Back camera color noise with ICS - Acer Iconia A500

My A500 gets really bad color "noise" in preview and photos when using the back camera. The noise goes away in video mode.
This is only an issue in ICS (tested with all the latest stock images). In HC the camera works perfectly.
Does anyone else have this issue, or has a fix for it? Ideas?

Hi! I had this issue with the OTA update.
I have sent this video to youtube and after some weeks trying a solution, one of them finally work.
I had to do the update by sdcard again. Now my camera works fine.

ICS OTA camera issue
I have this problem too after taking the ICS OTA update. odd that the video/camera seems to work fine and the camera has lines running horizontally through preview. Don't remember this issue with HC. Anybody have a handle on the solution here?

Camera Problems

Hey guys, none of my cameras are working. When i hit the camera button the camera app turns on but the screen is white. I've tried searching but everything comes up related to a discolored camera. Ive tried flashing many roms, fixing permissions, tapping on the camera. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Do you have an Evo 4g? You said you "hit the camera button" but the Evo doesn't have a hardware camera button.
If it's happening across multiple roms, including stock, it's probably a hardware problem.

You haven't flashed a Froyo kernel on a Gingerbread ROM, have you? The issue you describe is a well-documented side-effect of doing just that. If not, I would flash back to stock and see if it works. If it does, then you know it's a software issue. If it doesn't, then I would agree with plainjane.
Did you ever get a working answer to this? I'm having the same problem. My camera won't open, it force closes before going anywhere beyond a black screen. The night before, it would at least open. The front facing camera worked but the rear facing camera seemed stuck on solarize (which I had no options to change). Seems like a software problem so I updated to the latest deck rom, updated hboot, pri, nv, wimax - now fully updated and still no fix. Tried installing miui apk and still same.
If I don't get this camera fixed, I'll have to unroot. Not looking forward to doing that but if it's between having root or camera, I'm going to pick the camera.
Hope someone can help before I have to go to such drastic measures.

Rooting won't break your camera.
I would flash back to a rooted stock ROM, and confirm whether camera works or not on it. If it does, then you know the issue is in fact software related (which it doesn't sound like it is). If it doesn't, then you have a hardware failure.
A corrupt sd cars gave me the same problem. Try re-formatting it.

I took it to Best Buy and they told me it's a sensor issue. My phone gets replaced so it's all good.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I tried them all before deciding it must be a hardware issue and going to BB.
I know this is a few months late, but I recently had a similar problem. I would click the camera icon and the screen would just go black and then f/c on me. I was running ICS roms, so I flashed to Decks GB rom, Mik 3.1 rom and had the same problem. So I figured it was a hardware problem.
I decided to open up my evo and take a look inside and found the camera housing was not seated completely. Pushed it back down and it has been working for days now
I guess it probably jarred loose when I dropped it or bumped it or something.
Thought I would share, because it was very frustrating for me, so I figured it might be bothering someone else.

ICS Camera Issues

After upgrading to ICS, the build in Camera App has problems and also the QRC-Reader App even shows a error.
In Google Googles and Camera FX, the Camera works perfect.
Does anybody experience the same issues.

Nope, all working perfectly here. I tested video, still, and panorama with the front and rear cameras, including all options (white balance, face effects, etc.), as well as panorama with the rear camera (it can't be used with the front one), and scanning a dozen different 2D and 3D barcodes with the ZXing app and rear camera as well.
Not a single error or crash on a stock US-market just-wiped TF101. Well, other than that the camera quality sucks, but that's a hardware issue.
every camera app including the stock one work perfectly.
Mine also works perfectly now... fornt and rear...
But one question though: in the stock camera app, what's the button in the lower right corner for? my camera app freezes when I click on it...
Hi,
Also for me not working camera; I try more applications, none of them working.
This is very strange: I have between the applications that are included in ROM also "Superuser". This suppose to came with ICS?
My TF was rooted previously, but when I did upgrade to latest version of HC (8_6_5_21), I did lost the root.
So this application was installed in my TF before the upgrade to ICS; but now I cannot uninstall: seems that is included in ROM.
The error I receive when I try camera is : "Can't connect to the camera".
I believe that something went wrong in my upgrade. I did also factory reset after upgrade to ICS, no change.
Now I hope some update from asus will help me.

camera not working
My camera is not working as well, done people have started their cameras up while holding their finger in front of it to activated their auto focus, and have had success. Just place your finger in front of the camera for 5 seconds then remove it. No success for me, but you can tell it's doing something different when you do that
Same problem here "Can't connect to camera". This error comes up for front facing camera but the back camera works perfectly. Thing is this error came up when I installed the prime rom.
PS. The front facing camera was working when I bought the tab.

Ah, the front sensor strikes again...
That's almost like my own experience with the front camera: worked like a charm on Honeycomb, since 9.2.1.17 it goes berserk in low-light conditions until the unit is rebooted (but instead of an error message the Camera application showed a garbled image with previous contents of the framebuffer).
IIRC, the first batch of logs I sent to Asus North America was related to this problem
Are you guys stock and unrooted? If not give it a shot just to see.

Buggy Camera App

I am having a lot of problems with the camera app on my tablet. I am stock .30, and rooted. The app is incredibly slow to the point of being unusable. When I do take photos, often they come out either glitched or just as a block green colour.
I have tried a cold reboot but it doesn't help.
I have also had the tablet reboot without warning when I have pressed the shutter button.
Anyone else having these problems or know how to fix them? Thanks.
I have attached some of the "photos" I have been able to take with the stock camera app.
Try clearing the camera app data, try using a different camera app from the market if neither of those work I guess you could try a factory reset. If that doesn't work contact Asus support or exchange your pad for a new one.

If a factory reset does not solve your problem, you may just have a defective devices seeing as how you are running the stock rom with stock kernel.
It's an intermittent problem, it's working fine now for example. This leads me to believe it's not a hardware issue. My tablet is also pretty laggy, and it hangs in most apps. I have since uninstalled 30 or so apps and it seems to be working a little better. I hope jelly bean fixes stability issues.
Am I the only one with this camera problem?

hence you should do a factory reset. mine doesn't lag at all

i think you should try the suggested factory default reset.
i have rooted mine today, and updated to .30 too, got back root, and the camera works perfectly like before.
lots of apps installed to.. also in .30 i have noticed a good system speedup in general.
haven't had any issues with my camera either. but i dont take many pics with it. i may have like 10 pics MAX.
however i do have some hang-ups with the camera app...like when i tap the little icon for the last picture...it takes the app about 10 seconds before it pops up the full screen image. just another annoying little hesitation with this tablet.
as for JB, i assume it will sort out all the issues we have currently. i am mainly looking for the little hesitations to be taken care of...which i assume they will be since JB is built with the Tegra 3 in mind (see nexus 7)
I would advise to do a factory wipe and re install the firmware. May help.

Confirming your issue. I have the exact same issues with mine. A difference though: mine is completely stock, no root or nothing customized. My camera seemed to be working under ICS. After the JB upgrade it has been a complete mess. I have done cold boots, factory resets and I finally had to request RMA/repair. My pad is only 2 months old and issue occured after upgrading to JB on 24th aug. RMA granted and at the Asus repair centre they have replaced the front camera for some reason even though my issues are connected with the rear. Anyway, pad returned and nothing has changed. Camera is still messed up. which actually is starting to annoy me rather much. Not only are the images solid green or glitched/double exposed - there is even a huge lag. From the time I shoot till the image is saved it takes about 2-3 seconds - the result being that the image saved is absolutely not the image I shot but some image at the time of saving (i.e. 2-3 seconds delayed). Extremely annoyning, because this was not an issue under ICS and it pretty much renders the camera useless when shooting objects in motion.
I have been granted yet another RMA/repair to fix the camera and hopefully asus will be able to resolve the problem this time. Hardware or software/firmware - I'm not able to tell. I will not, however, let this go until issue is resolved as the camera to me is a must. I should add that otherwise I am quite happy with the pad.

[Q] Extremely poor quality of camera when video chatting

I got an att lg g2 a few days ago with stocked firmware 80010d. Everything worked very well. I then flashed my cell to att 4.4.2 kitkat (80020c) with lg flash tool. The updating process should be successful because I strictly followed a video tutorial and everything is expected.
After flashing I realized that the picture quality of both front and back camera are very poor in some video chatting software (I used Wechat and Hangout). How poor it is? Most of the time my picture is totally black unless you put a light source in front of the camera (both front and back camera are experiencing the same thing). It seems the brightness level of the camera is set to its lowest value so everything is dark, and there is no way to adjust it in the video chatting software. (I do try to set the ISO and brightness to maximum level in camera app, but nothing is changed). Attachments show screen captures in Hangout with or without a light source in it.
Occasionally (it happened once when I had the phone fully charged), the brightness level is good, but the picture quality is extremely low. It seems the camera resolution is only 0.1MP instead of 2MP.
The camera itself works very well taking pictures or videos. It is only bad in video chatting. I searched hard on google but it seems my case is very rare. Is there some settings or adjustments I can do to fix this problem? I know my question is too long, Thank you for any advice.
Guess this is really rare. I will roll back to 10d and see what happens.
My wife's new LG G2 is doing the same thing and she is on stock kit Kat uprooted, came f e on AT&T on 10C, I'm using ClodyPro II on mine and mine works fine. Her problem is exactly like yours

So found a fix, just did it for my wife's G2 which as I said has the same issue, or had. I used the Flashtool to taker her back to 10d then I rooted, installed recovery, updated recovery, and flashed the 10d to 10c keep root and recovery in the AT&T G2 Dev Section, after I backed up first and preformed the install I immediately did a factory reset to wipe data, cache, and dalvik before I rebooted from recovery. Once it was set up, I tried hangouts and the camera looked just like mine, great!! Thought I'd share

Any fix?
Same here, I'm using WeChat and Hangouts video chat which produces black/darker front video.
I'm on stock 4.4.2 rooted. I haven't flashed any roms since day one. Any fix for this?
lg g2 issue in wechat after kitkat update
Even i'm experiencing the same **** in with my g2 after kikat ota update..... pls anyone have a solution
I am also having the same issue. I use wechat and stock kitkat not rooted. I think it's happening to a lot of us, so it isn't rare. Is there a solution yet? If not, can we get together and maybe report it.
Thanks.

240fps slow motion causing crash

Not always but a high percentage of the time if I'm using slow motion 240fps recording it ends at some point with the camera crashing and nothing can fix it other than a restart of the phone.
Is anyone else experienced this?
I can rma but I don't think it's a hardware issue.
Never had a problem the few times I've used 240. All stock software here

I'm in the same boat! hoping to find others who have this problem and get clear on whether it's a hardware or software issue. Mine first crashed when i tried loading 240fps slow-mo. restart was the only thing to get it going again. disabled google camera (which reverts to initial version), app updated back to latest, seemed to be fine when i went to 240fps mode, thought it was all resolved. then it came back again AFTER i recorded a slow-mo test at 240fps. When it's working (after restart) it works GREAT! but when this glitch occurs, can't do anything else with camera until I restart. I've attached screenshots of what it looks like when i try to take a pic after a crash.
I guess this is my window of opportunity to factory reset so I can unlock bootloader and root but would like to find a simpler solution if possible... anyone else out there with a similar issue?
tried uninstalling twilight and that seems to have stabilized things... fingers crossed
Same here if I zoom 100%. I called Google support and I have to RMA my 6P. :/
Here is the fix...Just upgrade your nexus 6p to Android N Beta through android beta program.
After updating to newest android version, my issue is gone.
Try this...it worked for me.

Are you completely stock? What camera app are you using? If Google Camera, what version? There is a known issue in version 3.2. If you're using 3.2, try rolling back to 3.1*** and see if that fixes the issue. If so, it's not a hardware issue.
