Just received my Nexus 7 in the mail today, I got lucky, mine seems to be in perfect condition, no defects. This thing handles everything I throw at it, JB is impressive. Not sure if I should root it just yet, since it's super speedy already. Did any of you root it yet?
I rooted my G2x, which is what you have to do since the device is incredibly laggy on stock. I used a backup and I didn't feel like flashing CM7, so I'm stock ATM.
Do any ROMs currently offer a speed boost compared to stock JB? For me, the only cool reason to root currently is to get tablet UI.
Also, does Wallet work on a rooted N7?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Yes, I rooted it directly to get the tablet-UI.
To root you need to unlock the boot loader. Doing so wipes the device. There are way to backup the device first, but if you just got the unit, root it now to avoid the hassle of reloading.
With root you can use tools like Titanium Backup to backup your device, Recovery, etc...
Rooting is a piece of cake.
Rooted it just minutes after I took it out of the box to get CWM Recovery and Titanium Backup on it because I knew I was going to go tweak and configuration crazy on it.
Can't you just back up your apps with Google? Worked with me a few times.

I played with my device for a couple of days before rooting, and I used the backup in the toolkit that I used to unlock/root, and it did an okay job, but it was far from perfect. I had to reset a lot of things... I would just root to begin with. If you are on these forums, you will probably want to root your device at some point, just do it early...

Google doesn't back up your app data, which is really the important stuff to back up.
Yup rooted it and got titanium backup, ad block for browsers

Rooted as soon as I got home from store. Same as for my phones. I don't feel complete without rooting. Thanks developers

When I get my replacement, with all going well, going to wait a week or so to see if any issues occur.

with all Nexus devices its great to just unlock the bootloader rather you root it or not..
you'll be mad after you downloaded 100+ apps and movies/tv shows then you want to root it and install a cool rom and have to wipe all your sdcard data..
Got mine out of the box. A few mins later it was rooted. The reason to get an ad blocker is good enough to root.
Sent from my secret spaceship
Not yet. I stay away from very early software, but later one once its matured it'll be time to play.
Usually that is the first thing I do with my phones, but I have had my 7 for a little over a week and still haven't brought myself to root it. Now that there are some issues popping up I'll probably wait a little longer still.
I rooted mine out of the box. I got an 8gb and knew that I would want to add Stickmount for offline movies and stuff. Also, I know that at some point I will want to try a custom rom.
Had mine rooted within the first 15 minutes of it being delivered! I used Wugs root toolkit v1.5 to get it unlocked and rooted. For now, I'm just waiting until the roms come out of beta to flash.
I think it's been said a few times over in the root toolkit thread, but for me, I had to do it the manual way (still incredibly easy) instead of the automatic root method.
I also think it's a good idea to root and install different roms, so that the device can be used up to and even beyond it's potential.

Me too. Took it out of the box and unlocked it. With morfic around I can't stay stock.

Welcome both, I hope you're as pleased with your phone as I am. I'd strongly suggest having a good read of Dr Ketan's root guide in the development section. Chances are you'll need to downgrade to root and the doc's guide is excellent.

Hey! Yes, very pleased with it. I'm a little disappointed with the Android email apps, though. I've come from an iPhone so I was used to good email on that. I just can't find an Android app that comes close. But other than that, I can't fault the Note.
Thanks for that; I'll check it out.

that is so not true. i use flash everyday on my phone with embedded youtube videos on sites, watch the euro on my phone thanks to flash support and a lot of other stuff. It's true that a lot of the bigger budget more mainstream site have converted to HTML5, but i find it absolutely revolting that when i'll need it, i wont be able to use flash. Its not like its not going to work anymore. Its just no longer being supported or updated. Flash 11 is all we need for every website. Iphone users would give there left nut to have an apk that works. Even if it never gets updated. Maybe even both nuts.

Im not saying that its not outdated, i'm saying that a very large number of sites still use flash and our apk will work until the site goes to html 5. So it no longer getting updated is not a big deal. Its old news.
Now, If our flash apk simply doesnt work on jellybean, then you will have some upset folks.

Yup. I had a LOLApple moment a few days ago in a bagel place. My 4yo wanted to sit next to another ~4yo and his mom. After a few minutes, my 4yo asked if he could use my phone to play a game on the Nick Jr website. I gave him my phone. When the other 4yo saw this, he asked his mom to do the same with her iphone. Ruhtroh, Nick Jr is a flash site and so her iphone wouldn't load it.

That kind of made my day.
After installing the latest OTA, (I'm 100% stock no root, don't hate,) i had to go back into the ##3282# menu and zero out the proxy values. No problem, I've been used to having to redo this after updates/rom flashes ever since my EvoOG. However, this time around, as soon as i did the mod, my Youtube videos stopped loading! I would IMMEDIATELY get a server error and tap to retry message. I went and restored the stock proxy values, and sure enough, the videos now work like a charm every time. Thanks Sprint/HTC, if you spent as much time getting us Jellybean as you do making our lives difficult, maybe your inboxes wouldnt be flooded with complaints =] i wish you and your devs uncontrollable diarrhea while stuck in traffic tonight.

My question is what will I get off I root my device and go on some kernel or something...
Forgive stupid question and lack of knowledge, but I am new in Android...

Rooting opens many doors to what you wanna do with your phone. It all comes down to each user preferences.
Rooting means gaining root access to your device. When you take your phone out of the box, while there are plenty of settings you can tweak, you can only alter what the manufacturer allows you to. By gaining root access you can modify the device's software on the very deepest level.
check out this article > http://gizmodo.com/5982287/reasons-to-root-your-android-device
Edit: your question about kernels. For starter, I would recommend to not play around with custom kernels yet because it can damage your device if you are not sure what to do.
Some of the things people who to achieve (with the nexus 4 anyway) are better battery life, better display calibration, improved speaker volume, overall enhanced customization of your phone. However, with customization, comes confusion. So be sure to read up as much as you can throughout the forum. Learn about ADB, ROMs, Kernels.

Well, at last, the constant screen redraws have disappeared. And DOZE seems to work, as advertised. All in all, the 9 is now the tablet it should have been last year. It works.
I am on LTE and got the OTA update yesterday
However, it WILL NOT install. I keep getting an error message when it tries to install.
I have stock Nexus 9 LTE with no custom roms or anything.
Might a try a factory reset see if that works.

I've got marshmallow on my Nexus 9 (WiFi) and I believe it's significantly smoother. I can't say for sure since I've only used it since I got the prompt to update my tablet on August 8th.
Battery life seems to be a bit better. Of course going through the permissions and turning off permissions that were unneccesary for certain applications may play a role in better battery life (since location, etc. won't be used, for example). Hope this little comment helps anyone out!

What build are you on?,I don't think Google will push M to you unless you've got the latest build which is LMY48T.
As soon as I side loaded the LMY48T build the Marshmallow update message came through instantly,I'm using the nexus 9 WiFi model in the UK.

Yeah, they have the same build number,LMY48M is the build immediately before LMY48T,this is most probably why you've not had M pushed to your device yet,you should do what I did, sideload the LMY48T update zip via ADB,you should then receive the Marshmallow update OTA from Google.
