for the CM10 based roms? Do we get the long sought after drivers there developers were talking about? or do we have to downgrade to ICS to use this ?

Did any body experience issues that MicroSD card not reliable on this build. I am using an Sandisk 32GB MicroSd card, I had used it with the P6800 for about a month, never noticed any issue before. However, after the last update (which fixed the WIFI issue and made the device much more reliable), I suddenly start to experience issue with the MicroSD card, it fails randomly when copying large files or large number of files. I first thought it's the card issue, but the card works perfectly fine on my blackberry or card reader. And I didn't noticed this issue on the tablet before.
Is it possible to just SDCard driver from the previous version?

What do you mean the date suggest the same, this date was almost one day prior to the German 4.1.2 release date .

I did check the release date of Russian 4.1.1 rom on Samfirmware and it is 12/28/12 so there is some error on the site. Also most of countries received 4.1.1 well after germany received 4.1.2 and also the release dates are well after that of german rom.
I went to same wifi and did a cross check the rom builds are also the same and hence I am sure that it is 4.1.1

There are ICS ROMs with later build dates than JB ROMs so Samir's question is valid. Same thing with 4.1.1 vs. 4.1.2. Personally, I never run ROM's from Russia (and Eastern Europe) or Asia because of changes Samsung makes unique to those regions. Others of course can do as they wish. It's not like the 4.1.2 ROM a lot of us are currently using is broken.

Totally agree with your statement, what i mean is why do we jump into conclusions that what is posted is for sure a 4.1.1 & not 4.1.2 while neither me nor Samir has downloaded or flashed it.
The logic says that we have to try first and give the verdict, on the other hand this russian guy who is running this rom have sent me a screen shot for this 4.1.2 , above that what`s the big deal of having another leaked Italian & Russian 4.1.2 roms ?
My reply was just to wait & check.

I'd load the Italian ROM becuase it's EU multi-CSC. Samfirmware has it listed as 4.1.1 while Samsung-Updates has it showing as 4.1.2. Has anyone tried it out yet to see which one's correct?

Yeah, that`s the Italian rom what i am trying to download but unfortunately have a problem with my provider tonight download speed is so slow.
I have just updated to LL3 ITV (the Italian one) and in the system info page under settings it says 4.1.2.
One-finger expandable notifications, though, don't seem to work so it may just be a mistake like we have already seen in the past.
This issue aside, the ROM seems to work perfectly and it solved the only problem I had with LJ9 which I have been running since I bought the tablet 2 months ago: the keyboard lag.
Very welcome changes are also more MultiWindow apps (and among them Youtube finally!), the return of the S-Note widget which lets you display a note on the home screen and some other minor features which can be enabled under settings.
Haven't noticed anything else for the moment but have almost literally only just updated.
BTW, I usually do full wipes and a clean install but out of sheer lack of time I have updated through Mobile Odin Pro (and have kept root). Everything runs beautifully but, again, apart from the annoying keyboard lag I really didn't have any problem before too.
What a fantastic tablet.
P.S. Just flashed through Mobile Odin Pro the CWM 6.0.2.3 (the touch version) to complete the update. All good and very happy about how easy, fast and successful everything went.
UPDATE: Polaris was also updated (the update was previously shown as available in Samsung Apps but attempting to actually updating it resulted in Polaris FC'ing) and now the system OTA update check works even if the system is rooted and has a non-original recovery. So more positive news, no negatives so far.
UPDATE 2: a problem in the gallery displaying high-res pics has been fixed too. The first and only negative found is that before swiping along the sides, in the stock browser, changed the zoom setting, no longer. Although it was inconvenient while scrolling the page (since sometimes, when you were scrolling too close to the edge of the sides of the screen, it would zoom instead of scroll) it was very handy while using the tablet with a mouse.
It's a pretty minor update to the earlier 4.1.2 ROMs. The only visual changes I noticed are the additional apps in stock multiview (they are the same as the N2 now) and I lost the ability to add news/social updates to the lock screen in the earlier 4.1.2 ROM and their back in this one. When it rebooted after the update it only showed 3 apps were being updated where the 4.1.1>4.1.2 update showed over 90.
Ok I had used the German Rom and I could not get one finger notification to work in either that also so dont worry if system show its 4.1.2 then it should be that
Apologies to isherif

Nothing to apologize for , we are here as a community trying to provide & post our findings and choose what ever could be beneficial to others .
Can anyone put up a mirror for the Italian one? I always have problems with hot file disconnecting right at the end
