I noticed when I pause transformers at 8:48, the normal view looks normal, but when I click the little button on the top right hand corner to expand, I can only see "ransformer" out of transformers. It cuts off the sides a lot.
Does this happen with every video?
The screen is small as it is, I don't want to go smaller still.
Is there anyway to fix the ratio somehow?
Sorry total noob when it comes to videos.
Thanks.

There is no "stretch" option for videos in the Movies and TV app, only a zoom function. Rather than distort the video, the video is displayed in its original aspect ratio, which is wider than the Nexus 7 screen.

So this is something that has to do with the Movies & TV App. Phew. Atleast we can count on Netflix and internally stored movies.

^ True that .. what sucks is that I can play the transformers movie on my htc design over the 4g network. It's smoother , LOOKS BETTER and shows the entire screen with no cut offs.

Hello,
I was just wondering if it was possible for all youtube videos to play true fullscreen on the evo. Well, something like the iphone video resizing for all youtube videos. Is that possible?
Thanks
Turn your evo sideways in the youtube app.

I know that but some videos don't play totally fullscreen on the evo. The iphone has an option to make any video fit 100 percent to scale. Is there a way for the evo to do that
Oh I know what your talking about. Nope can't do that.

Its lame, but you can get the same result by actually going to view the video within the browser itself.
Just clico on hq and its full screen

Thats because the videos are 4x3, and you are watching them on a 16x9 screen. 16x9 videos will be full screen when you click the HQ button. 4x3 videos wont because that would be stretching the video and make it look awful.

It always astounds me how so many people would rather the video be stretched and distorted than have the black borders on the sides. Eh? To each their own…

lol me too. My best friend runs his PC to his tv and doesn't use the proper resolution so everything ends up stretched. He isn't even aware and doesn't seem to notice that everyone is extra fat, drives me nuts....
FWIW, the Evo's screen is actually 5:3 ratio, so almost any video content will need to be stretched or have some kind of black bars. Apparently the YouTube app doesn't support stretch.

Right? Almost no one in my family watches actual HD tv on our 50" plasma. It's such a waste IMO, and when I ask why they aren't watching the show in HD, they ask what the difference is and say they don't notice that the picture is stretched. Half the time, they say they thought they were watching HDTV. Or they say they don't care.
Seriously. There are 5 people living in my house, and I'm the only one who notices that standard definition looks terrible. WTF?
As for the black bars, some people think they're not seeing the entire frame of the video if their entire screen isn't filled. My dad used to insist on buying full screen versions of movies because he was convinced that the black bars in wide screen movies meant that the picture was being cut off, and he was only seeing half of it. As soon as I found out the real difference, I stopped watching full screen movies completely, but may dad still isn't convinced. Oh, well... What 'cha gonna do?
Where can I download some movies that actually fit the screen, im ok with widescreen v its just the other ones that look like a box those are to small

Look for movies with resolutions at or above 1280×800.

I don't think XDA condones piracy. You can always convert your own movies with Handbreak.
720p movies should be perfect for it (1280×720).
There is only 80 pixels difference, which will result in minimal black orders if you don't stretch.
With the GT been wide screen display it would be perfect if you are viewing movies that are in 1:78:1 or 1:85:1 aspect ratio which will have tiny black bars on the top and bottom. And then there are also 2:40:1 or 2:35:1 which will have black bars on top and bottom. watching a movie on the 10.1 is much better then a IPAD2. IPAD 2 is 4:3 screen..... The black bars will be much larger on a IPAD2 then on a 10.1. The only good thing about the IPAD 2 has over the 10.1 if a movie is in fool screen........
if you download an app called rockplayer lite, it will allow you to stretch any video resolution to full screen. It does a decent job and allows you to view videos not meant for your tablet. It also allows you to view some videos not supported in the stock player.
In this phone comparison I saw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6NKFjrwOSE), at 1.06, it shows that the N4 crops some of game's screen's left & right. I can tell this is due to the soft keys taking up space.
So, subtracting the soft keys, lets say horizontal pixel count is 1270 (its much less IRL). That means in a 16:9 aspect ratio, the vertical pixel count is 714.
So I'm wondering, do the soft keys disappear when watching video and other games? I don't have a N4 yet to check. If the soft keys pernamently take up that space, does that mean all HD 16:9 video content will not play a minimum of full screen 720p (HD) on screen?... Thus would it correct to say the N4 doesn't play videos (i.e. youtube) in HD?
The buttons do go away for pretty much all video players. It does play video in 720p. For other kind of app, it really depends on the Dev.

The nexus 4's display is actually 5:3 ratio, so even when the onscreen buttons are hidden, there are still thin black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.

Is it possible to have more control of the HDMI output?
For example crop lower part (home button area) to get 16:9 ratio which is good for movies and XBMC as well as several games.
I also want to force certain resolution such as 720p or 1080p etc. I have some problems with one of my TV and I think it could help to manually set resolution.
Would this be possible either with an app or changes in rom or even kernel?
I can't believe I am the only one that would like this option. I'm quite surprised there wasn't more control built in from the beginning.

Custom ROM's can do this (usually called Expand Desktop)
Sv: HDMI control
So no need for kernel change then?
Can u possibly name one of the custom roms supporting this feature?

Currently the nexus 10 just mirrors what is on the screen... Expand desktop just takes away status and navbar... Still 16:10... I am hoping that Google puts out an update that scales everything to 1080p or at least 16:9 so it could take advantage of 4k tvs... We'll see

It doesn't need a custom kernel, because the Play Store manages to get proper aspect ratio, without borders, on stuff you buy from Google. (Try it on the free content that comes with the device).
Now, if only it were documented how to do it, so third-party players could.

Extended desktop is also 16:10, what we need is to scale to 16:9 at least when playing a video with any app and at the moment we get 16:10 with everything (black borders in both sides) but the Google play movies. That one is the only app scaling a true 16:9...
This 16:10 **** makes the Nexus 10 a stupid video player.
Come on Google. Give us 16:9 with video apps!!!!

Supposedly MXplayer is going to be implementing the same thing google does with hdmi in their next update... At least that's what they tell me
+1
It's really irritating to play videos on the big screen and having the black boxes to the right and left.
Hope this gets fixed in future updates. No screens receiving hdmi from a tablet will be 16:10?
Where did anyone hear about MX player coming up with a fix for this - sounds interesting

Got one of those m-hdmi to normal HDMI adapters, it works great but I was wondering if the tn7 can out put higher than the 1280x800 the notes screen is to the TV? Or does it just detect and output the highest Res any way? Also does anyone know how to make the image fit the whole screen? I've got bars on the sides and top/bottom. First time I've used a tabs HDMI out =/

At the moment, you'll only get 1080p output if you watch a 1080p video. I was really hoping they were going to add Console Mode with full 1080p output with the 4.4 update, but alas... nope!
As for the image not fitting the TV, the tablet's display is actually 16:10 at 1280x800 and not 16:9 at 1280x720, so the image doesn't quite fit. It's kinda stupid since even my old Acer A500 tablet had a 16:10 screen but adjusted the output to fit 16:9. Long story short, though, is that it is what it is, and there's not really anything that can be done besides hoping and waiting for Nvidia to iron it out (or for a dev to fix it with a custom ROM some day).

If you don't want the bars on either side of the screen, you need to roll back to the original 4.2.2 firmware. Using that firmware, if you use a movie player like MX Player, when a film is playing, pinch to 'zoom' in on the film. As you do so the the edge of the film will disappear off the edge of the tablet's screen, but it will zoom in to fit the edges of the TV's screen, if you see what I mean. You will also find playback under 4.2 much smoother, whereas now you may experience micro stutters as though the movie is dropping frames or running at less than 24fps. If you search for Tegra Note Connectivity you'll find a thread I made with more info. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2566828
Sadly 4.3 and 4.4 broke this rather cool zooming feature.
