Tasker and Nexus 7 - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Wondering if anyone has any input of this.
I already have a tasked profile for when I sign onto my home network to disable notifications on my phone, as I am using my tablet exclusive at home. Then they turn back on when I leave my WiFi range of my house. I am using Tablet Talk for SMS so I get those notifications on the tablet.
Now...
I want to setup Tasker on my tablet so that when I am not home my tablet does not make noise.
Any ideas on how you would do it?
Looking for brainstorming ideas...

I don't use Tasker on my Nexus 7 but use it on my phone. I think I understand what you're wanting, but not quite sure.
Couldn't you just set up a profile for Wifi Near and invert it? Then create a task to enable silent mode?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

Set a variable that changes values when you are connected to WiFi and then a task with an if that only executes if the value is whatever when you are not connected.
Might not be the best way, but that's where I would start.

Correction on this a little after re reading my post. I want to get it so that when I am not home and leave my tablet there it does not make noise. I am not sure if there is a way for tasker to scan the network for a specific MAC address and if it sees it then disable notifications. Then I'd be able to sign onto my WiFi at home with my nexus phone when I get home and all notifications would go to the tablet.
Was also thinking NFC would be neat to trigger it all. Think this way. You come home and tsp your phone to tablet and the notification volume gets turned up on your tablet (ie. Gmail, SMS). Then when you leave you tap them together again and NFC turns notification volume up on your phone an down on your tablet.
Using NFC tasker I can only see writing to NFC tags for tasks not setting specific tasks based on the NFC communication between the two devices.

Two options come to mind. First would be pairing your phone and tablet over bluetooth and then creating a state where when they are not connected to each other, the tablet would be in silent mode. Second, how about just having the tablet go to silent mode when charging? You're not likely to be using your tablet while charging because the battery life can handle it, and you probably leave your tablet charging when you're not home.
It's not perfect but I'm not sure how else you'd do it without getting really fancy in Tasker stuff.

I saw this thread and had to share my idea. It sounds like what you need is a way to let your Nexus know when you are no longer home. The easiest way to do that, in my mind, is through SMS, especially since you already have SMS tied to your tablet, anyway. You could add a hook to the profile you already have that turns notifications on and off based on whether you are home to also send an SMS to your tablet with a code word that you would then use in a Tasker profile on the Nexus to trigger your silent mode. So something like.
Get Home:
Turn on your SMS forwarding, Send "I'm home" SMS to the Nexus by sending an SMS to yourself that gets forwarded, triggering your profile that you'd want for when you're, you know, home.
Leave home:
Send "Not home" SMS to the Nexus, putting everything into silent mode, then turn off SMS forwarding
It's probably also possible to set it up so tasker immediately dismisses the notifications and deletes the SMS for you, since it seems to me like Tasker can pretty much do anything. The only other option I could come up with would be something that constantly has the two devices pinging off each other, which sounds like a battery eating nightmare.
Side note for my own info, but I plan on picking up a 7 in the next few weeks and I assume based on this thread that Tasker functions well on it? I've currently got a rooted and jellybeaned Fire that Tasker won't really work on, at all.

autoremote is a tasker plugin. If for some reason you don't want to use sms as another poster suggested, you can link your n7 and phone and send messages through autoremote. Basically you'd have the opposite of your existing profile turning your phone notifications off, and when you phone isn't on your home network it will send an autoremote message to your n7 that you can use as a context to make whatever sound alterations (and other changes) you'd like.
autoremote is the easiest way I've found to communicate back and forth between tablet and phone. I use it to sync alarms between them, so I have a backup alarm without actually having to set it up.

SMS notifications while in standby (findings)

So I've got the problem where when my phone is off/standby I don't get a notification or alert until I turn the phone on at which point it plays the standard alert and vibrate (this is of course useless).
Playing around and I noticed that this problem goes away when I uncheck the setting 'Turn device off after X mins'.
Now, at first I assume that there were 3 modes on the HD (and presumably on all htc phones) and they are: Power off, standby, on. Those states seem self explanitory. Give that assumption, I always thought that there was just a problem with the sms program doing a notification.
With this new solution, ie, disabling auto turn off, all my text messages come through with a notification within 6 seconds of sending it on the other end. But I played around with it some more. Some of you may know of a program called psshutxp. This program can do three things: display off, turn off, and reset. Now I never used this turn off feature before because I assumed it just turned the phone off. I activated this function with the auto turn off setting disabled (the phone doesn't auto turn off) and end up not receiving messages (exactly like the original problem).
What I've concluded then is that the device actually has 4 states: Power off, standby, display off, on. Now if you read the whole thing you may have noticed that I'm implying the solution is to disable auto off and thus leave the device in what would appear to be 'display off' mode. It works, certainly, but I'm starting to think that battery life is going to suffer immensely. (I'm going to test this tonight)
It seems we're back to square one, but wth a little, and albiet minor conclusion: SMS messages should wake the device but leave the screen off. There have been some intermediate solutions that say to change the 'disable device wake on sms' registry from 1 to 0 or use HD tweak to achieve a similar effect then combine this change with a good screen locker.
My question then is, is it possible to wake the device but leave the screen off via registry or via resident program?
Investigating the resident program option some more, is it possible to run compact framework programs while the device is in standby?
Finally, I know that the Touch Diamond 2 had a recent hotfix for this exact issue. Considering the similarities between the two devices, is it possible to port a solution? I'm going to see if I can try it out myself (but I'm not as experienced at platform modifications as I am in software development). I also noticed that a lot of Diamond 2 users still report the problem wasn't solved with that hotfix.
check out the HD Tweak app, i think it has a "wake on SMS" tweak you can apply to the phone. would also help if you mention if you're using a Stock or custom ROM. in my case, i'm using a custom ROM with SMS Chat and i'm gettting SMS notifications with my device in stand-by mode. fyi, i'm not using the HD Tweak app...
Yeah, the Wake on SMS on HD tweak as mentioned in my post basically modifies the registry for device wake on SMS.
However, this is not, and should not be normal behaviour as waking the device turns the screen on as well. (unless your device is different in that it doesn't turn on the screen at the same time as waking up from a SMS, if this is the case, then... that's a pretty significant finding.)
just tested my device... screen is off (e.g., hit the power button to turn it off) sent myself a txt via my email account, heard the SMS notification and screen is still off. i'm using a custom ROM miri v26.2.
I can achieve the same effect by disabling auto turn off. As in: my device remains off and the SMS notification is properly sounded. (everything works as it should)
However, I worry that the device isn't actually in standby and rather just has the display off (which means that background apps are still running). A possible concequence could be that it would drain my batt pretty fast ( this is my cheif concern).

Locale - Hints and Tips

I am now a proud owner of Locale - great stuff! Expensive but good.
Has anyone else used this? Any hints or tips? It *seems* to sense location somehow even with GPS and wi-fi turned off for example, and how to use 'variables' properly.
Any must have plug-ins? Any way to change scenes with it?
What do you use it for? and how do you configure it?
Look for "Locale location plug-in". Brilliant, it's a localization service based on the mobile network cell you're in. it works without wi-fi or gps of course. "Locale cell plug-in" does the same but it will expire on August, maybe to become a pay app.
I like locale very much but realized that with the many plug-ins I've put I've easily reached 20 bucks..overall quite expensive for an android app!
Anyway, a priceless thing imho is using it to switch the phone to the airplane mode at late night ("Locale airplane mode plug-in", the free one)..you keep your alarm clock on but save the battery!
More to come..
I use locale to automatically put my phone in silent mode when I go to sleep (time plugin). In the morning it opens up my calendar so it's the first thing I see when turning on my phone (shortcut plugin). When going to college my phone turns to vibrate mode (calendar plugin). And I've got some power saving options when my battery runs low.
Lately I've come across the incoming sms plugin, and I use it in case of emergencies for my family and friends. Because my phone is always in silent mode when I'm sleeping, my parents for example can't contact me if there's something really urgent going on. If my phone receives a sms with the keyword 'SOS' in it, it switches to the loudest volume and changes my ringtone in an emergency tone, so they can call me after sending the text. This way the most important people in my life can always contact me, and my drunk buddies won't bother me at night

Tasker app from the market.

Sorry guys found a previous thread in another forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743861
Mods please delete.
I just bought the tasker app and figured I would let people know how its working for me, and to solicit suggestions for things I can do with it.
background:
Its a very good app that allows you to script the behavior of the phone based on a very large set of events or states.
My initial use:
As previously mentioned on this board the bluetooth streaming volume is not the loudest, so I always end up turning up the volume for bluetooth. Then when I plugin my headphones I destroy my eardrums.
So I setup a task that when I connect to my bluetooth car stereo, it automatically sets the volume to max and turns off wifi for good measure.
I have another task that when I plugin headphones, it sets the volume to 60% and opens the doubletwist music player.
Finally I setup the standard battery task so that when my battery gets to 20% it turns of all the GPS, wifi, and bluetooth radios, as well as dimming my screen.
Anyone else have this app and have something cool they have setup using it? I have heard of silent mode when the handset is placed flat facedown, which i thought was unique.
I have had it for a few days and am playing around with it. I have 2 tasks so far. First is to go to silent mode when face down. This is especially nice since I charge it overnight by my bed and don't want notifications (emails etc) waking me up so I have been just turning silent mode on at night and off in the morning. Sometime forgetting to turn on in the morning.
The 2nd task is to read the email sender and subject aloud when I am in the car and it is connected to my car stereo via bluetooth. I like the wifi off setting you did. I may do the same.
I also noticed that when listening to streaming through bluetooth with the wifi on but not connected to an ap, I get "skips" every once in awhile. Turning off wifi fixes it so I may set it to turn off wifi when streaming bluetooth audio.
Couple issues I have had. If the phone is in "standby" (pushing the power button) tasker won't go to silent mode. Also, I tried to make the screen go off when face down as well but it doesn't work. Apparently tasker can not turn the screen off but you are supposed to be able to change the timeout to as little as 7 seconds. I set that up but instead of the screen going off it just dims. Not sure of the issue.
I am interested in what others are doing so post the info.
I have two keyboards i really like in 2 different orientations.
Droid X keyboard:
its sweet autocorrections and large real estate makes it ideal for two thumb typing in landscape
swype:
slower than droid X keyboard in landscape, but in portrait, this is possibly the fastest/most accurate keyboard around.
I tried to set it up so that i could change my keyboards depending on the orientation, but i could not figure it out
im also for an app that turns your screen off with a timer (in the background). and have that work when you turn your screen downward./
any with either of these would be greatly appreciated.

Do any of you use tasker? If so, what for?

So I bought tasker months ago and barely ever used it. It's soo ridiculously powerful but i'm way to lazy to take the time to get a hold of the very steep learning curve (at least for me).
I really want to utilize one of these days because it's really a remarkable app that shows off the power of our phones.
I was just curious if any of you use it and what some of your favorite profiles are.
Also, is there some sort of 'how to use tasker for dummies" out there that I could check out? lol
Tasker does have a learning curve. I think it would be easier if they had a desktop environment to create profiles on, but I digress.
Yes, I was like you and bought the app and shelved it since I didn't have time to mess with it. I ran into some free time and dusted the app off. This is what profiles I've setup so far.
1) GPS turns on when apps that I've designated (ex. maps, navi, weather, etc) are launched. GPS turns off when the apps close.
2) Battery <5% turns screen brightness all the way down (coupled with setCPU with an under-clock with the same criteria will have my phone last as along a possible for emergencies). There's more functionality I want to add to this profile.
3) When a headset is plugged in, it sets my media volume and pulls up a menu of music apps for me to select.
4) Home Wifi (overly complicated). I search for the cell tower that I get reception at home (as long as I'm not in airplane mode). When in range of it, the phone search for my network SSID. When found Wifi turns on and connects to my home wifi and turns off the cell tower search (so if my cell signal goes to crap, wifi stays on). When I leave out of my network SSID, wifi shuts off and cell tower search is turned on. This code required some debugging as it wasn't so stable at first attempt.
5) Find phone (my favorite). I can send a text to my phone from any other cell phone. When the text is received, the phone will turn on GPS to find the coordinates and will return a text message to the originating cell phone with a link to google maps location (its bad ass!). Once the message is sent, the speaker volume gets turned all the way up and an mp3 of my choosing gets played (you can bet its an long, annoying, loud, and noticeable song). The final straw is the screen gets locked with a code. I need to investigate the possibility to remote wipe my personal data if necessary.
Best thing to do is to go into the app menu and select browse profiles >> user wiki. Check out the profiles they have there. Download them to you phone. Then go to app menu >> profile data >> import one profile (or task). Select the ones you just downloaded. Check them out, alter them to fit your needs, and you start to learn the syntax, what commands are available, and what's possible.
Good luck! Its a time sink when you get started.
GPS automatically turns on when I open a GPS-centric app.
Wi-Fi automatically turns on when I open a Wi-Fi-centric app.
When I connect my bluetooth headphones it asks me which music app I want to open.
My screen goes as dim as possible when I open my alarm clock at night.
It makes Widgetlocker open whenever my phone goes idle... since it doesn't always want to work.
1) I have a night profile that turns down all the notifications and ringer except the alarm for night time, then returns the settings to normal in the morning.
2) When It connects to the specific bluetooth unit in my car, wifi turns off (no need in a moving car), 3g comes on and media audio goes up for my streaming music. After disconnect wifi comes back on.
3) I have a google maps gps text message in case I misplace my phone
4) I have home and work profiles that turn on and off 3g once they connect to wifi.
Been toying with variables and setting text widgets from minimalistic text. works nice.
All in all very handy application.
Their website has some sample profiles on their wiki at:
http://tasker.wikidot.com/profile-index
1) Shut off "Low battery LED" when battery is at or below 14%
2) Turn off capacitive buttons backlight (home, menu, back, search) and keep it off
3) Since I use the notification pulldown power mod, I have a profile that checks if my wimax is on or off when I reboot or shutdown my phone so it can shut it off when the phone boots if it was off before the shutdown/reboot.
4) Tasker switches my governors for me. No setcpu for anything. Governor is switched to conservative when the screen is off, interactive when the screen is on, smartass for all games, and ondemand for web browsing and anything the other governors don't cover.
5) GPS turns on and off when it's needed (maps, navigation, sky map, etc.)
6) Incoming call LED blinking is stopped (since I leave my phone on sound mode almost all the time)
7) All notification LEDs are stopped (especially since gmail still triggers the LED)
8) Display rotation is turned on and off when it's needed (when in the sense ui it is off and when in web browser, certain apps or games it is on)
9) When my phone boots, tasker checks a variable for my wimax and shuts it off if it needs to
10) When I'm done with a phone call tasker sends me back to my main homescreen
11) Widget that changes my hosts file for adblocking or no adblocking on the fly. The name of the widget also changes according to its status (Enabled or Disabled)
12) When charging, the left LED is shut off and the Wimax LED is used instead.
13) If my screen has been off for more than 2 hours (when I am sleeping) the sound is silenced and airplane mode is activated.
I have more that I don't use but these are my daily profiles.
If I receive a text message from 11pm - 6:30am, I do not get notified and my phone responds with a ZZZZZZZ I am sleeping and will check in the morning.
I would love to get a hold of the profiles you guys are running. Lots of these would be helpful, at least as a learning tool.

Mind sharing these?
Wanted to try #4 but didn't have any success the first few times (months ago)
I have #5 but it doesn't lock screen (never noticed that) nor does it give me a maps link (tried but failed)
I have setup a Dropbox folder we could drop profiles into. PM me your emails and I will send you an invite to the folder with a link. Profiles are small so shouldn't chew up much data.
Please name your profiles descriptive so we know what it does etc.
Can the profiles be grouped in the dropbox? I have tasks that use multiple profiles.
From my EVO when I should probably be doing something else instead.
Here is my GPS text message finder XML profile (zipped). simple but effective. Sends google maps link.
Just change the "findmyphone" text message to what ever you want to trigger the response message.
View attachment GPS1.prf.xml.zip
1) Silence all sounds and put on vibrate during work hours (9-9PM).
2) Turn on GPS for specific apps (Navigation, Maps, Antenna, etc.)
3) Turn off when closing those apps.
4) Pop up menu with PowerAMP, Pandora, FM Radio options when inserting headphone.
5) Close those apps when remove headphone.
6) Pop up PowerAMP, Pandora when connecting with BT headphone.
7) Close those apps when disconnecting.
8) TXT my BB the coordinates, batt. life if I TXT S.O.S. to my phone (in case it's lost/stolen).
1) when i get w/ 50 meters of the office (or home). home and office are slightly different but the same idea.
- turn off bluetooth
- turn on wifi
- turn off 4G
- change wallpaper
- reduce ringer volume
(when i get out of 50meters...radios toggle)
- Bluetooth and 4G are on
- wifi is off
2) Quiet Time
- between 2300 and 0700
- notification sound 0
- notification vibrate is off
3) Quiet Cam - currently the AOSP camera has an obnoxiously loud CLICK.
- when camera app is active
- system sounds = 0
4) OnCall
- monitors my work calendar for the "OnCall" appointment.
- notification volume = 6
- change wallpaper (i'm on call for days at time, so this is handy reminder)
* wish i could increase only the 'work email' notification alert (i use two email clients so i can at least have a 'work email alert' and a 'personal email alert'...sadly, tasker doesn't seem able to take advantage of that.)
Can you guys actually put in steps on how you got these profiles. I'm trying to figure tasker out but its a lil overwhelming.

I do the following:
1. Turn off sound/ringers at certain locations, during certain times (Church, kid's school, etc).
2. Turn on WiFi at home or at work.
3. Overnight mode - automatically turn off WiFi & BT, lower screen brightness, filter calls from all but family, throttle CPU down to min 128000 max 256000. (uses max 1% battery and kept off charger for 8 hours).
4. Overclock CPU 10% for normal operation, underclock (min 128000 max 256000) when screen off (really good on batt).
5. Automatically ramp down CPU clocks as battery charge diminishes.
6. Turn down ringer volume when BT headset connected.
7. Silence phone when meeting in calendar with busy status.
A few others, but this is the main group of profiles.
1.) Turn on GPS when using Maps, turn it off otherwise
2.) Silence ringers during work hours
Not much, obviously I could do a lot more with it.

I know this is a pain but anyway you can put the steps you had to do to achieve these? Thanks in advance!

Anyone using it with Roam Control? I would like to use it to force roam while I am at work. I do it manually now since the 3g at work is horrible. Full -65dbm signal with 50 kilobit downloads. 3g roaming is awesome!

A lot of these are usually pretty simple, but some can get pretty complicated.
Have you looked at the tutorials / walkthroughs / user listing around the web?
Think of the context as the 'in this instance' and the 'task' as the 'do this.'
http://tasker.dinglisch.net/
http://tasker.wikidot.com/profile-index
These can give you some suggestions and can also shed light on how to use the app in varying scenarios.
A lot of people are using ones that are easy enough to figure out, or have been listed as basic but popular tasks (and can be found at either those links or elsewhere - google 'tasker profiles').
For instance, silencing ringer at night; Context - Time / 2200 to 0600. Task - Ringer Volume Zero / Notification Volume Zero / AutoSync Off.
That's obviously an extremely simple one, but again - context (trigger) and task (desired action).

[Q] Apps to control phone settings?

Greetings everyone! I have something very specific in mind that I'd like.. and I've tried looking around with no luck. Maybe someone here has some hands on experience and can point me in the right direction.
Is there an app that with one button-press change multiple settings on your phone simultaneously?
For example, when I get home, pushing one button and having it set to max volume, WiFi and Bluetooth on, GPS off.... getting to work, pushing one button and turning off GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, and silencing EVERYTHING, turning off vibrate, etc.
Does anything like that exist?
This could be possible with Tasker.
Sent from my black pearl using Tapatalk
Tasker sounds like the thing you need.
But you will have to set it up first.
But Tasker will probably require location service in order to determine where you are. So that it will make those switches automatically.
Haven't used it personally, but I heard things about it
