Chrome sucks! - Transformer TF300T General

Now with JB update, the main browser is chrome and is very slow slow slow and sometimes when I am playing html5 videos makes my system reboot, I know html5 is now and the future but a lot of web sites still use flash player. We still have the android browser but with the update now it does not synchronize anything. In my my opinion, asus tf300t is I nice device but for internet browsing is little bit frustrating. I tried dolphin that used to work fine with ICS, and now is slow.

While I'd hold off on saying it sucks outright, I will say that it leaves a whole lot to be desired. Chrome for Android is no where near as good as it's desktop big brother.
What I'm confused the most about is that they include it alongside their 4.1 updates, with it indented to become the users default browser, but it lacks some of the basic functionality of even the stock Android browser.

I am curious as to what you think is basic features? not bashing in any way...some need more than other.
i personally think Chrome is completely Fine. it does everything i need it to do and works well enough that i dont feel like i have to download or try any other browser out there.
however there is the occasion i need FLASH and have to use the stock browser.

I want it to be able to request, by default, the desktop version of websites, without me having to either specify it every time I load a new site or root and run any custom scripts.
For a device as capable as the TF300, and considering the stock browser has that function, I'd consider that a pretty basic feature. Until I see that little check box in the settings menu that allows me to "Always request desktop site", it's the stock browser for me.

Come on guys, did you not read my post?
"I want it to be able to request, by default, the desktop version of websites, without me having to either specify it every time I load a new site or root and run any custom scripts."
I do not want to unlock in order to root. Once there is a root exploit developed for 4.1.1 that maintains the locked boot-loader I'm all game to give the above options a try.
In the meantime though I'm still of the opinion that if the default browser can be programmed to request desktop versions of websites by default, there is absolutely no reason why Chrome can not be developed to do the same.

I agree it's silly that the old android browser would have features that chrome does not. Chrome can be unbearably slow on my pad. Google now as well.

Did i get what on ICS? The custom script for Chrome that is linked above? Yes I was using that while locked/rooted on ICS, but that's not the point of my complaint with Chrome.
There should be no reason that a feature like automatically requesting the desktop site in a tablet based browser should not be included, without the need to unlock/root/run custom scripts. It's just a lack of effort on the part of the Chome developers as far as I'm concerned.

I think its something that'll be coming.. I mean chrome for android hasn't had as long to develop as the stock aosp browser has.
Also, I meant root on ics. It was possible without unlocking. I am rooted but locked.

Yes I am seeing that as well. I am pretty disappointed with chrome on this beast (hell it loading like aol did on my 386). I use Chrome everywhere else (galaxy nexus, razr maxx, my linux machine and my windows 7) and it blows all other browsers away - the sync is amazing when switching between devices. There has to be something coming soon that will get it back to where it belongs. Does anyone know if these chrome issues are related to JB running on tablets or is this a transformer thing. I love this tablet (bought it two nights ago lol) but without chrome working, it feels broken. Hope this gets handled soon. I am debating on trying out one or two more tablets before I fully commit (tf700t? I actually have no other ones on my radar-nothing seems exciting). Anyone know of anything i should check out before I commit?)

Well I finally unlocked, installed Hydro and then tried applying the custom command line linked to by SpeedNess above...no joy.
I then tried the method liked to by rumspringa9, again no joy.
Yes I changed permissions on the command line file. Might be that the new chrome version doesn't allow for the custom script to work.
Oh well, back to the stock browser and Browser2Ram for the time being.

Things I hate about the new browser (2.2)

I know there are many great features but I have 3 things that I hate
1) If u open the browser now, the homepage doesn't display, instead it shows the last website
2) I hate that if u download something, it doesn't take you to the downloads
3) Also now you can't double click a flash object and isolate it
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I feel your pain, the isolation was one of my favorite Parts. Any way to have like it was?
Android .apk's are supposed to all be forward compatible, you might try installing the browser apk from 2.1
I hate how I can't watch my flash tv shows on megavideo because it says its missing a plugin and an ad takes over and redirects my page so I can't even go to the site.
Thus, I am stuck on cm6. (not like that's a bad thing though)
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
the new browser (or is the new flash) handles taps incorrectly... on 2.1 i could tap the seek bar and fast forward as intended. on 2.2 tapping ANYWHERE on the flash object (typically a streaming video player) causes the video to play/pause, just as if i pressed right in the middle of that object... horrible
I cannot use Google Analytics with the new browsers. When I click on the calendar drop down, it just displays a blank instead of the calendar. It was working before.
You guys could install a different flash version.
Press and hold on video and let go.. On top od where the video box will be a bar with a rectangle to isolate... Tee hee I know what u mean.. I was the same way till I found out by accident.. Is there a way to download on our interent embedded movies or video on websites like a pluggin?
Edit: sometimes only works if you turn ur phone sideways.. Well foe me I have to or it wont work.. But isolates video with option to full screen..

Have to say, CM6 probably had the best "stock" browser experience. What I miss from CM6 are the 8 tabs and its flash integration. Other than that they're about the same for me.

OMG the default browser's editor is an abomination!

Purely pathetic. Freshman CS students code better for homework assignments. Gimme a break!!

I GOT COMPARED TO A FIVE YEAR OLD ON THE INTERNET! BETTER BUST OUT THE BIG WORDS!
I kid.
Anyway, he's talking about the typing lag in the default browser. And, yeah, it is pretty bad. But it's manageable. The default browser has too many things that I love to dump it for the one flaw.
To the OP directly, a lot of it has to do with XDA, too. It's bad on most sites, but XDA with the 2010 theme takes the cake for slowest website to view on the Transformer. It was a lot worse before the 3.1 update. Take a little time and do it better yourself, too, if you really feel that way.
There is no editor in the browser. The textarea you are writing to is part of the website. It's sluggish on this forum and probably that caused you to comment like that.

Ok whatever. When I acces this site with Opera no problems. When I access any other ste it screwsup.
Above typos are uncorrect4d.
Got it?
Opera works wonders with Javascript-enabled sites, especially in modern forums. Other browsers fail in this regard, possibly due to the lack of optimization used by Opera's team. However, the problem with this one is that the devs need Honeycomb source code to optimize Flash content, so we're stuck with a Flash-less Opera for tablets.
Turn off flash. It may speed up the browser substantially.
It's a shame we can't report posts anymore using the report buton.
And so isn't that the beauty of the system, that one can so easily substitute another browser for the stock browser? I mean, seriously: Opera works better for that particular use. Awesome! Firefox works better with my company's SharePoint site. Bonus! Dolphin works well with some particular sites I visit. Cool!
Complaining that the stock (browser, or whatever) doesn't work in a particular instance only makes sense if there were no other options. But then, of course, you'd probably be talking about an Apple product.
Indeed, the beauty of Android: Choice. Why settle for stock when you've got a whole group of alternatives, each with their own unique strengths and weaknesses. You may not be satisfied with one particular browser, but you will be if you use multiple ones catered for a specific need.

You are the one that came into this forum calling things pathetic, posting vague and useless information that leaves us no way to determine what you are talking about. If you expect to be met with respect, then perhaps you should calm down.
Next, by "editor" I am assuming you mean the keyboard. The ASUS keyboard does really suck, but guess what? Android is awesome and you can switch the keyboard. There are literally over a dozen keyboards you can choose from. Thumb Keyboard, Swype, stock Android keyboard, etc all work great for me.
If you mean the browser is laggy, then switch to another browser. Try Dolphin HD or Opera or Fennec. Yay options!
I believe all of us like options, but having good browser in a first place would be better. now I'm using opera mini to browse forums. fast n smooth.
-_- browser's editor...rofl.....xda really needs to add a 'Report' button...
You guys are really something - this guy has a very valid complaint even if he doesn't have the best handle on computer-related terms. You're all just looking for an excuse to hassle someone, even though I found his description weird I immediately knew he was referring to the browser lag.
And to those asking why we don't just move to another browser, because the stock Android browser would be, by far, the best mobile browser around if it weren't for the keyboard lag.
Yeah, it's nice that you have choice with Android but that's not what this complaint is about. This is about the stock browser that ships with Honeycomb, which is amazing by almost all accounts, is almost unusable because of this typing lag - unless you purely consume content in the internet and don't ever post anything.

But this is yet another stopgap measure, like using a third-party browser merely so you can type properly.
Tapatalk is a great app, but it was designed for phones. It's a waste of the 1280x800 screen on the Transformer.
These suggestions will work great to hold us over until a fix is released, but none of these excuse or dismiss the browser lag problem.

Same thing here. Saw it first thing this morning. Downloaded from market. After typing in a search, never loads web content. UI is there, just no web content. (Currently running evervolv 4.0.3 ICS ROM).

Works great on my Nexus S running ICS but cant get it in my Galaxy Tab 10.1 running 3.1, wont even try to install.
Lovely browser though, its streets ahead of the normal one.
The app requires the LEVEL 14 API.. So not sure when the great devs here can get it to work with GINGERBREAD.
I have it running on my epic 4g with cm9 but its a no go on the evo. The UI looks great, I like the functionality of the tabs. Look forward to playing with it on my transformer
Darn, and here I was thinking I could break free of miren... Anyone know if intent works properly on this one? (i.e. you open a Youtube link and it gives you the option to load it in the Youtube app)
Didn't work well for me
I tried it out on my Evo running Drew's P7 build. Uninstalled it after about 5 minutes. It takes up 50 MB of internal storage, wouldn't move to SD, the keyboard was really laggy when typing URLs, the page wouldn't display, and when I went into app management, it was using a whopping 81 MB of RAM.
Maybe I'll revisit this later, but for now it isn't right for my device.

I preface this with, i dont code flash, BUT how is this web developers issues when adobe is claiming flash is alive and well for desktops? These days companies cant afford to provide 2 completely different web sites for desktop and mobile and on the desktop there are just too many things that can be done with flash that cant be done in html 5 and we wont even talk about the effort to convert even if they wanted too. This is really a web fragmentation issue that needs to be adressed soon.
I'll also add that not being able to set useragent in chrome or even reliably in stock browser is driving me nuts. I hate mobile sites on my tab.

actually dolphin browser is using the same engine as the stock browser - that's why you get flash on dolphin too since you get it on the stock browser. and if i'm not mistaken dolphin browser is an extension of the stock browser, so code wise everything it should be almost the same except the UI and other additional features that makes dolphin unique.
Chrome is a totally diff browser - so flash needs to be supported in it I suppose in order to view flash sites in chrome for android.
thank you everyone for your response.

So i've been listening to binaural beats all night, and i've come to a hopeful conclusion regarding Adobe discontinuing Flash Player in mid-August.
My first Android device was the Motorola Flipout, before moving to the Nexus S and the Galaxy Note. I've had Flash on all three, but since the Flipout was only updateable to 2.1, there was an unofficial port that worked just as well as the official version on the Market.
So, with the Nexus 7 being our first pure Jelly Bean tablet (and the fact that i'll sorely miss the perfect Flash support on my HP Touchpad i sold to buy the Nexus), would it be worth investing time and effort into porting Flash Player to future Android versions?
We all know that HTML5 is more versatile, and certainly more open, but Flash is, of course, still the dominant medium of interactive content, and i can waste days watching silly flash loops, no HTML5 versions for those
Meh, I don't care. I use Opera Mobile as my browser, so as long as the APK for flash player still installs (which it will), then Opera Mobile will continue to work with flash, as it doesn't use the Android browser engine at all..
Infact, Opera make be the Flash lifeline, as it works really well at present, and it's one of the few TRUE browsers on Android, that isn't just a skin on the included Webkit browser.
Doesn't chrome have flash built in?

That's because Opera renders pages on a remote server, or at least it used to. Haven't used it on a mobile device since Windows Mobile, haha

Survey says that the Chrome browser built for the Nexus 7 doesn't support flash player when it's installed using the apk. The AOSP browser should, in theory, support it, though.

You're confusing opera mobile with opera mini.

There's two Operas? Well, duly noted

There are at least 5 topics about flash where it has already been answered.
Flash is CONFIRMED working on the Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus on Jelly Bean. Flash works on jelly bean.
On August 15th flash will no longer be able to be downloaded from the market buy you can simply install it from a backed up APK.
Chrome DOES NOT support Flash and never will.
Firefox, ICS Browser+, Dolphin, and others support flash and jelly bean and work perfectly.
While it works it crashes a lot on the N7 with Opera, Dolphin or any other browser i tried.
Questions go in the Q&A section

Is it able to play swf files directly in those browsers, or does it download them to the filesystem?

Yes, but swf files can either be embedded in a page, or can be viewed by accessing the file directly in a browser. I'm not referring to Youtube or Amazon, those obviously work, i'm talking about small swf files, like this.

Some browsers, instead of playing the file in the browser, will download it to the filesystem instead, and i've found that it depends on the version of Android. It did it in 2.1 and 2.2, but not 2.3 and 4.0.
