I managed to root it, installed the APK version of xRecovery, installed xRecovery from there but I can't seem to be able to actually get into xrecovery, flashtool's reboot into xrecovery option is greyed out.
Furthermore, the Eclair version this x8 is running is outdated:
Baseband 06 with 2.0.1.A.0.47 while the latest one is 2.0.2.A.0.24, I tried flashing the latest one for this baseband using flashtool with the files from this post but it didn't stick, phone was still running 2.0.1.A.0.47 after the process was completed. SEUS says the phone is running the latest version.
*EDIT* Success, the APK installer wasn't working properly, so I did a manual install and now xRecovery is working *EDIT*
Seriously u should first update to 2.1.1.A.0.6 first which is the latest version..coz most of app here required latest baseband (15) and latest build to work properly

I tried with PC Companion and SEUS, both say that the current version is the latest, and I don't know if I can just flash the newer version in using flashtool.

You don't have to use fastboot but lg updater for official 2.1 . Then kdz updater which installs 2.1 with fastboot and then you can install custom roms via fastboot

No: just grab the KDZ updater and install fastboot.kdz. Dunno where to find it exactly, propably at the OpenSwift page. Try the ROM reference. Anyway, after that you have fastboot. BTW I've read somewhere that GB by pcfighter seems to be pretty good. I can't test for ya, because I'm buzy on a ROM and can't get adb to work

I am not sure how to have it updated on OFF mode. Do you have the steps for it?

[ROOT] XPERIA PRO MK16i ICS 4.0.4 [ LOCKED BOOTLOADER ][UPDATED]

STEPS
1. FIND ANY 4.0.3 kernel , try downloading kernel file from NEO section
[before flashing : make USB debugging , unknown sources - ON ]
2. Flash it with flashtool
3. But your phone will show blackscreen (because locked bootloader - mismatched kernel ) but that doesnt mean you cant connect through ADB
4. So download DOOMLORD 's easy root toolkit for ics
5. switch on the phone (after removing battery and putting it back in )
6. connect to pc
7. open toolkit you downloaded
8. when the key leds light up - press enter in toolkit and it'll do the rest
9. after rooting - flash 4.0.4 kernel from the 4.0.4 firmware ( its available in xda now)
there you go -a rooted pro
I know that this method exits and most knows but for XPERIA PRO ( MK16i )
there's no kernel or ftf (4.0.3) anywhere as it wasn't released.
thanks for those who created the toolkit and posted a the firmwares
UPDATED : About the toolkit in the link
The toolkit provided have a 1.15 busybox ver , which is very old (have permission setting problems) , so please download the gingerbread toolkit (by the same guy) in which there is a much newer busybox and replace the file inside "files/" in the toolkit folder . you can also put v3.1 su binary for segfault fixes
OR just copy the files attached "files.rar"

Yes it does work . The phone shuts down after fully loading (at xperia logo - ie when key lights up) but thats all the toolkit needs as it pushes files and reboots.
And yes dont forget to close flashtool and pc companion , if it runs in background it wont work

This sounds wonderful. Thank you.
But if you dont mind, how do I flash back 4.0.4 kernal? Which file is it?
Skickat från min MK16i via Tapatalk 2
Thanks for the tip! Worked like a charm for me (bootloader still locked )
If anyone wants to try, I flashed the 4.0.3 kernel file from Neo/V topic (4.1.A.0.562):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26798415&postcount=141
Then extracted the 4.0.4 kernel from original .ftf file (got from official ICS update topic), flashed it and restarted the phone. Root Root!!

You'll have to download the full ftf , then flash it with flashtool by excluding the system in the flashtool . ie just flash the kernel only ( also check "no verification")
here's the link

thanks to Jozenik and xbed for the ftf

Thank you for explaining. I got hold of my blob_fs folder when I updated so I will try to get it from there.
I am afraid of ending up with wrong layout of keyboard if I mess up with exclude system..

The link I posted is having Europe keyboard layout , there's also another link which have another layout in the same topic by Jozinek try checking it out. And I meant to exclude the system only because you'll have already flashed this FTF and rooted it , so if the layout BALTIC (Europe or any other , other than africa i think ) works for you then you dont need to worry about wrong key layout.
I hope that helps
