I am having a lot of problems with the camera app on my tablet. I am stock .30, and rooted. The app is incredibly slow to the point of being unusable. When I do take photos, often they come out either glitched or just as a block green colour.
I have tried a cold reboot but it doesn't help.
I have also had the tablet reboot without warning when I have pressed the shutter button.
Anyone else having these problems or know how to fix them? Thanks.
I have attached some of the "photos" I have been able to take with the stock camera app.
Try clearing the camera app data, try using a different camera app from the market if neither of those work I guess you could try a factory reset. If that doesn't work contact Asus support or exchange your pad for a new one.

If a factory reset does not solve your problem, you may just have a defective devices seeing as how you are running the stock rom with stock kernel.
It's an intermittent problem, it's working fine now for example. This leads me to believe it's not a hardware issue. My tablet is also pretty laggy, and it hangs in most apps. I have since uninstalled 30 or so apps and it seems to be working a little better. I hope jelly bean fixes stability issues.
Am I the only one with this camera problem?

hence you should do a factory reset. mine doesn't lag at all

i think you should try the suggested factory default reset.
i have rooted mine today, and updated to .30 too, got back root, and the camera works perfectly like before.
lots of apps installed to.. also in .30 i have noticed a good system speedup in general.
haven't had any issues with my camera either. but i dont take many pics with it. i may have like 10 pics MAX.
however i do have some hang-ups with the camera app...like when i tap the little icon for the last picture...it takes the app about 10 seconds before it pops up the full screen image. just another annoying little hesitation with this tablet.
as for JB, i assume it will sort out all the issues we have currently. i am mainly looking for the little hesitations to be taken care of...which i assume they will be since JB is built with the Tegra 3 in mind (see nexus 7)
I would advise to do a factory wipe and re install the firmware. May help.

Confirming your issue. I have the exact same issues with mine. A difference though: mine is completely stock, no root or nothing customized. My camera seemed to be working under ICS. After the JB upgrade it has been a complete mess. I have done cold boots, factory resets and I finally had to request RMA/repair. My pad is only 2 months old and issue occured after upgrading to JB on 24th aug. RMA granted and at the Asus repair centre they have replaced the front camera for some reason even though my issues are connected with the rear. Anyway, pad returned and nothing has changed. Camera is still messed up. which actually is starting to annoy me rather much. Not only are the images solid green or glitched/double exposed - there is even a huge lag. From the time I shoot till the image is saved it takes about 2-3 seconds - the result being that the image saved is absolutely not the image I shot but some image at the time of saving (i.e. 2-3 seconds delayed). Extremely annoyning, because this was not an issue under ICS and it pretty much renders the camera useless when shooting objects in motion.
I have been granted yet another RMA/repair to fix the camera and hopefully asus will be able to resolve the problem this time. Hardware or software/firmware - I'm not able to tell. I will not, however, let this go until issue is resolved as the camera to me is a must. I should add that otherwise I am quite happy with the pad.

Got the Droid X on 7/15, everything was great, got the system update, now the camera won't work. Black screen only, even though both the Camera and Camcorder apps behave like they're working (with a black screen). Cannot take pictures at all, can take video, although no image is shown and playback of videos is a completely black screen.
I look in the camera and it looks like the shutter is open, although I'm not 100% certain what a closed shutter would look like. I think I can see the lens.
I did a full System Restore, the problem did not go away.
I've tried the camera app from the marketplace, facebook, etc., all treat the camera in the same way: just a black screen.
Trying to take a picture, the focus noise doesn't even sound.
This was working prior to the update, albeit in a laggy manner. Should I return my Droid X, or is there some other software / use fix I have not tried?
Thank you in advance!
No one else is having this issue?
This is the first i personally have heard of this issue.
I would take it back and see if they can exchange it.

After the update I would try to go into the camera but it would say that it couldn't open it. A couple hours later it worked no problem. I recommend a factory reset to se if that helps and then try to exchange.
Edit: sort I didn't se that you already tried to reset it. Yeah it is time to take it back.

I've tried a soft and hard reset and no luck. But a quick search on the Motorola forums brings me to conclude that this could be a major problem that if it doesn't happen to you now, it might just happen later.

Mine did same thing... i pulled the battery while phone was on per the tech on the phone and it has worked fine since.
I have noticed this on rooted droid x's. Factory wipe didn't really resolve any of the camera issues. Re-loading with SBF resolved the issue sometimes, while other times, a simple cache wipe resolves the issue.
I dont know if this will work, but its just a suggestion that fixed my camera. My camera/camcorder app wouldn't open, so then I went into the gallery and deleted a corrupted image (It was all strange looking, a black square with lines on it, and also wouldn't open in any programs). Once I removed this image from my SD card the camera worked. Worth a try I guess...
Also try using another app to open the camera, like Vignette, in order to see if it is a hardware issue or a blur camera app issue.
Just as the thread title says, my camera is full of bugs, unable to change iso/exposure properly and hangs when I try to focus or take a picture. Had the same problem when using jf4 and jm2 as well as third party camera apps. Is this a software or hardware problem? And any solutions?

I had problems testing the panorama shot, but I never complained, mostly because I don't take pictures and I was just testing it. Also, in the camera's defense, I was talking pictures in a room, where perhaps there was an issue due to corners while the shot is intended to be of landscape....any thoughts?
Not exactly complaining but I think that it could be a hardware problem as half of the time I press the camera app, the app starts shows a black screen and says 'camera failed' and force closes...

Is this lag ?
Not much lag, but like I said its real buggy, can't even focus.when I tap on an area the box shifts to wheretapped but it does not focus, the box will now get stuck there and the iso/exposure will not change then usually the camera will stop working

now, that is an actual problem.
did you try rebooting the phone?
if you can't take even a normal picture, you might have an defective camera
Taking a picture is a hit and miss affair, takes pics 2 out of 10 times i try, it should be a camera problem, going to send it in for warranty now. will report back when its fixed
Have you tried a hard reset to see if the problem goes away?
Whenever things start to go wierd, I alway 1)Soft reset 2)If it does not work do a hard reset 3)If still doesn't work, find out if everyone else with the same firmware has the problem 4) Finally, go to the shop for a replacement, it's likely then to be a hardware issue.
If you have 'fring' installed uninstall it and camera will stop failing
Just updated to JM2, I have fring installed, never had such problem even with stock...
Sorry my bad, fring was recently fixed for sgs

Soft reset, hard reset, flashed firmware again. All did not work. Was sent in for repair a few hours ago, they said it would take 2-3 days, had jm2 on it though and where I live the latest firmware is jf4. Hope they don't bother about that. Hoping for the best
Update!
Just got phone back from Samsung after waiting for 4 torturous days, everything seems to be in working order now, the auto focus is still pretty slow though but other than that its great.
So after all it should have just been a hardware problem as the customer service lady told me that they changed the pcb of the camera

HELP PLEASE.... I bought a new Galaxy S Captivate about 3 weeks ago and i think alrealy had the new Android 2.1 with the GPS Fixed. The Camera was working until a few days ago. Every time I start the Camera app, after just 2 or 3 seconds I am getting the Warning message "Camera Failed". I can only press okay and the Camera app closes. I tried many times and it is always the same.
I tried soft reset, and hard reset which errased all my data, and nothing. Today I decided to upgrade to the new Leaked version of the Froyo 2.2 to see if it would help. Nothing helped. I AM STUCK....
I called Samsung 3rd level support and they said that I should send my phone to them for them to REFLASH my phone. If that would not fix they would replace and send another phone to me.
My problem is that I am out of the USA (I am in Brazil now) for the next 3 months, so I would like to find a way to fi via software now.
Since Samsung said that the best way to fix this Camera problem is the FLASH the phone, and only SAMSUNG has this special flashing software, my question is:
1- DOES ANY ONE KNOWS WHER I COULD DOWNLOAD THIS SAMSUNG FLASHING SOFTWARE ? ANY WHAT WHERE I COULD GET THE ROM ORIGINAL CAPTIVATE 2.1 VERSION?
2- I only know this 2 ways to flash or upgrade my phone,
I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.rar (for Android 2.1)
I897UCJI6-OCD-REV02-Low-designgears.exe (for Android 2.2 leaked version)
But I am not sure that this is the SAMSUNG FLASH version that they are talking about , is it?
Where can I find the real Samsung Flash software ? PLEASE HELP
Solved Thanks to Voodoo
Had practically the same problem, Camera failed yet it worked for Video and even in Panorama mode, I didn't install anything new other than some themes from the Market, I tried factory set, removing the battery ... nothing worked, so I disabled OCLF, uninstalled it, and installed Voodoo lag fix instead, that made the trick !! Don't understand why though , but anyways it's working now

Hello
I have been having some problems with the main camera on the A500. It has different tints to it. Sometimes the picture seems to be divided in 4 and all 4 squares have a different hue to them. Restoring to factory settings seem to take care of it for a while. Initially I thought it was "skype" that messed it up, but it is not.
I just restarted the tablet and the camera is giving me a yellow tint, with a clear horizontal stripe about 3/4 inch wide through the middle.
The tab has stock 3.2 on it.
I was wondering if anyone has experienced similar problems and if there was a solution to the problem.
Thank you
Well, I would think the problem seems to be some app/apps you have installed. Based on when you do a factory reset, it goes away.
I would just do another factory reset. Then verify it went away. Run it for a couple of days WITHOUT installing any apps. This will probably rule out a hardware issue.
Then install apps, 1 at a time. Use the camera, and look for issues.
Thanx. I will give that a try.
I traced it back to Swift Key X keyboard for tablets. How is that even possible?
Also yahoo messenger is another one that ruins the camera. As soon as I install any of those apps and reboot, the camera is back to normal.
Does anyone out there use either of those apps?

So, everything is ok?
Rule #1,
Stay away from apps meant for phones.
Yes, they "may" have tested it it on "1" tablet, then gave it a clean bill of health. Maybe.

I thought it would be ok. But after restarting a few times, the camera colors are off. I'm going to root and install a custom 3.2 to make sure it is not the hardware.
Spasiba for all your help )
any news about this problems.
it seems that my iconia has the same problem- i never noticed it because i dont use the rear camera.
i sold it it today and the guy who bought has described something like what you folks are talking about
the strange thing is that i had done a clean boot before i sold it, and the buyer hasnt installed anything on it yet.
im waiting to hear back from him after he tries another clean boot.
anyone else have any ideas ?
I'm having the same problem. I don't use it much, but the camera was ok before. When I tried using it this weekend, it showed colored translucent squares on the sides. It is not a config problem, as there are no effects turned on. The front camera works 100%. I will post a sample when I get home.
If I change the "whites" config to Incandescent, it kind of solves the problem. Sometimes, the squares appear, but not for most the time.
I believe this is not a harware issue, unless that whites configuration is made with hardware (highly doubt it). I don't have Swift key, or Yahoo messenger, or any other apps that use the camera (other than Skype, but it was already installed when the camera worked).
Did anybody find a fix to this? It seems it is only a problem on stock 3.2.
Edit: not an exclusive 3.2 stock issue, it appears that custom roms have this problem as well.
I have the same issue after ICS ota upgrade...
Any ideas?
I haven't had the issue since the ICS upgrade. Only tested once or twice, but it is working properly.
What I did to partially fix it was changing the White Balance to "Incandescent".
I was wondering if anyone else has run into this issue on the N10 as well or if I just got a fluke.
Front / Back camera worked for first 5 minutes out of the box. After going to a different application and trying to get back to camera, camera app fails to connect. Restart tablet, same problem. Force close gallery/camera app, wipe data/cache for the app and re-open. Same error, camera no longer displays at all.
Factory reset, camera works for a few minutes, try to open it again after leaving, crashes the same way. No third party apps can access camera either. Tried many factory resets, even with only gApps installed same camera prob.
Waiting for RMA now, but has anyone else run into this or something similar? :crying:

I had this exact problem on my galaxy nexus. I finally pinned it down to an app that controlled the LED (like a flashlight, or torch app). I removed it and it worked fine after that.
Yup looks to be a 3rd party app since it works after factory reset. I would reset it again but choose not to have it reinstall the apps automatically. Then just do the process of elimination until you find the problomatic app. Worth a shot.

I tried these apps but it's still not working for me. Hope it's not hardware related. It worked the first day I had my nexus.
EDIT: Installing CyanogenMod solved the issue =)
EDIT 2: Well it actually solved it for just a day or two, now it's back!
I'm also having this issue too it seems. Created a post about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2251337 and thought it was related to my rooting of the tablet since it worked okay before I tried that. Currently on 4.2.0 stock and OEM locked and the issues is still there, starting to think it's a hardware issue.

Definitely a hardware issue. I did an RMA with Google ...the new device they sent me has no issues.
Try that if your device is still under warranty! Google is pretty good at getting replacements sent to you within a week!
Turns out it wasn't a hardware issues, the problem I was having was apparently related to the sync of contacts which for some reason completely disabled the camera until such a time as the contacts were synced.
OK guys. Enough for me.
I've been pretty happy with my Nexus device since 4.2. Despite very few minor bugs it had been running absolutely fine.
Then the 4.3 update came and totally, pardon my French, sc***ed everything up.
First of all, the overall experience. Scrolling got much smoother for me. Secondly, that's all.
What got 'broken' was definitely the overall smoothness of the UI. For example, when I click an option in the Settings menu, it takes much longer time for the bluish color that indicates the click to disappear. It isn't only in Settings though. What's more, the click sound is somehow 'laggy'. What I mean by that is when I click something there's a noticeably greater amount of time needed for the sound to be triggered than it was in 4.2.2.
Also, the widgets drawer looks just bizzare for me. Some strange black boxes started to appear since 4.3 update (attachment).
Today, the stock YouTube app got unbearably laggy when scrolling through the list of searched movies.
But today Android has gone full retard. Just look at one of screenshots in attachments; surprisingly enough, the YouTube widget thumbnail looks like... the volume slider!
I've tried clearing data, cache, force stopping the YouTube app, even uninstalling it and going back to stock (+turning it off completely). If I go to stock app, then the thumbnail is fine. But as soon as I update the app... the same thing happens.
Also, while writing this, I noticed that my phone discharged by around 4% despite being plugged to a charger (in AC mode).
Seriously, this isn't an experience I was expecting from a Nexus device, a phone that should be a model for any other Android smartphone.
I wish I could go back to 4.2.2.
It's possible to go back to 4.2.
You just need to download the factory image from Google and flash with fastboot.
But you might try a factory reset before that to see if that solves the problem.

Bump.
Really no one has ever seen such a bizzare OS behavior?
Also, I am not in favor of wiping my device as I have lots of precious personal data stored in it.
I think also that a factory reset may help you.
I think that something went wrong with the update.
