Nexus 7 Screen not responding to touch sometimes? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I recently bought the Nexus 7, and honestly, for $200 I couldn't be happier. However, there is one minor issue with the Nexus 7. Randomly, touches will stop registering, and sometimes things like the power button will cease to function as well. After a while, everything will start working again as if nothing had happened earlier. However, recently, I've been seeing a force close in random apps (sometimes launcher, sometimes settings) as soon as it starts working again. Although I am rooted right now, I've experienced the same issues on a purely stock OS as well. Is anyone else experiencing the same issues? Can anyone offer any advice?
Thanks so much.

i am in the same boat. i am NOT rooted (yet) and i am wondering if this might be a warranty issue. the screen just stops responding all of a sudden and takes multiply presses to make it move. it comes back but keeps missing touches. a restart certainly fixes that but it will happen again.

Same issue here with random unresponsiveness calling both Google and Gamestop to see what option is best for me.

Same here. A GPlay rep said a factory reset should correct it.
Havent done it yet

Having the same issue. A hard reboot fixes it temporarily but it happens again after a few hours.

Saw a YouTube video on this a couple of days ago. There are a ton of them there now. Here's just an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BOTU75DBUA. Some other guy had done more elaborate testing, but can't find that one right now. It seems like a widespread problem. Do you notice this happens when the unit gets hot perhaps? Just curious... The guy in the other video said that it'd go away each time by simply turning off the screen and turning it back on... but that's not normal obviously.

Just turning off the screen and waking it back up usually "fixes" it for me...its happened about 3 times already...

I get it sometimes but it feels more like it's lag related then the screen.

.. No same issue. I'd search for you but I don't care to on a mobile device.

The issue(s) that I'm experiencing is random touch screen unresponsiveness/ lagg. So I repeat this is not about dead spots or multi touch issues.
Feel free to link other threads with similar issues to this, I've searched but only find dead spots, multi touch issue, screen crackling and dead screens.

I think that the touch srceen firmware was broken, just wait the OTA next time, and ASUS will fix it.

I think the two issues being described here are the same issue, just being described in different words

Same Screen Issue
The screen on my Nexus 7 is randomly becoming unresponsive and I have to restart the tablet. It is usually happening after using apps that are video memory intensive (Google Earth, Google+). I hope Google or Asus will fix this issue because I love the tablet and I would hate to send it back.

I have the same issue. Usually it happens when a resource hog is running in the background. It is annoying but I can deal if its infrequent.
Sent from one of my devices, you nosey bastards.

I think it may be hardware related. My first N7 had this issue and I exchanged it (albeit for other reasons). My new unit has had zero problems, even when running the same apps. Draw something and chrome were the biggest culprits before.

+1. When it becomes unresponsive, I briefly press the power button to shut the screen off, then turn the screen back on and for me that solves it 90% of the time. The remaining 10% of the time, well, it's just frozen so I long-press the power button to reboot the tablet.

My son and I have experienced this too. It seems to happen most frequently with games. However, sometimes when I go to Settings->Apps, it will go to its "Happy Place" and freeze up for a while. Letting it sit will eventually cause a dialog to pop up asking if I want to close it because it is not responding. I'm thinking that it's a software issue because even when I've been playing games, the Nexus isn't very hot. Is there a way to file a bug report with Google?

I had this issue when I received my replacement 7.
After I did a system update and the issue has not returned. I received my replacement on 07-27.
I would suggest trying to do a system update and see if that may help.
Edit:
Removed the Build Number, as I can not remember which BN shipped with the replacement.

Where are these "many people", because I have also never heard this one?
Not saying it's not true, but I'm pretty active reading most of the major threads and haven't seen this as an issue before.
I would try flashing a different ROM just to make sure it's not a bad flash. If that doesn't clear it up, you can be sure that it's hardware related.
I had the same issue with my first vibrant. Call tmobile and get a replacement.

I experience this every once in awhile. I really think its just lag. I find myself pressing my back and menu button multiple times. But its usually when I have multiple apps running at the same time. But its not often of enough to call it broken. It was a orginal hardware lock phone.
I have this issue with the menu button sometimes. It doesn't feel like lag because the buttons don't even light up. Seems to be more prevalent on froyo roms.
***Swyped onto XDA via Vibrant***
So the conclusion is that its a software issue or hardware?
This problem does exist maybe not with the majority of users.. but I too suffer from this problem every now and then. Sometimes my home button will work flawless and sometimes it can be a pain in the ass!! literally becoming unresponsive to the point of multiple taps in order to get some response. I'm sure its not lag because this even takes place at the home screen with literally nothing going on in the background.
Had the exact same issue, it is software. In my case I've been using the Zeam launcher, it was NOT Zeam at fault, rather the Gingerbread Launcher Free that came loaded with my ROM. I found a post with the same symptoms from someone who was using LauncherPro. After removing the unused launcher (Gingerbread Launcher free) and rebooting the home key is behaving just as it should.
im willing to bet its not the same for everyone
if you have a screen protector on (such as realook), i guarantee that is your issue
In my case, it was the overclock settings with Setcpu. remove overclock to see if ok on yours.

After recent firmware update, tablet freezes

After recent update, within 24hrs, my transformer has frozen completely three times. This is where I have to hold down the power 10+ sec and turn the unit back on. One time, about 40min watching a video via hbogo website. One playing a game (walkabout) and another time, just playing mp3 from the main screen via a widget.
Has anyone else experience this? Never happened on prior firmware versions.
Keyboard flash problem
I don't know if this can help: after firmware upgrade my browser crash if i try to tipe something in a flash animation, keyboard isn't show and then crash.
Exactly the same experience here: with 3.01 I had no problems at all; since OTA update 3.1 two days ago 'sleep of death' (shutdown in sleep mode) all the time!
Very annoying, according to other threads/ forums SOD was SOLVED for couple of guys with 3.1 update - I just received my SOD with 3.1!
Thanks Asus; I do hope someone/ somewhere is working on a fix!
In the meanwhile: any help/ solution for SOD (except downgrading/ rooting) would be very wellcome!
TF101, US, stock 3.1 unrooted
Same here with some Apps. MyLibrary was working fine on a pdf, now it freezes and crash all the time. Impossible to read anything anymore.
Battery seems to be drained faster too.
Since I have gotten the update the tablet is very sluggish. It was perfect before. I had no light bleed and it was very smooth. Now I have a ton of light bleed and it is so sluggish it almost takes 4 mins to connect to the internet. Anyone know the customer support number?

software has nothing to do with your hardware screen showing more lightbleed, other than if the brightnessis higher which may show it better.

I don't disagree, but the fact is that I didn't see it before now it is terrible. I thought I had a "good one". Oh well.
In general last update has improved performance, allows more variety ( file types) in video streaming from my server, slightly better browser performance and slightly better wifi reception, however I have noticed a few lock ups that were not there before last update. Long Power button hold required to recover.
I'm having the freeze problem in Firefox after the update. it will work for a bit, but some sites will cause the tablet to lock up and I have to do the power off reboot. The stock browser is working fine.
On another forum they were saying it's pure superstition, but..: turning OFF the auto brightness has prevented sleep of death on my Transformer (SODs since update 3.1) allready about a day!
I know people say it's nonsense, but for anyone else struggling with auto shutdown in sleep mode problem; give it a try!

I've had four freezes, all in Press Reader tablet edition, and was thinking they were related to that app specifically, but maybe not. Reason being, my wife got her first freeze last night playing angry birds.
My freezes in Press Reader are not caused by the update, though, as two of them happened before the update was released. Also, I've discovered though that it is only the UI that is freezing, because on one freeze I had internet radio playing, and it kept playing for multiple minutes after the UI for froze.
More on my Press Reader freezes here:

Do freeze issues go away if you clear all caches / factory reset?
Reason I ask, is this has helped me in the past, so I always do one, including right after this recent OTA update...

Huh, I've not had any problems. My 32gb TF is a B50, and dock is a B60. I usually have it connected to the dock.
I've had my ASUS Transformer for about 4 days now, never had any freezes yet, not with nor without the update (updated yesterday).

Can't speak to the other people, but I'm not trying because it's such a [email protected]*dy hassle to do a factory reset, when there's no way to back everything up in one go without root access.
Backup is definitely a major shortcoming of Android.
+1 to the sleep of death issue aft the 7/16 update. Screen will go off and tablet will either reboot or need a reboot.
I have had my auto brightness off since day 1, kept default brightness, and have been lucky with no issues. Still on 3.1.

Try changing the rom and kernel. The Netformer kernel seems the fastest and smoothest. I had the screen freezes also. Running Clem's v3rom for 8.4.4.11 then flashed the Netformer over instead of using Clem's kernel.

We're not talking sleep of death here, we're talking lockups while the tablet is active. Totally different issue, or at least totally different symptom.

[Q] How many of you are experiencing SOD issues on the Nexus 4?

Hello everyone,
I would like to know how many of you are experiencing the different kinds of SOD on the Nexus 4.
I found few references to the SOD issue, but no one could tell exactly why this is happening.
Some say it's a software issue (some say it only started to occur at JB)...
Some say it's an hardware issue.. some of them RMAed, and got a new phone with exactly the same SOD issue.
I would like to dedicate this thread to this problem and see how many other Nexus 4 users are experiencing this SOD.

Never had one so far. Running stock 4.2.2/Franco kernel nightly_110
-Edit- currently undervolted -75 mV.
just stop messing your phone up with stupid OCing and benchmarks... This issues are installed to protect the hardware from crashing... ( Red light of death... )
My phone just fine. never had this SOD.
Never had an issue on this device. On my old phone, dropping the min CPU speed too low would cause it a LOT.

You don't have an option for unable to turn on phone without a reset: no blinking led. This is also a scenerio.
Please take a look here! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2195278
I've tried almost everything (wipe& re wipe , install stock ) and nothing seem to solve it.... most frustatin thing is when I hit "home" after playing heavly and ...bamm it goes black screen & hav to reboot pressin home&vol+
Are you using a custom kernel to undervolt? That can cause SOD.

Im using it now (customROM&UV) since it doesnt affect my issue.... I tried completly stock for 2 days and keep crashin... or at least on g.earth as I didnt install any app/game to be sure its not an app related issue.
Cant figure out what happens, it can play games w/o any issue, but sometimes when I change orientation it just goes black
PD: I dont hav enough time, but ill do a logcat to see what can possibily make it freeze
My case is not listed in the poll options:
- the phone went into standy, good battery, no calls, no high loads;
- LED was inactive totally.
- then I was unable to turn it on normally (only through reboot).
While in this state, trying to call the phone resulted in "long" tones, i.e., like the network saw the phone. The phone did not ring.
This happens with the latest stock firmware on the 2nd day of my use. Non-reproducible. Phone returned.
Would be delighted to learn if that's a hardware or software issue
Not necessarily SOD but experienced extreme battery drain under these situations
1- Charging via USB and left phone connected after PC shut down.
2- Charging via Wireless Charger left it on the pod.
In 1st ASA pc is shut down
and
In 2nd ASA Phone charged completely , as I suspect the charging process goes backwards ! It someone drain current from your battery to the power source.
AFAIK none of these issue are positive with normal good old AC charging. However you can still use a workaround by using the app called "Safe Charge"
This is my experience

Can google access your phone without knowing?

So I just purchased the 6p and right away I entered the beta program, so now I'm on Android 7.0. Right from the start I noticed my phone would not enter landscape mode at all. Not in YouTube, other apps, playing videos in Chrome. Some apps would act all wonky and I was considering downgrading back to what the phone had originally. But before I did I decided to send a feedback form with my phone logs and a quick memo of what I was experiencing.
Well, probably 10 hours later my phone suddenly started working correctly! Now landscape works everywhere and a couple apps I was having problems with work as they should. I felt relieved initially but now that I think about it, did google somehow access my phone and update something? It just seemed to specifically fix the problems I was having.
It's the Android man inside your phone. You send a log as feedback or you think you do but in reality this said "log" is dropped on the Androids head to wake him up. During the impact he learns of your issue through osmosis and gets right to work. Cuz you see sleep is the Androids favorite thing to do. So he's very eager to get your issues resolved to return to his slumber. True story.....
Sent from my Nexus 6P using XDA-Developers mobile app
If you're using Pokemon Go, that's causing the 6p to have rotation issues - goes away once you reboot the phone.
I had a 6P that Google Replaced because the Gyroscope starting acting up and would not switch into landscape. Next time it happens give it a whack on your thigh, if it fixes the problem then you know what the cause is.
And I have been playing Pokemon Go since launch day and have not experienced any issue with auto rotate.

Random Wonky Issues Becoming Regular Occurrences

Hi Everyone.
I've been having random issues with the phone since I got it. Over the last several weeks, these random issues;
1. SiriusXM or any Audio App shuts down when listening through headphones - yet less often if just through the phone's speaker.
2. Phone disconnects during conversations in places that have full strength reception and never were/are issues with any other phone.
3. Video (YouTube or phone-recorded) playback will randomly stop playing.
4. Streaming (very rarely done) will fail as well.
None of these things happen for anything text or e-mail related, so I "ass-u-me" there's a glitch in some part of the phone that handles anything audio related.
I seem to be alone with this issue - but I've only gone back 5 pages in this forum to look for similar issues with others. Do you guru's think I've a warrantee issue, or is there something I'm missing.
Not Rooted, Stock Unit on Verizon.
Thanks all!
Have you tried running the phone in safe mode to see if there isn't a app in the background causing this?

Thanks for the tip Evo. I did as instructed and there's no app running.
So I took the phone down to Verizon and thankfully, I happened twice while with the Tech there. He immediately offered to send me another under warranty.
Sadly ... the replacement has an incredible amount of light-leak-spray from the 2nd screen. Bad enough that it's visible in semi-dark rooms, so I'll be sending that back for them to try again.
Thanks again for responding Evo ... I had completely forgotten about Safe Mode - even though it didn't provide a solution, it's tips like these that make this place great and I appreciate your reply.
I also have the same issue as you. streaming or music player or youtube in general will just stop working for no reason even my data randomly dies out and its unlimited. I'm with t-mobile think ima get it excahnged or a different phone in general. have you found any solutions at all other then exchanging phones. please let me know
