I thought we could benefit from having a stupid questions thread here in the S4 Q&A section. This thread is for those who have what they may feel is a stupid or very simple question. Please read through the forum threads and use the search first. Lets all work together to give answers where we can without speculating. If you don't know, don't answer. If you do, let's get these stupid questions out there and answered!
Remember, the only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask.
Any flaming will be reported. All XDA rules apply so read up.
Props to @lumin30 and @ShadyAce80 for setting this up in the S 4G and S3 forums where I first found them. Cheers!
First stupid question, why do we have a stupid question thread? We are all genius's here. Nah, just kidding
It is alway good to have a "no flame" "safe" thread. Thanks for starting it--:good:
The only stupid question is the one that never got asked!
I am giving a thanks also.
I've been lurking here for a couple years, having had a Galaxy Nexus up until now and just used the toolkit cuz I was scared of the more complicated stuff.
Got an S4 this week and really wanted to get an AOSP rom on it, so the last two days I've spent reading and reading and finally getting the guts to flash CM 10.1. Its working fine, just a couple small things I've noticed, but I have a dumb question....
The first time I attempted to flash CM, I ran a backup and then tried a zipped backup in CWM. So when I flashed CM and loaded it, it said I had like 3GB left. So I deleted ALL data/caches and deleted backups in CWM, thinking it would clear everything off, but now I still only have 6ish GBs of storage left. With the stock ROM I have just over 9GB I think.
Is there anywhere else I should be checking to clear out useless data on the internal memory? I would've thought clearing everything in CWM would've got it, but it doesn't seem to have.

This is where I show my inexperience.
With cwm 6.0.3.2 I did from the menu:
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Wipe dalvik cache
That first one should be the format, right? Or is there another one I missed?

first, make sure you have a backup and your rom/gapps on a micro sd card. thats my soapbox
wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, format system, format /data.
flash rom/gapps, reboot.
I will send many to this thread...

I have a question about trying to get this Recovery rom on my phone. Also I'm posting all this here because for whatever reason I'm not allowed to post in the development forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2291956
I already put CASUAL on my phone by following this;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297900
So anyways, my question is, I've downloaded all 3 files and parts of the directions really confuse me. namely direction #2;
2) using a root file manager remove /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
What root file manager? CASUAL? do I do it right now before flashing this recovery? meaning is the file it wants me to remove is already on my phone?
next step;
3) extract the zip
What zip? I downloaded 3...
next step;
4) use the following adb shell/terminal commands:
Code:
adb push recovery.lok /data/local/tmp/
adb push loki_flash /data/local/tmp/
adb shell
su
chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/loki_flash
/data/local/tmp/loki_flash recovery /data/local/tmp/recovery.lok
I just don't understand this at all, where do I do this?
In short, I'm eventually trying to flash CleanROM;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317772
I just hope I'm heading at least in the right direction. Thanks.

baseband question
Hello all!
I have a question regarding basebands ... many of the roms say you must be MDL baseband. My canadian I337M is MVLUAMDJ baseband. However in a post in the devellopment section it says the only canadian one is MUMUAMDJ. Why is mine different? Did I do something wrong when I rooted my device. Others in the modem form said they are running this baseband as well. I was gonna post there but I cant cause im a noob. I would like to try some of the custom roms but do not know if it is safe to do so. Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Here is a stupid question, I have us att device, I have canadian att people asking me how to do this and that, where the hell are their kernels and such? By the looks of things, don't they just use att standard (us) kernels? Don't they use a completely different modem also? Its obvious they can't find it....so LET ME find it...sheez...
someone please! Look at the post above this one....COMPLETELY LOST.
Update: nevermind I found the Canadian kernels. Took a whole 2min.
Why Ax, are you getting involved, it doesn't concern you...are ya stupid?
Is this the thread were they hold your hand? I heard about this new thing they are trying here.

If you used the casual root method then you already have a recovery (twrp) on your device. Check out the I337 link in my signature for information on continuing.

Hello all,
Forgive me if I'm posting this in the wrong section - my post count is too low to post in the proper dev forum.
I have installed the new Omega v7 ROM and loaded KT-GS4 kernel for compatibility with the SGH-i377M.(http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...53528&page=480).
Everything appears to be running very well except the email app. It just displays a white screen then eventually I will get a message stating the app is hung, continue waiting or kill it. Not sure if it matters, but I have two pop3 accounts, and two exchange accounts setup.
Any assistance would be great!
did the email app work at any point after initially running it?
what rom did you come from and how did you wipe before flashing this?

I came from a completely stock, Rogers SGH-i337M phone. The email app runs fine before I flash Omega v7 and after (when I restore my backed up image via TWRP).
In my reading of the Omega ROM v7 thread, a wipe was not required prior to the loading of the image. So, no wipe was done.
Thanks.
so how long did you run on omega before you started having problems with the email?
wiping is important and the key to a bugless, functioning ROM. there are different levels of wiping based on the type of flashing you are doing. in your case, a backup and full wipe would have been recommended.

It never worked, it was immediate.
I will take your advise, and follow your noob guide in your signature.
Is there anyway to do this without backing up/restoring as I use this device for business and don't want to risk loosing anything?
Thank you very much for your guidance.

if you dont want to lose anything, move everything you want to save to a computer or your micro sd card. if you are uncomfortable with any procedures, read some more and return to stock until you are sure of what you're doing. i dont want to see you damage your device.

I have installed Titanium back and followed your guide (thank you). Within Titanium backup, is there a way to restore all apps at once without having to manually press install for each? Also, will this restore all my email data?
Help needed - I have accidentally deleted the entire gallery of my S4, and with S4 running KitKat 4.4.2 build XXUGNI1
I tried all the one click solutions to try to prevent any over writing of the storage but none of them, including tower root, seems to work on this build.
Is there any other way to try? I am thinking of changing to a custom Rom and load it via Odin - is there any way it can be done without overwriting user data?
Thanks in advance for any hints or pointers. Cheers.

Storage meaning stuff you have on your internal storage, like music, photos, and such? Or are you actually talking about installed apps and games?
Firstly, rooting will not wipe your phone. Only when flashing a custom ROM it is recommended to wipe cache and data (will not wipe internal storage) to prevent bugs.
Second, you could try rooting the phone via Odin. I also tried rooting my device with one click rooting software but it didn't work.
Use Odin and CF-Auto-Root. Here's the link to a thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219803
But make sure that you have the correct model first.
Note: This may change knox status to 0x1 and void your warranty.

Yes, I have to try to recover the deleted photos, so would have to preserve the user data rather than have it wiped during rooting
Will try that. The phone is already out of warranty. Havent tried since installing custom rom on my Galaxy S (the first one) but Odin didnt seem to have changed at all. Many THanks!
I have a rooted shield tv pro 2017. I have SU installed but not TWRP which I boot from fastboot. I want to completely wipe the shield because I have begun to get sluggish behavior and a lot of apps crashing at random times. To include Leanback Launcher crashing. I have backups made with TWRP in case something goes wrong. Can I do this from TWRP so I can wipe all apps and data without leaving behind orphan files etc.
thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,
Have you managed to get some info about how to do this or tried with success?

No. Not even one response....Haven't tried it yet because I don't want to brick my shield. I know there are people on this forum that have either done this or know how, but no one is responding. I also noticed that where I asked the question is perhaps not the appropriate thread to ask questions so that may have something to do with the lack of a response.
I guess if you wipe user data, it will factory reset.
I would uninstall SuperSU first. Probably not necessary but safe.

I can say I'm more or less in the same boat as you are, with a small difference: my Shield is not booting at all, so it's sitting in the drawer and waiting. I wouldn't mind trying to flash the update from within twrp (I also flash boot it, it's not installed) but it seems difficult to find someone that actually has the OTA public*.zip for the Shield Pro 2015 (started the thread here but not one answered so far). I guess my best chance will be to get a second Shield Pro 2015 and get the OTA update file myself
