No need to tether Wifi... Bluetooth tether works

I have a droidX, and was syncing the two devices to push a file across them when I saw bluetooth tethering... it works flawlessly. I never even heard about this during all the "screw the data plan, I'll wifi tether my tablet" hoo-ha.
Basically: sync up a phone with the tablet so they see each other.
Then go into bluetooth settings on the Xoom: settings > wireless and networks > bluetooth settings > paired devices > (YOUR PHONE)... and click the wrench icon. There's a tether option right there sitting in broad daylight... no need to even have a rooted handset I guess?

Cool! That's great for those of us with OG Droids who can't use infrastructure mode.
I'm curious though. If I'm tethering via bluetooth, will I simultaneously be able to use my bluetooth headset with the XOOM, or my Droid for that matter?

Good lord! This actually freaking works! I'm typing this post from my Xoom that is bluetooth tethered to my droidx. Thank you google for this crazy easter egg

Ok, I may be dumb and not really familiar with bluetooth, but can I get some help with this? I've got them paired, but how do I get them to connect?

so does this mean anyone with a smartphone data plan should not need the pLAN for xoom?
I dont see a tether option.

I'm trying to connect to my OG droid and I am having trouble connecting as well. It pairs just fine. To the users having trouble, are you rooted with a custom rom and kernel? I'm trying to narrow this issue since others on the same mobile device are having success.

Do you have to be rooted (on the phone side) to be able to successfully do this? I have a Droid X and tried tethering my PSP the other night and no luck, might be a similar situation.

Why not just use "wireless tether" form the market? Or does it not work on the Droid X? I was using it to tether my Xoom to my Evo running on Sprints 4G....

WiFi Tether doesn't work for some of us because Android doesn't connect through ad-hoc. The bluetooth solution sounds like our only option aside from wired tethering.

My Droid X works fine with my laptop, but not with certain devices. My Xoom is being delivered later today and I'll let you know how it goes. =P

Is Bluetooth as relatively fast as WiFi?

Not sure.
Maybe someone who is able to do both could do a speed test.

Anyone wanna shed some light here? Is it just the Droid X this works with?

The DroidX has trouble with data connectivity(3g) with the current release Wireless Tether app. There is a prerelease 2.07 that fixes this. I am now wifi and bluetooth tethering without data disconnects. Download the release from the wireless tether website.

I tether my droidx to my Xoom to use its unlimited data. Works fine, most of the time, but I do have to stop/start wifi tether on my droidx occasionally.

Update: I downloaded the experimental apk on the wireless tether's site and installed it on my Droid. My Xoom is now able to use my Droid's data via bluetooth option. JACKPOT!

[Guide] Bluetooth Tether and File Transfer

There multiple threads dealing with how to get Bluetooth tether to work here is how.
First you need a rooted Android phone.
You must have a phone that running a kernel that has "CONFIG_BT_BNEP" compiled into the kernel you are using.
Otherwise it won't work.
1. Download Android Wifi Tether App version 2.0.7 (do not download higher versions because bluetooth option is not there.
2. Go to your phone turn on bluetooth.
3. Go to your TF -> Settings -> Wireless & Network -> Enable Bluetooth.
Then in TF make Discoverable under Bluetooth Settings.
4. Now you can pair the phone with the TF by scanning for device under your phone.
Hit confirm to pair on both devices. You will notice that both devices will show the other device as "paired but not connected."
5. You need to now go to Wireless & networks settings under the TF -> Tethering & portable hotspot -> enable Bluetooth tethering.
6. Now go to the Wireless Tethering app on your phone. Menu -> Settings -> Enable Use Bluetooth, Enable Discoverable, Enable Access-Control
7. Exit out of the Settings in the Wireless Tethering app. Enable Bluetooth Tether.
8. Go back to the TF under Bluetooth Settings you should be able to tap the your phone device and get the tethering option.
9. You may need to allow the TF on your phone's Wireless Tethering app.
To get Bluetooth File Transfer to work download the Bluetooth File Transfer app from Market to both devices then you are done. No rooted device needed.

Bluetooth tether unsuccessful
Wifi Tethering works but need bluetooth tether at work since I can't use wifi due to wifi policy. Followed the steps above and still no go for me. I have htc evo Myns 2.2. Any other suggestions?

Try get Bluetooth File Transfer to work on your phone and the TF. Were you at least able to achieve that?

First of all thank you for the guide, it worked flawlessly with my TF and Droid X its just the wording causes a bit of confusion for me. Not sure if you meant disable or enable and the option was already unchecked for me.

I did this just last night and tethered to my DX. I didn't have the Wireless Tether app, so I had to go find it - not on the market since the carriers are *****ing about tethering, but I was able to find it from the developer.
Set it to BT tethering, paired the devices and hit the wrench icon on the TF, and BAM! Tethered!
I won't use it very much at all, but I'm taking a couple weeks off and will likely do a 4 day road trip with a friend, so having a connection out on the road will be nice.

Just a heads up.. running a rooted D1 I was able to get my TF to bluetooth tether but not to share the 3G. Installed a ROM (CM7) and was good to go with 3G bluetooth tether working like a charm.

Is this more efficient than wifi tethering?

Saves way more battery than wifi tether and also better speed.

Bluetooth options are disabled under wifi tether. I have enabled bluetooth on my rooted thunderbolt and the TF and both see each other. But I cant proceed further.

I tried this and the wifi apk said I didn't have the correct kernel and so this didn't work...and some of the options were greyed out.
I have an X10 with cobrato's MIUI installed and the stock kernel.

Mine worked great the last time I used it (a couple of weeks ago) but now it won't connect to my phone.. No idea why

Same issue here using a HTC Inspire 4G. Gets through Paried but not Connected step but on the phone the bluetooth options under Wireless Tether settings are grayed out.

Are you using version 2.0.7 I linked in the OP? I am also on Inspire 4G. Of course I assume your phone is rooted.

You shouldn't have to use a tethering app to use the bluetooth tethering on the droid x. You can set up the tethering through the stock wieless and network menus on the DX and transformer.

Tried bluetooth file transfer but keep getting errors when sending a picture to my Transformer. Any other suggestions?

[HOW TO] FINALLY got my DROID 1 paired with TF for 3G access

Heres a how to for you android phone users to get mobile data from your phone through bluetooth. We know honeycomb wont play nice with ad-hoc wireless but it will allow you to connect using bluetooth.
I have a an OG droid running Bugless GPA15 2.3.3 build @ 1GHZ.
First download 'wireless tether for root users' from here and install it on your mobile device:

You MUST have a rooted handset for this wifi tether apk to work. The TF however does NOT need root access.
Step 1: on TF, go to settings>wireless & networks>tethering and portable hotspot and make sure that "Bluetooth Tethering" is UNCHECKED, this is NOT what we want
Step 2: on TF, go to settings>wireless & networks> enable airplane mode
Step 3: on TF, go to settings>wireless & networks> enable bluetooth
Step 4: on your android phone, go to settings>wireless & networks (or equivalent)> enable bluetooth
Step 5: Make sure that both devices are discoverable, so that they can see one another, should be in settings>wireless & networks>bluetooth settings
Step 6: on your android phone, open Wireless tether and go to MENU>settings>and check the "use bluetooth", then back to application homescreen & click the middle of the screen to start tethering.
Step 7: on TF, go to settings>wireless & networks>bluetooth settings>select your phone in order to pair it with your TF
Step 7a: a box should pop up on both devices, select Pair on both devices
Step 8: If done correctly your phone will appear under 'paired devices' in the TF menu, and yellow exclamation point (with the device name) will be displayed on your android handset in wireless tether showing that you have a user connected to your network.
Step 8a: If you have issues click the wrench next to the device name in your TF bluetooth settings menu and make sure in profiles it it says 'Tethering'.
Step 9: TA-DA, if it worked then in the bottom right hand corner of your TF should have two bluetooth icons, one should indicated that your bluetooth is turned on and the other should say bluetooth tethered, you are now using your phones internet data plan on your TF.

I've got a Captivate on AT&T running Cognition rom, and the Transformer connects to its Wifi Access Point feature with no issues.

My Xperia X10 is not supported (not on the list) and I didn't see a generic one..
Any suggestions as to what I could use (or even another app to accomplish the same thing?)

your captivate is probably broadcasting a REAL wifi signal and not a ad-hoc wifi connection like us with our archaic cellphones have to deal with

you shouldnt have any issues running a build for a different device. try downloading and installing one of the apk's and give it a whirl.

Something that I noticed with just a rooted D1 was that although I was able to technically bluetooth tether (TF showed bluetooth tether) I was not able to access the internet. Issue was solved installing a ROM (I went with Cyanogen 7.0.3)

Should there be a noticeable difference between wi fi and BT tethering? I tried to tether via bluetooth and it was terribly slow and I wasn't sure if that is to be expected.

Why is this better than the wireless hotspot? Bluetooth isn't all that fast generally.
My friend has a droid 1 and I have a Nexus One, we broadcast all the time to tablets, notebooks, etc. I'm ATT and he's VZW.

Most phones cannot broadcast a true wifi connection only adhoc wireless, which honeycomb wont recognize, hence the bluetooth

Hmm, seems odd that honeycomb would have such a limitation. I'm assuming this will be solved in the future with custom roms?

I tried doing wi-fi tethering but it doesn't work with the iphone since MyWi creates an ad-hoc hotspot. The Tf101 is not able to see it.
But Bluetooth tethering works just fine, with my jailbroken iphone 4.

Hmm, I tried this exactly as described but can't get the TF and Droid to connect. It just says "paired but not conneted" and nothing happens.

make sure that wireless tether is set for bluetooth mode and that you clicked start tether before you connect the tf and the droid. Also clcik the wrench to the side of the droid in the bluetooth menu on the tf and make sure it says tethering if not click it.

Yup, did all that in that order and still nothing. Clicking the wrench does show "Tethering" with "Use for internet access" as the sub-text, but clicking that just makes it show "Connecting..." for a few seconds and then back to "Use for internet access"

I guess I should have read more closely, I don't have the right kernel, it was right there in the FAQ's...

I just wanted to note, that "Wireless Tether for Root Users" from the Market is actually totally unnecessary. You can do all of this with an unrooted phone and unrooted tablet if you just skip "Step 6". It is completely unnecessary, at least for my Droid X and other phones that I've tried.

This is only the case with newer devices. Mine will do nothing if i dont use the app

Got Wireless tethering to work But....

Ok so I got wireless tethering to work form my rooted Epic 4g to my galaxy tab 10.1 and its pretty cool. I did it with wireless tethering version 3. The only thing is that at first i couldn't get it to work because of the authentication once I turn off the encryption on my Epic it worked perfectly and connected right away. But what I don't get is why it doesn't work with the password if anyone can give me some advise why this is happening it would be cool, Thanks.

Strange, I tether all the time without issue. Should be possible. Are you using an app or built-in settings for tethering.

I got the app version (V3 is the only one that works) . I mean it works,..just not with the password on.

I use wifi tethering with my samsung galaxy phone with tmobile. you should try changing setting in build in tethering app and see if this works. I use 'quick settings' free app from market for quick access to wifi hotspot settings.

I have this problem too, it tethers fine but whenever it comes to things requiring password (like email logins) it rejects the password.
can any one who doesnt have this problem share which software they use for tethering?

how did you get tethering to work? i have tried the wpa_supplicant hack but the wifi drops every 10 seconds. what rom are you running & what supplicant file did you use?

It only works right with wireless tethering app version 3. Apparently if you have the rom that has it built in you shouldnt have any problems.

I use bluetooth tethering fron my Win Mobile Treo Pro running wmwifirouter. I got tired of trying to root and do the wpa supplicant thing. Android needs to support adhoc wifi out the box across the board. So ridiculous really by now.

Ok...so Im still on an older phone ( Droid Eris ) but it's rooted running Gingerbread and the wireless tether v.2.07 works great with my laptop but wont work at all with the Galaxy Tab? I really don't understand this. I have tried everything from leaving it completely open to setting up all the appropriate authentication and access control. I tried the link in the thread for 3.0 and even select the Desire..which I think is the basis of the rom I am on...and just got errors in the log.
Anyone else having these issues? Not sure why it works fine on the laptop but not the tablet?

I am running v 2.0.7 on a myTouch. When I wireless tether with access control on I can check Gmail,but browser will not get websites. If I turn off AC, then browser works OK.

I think that 2.07 is ad-hoc only and honeycomb doesn't support ad-hoc. (someone correct me if I'm wrong). There are a few threads around here somewhere where you can replace/edit a file that allows ad-hoc support. As to your other question, I use Wifi tether-pre11 and it works without issue. I'll link it to you. Make sure you change "device profile" under settings in the app to correspond with your device. I had troubles with the app until I set the device profile to my device. Depending upon your luck, you may have to try a few different pre-release files on wifi tether 3.0 to find the right one. Like I said, pre11 works great for my Epic, but your device may be different. Just don't use the top one (test2) as I recall seeing that its meant for Samsung devices.

Have an epic and I'm running 3.0 pre11 and I can use encryption. Its under deprecated downloads in the google code page. See above link.

i am actually tethering thru my epic to post this. The wifi tether is screwy for our phones. I use SFR1.2 and geno1.1final. 3g works, 4g causes a instant reboot on the phone, but it works in infrastructer mode without issue.

Can you post those APK's or the instruction please, I have an Epic as well.

I use wifi tether to connect my thunderbolt to my gt10.1. With version 3 I have it set to softap (master) not ad hoc. Access control is on and I have the routing fix box checked for htc phones. I tethered well over 1gb this morning with no problems

Check the android development section of the epic section.. SFR1.2 is the rom, Genocide 1.1final is the kernel. They include wifi tether that works for the epic in the rom..

Ok..finally followed the guide here and replaced my wpa_supplicant using the links provided. I have wireless tether v3.0pre14 working with no authentication. I am now going to play with authentication and may back down to pre11 since you had good luck with it. I am surfing solid with no drops...video streaming is fairly slow but thats to be expected I would assume. I am running rooted 10.1 retail 32MB with Verizon Droid Eris rooted running GB 2.3.3.

Just to add a data point, I hadn't tried tethering my Tab to my Thunderbolt until I read this thread. I am running Wireless Tether 2.08pre. I set up access control and also enabled wifi encryption. I used it for about 20 minutes without any problems. That includes email, surfing the internet, and YouTube.

I too can tether the GT 10.1 with my HTC Thunderbolt using Wifi Tether, but am having trouble with the Samsung Droid Charge. Anybody get the Charge to tether successfully? TIA!

Easy Tether

During my recent probe to find the best way to tether my phone having access to all the settings i came across this little apk for the android phones which replaces the built in system.
Your phone must be rooted to use this file, i know some networks like sprint lockdown the tether options, this gets around that issue.
I dont know if its been posted here before or not, but i hope some of you guys may find it useful and the page is very useful info.

Try it on my note running midnote ICS 3.2. Doesn't work, my note freeze and have to reboot.

whats wrong with the tethering and portable hotspot setting in the wireless and networks... it is simple to use and works great..no root needed.... its on the stock rom...

If third party tethering app, then i say 'wireless tether' is better
It supports thethring via blutooth too, As well having mac security option.

Both my daughter's Macbook Air and my wife's Dell laptop have successfully connected wirelessly to my Galaxy Note and downloaded stuff from the Net. With H+ speed it is as quick as my ADSL+ connection at home!
It is so easy to setup ... Settings > Wireless and Network > Tethering and Portable hotspot. Make sure you choose a good password!
