Hello.
Not really willing to root my Nexus 7, just wondering if a small usb card reader along with a USB OTG cable will work, with a non rooted Nexus 7?

I was about to post the very link that KUNITZ22 just posted. Just in case you don't know the developers forum is very strictly policed in terms of what can be posted. So if you want to start a thread with a query about it you are best off doing it in here (Nexus 7 Q&A)
And use search next time please...

USB OTG
How to enable USB OTG?
I flashed over a CM10 Kang which says that enables USB OTG.
But I cant get a USB to connect.
I have a rooted device with superSU and I am using StickMount app.
You think the OTG cable could be damaged or something?
Regards

It's easy, the only stinky part is you have to wipe your Nexus in order to unlock the bootloader (it's a security measure). The instructions are very easy to follow, but if you've never done anything like it you will have to spend a lot of time downloading various things like the Android SDK. Expect to spend at least an hour if you're a total newbie.

All I can tell you is that I rooted, installed [Root] StickMount from the market, plugged in my OTG cable from Newegg with a Fat formatted stick plugged in. It offered to open StickMount, I said yes. SuperSU asked to allow root, I said yes. StickMount mounted it (at a strange path under /sdcard/usbmount or something) and I was able to browse to it with ES File Explorer.
Should be that simple. Tap the notification to unmount and unplug it.

If you are still looking for a way to use USB devices, now there's a app on the Google play store to use without rooting your Nexus 7.
It's called "Nexus Media Importer" from HomeySoft
Here's the link
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.homeysoft.nexususb.importer&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5ob21leXNvZnQubmV4dXN1c2IuaW1wb3J0ZXIiXQ..
ed.:
NON-ROOTED
Like suloch said "Nexus Media Importer" from HomeySoft works!
Tried it with a 32GB FAT USB-Stick, working good.
Couldn't find out how to show all data, but it showed me Pics, Video, Audio and Docs.
I was able to play a movie from the stick and there is an option for copying it to internal storage.
You can also unmount within the app
It didnt show the stick in ES Explorer...
Ohh, it seems you cant copy something from the Nexus7 to the USB-Stick :cyclops:
Thats stupid!
As Stupid as having no HDMI out...
But maybe the app for the USB-Stick will evolve...

My computer does not read my kindle fire as a usb mass storage device anymore. I just installed the ICS gedeROM and all is great except for that little detail. I am a noob in need of help, would someone please help get the proper drivers for this. Also, it recognizes my Kindle as a Galaxy Nexus, but it can not mount the kindle as a drive and therefore I can´t transfer any files. Please hlep me! Thanks!!!

When you plug it in, you should see a usb symbol in the notification bar. Click it and enable the usb. Also, uninstall the drivers for your Kindle Fire. That worked for me.

Works now!

Thanks a lot Josepho 1997 and Fast Mikey 1969! Apparently it was the usb debbuging feature that was not letting me mount my drive. Now I am going through the painful process of installing all my apps. I will also see what to do with the drivers that came with the Kindle Fire Utility software. I am such a noob that I don´t even know where the drivers are stored, maybe under c:/program files/android? I know I can check them through devices and printers and maybe look for one specifically on my computer or the web. Thanks a lot for all your help!
Do yourself a favor and buy Titanium Backup Pro if you plan on flashing more roms. WELL worth the price.

do this..in 99% of the cases this should work..dont have your kindle fire connected to pc while doing this..
goto settings>>storage>>three dots on top right of the screen(more options)>>USB computer connection>>select mass storage..
reboot and connect your kindle fire to pc..if u ever run AOKP ICS roms dont search for this option..aokp roms dont have this option in storage option..u will have to flash a different rom(mostly cm9) and select mass storage for usb connection and revert back to aokp rom without wiping data in recovery..
click thanks if this works..
Sooo i was wondering, i want a good tablet that i can also use to download big files from torrents...
But, what i want to know is, can i plug in a usb flash drive into my nexus 7 using an adapter, and download torrent files or normal files directly to the usb flash drive??
please answer
Dont see why not...
Theoretically, yes.
You need to be rooted, have a USB OTG cable, and use StickMount.
When you download the torrent, just set the download directory to the external drive and you're done.
Peace,

Can anyone else confirm this?
and does this only works if downloading from utorrent or any other kind of download?
BTW, does any adapter work or it has to be an OTG cable? or any usb adapter will work?
Yes it works....but mounting the pendrive for longer duration may damage your tablet.

You can try with any, but it is recommended to get a Micro USB to USB OTG cable, such as:
This one here
Easy as that buddy
And you can store anything on your tablet onto a hard drive/USB drive

A custom rom such as the current cm10.1 with a otg cable should do you just fine. No stickmount needed.

I get that...
From reading this thread, I think posters have confirmed parts of it (downloading to a stick with the OTG cable, being able to download to the drive w/ uTorrent, etc. The only thing not confirmed is with your specific setup (stock rom). It's possible no one has that exact configuration to be able to confirm that. Seems to me it's worth investing a buck or two in a cable to find that out.
In any event, good luck with your quest. I hope it works for you.
One problem...
The problem is that not all OTG cables are compatible with the Nexus 7.
The ROM isn't a problem, provided you have root access.
You can download to a flash drive, and if not just copy it to the flash drive when download completed.
But, we can't guarantee it, not without using a confirmed cable, which yours isn't.
Try it, and report back and add it ot the list of confirmed OTG cables working with the nexus 7
Peace,
shandy1996
Thanks for the answer, i'm going to paraguay at the next month cause prices here in brazil are ridiculous, and them i'm going to see if it works ^^
Sooo, if the OTG cable work, and flash drive is correctly detected, is there an option in utorrent to download directly to it? and if i download something that isn't a torrent, what would be the best downloader to use that have this function to download directly to flash drive?
Btw: how much time do you think nexus 7 will hold on to the newest games? like the dead trigger 4 etc.
bump?
No it does not. I tried to do that and the speed when a torrent is downloaded directly to the stick is about 1b/sec. If you download normal files it works but not torrent, at least ttorrent and atorrent do not work.

Uploaded 2 pictures, basically click on the Driver Installation Guide
Then follow the steps. When picking a driver, pick the RAW drivers. I tried the first two and didnt work for me.. at least on my Windows 8 setup, (it did when I had 7).
This is also a toolkit if you want to root your phone which was what I was doing at the time lol :good:

Is this phone problem?

Windows 8 Pro 64 Bit
Samsung SSD 840 Pro 256GB
i7-3770K
8GB DDR3

Well, unspecified is really not helpful when trying to find the problem...
Have you tried another USB port? What driver do your use to connect to your phone? At which file does the transfer break off? Have you tried skipping that if it's not important?
Also consider using some backup tool instead of manually copy/pasting the phones content.

Try to install drivers manually. My phone always copies files with USB debugging. Just tap Build Number about 10 times in About phone in Settings and go to Developer Options and enable USB debugging. When you plug in your phone to the computer and try transferring a file, it should work.
This is why I don't like the Nexus 4, it doesn't have an sdcard slot.

After you plug in the OTG cable, use the Root Explorer app (or a similar one) to navigate to /usbdisk. If that directory doesn't exist, use the StickMount app from the Play Store.

try with another otg cable. not all are compatible. maybe you have an incompatible one which would explain why none are detected.

you can determine if this is the case if you *don't* see any kernel log messages (use the command "dmesg" or "dmesg | tail -n 20" in a root shell) that describe a new usb device being plugged in.
