WTF flash?? What am I doing wrong?? - Xoom General

Just got the jelly bean update and looked online for a 11.1 flash apk, since it doesn't show up in the play store anymore...whatever
I installed it, and tried my many popular and favorite sites that use flash, tried with the stock browser and dolphin , all the sites say to please install flash player..
I know flash won't be supported in jb, but no one said not working .. trust me I see no major differences from ics to jb ,EXCEPT flash not working.
I'm doing something wrong, right ?
I mean who would accept this

I am pretty sure that it won't work simply because they don't want it to. In the case of a lot of ICS stuff I have played with some are still supported and actively being developed, but they plain don't work for JB. Most go up well... But some won't.

Then why would anyone want jellybean ?? I played with it on the nexus 7 and now the Xoom, ICS was a huge improvement no doubt, but not jelly bean not even close.
So now I can't use flash , can't use amazon prime and tons of other sites .. really sad ,
Pathetic and a major mistake IMO
Just hope eos stays with keeping their ICS ROM up to date because it looks like I'm going to that

Sideloaded Flash works fine for me on all instances of JB (stock, EOS, CM10 experimental) for the following browsers:
Stock, Dolphin for Pad, Skyfire, Boat Browser.
Does not work with Dolphin HD any more since 8.6.0.

Flash works for me... You must be doing something wrong. Did you restart the browser after install or restart the xoom?

I preface this with, i dont code flash, BUT how is this web developers issues when adobe is claiming flash is alive and well for desktops? These days companies cant afford to provide 2 completely different web sites for desktop and mobile and on the desktop there are just too many things that can be done with flash that cant be done in html 5 and we wont even talk about the effort to convert even if they wanted too. This is really a web fragmentation issue that needs to be adressed soon.
I'll also add that not being able to set useragent in chrome or even reliably in stock browser is driving me nuts. I hate mobile sites on my tab.

i wish people would actually know what the hell they are talking about before they come out with stuff like ' adobe are crap, flash is crap, yadd yadda yadda'.. if these people had ever built a decent working website they would know that HTML5 is not the answer to everything and it is still very limited when compared to Flash.. thats just how it is, its no one fault.
the question we should be asking is how can dolphin implement flash fine and chrome/google cant/wont/dont?
flash works fine on chrome desktop, i just dont think they have activated yet on chrome beta.

adobe still support it, they just wont be updating it for mobile devices, BIG DIFFERENCE.

Strange, I have was checking The Verge with chrome for Android and the embedded YouTube video player works. Also the YouTube website, maybe chrome knows that YouTube is a video format and embeds a special player (HTML5).

Who is up in arms? Flash is old outdated and a resource hog. I'm glad they are making themselves obsolete.. and their software is bloated garbage. And support and update ain't much of a difference. No future browsers will have flash...unless you want to use old software in the coming years...
No where did I whine about it... talk to yourself about whining....

actually dolphin browser is using the same engine as the stock browser - that's why you get flash on dolphin too since you get it on the stock browser. and if i'm not mistaken dolphin browser is an extension of the stock browser, so code wise everything it should be almost the same except the UI and other additional features that makes dolphin unique.
Chrome is a totally diff browser - so flash needs to be supported in it I suppose in order to view flash sites in chrome for android.
thank you everyone for your response.

Chrome sucks!

Now with JB update, the main browser is chrome and is very slow slow slow and sometimes when I am playing html5 videos makes my system reboot, I know html5 is now and the future but a lot of web sites still use flash player. We still have the android browser but with the update now it does not synchronize anything. In my my opinion, asus tf300t is I nice device but for internet browsing is little bit frustrating. I tried dolphin that used to work fine with ICS, and now is slow.

While I'd hold off on saying it sucks outright, I will say that it leaves a whole lot to be desired. Chrome for Android is no where near as good as it's desktop big brother.
What I'm confused the most about is that they include it alongside their 4.1 updates, with it indented to become the users default browser, but it lacks some of the basic functionality of even the stock Android browser.
I am curious as to what you think is basic features? not bashing in any way...some need more than other.
i personally think Chrome is completely Fine. it does everything i need it to do and works well enough that i dont feel like i have to download or try any other browser out there.
however there is the occasion i need FLASH and have to use the stock browser.

I want it to be able to request, by default, the desktop version of websites, without me having to either specify it every time I load a new site or root and run any custom scripts.
For a device as capable as the TF300, and considering the stock browser has that function, I'd consider that a pretty basic feature. Until I see that little check box in the settings menu that allows me to "Always request desktop site", it's the stock browser for me.

Come on guys, did you not read my post?
"I want it to be able to request, by default, the desktop version of websites, without me having to either specify it every time I load a new site or root and run any custom scripts."
I do not want to unlock in order to root. Once there is a root exploit developed for 4.1.1 that maintains the locked boot-loader I'm all game to give the above options a try.
In the meantime though I'm still of the opinion that if the default browser can be programmed to request desktop versions of websites by default, there is absolutely no reason why Chrome can not be developed to do the same.
I agree it's silly that the old android browser would have features that chrome does not. Chrome can be unbearably slow on my pad. Google now as well.

Did i get what on ICS? The custom script for Chrome that is linked above? Yes I was using that while locked/rooted on ICS, but that's not the point of my complaint with Chrome.
There should be no reason that a feature like automatically requesting the desktop site in a tablet based browser should not be included, without the need to unlock/root/run custom scripts. It's just a lack of effort on the part of the Chome developers as far as I'm concerned.

Yes I am seeing that as well. I am pretty disappointed with chrome on this beast (hell it loading like aol did on my 386). I use Chrome everywhere else (galaxy nexus, razr maxx, my linux machine and my windows 7) and it blows all other browsers away - the sync is amazing when switching between devices. There has to be something coming soon that will get it back to where it belongs. Does anyone know if these chrome issues are related to JB running on tablets or is this a transformer thing. I love this tablet (bought it two nights ago lol) but without chrome working, it feels broken. Hope this gets handled soon. I am debating on trying out one or two more tablets before I fully commit (tf700t? I actually have no other ones on my radar-nothing seems exciting). Anyone know of anything i should check out before I commit?)

I then tried the method liked to by rumspringa9, again no joy.
Yes I changed permissions on the command line file. Might be that the new chrome version doesn't allow for the custom script to work.

I use JB on my SGS3, not much difference from ICS
Still I would like to have JB on my tab, so I flashed a CM10 based ROM, if on one hand it was easier to have status bar on top, like the phone, I didnt like the large soft buttons, they use too much screen space
So I stay in ICS until there is a Samsung leak

Does JB force the 'desktop' to be portrait mode, or is that only a Nexus 7 'thing'?
I usually use my Tab in portrait anyway (it seems more natural with the ~7" form factor) but I'd prefer to have the desktop orient to whichever way I happened to be holding the tablet when I exit an application.

If you change your DPI to 160 (the original value for the 7.7), CM10 goes back to Tablet mode (the default is 213 DPI, whih gives you the "phablet" mode introduced by the Nexus 7). I'm using it in this configuration for a long time now.

[RANT]I don't understand people who use a forum called xda DEVELOPERS and have an anti-development attitude. "This has lots of bugs and will never work", "they will never fix it", "Samsung knows it best", etc. We have a single developer for CM9 and CM10, who has bricked his own device irrecoverably, then got a new one to keep developing. Will there be bugs? Of course. Just like Samsung's ICS has bugs. But the developers for CM actually do listen to users, and try to fix whatever issue you may have (which is more than I can say about Samsung, since they introduce new bugs, like our WiFi on ICS, or even add a bricking option to an unbrickable phone, like the Galaxy S2 from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4).
If you don't support the active development being made by our fine members, you may find other forums where you won't even see that option. And where your comments won't be offensive to people who are doing their best to make your device more usable.[/RANT]

I've tried a handful of custom roms too. And I'd say KUDOS to all the Devs for their hardwork. But I'm still finding myself going back to stock ICS. Specially now that I've updated mine to the official ICS for my Tab's country/region.
With JB update, I'm still positive we'll be getting it.

No flash player?

I wanted to get the Nexus 7, my last Android device being my phone the Xperia Arc S. The ability to watch flash on android just did it for me to be honest, because I stream a lot of websites.
However now that Jelly Bean is out, it doesn't support flash anymore. I've heard the arguments "It doesn't matter, HTML5 is rolling out"- Yes, it's ROLLING out, many websites still use Flash and I would like to be able to use that. Is there no way at all to be able to install flash on a fresh Nexus 7 device at the moment?
Yes, just find the apk and sideload it.
Haven't tested it with 4.2,but there are still a couple browsers in Google Play that still support flash (as the stock Chrome browser does not).
Do understand that EVENTUALLY Android will update to a version that breaks compatibility with the Flash app. And when that happens nobody will be there to fix it, Google and Adobe have moved on.

I've read from loads of places that "theoretically" it should work, however I'm not too sure as I tried it out in a store and I couldn't get it to work. I loaded up Dolphin browser after installing the APK file and it didn't work
For some it may seem like a minor issue, however no flash is a deal breaker for me. It's one of the main reasons I left iOS and hopped aboard the Android train, as it allowed a no-restriction user experience

[APP] Dolphin HD Bowser with full Flash Support

This is the Dolphin Browser HD 8.5.1 and a working Flash Player apk.
Just install the Dolphin Browser first and than the Flash Player.
The Flash Player is also partly working in the stock "Internet Browser App" from Samsung!

Not sure what went wrong but I'm not able to get Flash working. I tried installing in the order you suggested then tried installing Flash first then Dolphin. In both cases Flash fails to function. Any ideas what might be happening?

Does it works for 10.1?
Or is it only for 7 and 8 inches?

Unfortunately no it does not currently work on the 10.1 the problem appears to be related to the houdini arm code translator as near as I've been able to determine (granted I'm no programmer). I've tried to use the steps used to enable Flash in 4.1.1 but that was unfortunately not successful. Hopefully someone will be able to figure this out.
I hope so. I brought the 10.1 thinking I'll be able to install flash

On an intel, 10.1" tab, flash works in Firefox
use last Android Adobe flash App from
http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html
Now, last one is:
Flash Player 11.1 for Android 4.0 (11.1.115.81)
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/...roid/11.1.115.81/install_flash_player_ics.apk
And use Firefox browser from market. Not internal, not Dolphin. Only Firefox seems to accept flash without native libs.
It's a bit sluggish and doesn't work in full screen, but at least something, right?

I was afraid to read that
I read in a spanish forum that the problem was with the intel core. Well, we'll have to wait and prey for someone to do some magic.

I tryed the firefox + flash combination at early september. Apparently it works, however, at least with my device, is it incredibly slow (e.g impossible to watch a video).
Anotehr browser which can handle flash is "Photon Flash Player". I guess they run flash remotely and stream the result to the browser. I wouldn't recommend it. The free version is full of ads whilst I don't trust a service which is being executed remotely.
Skyfire
Skyfire browser is working very fine with all of Android devices including samsung Tab 10.1. It supports flash and it can run whatever I throw at it.
I installed the latest version of Dolphin on my new T211 yesterday. Flash works great; on my previous "phone" I was using 8.5.1 because I thought otherwise I would lose flash; all for naught. I was going to stick to 8.5.1 except pinch to zoom didn't work (which is odd because it had previously worked for me). Turns out I was better off updating Dolphin, and enjoying the static address bar all along.
Figured I'd share.
