Nexus 7 File copying errors - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I've recently purchased my Nexus 7 and it's a great device, except for an infuriating problem.
Yesterday, I was able to copy files straight to the tablet from Windows. Today, every file hangs at 'calculating' and then proceeds to crash windows explorer and require me to pull out the usb cable.
I have tried usb debugging on/off, renaming the files to give different extensions and still nothing copies over. Only tiny files manage to, at around 600kb each.
TL;DR: I was able to copy multiple file types to my Nexus 7, now I can't copy anything bigger than a tiny photo.
Thanks!

Isn't MTP "great"? Wish Google will get it and bring back to USB Mass Storage.
We all remember how bad file-copying by ActiveSync was and that's why UMS took off as a much more robust solution.

Do you know how to fix the problem though? I can RAR my files and then copy them, but that is impractical.

I've tried using bulk file copy programs, but it says the destination is invalid.
I wonder if that is because the PC reads the Nexus as a media player, and not mass storage.
Has anyone fixed it yet?

Same problem here. WiFi Explorer works to copy the files. Not as fast but worked for me. I use the Pro Version, here's a link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...mNvbS5kb29ibG91LldpRmlGaWxlRXhwbG9yZXJQUk8iXQ..

Have you tried simply renaming the file extension to something different until you get the file transfered over?
I'm stuck at work or I would take a look at it myself.

Have to agree with you, MTP is hopeless. I've tried to copy a Titanium Backup folder numerous times and it never does a complete copy. How pathetic is this!
I've had to resort to using SMB with Ghost Commander and that is very slow! There must be a better way! Help!

mtp is horrific...

Same here. It copies about 70% of the files from the Titanium Backup folder in Nexus7... and then stops (as if completed). But when I check the destination folder on my PC, 30% aren`t transferred. How can we have such pathetic file transfer, in `this` day and age?

Has anyone figured this out yet? I have about 1 Gig of TB files...

Currently copying the files to a separate folder on my computer then cutting those files onto my nexus
7 works for me but is bothersome most of the time.

I just copied a 350Mb folder of files to the N7. It took 30 seconds. Then I copied it back to my desktop and it took 21 seconds. I'm stock, rooted, 4.21, usb debugging on with MTP, using the original usb3 cable plugged into a rear usb port. There must be something else going on with your devices.

I also noticed that problem. But discovered that it only show up when you start "Play music". If you have started the app and would copy something just reboot . works for me!
Nexus 7 32G, European stock rom

I have the same problems as stated before. But i also noted this: when i add a new folder anywhere on the devices memory with Astro, for example a folder with pictures and shortly after i want to copy that folder to my PC. The created folder is missing and nowhere to be found while browsing the device via usb in windows explorer. Even after rebooting the pc and nexus7. Its like the index of files doesn't get refreshed often. When i tried again a few days later, the folder appeared in explorer just fine.

Only time I have seen this problem was when I tried to copy files directly to the root of the storage directory. Try copying to an existing folder on your nexus and see if it still fails.

I shut off my Bluetooth and the problem went away.

Had greater luck with this renaming or, zipping the files. It seems if the file extension isn't recognized as being handled that it will be denied after it finishes copying.

I had the same problem two days ago ... ijust ignored it and the next day everything was working fine ... i guess try restart PC and Tab both

Try this
If you have wifi, try Airdroid! Worked for me! & when the cheapo charging port gets loose, get a "Qi" charging station. Lay your device on it and it charges right through the case, wirelessly.

Trying to copy several, small files from my SD card

Hi,
I’m running into an odd problem.
I have a Google Nexus 7 Tablet. I’ve unlocked and rooted it with the Toolkit. I’m attaching it via USB on a Windows 7, 64 bit system. I’ve installed the PDANet drivers.
I’ve made a back up of my tablet using Titanium Backup. Within the Titanium Backup directory are many small files, that I’d like to copy back onto my desktop for safe keeping.
However every time I copy the directory over to my PC using Windows Explorer, only a fraction of files get copied, I’d say about 20%. I’ve tried it several times, but, can’t seem to get it to do a complete copy. I’ve tried selecting the entire directory and the all the files (select all) without success.
When you plug in the micro USB cable to your tablet, does it automatically go into mass storage mode (though I have selected Mass Storage mode as my option).
I’m coming from several Samsung devices and I know there are a few ways to enable mass storage mode on them, and at a minimum, you have to choose to mount the SD card. Is there something similar with Asus devices?
What am I missing?
Thanks!
I rarely send files via the USB port... normally just use the wifi connection. Just sent all the TI backup files via AndFTP to a server over WiFi and it only a little more than 5 minutes.
I then for the first time, hooked up the N7 to my USB to transfer the files to my notebook.
Didn't make any changes.
Created a new directory on my Notebook (Win7Pro) and then opened the drive on the N7, found the TitaniumBackup directory and selected all the file (not the directory holding them).
Took about 5 mins to move the files which was about the same as the Wifi transfer.
Not errors, and all the files got there.
Not sure if that helps you...
Oh. the N7 is rooted with TWRP recovery on it but otherwise Stock.
BTW.. this morning I tried this app which is a sync app between my workstation at home and the Droid. Worked good enough I upgraded and now have a number of manual syncs setup (droid to computer)

Hi krelvinaz,
Thanks for taking the time to test that for me. I did exactly the same procedure as you. I'll play with it some more and see if it was just a bad driver install or something. Perhaps I'll try it on my laptop at work...
And thanks very much for the link... that app does look promising indeed. I really appreciate that it doesn't sync with the cloud, but with my pc. That's great.
Thanks again for your help!
Update:
Ok, well I tried to copy the same files on my work laptop, which is running XP, and without any additional drivers, and it stopped at exactly the same place, at one particular file.
I then deleted that one backup file, and tried to copy the directly again, and it worked. I then tried again on my Windows 7, 64 bit desktop and it too was successful!
I guess that file was corrupted or something.
I'm glad I figured it out, and thanks again krelvinaz.
I got my N7 today. Just plugged in USB to my computer and copied my "backup-apps" folder and my MP3 folder from my phone. Moved very fast, now I have about 150 .apk's I can install if I have recognition problems with the Play store, and 2000 songs.... using up my "16" gb fast... about time to root and add stickmount.

[Q] Problem with file transfer (connecting to PC)

I've bought a Nexus 7 (32GB) from BestBuy a few days ago. Works perfectly, but I don't like the file transfer method. I've been using the old Archos 32 a long time before, and I've helped a lot of friends with their own Andorid phones. We used to mount and unmount the devices to transfer files to computers. Mounting meant I was not able to use it, but I could transfer files. Now on my Nexus 7, I can do both. At first sight, I was quite happy about that, but I've realized it used similar file transfer methods as my very old 2005 mp3 player. Everytime I dump songs into my tablet, it tells me the file is not supported. I don't care about that, but it didn't used to be as ****ty as that with other Android phones. Quite a disappointment.
Now I started downloading stuff with tTorrent, and files are even more fricked up. I've set my download location as /Download/Torrents, as I used to do before. Back on my PC, I wanted to copy the torrented files, but they weren't there at all. Even at default location. With ASTRO ans ES file managers, I can clearly see they are at the right place. But the PC connection doesn't cooperate. I made a little search, and found out they were all hidden in a /storage/emulated directory on my PC. But only half my downloaded files were there (yeah, about 4GB hidden somewhere).
Now I'm kinda stuck in a trap. Where are my files? Would there be any way to return to the "normal" mount/unmount transfer system? I tried the MTP and PTP thing but both are weird and hide my downloaded files. I can't transfer files my files again via WiFi as we don't have much bandwidth up here in Canada. Computer doesn't support Bluetooth (and neither NFC lol). I just want the old file system back. Anyone has already faced the same situation or could help? Thanks in advance.

Some Files Not Showing After Update to 6.0.1

I am not rooted. I can access my phone through Windows 10. But I cannot see all my folders. The 2 that I am having problems with are my Camera and Music folders. Some of the files are there. When I use ES File Explorer I can see and access them fine. Right now I cannot pull off any of the photos or videos I take. This all happend after upgrading to 6.0.1. I have tried 2 different cables and 2 different computers with the same results. I have made sure that USB Debugging is enabled. I also made sure that I had PTP and MTP enabled. Also upgraded to the latest 6P drivers for Windows 10. Any ideas?
I'm having this issue on 6.0. I'm thinking it was a Windows update that caused the problem rather than a Google one. Yes, I've got good drivers, stock cable, MTP. Tried on Win7/10, USB 2.0 and 3.0 The Music/Photo files/Folders are on the device, but unable to be seen via PC Explorer. If I try and copy an existing music subfolder from PC to the 6P's /Music folder, I get an error, but I can copy a folder to the 6p if it's not already there.

Same on Nexus 6P, on 6.0.1 (but not on 6.0). I'm trying to copy some photos to my PC (Windows 10) and my PC sees the DCIM folder but none of the files inside of it. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers through Nexus root toolkit but still no luck I rebooted both the phone and my PC, no luck. It does let me put files into the DCIM folder and it can see them after disconnecting and reconnecting. I also tried MTP, PTP and USB debugging and none worked. I guess I'll wait for the next Android update and keep using pushbullet.
I'm having a similar issue except not on 6.0.1. Can't view photos I've taken last Sunday but all my November photos are showing via MTP. My moto x had this same issue where recent photos wouldn't show. My PC is running Ubuntu, not Windows.
I just performed a factory reset. Windows 10 now sees both folders. Hopefully they will roll out a fix soon.
All I did was change USB from charging to File Transfer and all my folders are showing in Windows 10, fully updated and my 6p on 6.0.1, just flashed it
This solution worked for me. Clean cache and data files for the external storage app and media storage app. After rebooting, the files will be rebuilt (may take a couple of minutes) and then you will see your files again. I did it and the 1st to show up was my music folder then all of the other folders. At first, I had no folders (kind of freaked me out) but they started to show up one by one. Good luck.

By doing this will you lose any of your files?
I didn't.
The 'Clean cache and data files for the external storage app and media storage app' solution worked for me on my Zenphone 2. Files didn't appeared right after reboot, took a couple minutes and they gradually showed up. Didn't lose anything.
Many thx!
Somehow digging up this "old" thread.
Tried above "Media Storage" and "External Storage" system apps data/cache wiping solution, ended up seeing even less folders/files on PC !
Real solution given today by @AzraelsKiss :
Reboot under recovery (TWRP for me, I guess other recoveries would just work the same), plug your phone into PC, all the phone's folders/files will be visible using PC file explorer just as it's an external HD !

Unable to backup to computer

Wanted to backup internal storage to pc, which I have done several times before but doesn't seem to work at all now.
Windows 7, have adb drivers installed. Tried copying files thru adb pull, copy on twrp mode and normal mode to pc but it doesn't copy all files and folders.
Have tried installing Huawei drivers and same results.
What am I doing wrong?

Will try a different system and/or cable.
Which app did you use if i may ask?

I'm glad I searched a little more; I was about to start a thread but since my problem parallels yours fairly closely, I'll post here as well.
My problem has been trying to transfer nandroid backups from my twrp folder onto my PC. My drivers are functional and everything; my PC has no problem identifying my nexus, and my nexus is available (once plugged into my PC) to be opened, where I can view the files. I simply went to my twrp folder where my backups were and I tried just dragging them into a folder I had created on my desktop.
At first it just gave me a short, simple error message. So I created a couple folders within this folder, each with the name of the corresponding backups I have saved on my phone. I tried copying the files one at a time, and realized it was the very first file (boot.something.win) that was the only one unable to be transferred... The other file sections from the backup seem to have no problem.
I ran into similar issues with my type-c flash drive when I tried moving the backups onto it. It left out the first file, and changed another one of the files-- I'll try and grab some picks, or at least find out specifically what changes were made.
Running resurrection remix 5.7.3 with elemental x kernel.
Boot your phone to recovery then plug it into the computer and then u can copy your TWRP Backup's to computer fine.
This is how I do it

Niiiice, yeah I will try that and see what happens. For some reason it wouldn't transfer to my type c flash drive i n recovery, but we'll see. Actually now that I think about it, I might not have ever gotten around to trying that yet, either.
'Preciate it brother.
Sometimes i cant get files to transfer. Ive had to bluetooth them.

File transfer not working properly

Hello guys, i've got some problem with file transfer both in pc to op5 and op5 to pc with USB, i don't know why but apparently the problem affect only medium to big files. I can transfer little files like jpg, while i have some problem with mp3, sometime work sometime not, if i insist generally work. If i try with huge files like the OTA now that i'm trying to upgrade the oxygen is not working at all. I suppose the drivers are properly installed since i can open the folders inside pc. Obviously the debug usb is active, i tryed to enable mtp in developer option (is normal that there isn't any mtp selection in the four transfer available? even if enabled mtp i still see "recharge" "file transfer" "photo transfer ptp" "midi"). I usually select file transfer, i don't even know what MIDI is and ptp is only about photos. The phone is rooted with the last official twrp and last magisk, the os is OOS 4.5.8. and is still encrypted. PC is with windows 10
edit: i can't even copy/paste those big files from a folder inside the phone to another one always in the phone.

Might be a long shot but try doing a simple restart of your phone and computer and see if that helps
