MAJOR overheating issue's on slim ics with devil3 kernel - Galaxy S I9000 General

as the title says, i have major overheating issues i will use the phone for 5 min then its becomes VERY HOT so i have to turn it off i have a OC but it never gave these issues before, on any rom even disabling the oc i still have these issues.
my settings:
1300mhz(high)
200mhz(low)
noop
performance
no UV(maybe i should at one need you help)
voodoo color boost
403mb ram
didle enabled
devil idle(automatic)
BLX to 90%
no live oc
so what is the prob? im on wifi it gets hot even on half brightness
on 3g i cant use my phone for more than 5 min before i need to turn the screen of.
this is worrying me alot.

OMG u set cpu governor to performance @ 1.3 GHz do u want to Melt ur phone dude :laugh:

Governor Performance is definetly NOT for everyday use - with performance your CPU is running at max speed all the time. I think your device is broken. My SGS with 112% live oc and lulzactive is only a little bit warm after 2 hours of YT and internet.

I'm not sure if his phone is broken. My phone used to get very warm, then after I changed rom it didn't get warm at all.

My phone steadily overclocks at 710 only while on the charger, however when off the charger it tends to freeze up and crash (especially when the screen is off). I only ever overclock that high while playing RT2 or another high intensity 3D game. I think that we need to make an overvolt kernel to better overclock but making kernels is way over my capabilities.
I am stable at 652 on battery on any rom/kernel. My phome gets extremely warm all the time (even when 480 max), but I think that has something to do with my crappy battery and always running the phone at 100% brightness.
@mejorguille, what rom or kernel are you using.. CM 5.0.8-DS Can Online Do 576. I wanna try 652 if its good on my G1.

Hey guys,
I've rooted my G1 with no problems overclocking for bout a year plus till NOW!
The problem was my clockspeed is capped at 528 no matter how i use it? how do i get off the restrictions for the 528 mark? i'm using set cpu!
Regards!
For those of you overclocking like crazy. You are not doing anything but making your phone freeze up and get hot!!!!! Your cpu can not handle that. And will not be going any faster than maybe in your mind!!!!!!

[Q] CM7 + Glitch Kernel not down-clocking

Been lurking for close to a year, but first time posting, so my apologies if this is not the correct forum or location for this question. I would have posted in the Glitch kernel thread but I'm still stuck in the noob-lockout.
I'm running the latest CM7 with the latest, high-leakage Glitch kernel. I became suspicious after I "calibrated" my battery (charged to 100%, reset stats, drained to 0%) and noticed that my battery life was much better while in deep sleep, but with the screen on it was draining at almost 1% per minute. In deep sleep I will get somewhere between 2-5% drain per hour.
CPU Spy shows my frequency breakdown as 1000Mhz at ~10% and Deep Sleep at ~90% with all other frequencies at virtually 0% (this is with resetting the timers and running for a day).
I would think that even with the screen on, there will be moments when the CPU will be throttled down. Running SetCPU on previous roms, I noticed that when idling, the CPU speed would often drop to 100Mhz, but this doesn't seem to be happening with my setup.
I didn't notice any comments in the Glitch or CM7 threads regarding this phenomenon, so I'm wondering if it's something I failed to setup correctly or some other cause.
As an update, I've switched back to the stock CM7 kernel and it is properly throttling down now. 100Mhz is now showing a much higher percentage in CPU Spy.
I would really like to switch back to Glitch, but unless there's some solution it doesn't seem like it's worth the huge increase in battery usage.

You must have a setting incorrect.
Being clocked at 1.2ghz (BFQ i/o and Smartass) CPU spy is telling me the following
1200Mhz - 4:03 - 0%
1000Mhz - 1:01 - 0%
800Mhz - 9:05 - 1%
400Mhz - 7:037 - 1%
200Mhz - 4:59 - 0%
100Mhz - 21:09 - 4%
Deep sleep - 7:40:15 - 90%
What Governor did you try?
I was using bfq with smartass.

Questions:
-Do I have to enable the option "force minimal freq. when screen off''?
-After how many minutes does my sgs go into deep sleep mode?

Are you experiencing the same increased battery drain with the screen on?
1. Using SetCPU is asking for trouble (random reboots, etc). The Glitch thread OP says to use Voltage Control instead.
2. High Leakage = fewer problems for those with lower quality hardware build (yes, it varies from Fascinate to Fascinate - all Fascinates are not assembled equally), but poorer battery life. Low-leakage = better battery life, but you better hope your Fascinate was assembled well because if it wasn't, you'll have more fcs and freezes than on medium or high leakage.
3. There is no combination of governors, voltages, and schedulers that is the best for everyone - each combo will work better for some than for others
I hope this helps
Another Fascinating post by my XDA app...
I remember reading about the dangers of using SetCPU with this ROM, so I've only been using Voltage Control.
My problem doesn't seem related to the governor or scheduler, since each combination yields the same result.
The problem is that the CPU speed jumps to 1000Mhz as soon as the screen is turned on, and stays at 1000Mhz until it's turned off, which causes it to drop down into Deep Sleep. There is no in between, not with any combination of scheduler or governor, it's either full blast or nothing.

Another Fascinating post by my XDA app...
I decided to restore back to DI01, and use the OTA updates to bring myself back up to ED05. I then reflashed CM7 and Glitch and this problem has gone away. Not quite sure what caused it, but it's running great now.
Running at a solid 1200Mhz with -50mV.
Yes still draining, locked up in 800 mhz cpu freq. (cpu spy) and no deep sleep mode. I'm going to reflash the kernel soon.
Something went wrong I guess (stucked in glitch bootscreen after flashing).
First cleaning scripts and flash the default cm7 kernel for my sgs to be sure.
It should work well according to a member in glitch sgs topic.

SetCPU best speed

Hey everyone, just wanted to post this to see what cpu speed works best for you guys.. Im using these preset things with the program like performance or power saver etc but i dont seem to notice a difference all of them seem to be the exact same.. Wondering how to make it good for like 50% power and 50% performance, basicly balancing the 2 out as long as its better than stalk and not burning out my cpu.. so thanks, let me know what works for you guys as ive heard its slightly different for everyone else
(HTC EVO 4G)
I use the standard "ondemand" governor with a 998max-245min, but the thing I found makes the most difference are the settings under "Advanced".
I use the below "Advanced" settings along with a 245-245 screen off profile.
Seems to get me the best battery and cpu scaling.
It also helps to use an undervolting kernel like Freedom-More.
Try that for a couple days.
NOTE: click the apply button a couple of times (might be bug but they sometimes don't take on 1 button click). Try them as is without "Set on Boot", until you are sure that your phone likes them. Plus, check after a reboot that you verify/reapply them.
Sampling rate: 20000
Up Threshold: 85
Ignore nice load: 0
Powersave Bias: 14
I'm at 691200 on smartass governor with 245000 as min on Rcmix rom

The "presets" are how the cpu scales i'd use "interactive" or "smartassv2" 245 min and max at 998+ then search around for here for various profile set-ups
I'm running the Gingerbread-Evo-Deck 1.3 with a Savaged Zen 2.2.1 CFS HAVS Kernel. I'm also undervolted 50mV, and using the interactive x governor set at 128MHz-768mhz. Running a few other simple tweaks learned from Carhauler, and I've got excellent battery life and great performance.
I currently run mine on an ICS rom & it comes standard with a tiatmat 4.1.0+ kernel & the cpu is running at about 245mhz-1036mhz with smartass governor(I usually set it to smartass v2 but it switches back to smartass haha). My battery life for me is enough to get me thru the day.

Your GPU Overclock/UV settings

If any of you have OCed/UVed the GPU of the note, I'd really like to know your settings.
Right now I only have lock on 267mhz with -100mah. I'm a afraid to push further because I haven't seen people that pushed the GPU more. It was always about CPU.
flash abyss note kernel it has built in overclock of gpu
160mhz--950mv
267mhz--1000mv
300mhz--1100mv
you dont need to overclock it then previousely it had 400mhz step instead of 300 but it makes fone quite hot while playing games and if you want to overclock gpu without flashin your kenel or remainin at your kernel m assuming u dont have the abyss note then you can try voltage control extreme or tegrak but they will not have the 300 mhz step from 267 to 400 mhz directly. ..
enjoy the great work of great devs

I already know about abyss settings.
Anyway, I'm building for best battery life / performance. So I flashed Speedmod on Rocketrom. While overclocked to 1600mhz - 1300mah with 500mhz -800mah as lowest possible cpu power.
I think I'll try out 300mhz on GPU. How hot was 400mhz?
EDIT;
I can't seem to get 300mhz on tegrak. That sucks. Is 400mhz safe at all? I mean, I can understand it being hot but is it safe?

Nice, anyway. Is that lock on 400mhz? or not?
if not, are you on 267-400mhz?
setcpu does GPU oC/uv ? or do we have to use tegrak ? any issues if we use them both togather ?
@ clairenix
was little but not too much as you cant even touch but it eats up a lot battery if u not uv it .. while i been using rocket v22 with 3.7 abyss my battery is like m using some nokia fone its hell lot superb than ever before however i feel that rocket v21 together wid abyss 3.6 or 3.7 also gives best battery with superb performance and again its up to you but i feel abyss note has better battery life and hell lot better performance than speedmod
@hackerboi no dude as much i know set cpu does not perform gpu oc or uv nothing wid gpu only cpu oc uv profiles and governors .... how ever tegrak does all same ++ it can also oc/uv cpu but it has only 400mhz step after 267 nothing in between
no issues using together but y would u use both together ..i like tegrak more and voltage control extreme the most the app for oc or uv cpu and gpu
I'm already using SetCPU and have undervolted quite a bit. I want an app to play with the GPU settings
im running abyss 3.6c on performance at 1.4ghz no UV and i clear 20 hours a day easy on battery life, darkyrom 3.1 and i do use my phone thats not idle time
im at 18 hours right now with 28% battery left still.

After more mods I just cleared about 10+ hours on dataplan browsing non-stop and games on the side @ 500mhz-1700mhz @ full brightness while using Rocketrom v22 + abyss 3.7. That says alot about performance/battery life you could get with enough fidling around.
That's pretty much enough for what I need but I wanted to experiment since I read that speedmod consumes less battery.
I gave up with gpu undervolting and speedmod for now. Since I don't have time for stress testing.
@ HACKERBOI try tegrak ultimate or voltage control

[Guide] Get rid of lag in games / Interactive gov is bugged!

Hi guys,
I have the 855 version of this phone, and I have noticed that, even if Antutu scores are spot on (44k), in games such as GT racing 2 or similar I get a lot of lag.
Now, everyone will think "there are 1000 threads about lag, stick to those". Unfortunately, tricks such as getting rid of the thermal protection are really not good options, as the phone temperature will start to skyrocket.
There's a much easier and safer solution: root the phone and change the governor from interactive to conservative.
With interactive gov and CPU temp open in the background, I have noticed the CPU frequency bounces continuously up and down between 300mhz and 2400, even if the CPU temp is only 55c or so. This is causing the lag! Interactive governor is severely bugged, and this happens with any rom (I have tried both the stock 20h and the ChupaChups 4.2) and kernel (non AOSP at least).
Then, I switched to conservative, launched the game again, and guess what....now the frequency is nicely stable at 2457mhz throughout the entire gameplay and lag is gone completely. Temperatures? Totally fine: max 60c while playing and usually between 35 and 40 while whatsapping.
I literally tried everything to get rid of this damn lag, and the only thing that worked before this solution was to use a different kernel (chupa chups 2.1) and changing the governor...but I was getting crazy high temperatures, that sometimes touched 80c, and this was with a very heavy undervolt too! So I recommend to use the stock kernel, because it's the only one - for me at least - that grants good performances (and by that I mean no lag in games whatsoever and constant 2450mhz while playing) with good temperatures.
Any other option, including undervolting and trying different kernels didn't work for me, because either the CPU frequency kept shifting up and down every second causing lag, or - when I managed to keep it stable using different kernels and undervolting - the CPU temperature while playing got way too high (70c+, touching 80c sometimes).
To sum it up
1) Stick to stock rom and stock kernel (because of temperature issues)
2) Root
3) Change governor from interactive to conservative with Trickstermod (busybox required)
4) Enjoy smooth gaming experience and very good temperatures, with no significant throttle whatsoever!
Hope this helps!
as far as i know, conservative puts the cpu speed into the lowest possible, thus i thought won't be good for gaming performance.
nevertheless, i'd try for a few days and see if there's any noticeable difference.
thanks for sharing the knowledge, OP!

Theoretically you are right. But...interactive is bugged. Ondemand doesn't work (it will make your phone freeze) and performance will drain too much battery. So we are pretty much left with conservative.
Give it a try, and when you do, make sure you have CPU temp open to monitor both temperature and cpu frequency!
Let me know
Thank you! It really did the trick, gaming became MUCH better.
I tried RR3 - it became a lot better. On interactive it lags even in menu, on conservative it's rendering at 23-30 fps with slight not-game-breaking lags.
Battery
And about the battery? Will drain more in conservative than interactive? And will speed up the phone in all app or only in heavy games, when cpu is more active?

I wouldn't worry about battery life..
It seems that this working generally, phone is much snappier and smooth for me than on interactive.
Yeah...the reason is that LG did an awful job with the interactive governor, and what's even worse is that it's actually using it as the default one.
Pretty incredible how bugged this is.
Yes but I think it's possible to make script in init.d folder to run conservative on boot as default. Maybe someone make one.
I Will try this ☺only for curiosity! I need busybox installed too or trickstermod only?
I've been doing the same thing for a long time now. I use SetCPU to automatically switch to the performance governor whenever the screen is on, and interactive whenever the screen is off.
You may also want to consider disabling mpdecision and thermald also. One of the two (probably mpdecision) will regularly change the governor back to interactive if you don't.

That works to get rid of the lag...but my phone was reaching easily 80c.
Now, with everything stock, the frequency stays nicely at 2457mhz with no throttle at all and the in-game temperature only maxes out at 63/64c.
Thanks for sharing this brother...just switched to conservative in trickster and I'll see how it goes.
I'm on crash Rom stock kernel with thermal mod activated...
Don't have any temperature issues till now expert while playing heavy games for some time.
Thanks again
Are the settings in trickstermod applied as you change the setting ? Or do you need to apply them manually ?
Also, do they apply on boot ?
I will try that, thx for the info.

On the latest trickster version you hit the upper right settings icon and the first four option that appear are under the set on boot part.check the kernel setting to be set on boot and you are done.
Of course after changing the governor that is...
