Audio and Data issues after firmware upgrade - Galaxy S II General

Not sure what numbers I should give you so Im going to give you everything.
Current firmware version : PDA:LPD / PHONE:LPB / CSC:LPD (TMU)
Model number : GT-I9100
Android version : 4.0.3
Baseband version : I9100BVLPB
Kernel version : [email protected]#3
Build number : IM74K.BVLPD
The phone is a UK SGS II, has not been rooted. It is running the official T-Mobile ICS Rom.
A couple of days ago I noticed an intermittent but significant loss of data. I could be in the same place for hours and it would happen, I could be on the move and it would happen. I decided to use Samsung Kies to see of there was a firmware upgrade and would reset the phone. This was done yesterday.
Today I have had lots of issues. Data again will come and go at will, the data icon in the taskbar will disappear intermittently. I have also lost SOME audio. By some I mean the following:
No audio from media via the speaker, either stored on the phone or over the internet. Tried BBC iPlayer, Youtube, Samsung Music Hub. Audio on the phone played through headphones was fine.
Ringtones work fine, but when I answer a call there is nothing from the earpiece. Switch to speaker and I can hear the caller.
Notification tones seem to be working fine.
No keypad tones from phone screen. I have checked to make sure that keypad tones is activated.
No 'system sounds'.
I have been into the menu for volumes (Menu, Settings, Sound, Volumes) and:
if I move the media slider I hear nothing (though I do get the 'harmful' warning when the slider is pushed all the way to the right
if I move the Ringtone Slider I can hear the ringtone playing back in relation to the slider position
if I move the Notification slider I can hear the notification tone playing back in relation to the slider position
if I move the System slider I hear nothing at all
The odd thing is that earlier in the day it was working, then part way through the afternoon I got nothing.
I have spoken to T-Mobile who were less than useless. First of all they said that T-Mobile did not recommend upgrading from Gingerbread to ICS, this is despite the rom in the phone being the official T-Mobile branded ICS rom that they released and I upgraded to through Samsung Kies. Their only answer was to take it back to the shop and they would send it away to be downgraded back to Gingerbread.
Is this likely to solve the problem? I am sceptical. The phone has been running fine on ICS for maybe a month, or since the official ICS rom was released anyway, its only in the past couple of days that I have had a problem.
I cant see it being a hardware issue as the speaker is obviously working for me to hear ringtones and be able to hold a phone call on speakerphone (though that doesnt rule out a hardware issue with the earpiece). I was originally thinking more a software conflict somewhere, so thats why I decided to try a reset and firmware upgrade. I have run it with just a couple of apps from Google Play, Facebook and Tunein Radio to be precise and it still had the same issues, and then tried it without installing anything from Google Play, just transferring a single music file from my PC to the phone and that didnt work either. The track played, but there was no audio to hear via the speaker. If I connect headphones to the 3.5mm socket I can hear the audio perfectly fine.
Im hoping someone has some input on this before I go to the store with the phone tomorrow. Has anyone experienced similar issues?
Cheers in advance

Ive been looking a bit further into this and Im wondering if the headphone socket may be to blame?
Ive had a couple of people take a look at the headphone socket, and the general consensus is that it doesnt look right. One thinks that maybe a pin is bent and the bottom of the socket just looks 'wrong'. Thoughts?

Sounds stop working after a while

I recently put Black Majick on to my Hermes. From then it started exhibiting a strange problem.
Bascially no sounds are played. For example, there is no sound played on incoming calls, new sms or email messages, when dialing a number etc. I can use the phone as such (the speaker works during a call).
A Soft reset will get the sounds working again but after a while they stop. This is within a couple of hours. I'm yet to work out what is causing it.
I've tried rolling back to older versions of Black, including 3.01 which used to work just fine, but the problem persists.
I've hard reset and then not installed anything else. The only changes are to setup push email. But it still stuffs up after a while.
It's obviously not a hardware fault. If it is software I am at a loss as to what though as different firmware + hardresets should eliminate that. I've tried removing the SD card in case that was some how playing a role. The only thing I can think of is that there is something in EXTROM causing the issue? Doesn't make sense to me though.
Searching around the place has revealed that some people have similar issues but there doesn't seem to be a fix. I've started this new thread in the hope that someone that knows the answer will see it and assist.
Loud sounds have dropped away
Mine sounds like it might be hardware, as the phone only occasionally rings (when I test (ringer ) it just vibrates), I can hear phone calls. I'd like to know where to check software in case there's some switch that I've accidentally tweaked. I have dropped the phone once or twice but not clearly lost sounds immediately after.
It still plays A2DP Bluetooth stereo no problem (that's why I upgraded away from Orange's WM5)

Strange sound issues (this is a tough problem!)

Hey all, im glad this site is up its been great finding what i can really do with my wizard!
here is he issue im having. the wizard has 3 different speakers and 1 microphone. 2 side speakers (used to play music, or speaker phone) and the 1 main speaker (used for hearing calls). none of the 3 work when im making calls, listening to music, alarms, or any of the "screen click" sounds and the microphone doesnt work on phone calls or note recordings. however, the one time the speakers do work is when i have an incoming call, i tried listening to see which speaker its coming out of and it sounds like all 3. the headphone jack still works so thats what ive been using. pressing the speaker phone button while on a call (that i cant hear) doesnt do anything, the UI doesnt show any change or switch to indicate its changed to speaker phone and the "speaker on" button doesnt change to "speaker off" like it used to.
originally i thought this was a ROM issue, i was using the manufacturer's ROM (cingular 8125, unlocked for tmobile service) so i followed the lovely tutorial and switched my phone over to the t-mobile 2.26 ROM. this had no effect, so I then upgraded to XDA's WM6 ROM and while i love this new ROM it still did not fix my sound issue.
im stumped, any help anyone can offer would be great. I wanted to post here before i crack it open to look at all the insides.
same problem!
I'm having the exact same problem! I just noticed the problem recently, when my phones alarm didn't sound. I'm running a custom cooked rom from mattk_r 318 kitchen, but I don't think the rom is the problem, as i am indeed still hearing sound from the head phone jack. I don't think the internal speakers are broken, as when a call comes, the phone rings, and the sound come out from the speaks as mentioned above!
Help!
dropped?
have you ever dropped your phone?
I have dropped mine a couple times and thats the only cause I can come up with. But this never seemed to be a problem until recently.
no major drop recently.
i havent really dropped it recently at all.and for some reason i dont think the hardware is the problem, because i tryed voice recorder, and it records my voice and i can play it
back through the headset.so that confirms that the mic and both spealers work (rings
when incoming call). i really dont want this to be the downfall for my wizard! is there
any key registry entrys for sound maybe that we could have a look at? btw my wizards a G4 if thats makes any difference.
please help!!
mine is a g3, if it were a software issue then reflashing should have solved it. right? i dont know enough about the internal workings of the wizard to know what a flash actually does.
?
Anyone have any ideas on what I can try?
Well, a flash is an OS upgrade/downgrade. It contains drivers, programs, registry settings, things of that sort. Sounds like your problem is hardware related, nothing to do with the OS itself.
I assume the warranty on that baby has already expired, so you're pretty much on your own.
Two options come to mind:
1. The obvious... buy another Wizard
2. The not so obvious... buy another Wizard with a broken screen and take all of its guts out and put them in yours.
A third option also exists... (ther's always a third way)
Mind you, this is for INFORMATION PURPOSES ONLY! In no way do I condone the below mentioned method.
Get a new line of service with Cingular and buy the Wizard to use with it. Exchange their boards, swap the IMEIs using the Wizard Service Tool utility found on these boards, cancel the line of service and return the "new" Wizard.
Sound issues
I have had a similar problem but located my problem to the microswitch which is in the headphone socket. Might be worth trying pulling the headphones in and out a few times to see if it allows the microswitch to release (if that is the problem?)
Steve
The wizard is magic
Some how my wizard seemed to repair it self. Its sound is working again...i didn't reflash or do anything special....weird. I think its because the phone had a good vibrate....ive got one of those speaker docks for the wizard..i put it in there...got a phone call and talked and stuff...but while it was in there (with the mic plugged it) it vibrated alot...maybe that flicked the switch mentioned above?
weird..this phone never ceases to amaze me. I just hope it doesn't happen again... because it appears to be emerging as a problem as the wizards get older?
Keep up the good work guys!
LOL!!!!!!!!! its so simple and yet so amazingly smart
wow, Steve you are the most amazing person EVER!
I put the headphone piece in about 1/10 of the way and slowly made a swirling action as i slid it all the way in, clicked the start button on wizard and i heard the "click" for the first time in a month!
Thanks!
I tried different options to get my sound back, no luck so far
Problem started after using the headset-connector to connect it to an FM-Transmitter.
After reading this thread, my guess is that the "micro-switch" is in a wrong position. So I opend my MDA, but can't find any "switch" in that connector.
Is there some more info about that connector, a connection-diagram perhaps ?
what worked for me was inserting the headset jack in roughly, robbing each side of the headset jack to try to hit the "switch". that might work for you.
Yes!!! Thank you a lot!
I have the same problem, no sound in my speakers, just vibrate and sound in handsfree. I figure out that this micro-switch could be the problem, but I haven't know how to solve it. Thank you once again, I love my SPV!! and this community.
Fixed!
Woohoo!
This problem just cropped up for me on the weekend.
Thankfully it wasn't long before I happened across this thread.
About a minute of persistent jiggling the microphone jack did the trick.
Thanks!

HELP NEEDED!!! No Sound whatsoever

Hello,
i seriously need help.
Until this morning, my X1 worked. Over the last few days I was playing around a bit with various TF3D options, etc. I should note that I did not touch the ROM.
Then suddenly my phone gave no sound anymore.
No audible resonse to a stilus click on the screen.
No sound from FM radio.
No sound from phone (neither ring nor can I hear the caller).
(Vibra alarm works when activated though)
When switching to speakerphone I hear a very soft static crackle when doing the switch. Just as if the speaker is turned on. But then - no sound at all.
No microphone function on phone (caller cannot hear me).
No sound via headphones on phone.
No sound via headphones on MP3 playback.
Everything else appart from sound works. Even the phone can make a connection when calling - you just hear nothing.
I tried a soft reset. Nothing - still no sound.
Then I tried a hard reset:
Obviously the hardware of my speaker is ok. Because when I make a hard reset, there is the "pling" sound to inform me, that I should calibrate my screen.
Then there is another "pling" when the message appear, asking if I want to get the automatic provider settings updated.
But afterwards - no sound at all in the whole phone.
Then I went to update the ROM, thinking I might have (no idea how, but you never know) done something to audio drivers. I replaced my German T-Mobile ROM with the prepared German ROM without branding from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446070
But still - same result as above.
Anyone got any idea?
Really nobody having any helpful comment?
did you try to change the radio??
I flashed a whole new ROM - same problem persists.
Besides: It´s not a Radio problem because system sounds and MP3 playback don't have any sound either.
Stating the obvious
Sorry to state the obvious but it sounds like the connection or the speaker module has gone. Have you recently tried the head phones on the X1? please see below link for a possible reason.

Hello Creamy-Goodness,
thanks for you input.
If there was somewhere a hardware switch for sound output to speaker or headphones (which I doubt) that is stuck, it would not explain why I have neither sound in speaker NOR headphones. (One would assume that depending on the position of the switch at least one of the two should work.)
Apart from that I only tried the headphones to troubleshoot the problem after I found out there was no sound.
Nevertheless interesting, that this happens to other devices.
Speaker module cannot have gone either. There is an audible system sound from speaker right after hard reset to inform me that I need to calibrate the screen - but no sound anymore afterwards.
I will try to have the device swapped next week.
reg. sound issue
I'm suffering from the same problem here.
it only freggin vibrates.

Usually there is a simple fix which involves replacing a DLL, but not in this case of course - unless that ROM includes the bad DLL. I seem to remember it was a problem which occured after installing TF3D, but I couldn't find anything when searching just now.
It might be worth you checking the ear-speaker sound (make a phone call), as there is always the possibility that sound is being re-directed or intercepted (by something like Troca2). Check what programs and services are running.
Tests should be done with a known-to-work-fine-ROM of course.
Okay, I finally got the original ROM to flash the X1 back.
And strangely - when after one week of not using it I turned it on again to flash the phone, I got my sound back.
I have absolutely no idea what happened and why, but I am glad that I do not have to send it back.
@k_ash82
What I did is:
Turned my X1 off (not just stand-by), really off.
Waited one week.
Switched it on again.
I had my sound back.
No idea why, but maybe that works for you as well?
Just try it and please post your experience.
It would be very kind of you to share the german t-mobile stock rom with the community . Perhaps it could be added to "Xperia ROM and Guides" Thread, too.
I have no sound sometimes with this rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=460190.
After switch off and turn on the phone again the sound is back.
Karsten
i have original sony rom (no branding) and also the same problems
no sound after a while (sometimes when phone goes in standby, sometimes just without a reason)
cannot play any sound in no application (media player, core player, etc) also the phone ringing or sms sound is off.
but the most annoying thing is, i can make a call, the call goes through, but I can hear nothing from the called person.
sometimes it works when i switch of the phone and restart, but sometimes I have to do 4 or 5 restarts.
the phone is now 1 week old, an I haven't installed Touch3D or anything like that, because I made hardreset and left the original configuration on factory settings, just to make sure, that it's no software error.
anyone got a solve for this problem actually?
if I ask google, there are many people with this problem, but no solve found till now
i have an issue with the speaker too but not exactly the same as the one described above.
my speaker still plays sound but it is about 10% of the original volume when it is already set to loudest (you have to put your ear right next to the speaker to hear the sound)
after i re-flashed the rom, it worked normally for about half a day until the problem returned
can anyone please help??
i keep missing my calls ><
thanks
this is a well known issue on some X1 phones ! you cant fix this with any software-update because it is hardware related. some x1 phones have it like every 2 weeks, others 3-4 times a day. most of the time you can just reset your phone but this is not a solution.
you have to send it back to SE in exchange for a new one.
i called my provider (o2) and they delivered a new x1 _on the next day_ in exchange (they have a 48 hrs delivery/pickup/return service).
the new phone works just fine !

Problem with JFv1.5 Phone Calls While Listening to Music

Hello Everyone,
I'm having some odd problems that seemed to have started when I updated to CRB43. There are 2 consistant things I've noticed so far and these all happen when a headset adapter device is plugged into the phone.
1. If I'm listening to music in my car and a phone call comes in, the music stops (as it should), but there is no ring, just vibrate. When I try to unplug the adapter and answer the call, there is silence and the call goes to voicemail even though the phone appears to be in the call.
2. While listening to music, if I get any kind of notification, the sound goes dead even though the music is still playing.
In both cases I have to reboot the phone to get back to normal.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Tim
I had the same problem.
Use Lucid's script and restore the Audio to stock.
If that doesn't work, reinstall the radio from HTC.
I finally got mine working by doing both on the same reboot, so I'm not sure which one fixed it when I was using JF's rom. Whichever, the combo of both did the trick for me.
I must have not done the radio update, because that's what worked for me, it's working good now. Thanks for the reply!
Super.
Glad it worked.
I'm not exactly sure how mine got overwritten either. But I figure it was one those causing the problems.
Now...
I've been trying the audio hack, and I simply cannot get it to work. No combination of versions work without phone calls and notifications completely stopping the audio server. Regardless of the build I choose. Luckily, I don't give up

No sound during calls or when media plays

My MyTouch 1.2 is acting really frustratingly stupid. The speaker and mic aren't working right, and the closest solution (and explanation) I could find for this was a post I found on a T-Mobile forum:
A few weeks back I tried to make a call on my phone and I wanted to use the speaker, when I brought up the menu to select "speaker", I noticed that the option was greyed out and so I couldn't enable it. After that I looked at the screen and it said it was dialing, but I heard no sound coming out. Next I clicked the volume control all the way down to mute and then all the way to max volume, still no sound. After ending the call I double-checked to make sure I wasn't connected to any bluetooth device, bluetooth was disabled. So then I tried to change the ringer volume and the speaker emitted its beeps letting me know how loud the ring volume was. That told me the speakers worked as well as the hardware responsible for generating sound. My next idea was to see if the media player had sound, so I played an mp3 from my sd card, no sound, went to youtube and played a few different videos, no sound. Called my friend, who was standing next to me, and when he answered he said he couldn't hear me speaking, I couldn't hear him either.
Something was seriously wrong with my phone so I bit the bullet and reset it to factory settings, the problem persisted. I took the phone to a TMobile store and they got me a replacement phone. The phone was working for 3 days and then the same problem occured. I got another phone (my 3rd phone) and this morning it has stopped working in the exact same way. I don't do any hacks or developer apps. There is no pattern to this except that it always seems like I'm at work when it happens.
UPDATE WITH SOLUTION: After thinking about this issue it occurred to me that the phone was behaving as if it had a bluetooth device connected to it. As an experiment, I went to my car which is paired with my phone and selected the audio source as my phone. At first it couldn't connect to my phone. So I looked at my phone's bluetooth setting and the status for my car's connection was "paired and not connected". I selected the connection on phone and retried with my car and bam, audio now works. I disconnected the phone from the bluetooth and sound was restored! So mytouch 3g has a bug in their bluetooth services. TMobile/HTC, hit me up if you are looking for a top-notch developer to fix your defects.

Unfortunately, this solution didn't work for me, and I've tried pairing it with every device I could possibly pair it with. No dice. Anyone have a fix for this?
