[Q] Connecting GB GT-P1000 Tab to SGS3 Wi-Fi Hotspot - Galaxy Tab General

I know that I'm gonna get blasted for this but...
I've read some where that one can make the GT-P1000 connect to portable Wi-Fi hotspots where, previously, this was unavailable to Tab users.
I have a un-modded SG Tab that I'd like to pair with my SGS3 for the purposes of surfing the Web on the go.
Can this be done.

I don't own an SGS3, but if it's like every Galaxy so far, you just need to go to:
Settings > Find "Tethering and portable hotspot" under Wireless and Network option (should be the first section) > And just turn your "Portable Wi-Fi hotspot" on, you can even configure it with a name and password.
Once this is done, go to your SGT7 and scan Wi-Fi and connect to your SGS3 hotspot.
Hope that helps.

i have my eris rooted with wireless tethering. can i connect the galaxy tab to the phone somehow?
i turned on the wifi tethering but it creates an ad hoc network, not a hotspot. So, i went to Best Buy and tried to get the Demo tab to find my phone but it wouldnt. I forgot to try the BT tethering instead of the wifi tho.
any thoughts?

Tethering Xoom to iphone

Has anyone got this working yet, I am having problems with bluetooth connection with my iphone 4. it has a hard time seeing the xoom, but the xoom sees the iphone fine. When i finally get it to pair it says "Connection Unsuccessful Xoom is not supported" is there any way around this, also i am using my wii without the on demand service.
I'll definitely watch this thread. I have an iPhone 3Gs and for now only the PDAnet free version. It works nicely to create a WiFi hotspot for my Nook Color but the verdict for the Xoom is still out. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple makes it harder to tether non-Apple products.
I don't think the iPhone supports Bluetooth DUN profile (dial up networking) natively or by default.
Why not use any of the wifi tether apps? You might need to jailbreak.

That's a bummer! I wish that software wouldn't always limit or cripple hardware capabilities...
FWI - Using MyWi implies the jailbreak
im using an iphone4 jailbroken with Mywi 3g and my xoom doesn't seem to see the wifi network that it creates. My only conclusion is that the xoom doesnt see ad hoc networks. can anyone confirm this.
P.s. i cant get Mywi 3g bluetooth tethering working either
Android by default doesn't support ad-hoc networks. The only phone I have seen that does is the droid x and that's because motorola added it in
I can confirm the Xoom (and most android devices) don't work with Ad Hoc networks.
I can also confirm that using a jailbroken iPhone4 with MyWi you CAN tether using bluetooth.
I followed these directions to get bluetooth tethering to work:
1: on XOOM, go to settings>wireless & networks>tethering and portable hotspot and make sure that "Bluetooth Tethering" is UNCHECKED, this is NOT what we want
2: on XOOM, go to settings>wireless & networks> enable airplane mode
3: on XOOM, go to settings>wireless & networks> enable bluetooth
4: on your android phone, go to settings>wireless & networks (or equivalent)> enable bluetooth
5: Make sure that both devices are discoverable, so that they can see one another, should be in settings>wireless & networks>bluetooth settings
6: on XOOM, go to settings>wireless & networks>bluetooth settings>select your phone in order to pair it with your XOOM
7: a box should pop up on both devices, select Pair on both devices
8: on XOOM, once the pairing is complete (still inside bluetooth settings), select the phone, it should say paired but not connected underneath it
9: The two devices should connect, and if it works then the bottom right hand corner of your XOOM should have two bluetooth icons, one should indicated that your bluetooth is turned on and the other should say bluetooth tethered.
Note: That I had to use MyWi to setup Bluetooth laptop tethering NOT the Bluetooth on demand option.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the attempt, but still no luck. my iphone 4 doesn't see the xoom under bluetooth.
It took me several tries but it DOES work.
Are you using a "registered" version of MyWi?
Did you setup "Laptop Tethering" in MyWi?
At step 8, you have to tap once on the phone in the list and then it connects.
Where, exactly, are things going wrong?

Im not using a registered version of MyWi. I dont want to buy it if its not going to work. I don't think this is an issue, since i cant even get the xoom and iphone4 to pair
i have set up laptop tether in MyWi
My main issue is that my iphone does not see the xoom in bluetooth settings.
My Xoom sees my iphone and when i hit pair, it cycles through but doesn't pair with it. i have both set to be discoverable.
any suggestions
look for "tetherme" on Cydia, 2 bucks gets you hotspot and an infrastructure network, no additional carrier fees
Ok,
I had this same issue - more than once. It's a two way pairing and it took me several tries to get it right. You WILL get prompted on each device, and must accept the pairing on each device for it to work.
Try restarting the iPhone and the Xoom.
Make sure the devices are in close proximity.
Then make the iPhone and Xoom discoverable.
Initiate the pairing from the Xoom - if it's working then you will see the pairing message on both devices... takes about 30 seconds for the dialogs to pop up if I am remembering correctly.
Let me know.

On the Bluetooth "screen" in MyWi, there are two sections... the one at the top is for OnDemand tethering of iOS Devices. If you scroll down (working from memory here - I am at work and don't have my iPhone in hand as a reference) you will see a section for setting up laptop tethering.

Hey man, I followed your directions exactly and i can't seem to get the Xoom to get the tether.
I am using a new xoom obviously, and an Iphone 3gs with a paid version of miwi.
I have the bluetooth connection status on my bottom screen, but no others dealing with bluetooth.
They paired fine, and i understand what you meant about the laptop bluetooth and not on demand, and followed the directions perfectly..
The last few steps confused me slightly, is it suppose to say "Connected" or Paired but not connected? I've tried both and neither seem to work.
Please help, I payed 800 for the xoom so i wouldn't have to have a 2 year contract only to find out i cant connect to the miwi ad hoc connection, so if you can help me you will be saving me 35 a month, and i will be able to tether to my unlimited data package iphone.
i will love you
and thank you all up and down this forum.
I am at work right now, and it's a "no cell phone or tablet" zone. Later this afternoon I will see if I can nail down the specifics so others can duplicate what I did.

GOT IT FINALLY
First of all i uninstalled MyWi but im sure this would have worked with it. I only uninstalled it because i like how tether me enables native tethering.
I installed Tetherme Cracked version on iphone 4.. once done reset phone
In order to get them paired but not connected( theres a difference)
make sure your Xoom's Bluetooth is on
turn on bluetooth tethering under Tethering and portable hotspot on your Xoom
make sure your iphone and xoom are discoverable
find your iphone on you xoom and click it
you should get a message on both of your devices to pair hit Okay
then you will see your iphone is paired but not connected
go back and unselect bluetooth tethering under tethering and portable hotspot
mine connected automatically after that and tethering was a go
Let me know if it works for you
Ok!
Both my devices say they are connected, but mywi says there is no active connections, and my xoom doesn't have any other icon besides the bluetooth one.
I've tried a few time, rebooting both devices, and just messing around with the connections.
My Xoom is telling me as far as tethering goes for the bluetooth to my iphone that it's tethered. but it just won't. It will show that its tethered whether i have mywi up or not.

[HOW TO] FINALLY got my DROID 1 paired with TF for 3G access

Heres a how to for you android phone users to get mobile data from your phone through bluetooth. We know honeycomb wont play nice with ad-hoc wireless but it will allow you to connect using bluetooth.
I have a an OG droid running Bugless GPA15 2.3.3 build @ 1GHZ.
First download 'wireless tether for root users' from here and install it on your mobile device:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
You MUST have a rooted handset for this wifi tether apk to work. The TF however does NOT need root access.
Step 1: on TF, go to settings>wireless & networks>tethering and portable hotspot and make sure that "Bluetooth Tethering" is UNCHECKED, this is NOT what we want
Step 2: on TF, go to settings>wireless & networks> enable airplane mode
Step 3: on TF, go to settings>wireless & networks> enable bluetooth
Step 4: on your android phone, go to settings>wireless & networks (or equivalent)> enable bluetooth
Step 5: Make sure that both devices are discoverable, so that they can see one another, should be in settings>wireless & networks>bluetooth settings
Step 6: on your android phone, open Wireless tether and go to MENU>settings>and check the "use bluetooth", then back to application homescreen & click the middle of the screen to start tethering.
Step 7: on TF, go to settings>wireless & networks>bluetooth settings>select your phone in order to pair it with your TF
Step 7a: a box should pop up on both devices, select Pair on both devices
Step 8: If done correctly your phone will appear under 'paired devices' in the TF menu, and yellow exclamation point (with the device name) will be displayed on your android handset in wireless tether showing that you have a user connected to your network.
Step 8a: If you have issues click the wrench next to the device name in your TF bluetooth settings menu and make sure in profiles it it says 'Tethering'.
Step 9: TA-DA, if it worked then in the bottom right hand corner of your TF should have two bluetooth icons, one should indicated that your bluetooth is turned on and the other should say bluetooth tethered, you are now using your phones internet data plan on your TF.

I've got a Captivate on AT&T running Cognition rom, and the Transformer connects to its Wifi Access Point feature with no issues.
My Xperia X10 is not supported (not on the list) and I didn't see a generic one..
Any suggestions as to what I could use (or even another app to accomplish the same thing?)

your captivate is probably broadcasting a REAL wifi signal and not a ad-hoc wifi connection like us with our archaic cellphones have to deal with

you shouldnt have any issues running a build for a different device. try downloading and installing one of the apk's and give it a whirl.
Something that I noticed with just a rooted D1 was that although I was able to technically bluetooth tether (TF showed bluetooth tether) I was not able to access the internet. Issue was solved installing a ROM (I went with Cyanogen 7.0.3)
Should there be a noticeable difference between wi fi and BT tethering? I tried to tether via bluetooth and it was terribly slow and I wasn't sure if that is to be expected.

Thank you very much. Very cool, sent from my tf tethered to my d1 running cm7
does this use less battery than wireless tether?
Why is this better than the wireless hotspot? Bluetooth isn't all that fast generally.
My friend has a droid 1 and I have a Nexus One, we broadcast all the time to tablets, notebooks, etc. I'm ATT and he's VZW.
Most phones cannot broadcast a true wifi connection only adhoc wireless, which honeycomb wont recognize, hence the bluetooth
Hmm, seems odd that honeycomb would have such a limitation. I'm assuming this will be solved in the future with custom roms?

TF Bluetooth Tethered to iPhone
I tried doing wi-fi tethering but it doesn't work with the iphone since MyWi creates an ad-hoc hotspot. The Tf101 is not able to see it.
But Bluetooth tethering works just fine, with my jailbroken iphone 4.
Hmm, I tried this exactly as described but can't get the TF and Droid to connect. It just says "paired but not conneted" and nothing happens.
make sure that wireless tether is set for bluetooth mode and that you clicked start tether before you connect the tf and the droid. Also clcik the wrench to the side of the droid in the bluetooth menu on the tf and make sure it says tethering if not click it.

Yup, did all that in that order and still nothing. Clicking the wrench does show "Tethering" with "Use for internet access" as the sub-text, but clicking that just makes it show "Connecting..." for a few seconds and then back to "Use for internet access"
I guess I should have read more closely, I don't have the right kernel, it was right there in the FAQ's...
I just wanted to note, that "Wireless Tether for Root Users" from the Market is actually totally unnecessary. You can do all of this with an unrooted phone and unrooted tablet if you just skip "Step 6". It is completely unnecessary, at least for my Droid X and other phones that I've tried.

Wireless Tether to A500

I have found a fairly easy way to tether the 3g connection on my droid x to my a500. The wireless tether app in the market was not working at all, neither was barnacle.
Attached is the wifi tether app which does work, download and install it on your phone.
Once installed and running; the a500 will see the network and connect to it, but still no internet when the browser is opened.
To fix that: open it and go to menu > settings > Change LAN > and select 192.168.3.0/24.
Hooray, it works; Just in time for a road trip
I hope this is helpful for others.

I'm having the same problem; no recognition that they hotspot even exists.
My a500 is rooted, but other than that, it's stock. Did you have to do anything to it?
acer inconia 500a wireless tetering galaxy s
my solution is
in Galaxy S settings-wireless connections-use as cellular modem-mobile AP
in Acer Inconia 500 turn ON the wireless - it should recognize the Galaxy S
I use a USB connection between the two to use the 500 battery on the Galaxy S
that's it
I just downloaded FoxFi (free app) from the market, had it set up and running on my Razr Maxx in a couple minutes, and it's been problem-free since. No settings on the tablet needed at all. Set your password on the phone, enter it on the A500, good to go.
Cool, great, works
I use Barnacle on my phone and it works fine.
This is more dependant on your phone (ROM, kernel, tethering app, etc.) than it is on the A500. I was tethering fine between my A500 and my Sprint HTC Evo 4G until the latest Gingerbread update, where Sprint purposely broke it with the new kernel. Running a non-stock kernel solved that problem for me.
This will continue to resurface as a problem for most phones because the service providers don't want you tethering without paying the extra $ for the feature.
i wouldnt use foxfi, i read somewhere that they gather info (i think its in the permission box you check off)
but if you install the AD-HOC wifi patch it wifi teather or wireless tether should work just fine.
just google ad-hoc wifi patch (i cant post it) heck i found it in the dev section

Frustrated! Help with tethering

I know it's not rocket science. I consider my technically sound.
But for the life of me, I can't tether my Nexus 7 to my Galaxy S3 using both Wifi Hotspot AND Bluetooth.
With Wifi Hotspot, my Nexus 7 shows connected and has excellent signal strength, but I cannot connect to any website or access the play store. It's like no data is going through.
The same with my bluetooth connect. It shows it's paired and connected, but no internet data.
I called Fido (my carrier and they say I have tethering enabled on my account - of course it should be enabled cause I've tethered before)

I've tethered my N7 to my Evo LTE with wifi tons of times. Are you sure the phone is actually pushing out data? Try tethering your laptop or something to it to see if it's the phone or tab.

When you tether from bluetooth, pull down the notification drawer and look at the bottom.
Does it say "Bluetooth Tethered" or does it say "No Internet Connection" instead?
For me, I know even after pairing my phone and my tablet, I have to go into Settings > Wireless & Networks > More > Tethering and Portable Hotspot > and check off Bluetooth Tethering.
And after that, sometimes I have to go back to the bluetooth menu of either device and click on the other device so it actually connects.
If its working, you should see the words "Connected" below your phone in the bluetooth menu of your tablet.
And the notification drawer should say "Bluetooth Tethered"
Not sure what may be wrong with your wifi hotspot though.

I called to check and the rep says I do. But he does sound like a newbie though.
I'll call back and see if another rep (hopefully more knowledgeable) can assist me.
Thanks for all who chimed with your suggestions. I will press thanks for all of you.
I called back Fido and everything seemed normal. Tethering was enabled as it always should on my account.
What he did was push some information to the server which I guess automatically sets up my phones settings to match up with Fidos settings. Told me to power cycle for 30 seconds after we hung up. I did so, and after it started up, I heard a notification on my Nexus 7 which I knew instantly that whatever he did worked.
On my tablet I use PDAnet from the Play Market.
On my phone I use FoxFi from the Play Market.
Both Apps are free & usually do not require ROOT on either device.
1) Once both Apps are installed turn on Bluetooth on your tablet. (Find your Settings App either in your App Drawer or by pulling your Notification Bar & selecting the Settings button next to your rotation lock.)
2) Open PDAnet on the tablet.
3) Hit CONFIGURE in the main screen of PDAnet.
4) Select ANDROID (BLUETOOTH).
5) Now open FoxFi on your phone.
6) Check the box next to ACTIVATE BLUETOOTH DUN. This will turn on your Bluetooth & make your device discoverable.
7) A warning box will appear. Select YES.
8) Go back to your tablet & PDAnet.
9) Hit the option to start scanning.
10) After a few seconds your phone should appear.
11) Select the name of your phone. Mine was ADR6350.
12) On your tablet select CONNECT.
13) A warning will appear. Check the box that says I TRUST THIS APPLICATION. Then select OK.
Open your tablet's Chrome Browser & try opening a website. You should be up & running now.
