Should I update to Android 4.0 ? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

I have the international Galaxy Note.
It was rooted.
Now I just received the update to Android 4.0 (ICS) and it has already download the updated OS. However, after the download, it ask whether I want to proceed with the installation. I have NOT install it yet because I was not sure if I should do it.
Then I came here to check out the review of how people like the ICS and found out that some people advise not to do it because of some type of bug.
Since I download the ICS OTA (over the air), is it safe to go ahead and install it or the problem is due to people install it with Kies instead of OTA.
What is your advice and what should I do at this moment? I don't mind reformat the whole phone and start from scratch. I just want it to be a safe update that would provide good battery life and performance.
Thanks.

Gingerbread is better than ics regarding battery life. All of us here running on ics are on the edge, if you dont do it right, well hello superbrick bug. Its up to you.

^ agree.
But in ics, the firmware itself is safe if you dont disturb the recovery. people said factory reset in Settings is safe. But, i know your phone is still new, dont risk yourself..
on the other side, i used DXLP9 version of ics and my battery is fine..

From what I read from you, you don't seem to be the tipical geek who is desperate to have the last ROM / Kernel / MOD. You seem happy with your phone. A smart advice in that case would be "don't update it". A few points to consider:
- Yes, you are exposed to the danger of a brick, but only if you start to TOUCH things you are unlikely to do (from what I assume of you). So that risk, in your case, seems non-existant. The risk is, particulary, if you WIPE or FLASH from RECOVERY. ¿Have you ever entered recovery mode?
- If you update to ICS, there will be things you will like, and things you won't. I have not seen battery issues. Perfomance? To be honest, Gingerbread was a little better.
- You will be able to delete a single notification instead ALL of them, just by draging it.
- But on the other hand, with ICS, the USB support is a hell of a lot better. I plug USB flash drives on my cell, with my USB On-The-Go adapter (do not forget the Galaxy Note has an usb HOST port, very similar to a PC). But sometimes, it failed to recognize them. With ICS that problem is gone, and every drive I plug in something, i can use it with no problems. Even USB keyboard and mice! (that's an interesting option). Previously, it would recognized those devices, but not support them.
There are more differents, but these were the most relevant ones. So, there are some PROs and CONs. Eventually, with time, you'll probably end up needing ICS to be able to use a few apps. Google Chrome, for example, requires ICS.
The choice is yours. I would do it, but it is difficult for me trying to be impartial.

I'm on ICS XXLPY and it works fine, battery running almost the same as on gingerbread (maybe even better)
Take your time to think about it, and check more info on forum, to tell you the truth I did it and was lucky cause didn't know you can brick the phone...
Wish you luck with that...

if you still want to update then use the odin method that is safe and reliable

Since you're already on a rooted gingerbread stock rom, I suggest you go flash the rom in the following link to get a great ice cream sandwich experience
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662802

I have updated both via OTA and Kies in both cases had lots of problems, however after Flashing it with PC Odin everything is working fine, and yes battery is much worst than GB, I have flashed many different kernels finally settling down to Goku but looks like on ICS battery has no remedy.

ICS works fine until u brick the phone..
Wait for the fix..

I think that ICS is amazing, I'm getting battery life almost as gingerbread.
Here is some screenshot to backup it.
I'm on RocketROM v7 - ICS - LQ3 with CF-Root LQ2 Kernel
Best regards,
M.

Forums always give you horror stories, complaints, etc.
But... I'm on stock GB and have been wondering the same thing; is ICS worth it?
My GB device has good battery and performance. Maybe not the shiny new bells and whistles... but is the trade off / risk worth it?
EDIT: I was a Dell Streak user and familiar with Custom ROMS. I flashed them all. But... they were not perfect. At least my Note on GB is uber stable.

You're right when using a touchwiz rom but use a cyanogenmod/aosp based rom and you'll notice a BIG difference. If that doesn't impress you then go a step further and flash the paranoid android rom and as previously mentioned, "you'll be blown away!"

Go for Paranoid! Don't stay on stock anymore

Updated about 4 weeks ago to 4.03 with Kies with NO problems what so ever, battery life is like it was before...100% top, still get my average of 2-3 days usage depending on what I´m doing:fingers-crossed:,same as before I updated. The only thing annoys me a bit is a few apps that die out on me now and then but I can live with that, all in all depending on what launcher I´m using and what I´m doing I don´t really notice a big difference.

Want TW4 and GB? Try Asgard

No flame please
Well, i just noticed TODAY that EDT has a ROM named Asgard, hiding in their forums sneaky devs...
It's amazing, truly is, it just got updated, and i'm downloading it right now... so... yeah and its 214MB so yeah its a big download but definately worth it!
http://edtdev.com/forum/topic/122-r...orking-audio-routing-and-custom-kernel532011/
go check it out!
It has most of the things that the GB roms here don't have.
It has the fixed MIC thing no using that headset toggle app..
The rainbow problem has been fixed, but you have to let go of your camera and video playback, but if you want rainbow instead of losing the other 2, there's kernel's to do just that!
It's amazing what these devs can do!
I'm just sharing
Try it out!
It flashed no problems, just odin and flash, needs to be on RFS to flash, so don't flash it on EXT4 and i just converted to EXT4 on this and its even better!
TW4 is really amazing and i'm happy with what Samsung has done!
Here are some pictures from THE OFFICIAL THREAD.

Just do what i did and not face any problems...
ODIN.
ODIN and flash like any other rom...
The ROM just needs for you to be on RFS, so im guessing if you turn off your VOODOO from any rom, that it would work, since its RFS, but w/e ODIN is quicker and faster!
I tried flashing this and ended up with a bootloop and a wiped sd card.
I'm Odining to stock now and am going to attempt to reflash.
They are not sneaky haha. This has been widely twittered and talked about if you follow the devs. They just don't wanna release it on XDA yet as it isn't fully bug-free and people here love complaining about bugs. That being the case it IS a public release on the forum as of yesterday was it so feel free to try it.
PS: Did I note that the kernel is also from cmenard and beside all the usual (Voodoos, tweaks, etc) it also supports up to 1.42Ghz overclock on Gingerbread? Yes...nothing on XDA has that yet
So I've actually never had to odin my phone. after I got root I've just flashed probly 15 different roms from recovery. So lemme get this straight so I know I wont be messing anything up. I use all the correct files and coding back to stock after stock I flash this rom through odin? Now with the rfs. I disabled voodoo on my current rom so I should be fine right? Im not on ext4 anymore? And I read the odin guide for noobs do I just follow its instructions just like I was installing any other rom? Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

At first, hell no.
Recondition, i did it once, and it lasted for 14 hours, and i use moderate-heavy.
Experiences may differ
i flashed this not too long ago and my touchwiz launcher keeps force closing. Do i have to odin back and do a re-flash? Also some widgets show up as "problem loading widget"
if you read the original thread over at EDT, there's fixes, read the last 2-4 pages.
I hate to be the thread crapper but I'll pass on this, as with all current Gingerbread ROM's for the Vibrant.
No offense to the Devs, I like their Trigger ROM a great deal, just need the GPS in the phone far too often to flash a ROM in which it's broken.
The very first GB ROM in which the GPS is confirmed to work is without a doubt going to get flashed to my Vibrant.

It's certainly not the snappiest ROM I've ever used but I think it runs better than TW3 ever did on my phone. I'm in love with the new widget/page management UI they have going. It makes the standard Android UI look terribly dated and less useful by comparison.
Also, battery life has been better than MIUI or CM7 for me. After being unplugged for 4 hours, I'm at 87% with medium use. That's pretty good in my book.
Best Gingerbread rom and its brand new so give this a month an it will be simply amazing an its not laggy as some people say it has its moments but what rom doesn't

Now available on rommanager and the Biffmod home page http://ibmirror.us/biffmod
Biffmod for cappy is here. I think you'll enjoy it.
The goal here was to create a stock 2.3.5 feel for the cappy , preserve the customization options of Cyanogenmod, and add the features I felt were missing.

v1.3- Initial release and port from samsung vibrant, relatively untested
Seems interesting...i'll try it out tonight.
As shall I... I doubt many people here will get the KingKlick reference lol (I'm from way back... G1 days). Great to see you deving for Captivate, biff.
you guys are officially testers. Please let me know any bugs or issues you have. Cappy and Vibrant are basically the same so i think i pulled it off proper, but since i don't have the device, its not possible to know. Once you all confirm its as stable as it should in theory be, i'll push to rom manager and start doing biweekly updates.
Sounds good. I won't be using Glitch though, I'm currently testing a kernel of my own (in my sig). TK-Glitch was the dev of Gitch kernel btw
I will give a try also this night!

That's what the OP says. If you have issues, then they're most likely caused by your GB bootloaders. Give it a try, worst that can happen is that you have to go stock. (disclaimer: worse can happen if you really, really, really screw up and I'm not responsible)
+1. I have jvp installed. With gb bootloaders. Do I have to-
1. flash to stock eclair
2. flash to stock gb
3. just wipe and flash?

Yes you can !
You can install the "original version" of this ROM from your recovery if (and only if) you root your tablet and install Amon-Ra recovery on it.

Wise decision, alexmd
But this Rom is the one that will be sent by OTA, I believe... most probably before April. Some people working for Acer have announced that the OTA must begin in a very short time now.

THIS LEAKED ROM IS FOR DEVELOPMENT
•Give the developers time to take this leaked ROM and make a stable release.
•Currently there is no version that keeps full Root and Recovery. A500 tablets will bootloop flashing the CWM version.
•A501 users can flash the CWM version but there is no 3G.
•A500 users can flash the stock ROM, but there is no Root and no way to install Recovery. Going back to 3.2.1 is not verified.
PATIENCE PLEASE, while this is being worked on.
I am willing to bet within a week or so we will start seeing ICS Roms that can be flashed with either Acer Recovery, CWM or RA.

This is not the same rom that will come thru OTA.. Acer on there website has said the acer a500 WILL Receive the same Added app updates the new Acer lock screen as well as the Acer ring. This leaked rom has none of them. This is the reason people are saying that the leaked rom is a Alpha build. and will Likely have issues and compatibility issues
I don't understand what you mean, Renee
There is a new lock screen ring (a bit modified) on this leak rom.
Anyway, you can be right but, for me, there is no need to change anything on this Rom. .. The only thing to change now to be close to perfection, is these two crappy microphones...

I believe she is talking about the "acer ring", which is some overlay that appears when you put 5 fingers on the screen in a ring shape.
Sent from my tomato filled Evo
There should be a ring lock screen that has the ability to run some apps without unlocking. by draging it to that app.. also a more complex one built into the UI
as well as some new acer apps that nobody has mentioned.. If you go to acer.com and find there latest news it talks about these things..
but i could be wrong. Im still waiting a few more days to see what comes about this boot loader unlock commands now available..

i know. but i don't need it. I'm aware some people might, but having no root doesn't mean its not stable. Ive seen a bunch of posts where people keep saying its for developers only and not stable. I'm just trying to say that its super stable. IF you don't need root, just flash the stock one. It far surpasses any custom 3.2 roms out there. even if i never get another update, i'll be happy.

[Q] Straight Talk issues after ICS update

Hi all,
So, I finally got the ICS update via Kies (not OTA, through USB) 3 days ago. Since then, my internet speeds seem to have tanked I did the factory reset twice, and tried both APN settings, the one that came with ST and the one that has been posted here (one for internet and one for MMS). Prior to the update, I could easily get 4-6mb down and 1.5mb up; now it's hardly 1-2mb down and not even 1mb up. Did I screw something up?
BTW, I'm running stock, unrooted, ICS 4.0.3
Baseboard: N7000XXLPT
Kernel: 3.0.15-N7000XXLQ2-CL605927
Build: IML74K.XXLQ2
Has anybody else experienced the same thing? Any help is greatly appreciated!
Help a noob, please
Hi, I'm a beginner also.
Does anyone know if I have to revert back to stock GB before I connect to Kies for the ICS update?
Most importantly, can I revert back to Stock GB if I don't like this update? (I would PC Odin Stock GB ROM, zergrush for root).
Sorry I couldn't answer the question above, but I would gladly try out the ICS update if my above two questions can be answered. I just want to be safe before I proceeded.
I was on ICS for a brief moment and reverted because of well documented bricking risk. My guess is your apn's where off a bit, or maybe the modem needs to be switched.
But thats the least of your worries. Because you did a reset you may have damaged your eMMC .... that's the bug.
For now you need to get a safe kernel on there.
1. root your ICS
2. mobile odin a SAFE kernel
DO NOT WIPE AGAIN until....

Thank you, akenis. I've never done the rooting b4, but I guess it's a first for everything! What's a safe kernel?

Franco r4 and above. Speedmod as well. The cm9 based ones are safe, but won't work with your version of ICS.
+ 1 for speedmod

I had sane problem. What I did was reset it. Under apn settings, press options button on the phone and choose reset to default.
Worked a dream after that

ICS from Samsung Kies also has eMMC bug?

Wow, I'm really shocked. This is ICS Update over Kies from Samsung. Not a leaked ICS ROM he got from a friend.
I am in disbelief that Samsung would allow us to receive this bug over their official Kies method.
Is this verified? The ICS that Samsung gives over Kies also has the eMMC bug?
---
Sorry, just did a quick XDA search, I couldn't find a definitive answer that the ICS Update via Kies from Samsung has eMMC bug. But they're all saying STOCK or Custom ICS ROM, DO NOT WIPE OR FACTORY RESET.
---
Just did a more extensive eMMC search. From this post I found this note.
All ICS official releases for the Samsung Galaxy Note (GT-N7000) as of late May 2012 - This includes XXLPY, ZSLPF, and DXLP9, and future kernels should be assumed affected until further notice.
To my understanding is, Samsung is shipping out updates that will brick your phone. WTF?!?!
---
Find another post regarding DO NOT WIPE
Please do NOT use Wipe Data/Factory Reset. It is the main difference between first and 2nd round of testing and is the current suspect
My newest issue seems to be unable to send a text message now! WTF? I would have dealt with slower data until I figured out how to go about fixing my damaged eMMC (if it's damaged, that is). Good grief!

Android 4.0.4: Announce it aloud

Whether eMMc bug could be invoked in the new Android 4.0.4. If the answer is either : yes or no : The fact shall be announced loud and clear. It is also strange that some experts? and even samsung saying no such bug exists, even offerng 100$ if proved (read in general section post).Users shall sigh in relief, if the bug is eliminated.
For that 100$ offer, moderatoe have to post this

Keep your personal opinions to yourself, dont believe in the brick bug, fine. But its here, so do not potentially put other users devices at risk by spouting such rubbish!

There is also discussion thread about emmc brick bug solution is there in general, so no meaning to waste time and space here.
In a nutshell no one knows yet at this point.

I don't think the application by chainfire checks whether the kernel has the bug. It checks if your eMMC chip is known to have the bug. Someone more knowledgeable correct me if I'm wrong.
The app only checks whether your processor chip or whatever is known to brick devices during a factory reset/data wipe, which has always been a problem even in Gingerbread days. It is a hardware fault, but triggered by certain kernels. If Samsung were to edit/change the kernel, then it would be fine.
Here is evidence new.ROM having brick bug

As I understand the defect is in the firmware of the affected processors (not the firmware of the phone). The ICS Kernel up to 4.03 trigger the bug in the processor firmware on wiping data in CWM Recovery. So you clearly right, that the GOTBRICKBUG from Chainfire can not show if a new phone firmware/Kernel will make problems, it can only show if your phone has an affected type of processor.
if 4.04 is save is still under discussion. Maybe someone in China/ Singapore knows more, where it´s released first.

what a pitty
thank´s Dr. Ketan! :good:
I was about thinking to try the new 4.04 German version.
What a pitty, can´t believe what the guys at Samsung are doing. How can they release a new firmware and don´t correct this well known brick bug?!?
Well, so much for my hope of a fix. Looks like I won't bother updating from 4.0.3 and, if anything, flash another kernel on.
Samsung must pull their finger out & sort out this problem quickly. The Note 2 is probably going to be released in August. Owners are not going to upgrade if this is the sort of treatment they get.
It wont.stop here

Ohhkeyyy...so...stupid question, probably...
I want to give my dad my Note and he asked that I return it to stock. I'm running Cyanogen Mod 9 right now, latest Nightly.
I'm going to revert with PC Odin to some old stock, not-rooted GB version, like KKA and then let Kies update it to the latest version available for my area.
Does the emmc bug also imply that my dad can't do factory resets either (I imagine so, since they involve a full-wipe...).
I know this is a bit of a lame question, but since using Cyanogen I've stayed away from the whole Samsung ICS mess and haven't really looked into it.
Yes even on full stock ics updated with odin/kies/ota will have emmc brick bug. But if you dont use wipe/reset then it hav no problem. Better keep on latwst GB ROM if you want reset function usable.

Thanks for the quick reply Dr. Ketan. I...can't really recall how many times you've helped me with my Note since I got it...
Wow...bummer. You'd think Samsung would fix such a FORKIN MAJOR bug in their devices after...how many months since ICS is out? Aren't...they the least bit ashamed that CM did a better job than them in a shorter time-span and with lesser resources? (obviously they're not a billion-dollar winning phone and software making company)
