OK, I understand the mechanism, and I can easily transfer files from my Nexus to my Note using Share -> Bluetooth. The two devices are paired. The trouble is that the confirmation dialog that I get on the Note when I send from my Nexus never appears on my Nexus when I try to send from my Note. The Note just tells me it failed after a few seconds.
Is there something special I need to do on the Nexus to allow it to accept BT files?

I was transferring files from my galaxy nexus to the nexus 4 and i found that if you are connected to wifi while sending a file through bluetooth the wireless will drop out completely until you turn the bluetooth off.
I have tried this with a couple of other phones that can send bluetooth files to the nexus 4 and it is the same every time. It can scan and detect the wifi however it will not connect to it.
Does anyone else have this problem? Or can anyone replicate it?
This was using the JOP40C and using the stock kernel. I have not tried it with franco's kernel.
Hello I'm new to the world of android but I was left to believe that all android devices had the ability to use WiFi direct but after getting the nexus 7 in the post yesterday I spent much of the night trying to get the nexus to send video to my TV and files to my Samsung galaxy s3 but all with no luck. they connected together but they just won't send files or video plus the WiFi direct icon in the drop down options is no longer there. Do I have a faulty nexus 7 or dose the nexus not have the** ability to use WiFi direct and if so will there be a fix for this problem? I no its a lot of questions but I'm stuck and I use WiFi direct a lot and I need this to work on my nexus 7 . so if anyone can help me I would be extremely grateful for your help. Thank you
AFAIK, the Nexus 7 doesn't support adhoc wifi, something to do with wpa_supplicant.
Nexus 7 needs software to support the this. Samsung wrote their own for S beam. Don't know of any third party apps that are compatible with s beam.
Check out https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.j4velin.wifidirect for one that should work.
Thanks for your help people but I have fund a fix for my problem of sending video to my TV from my nexus 7 . I remembered I payed for a app from Google play about a year ago called imediashare I had forgot I had it I did not even install it on my new phone. But last night I installed it on my nexus 7 and to my joy it worked I can now stream mp4 and avi video to my TV. I'm still looking for a way to send and receive files using WiFi direct on the nexus 7 but it I find one I'll post it here. If someone else finds a way to do it please let me know here thanks
I've been trying to transfer files between my nexus 10 and my galaxy nexus, but with no luck. This is what did:
(1) turn on bluetooth on both devices, and pair
(2) go to ES file browser, long press the (plan text) file to bring up menu, then select share -> bluetooth --> ok
(3) Got a message on the notification bar saying that the bluetooth was not successful.
I am able to use my bluetooth keyboard with both devices so at least that part works. I searched this forum but I was not able find any posting on this topic; any advice on how to do bluetooth file transfer is most appreciative.

I think its a hit or miss with Bluetooth transfer. First I had the same issue as you, but when I tried later it worked without problem. I know the Bluetooth on the nexus isn't 100%, so might he a problem on that end (haven't tested the n10 Bluetooth extensively).

Thanks. Could you describe exactly what you did to successfully perform a bluetooth file transfer?
(also, an off-topic question: How is CM10.1 working out for your gnex?)
Depends on what u are trying to transfer, tried transferring an apk from my laptop to my N10 but I couldn't, transferring an apk from n10 to s2 worked tho

I've been trying to send files to my Samsung Galaxy SIII Mini via NFC, but they never transfer. Also when I try to receive files from my SIII Mini I never receive them my n7.
I've got NFC switched on & they detect each other when I touch them, but they won't transfer.
What am I doing wrong?

go to settings > wifi > more settings > uncheck samsung beam> re-try
sending files over nfc using samsung beam only work with other samsungs switching it off uses standard nfc bluetooth transport "standard nfc"
samsung beam uses nc-wifi-direct
you could try downloading "superbeam" from market, its a great little app that lets you send files using the nfc-wifi-direct method without both devices being samsung

Use a USB cable or send files over WiFi using "Air droid" app.

That's like saying "take the train" to someone that has car trouble and can't get to work--not very helpful. What if they need to use bluetooth due to lack of USB cable or a wifi-capable computer? I know it's not probable, but the bluetooth capability is there and should be able to be used if desired, even if it's not the fastest data-transfer method.
I too, have the same problem, though just two days ago I was able to send files.
Can't help you much as I got Windows 8 and Ubuntu.
But I had this kind of problems often on Windows 8, I had to unpair (from device and phone) then pair them again, each time I had to switch from Linux to Windows.
Anyway, to send files by Bluetooth from windows, try this:
Right-Click on the file
Then Send to
And choose Bluetooth Device
I never opened the storage card of my nexus from bluetooth on my PC, I think the connection is not very stable.
