Can I move the soft buttons to the middle of the screen? - Kindle Fire General

The case I use with my kindle fire obscures the back button and I would love to move those buttons to the middle. Am I able to do this?

Yeah get one of the Jellybean ROMS. or if you're on ICS you can change the pixel density in the build.prop to 213.

Hashcode's AOSP Jellybean ROM has this. Jandycane's doesn't.

I just wiped and installed Jellybean. I am liking it more than ICS anyway!

Porting Kindle Fire-like soft keys to CM7?

I wonder if it's a good idea to port the softkey in Kindle Fire to CM7 for Nook color. I feel the softkey on Kindle fire is quite nice, not disturbing but easy to call up when you need it. I use CM7 on my NC now but feel the soft key there is not as friendly as KF's.
I don't know whether someone would do that, or interested enough to do that. I know nothing about cooking a rom and porting features to a rom. Just think it's quite a nice piece for device without hard keys.
Anyway, I think I will use Honeycomb or ICS soon on my NC, so probably it will not be a problem there.
I'm curious. What exactly do you dislike about the cm7 soft keys?

I wish you could have the menu button come up after the back button.
back button seems to be the button you use 8-10 times.
also, a larger width, spacing and more vertical pixels on the button and softbutton taskbar would be ideal. CM7 softkeys are too small on 7 inch tablet device
I can click them just fine and think the size is comfortable.

with cm9 just around the corner and nativ soft key support....well it wilk not happen

I'm not familiar with the Kindle Fire, or its interface, but what you're describing sounds a lot like SoftKeys, Button Savior or Virtual Button Bar.
Alternately, if interface elements are too small, crank up your screen density to 190 dpi or higher. At 240, they're REAL easy to hit.

I used the Fire for a little bit, and I believe the soft-buttons were part of a collapsible interface. That may be their main draw.
They weren't "always there" like with CyanogenMod or ICS. You tap some thin-strip with a graphic at the bottom of the screen to get the Back/Menu/Home button, or you tap the thin-strip at the top of the screen to get the Volume/brightness/WiFi toggle buttons.
I like the idea of having all those there, but I'm also a big fan of physical buttons, especially for Volume.

It's not I don't like CM7 soft keys. I just feel Fire's soft key is quite different and and more simple

Yes, the deal for me is the collapsible interface, the thin-line doesn't take too much space on the screen but also easy to be called up when needed.
Talking about physical buttons, I love the keyboard on T-mobile G1, still using it for message.

[Q] Possible to move soft keys yet?

I have seen several posts with this question, but none with answers. Has anyone found a way to move the soft keys to one side or another? I keep hitting them when I type (did it while typing this ironically). Never did make sense to me to have a touch sensitive home button right underneath one of the most often used buttons on the typing board. In any case, I have scoured the net looking for an answer and can't find one. Any know if I missed it somewhere? Thanks in advance.
Try a tablet mod ROM, it has the navigation keys bunched up in the bottom left corner. Hope this helps.
Where?
Appreciate the info. Where do I find that one? I have seen a lot of different ROMs for N7, but nothing denoted as "tablet ROM" and none that have mentioned moving the soft keys as a feature.

Sorry for the n00b questions, but this is my first tablet...where do I change that? I have looked though the settings and have not seen a place to do that. I am running a rooted but (almost) stock ROM. (Manually loaded 4.1.2) And will that change the rest of the viewing area?

Lazarus there is alternatives as well. Team EOS rom allows you to completely hide the softkey interface. I eventually went with gmd gesture control which allows you to hide/show the keys at the flick of your hand, as well as much, much more.
Try the lite version here

This looks like an awesome little app. But I don't see where to hide the nav bar. Is that one of the Pro features? (It is a sweet little app either way.)

This sends me back to JB 4.1.1 though doesn't it? I have already upgraded to 4.1.2 (Though at this point I could not tell you what the difference is other than home screen rotation.) I didn't know 4.1.1 well enough to know it. Only had the tablet a few days.

Might be, it definitely is available in the pro version though.

is it possible to remap icons or buttons

Is it possible to remap the quicknav keys to go to the adw launcher home, or remap the 'currently reading' icon to go to the adw launcher home?
the nook home or nook search have no use to me - it would be more useful to remap these to adw launcher home or one of the other apps.
this is for NSTGL
you can do it with "Nook Touch Tools" app .
I have NSTGL - Nook Touch Tools doesn't work with NSTGL
at the moment I am using button savior to switch from Nook to ADW - but would dearly love to do away with Button Savior.

Come on, dude (dudette?).
You didn't even need to search for this one, just to read all the topics on the front page. In your defense...I only achieved this yesterday, and not everything is working, but:

This dudette is a mom to five kids, ages 3 to 14.
I have read through the entire post you referred to, and am not clear on the steps to be taken.
Can you clarify them for me? I would be most grateful.

LOL, sorry, I just didn't know what to go with there. Everything else sounded old fashioned (ma'am? gal?) - pray don't take it personally
I'm not sure what it is you already know how to do. Do you have adb set up on your computer?
yes - adb is setup and running (and kids are in bed
thanks for your assistance!
My solution was just to modify android.policy.jar so that the "n" button does what a Home button should.
I don't use any "Tools" or QuickNav.
I leave "Last Read" as it was.
I keep planning on making an installable patch for this but never get around to it.
Renata,
Can you explain more fully how to modify android.policy.jar and what you modified it to?
Thanks.

[Q] Some very simple questions!

Hi
Got my £29 Nook ST delivered on Friday to complement my Kindle Keyboard 3G which we use a lot.
Originally I intended to use the Nook in its vanilla flavour, but having read that rooting was possible and the Kindle app worked, thought I'd keep all of my reading in the same place by installing the Kindle app.
So far I've done the following:-
- rooted successfully (NST 1.2.1)
- installed Gapps successfully
- installed the Kindle app by browsing play.google.com and "pushing" it to the NST
- sync'd up my books and read a few on the Nook.
I'm no programmer, but I have rooted both of my other Android devices, as well as installed custom roms and kernels on my phone, so in general things going sweetly and as expected.
There are a couple of simple questions I'd like to post though which will help me (and perhaps others) speed through the process of getting the device into a truly workable format
1) I installed the Kindle App via the play store - thus this is the latest version I suppose. Is there a "better" older version for using on the NST which will bring any benefits?
2) If I choose one of the launches (stock or ReLaunch) as the default, will I lose the ability to get back to the menus?
3) Is there a list of what the various button mapping options from Nook Touch Mod mean? They don't appear to make much sense, though I have successfully modified the page ups and page downs to be volume up and down, which works OK with the Kindle reading app
4) Do I need to have an SD card permanently in the NST for storage, or is that not necessary for books?
5) If all I want to do on the NST is either read books using the Kindle app or read books using the NST's core functionality, is there a neat and tidy way of hiding the ReLaunch launcher etc? Its all usable to me, but I could see my family getting a little stuck when using it, certainly compared to the simplicity of using the stock app or using my Kindle Keyboard
6) Some of the rendering of the font from the Kindle app looks a little less than precise. What can I do to improve this?
Thanks in advance for the help!

Not that I know of. Ask questions on specific options. You can use the Tap Left and Tap Right instead of Volume up/down so that the hardware page up/down buttons work for both the stock NST reader and the Kindle app.

Use NTMM to map your n button long press to ReLaunch. Then when you short press the n button and the B&N quicknav comes up tap on Home then click on the use as default checkbox and select Home. Now your NST looks like stock unless you long press the n button to get into ReLaunch. You could also remap one of the quicknav buttons to Kindle if others want to use Kindle without going through Relaunch.

I think I was meaning between the "ReLaunch" launcher and the "Stock" launcher. i.e. if I restrict myself to using one, how to I access the other.
Thanks for the rest of your help!

By the stock launcher you mean Home I assume. In any case use NTMM to assign a hardware button to whatever you don't want to be the default launcher and set what you do as the default launcher. I described how to make Home the default and still have access to ReLaunch in my previous post answering another of your questions. I'd recommend always assigning ReLaunch to some hardware button just in case you accidentally make something else the default you can get back to ReLaunch to fix things.

I always found that the launcher you chose as default is not persistent... that by power cycling you'd get a choice again. Could be just mine though?

If you check the box to use the launcher as default before selecting the launcher then it will persist across power cycles. That's how it works for me and there are a few threads here about people who have selected a default and can't get back to ReLaunch having to factory restore and reroot.

[Q] Did the menu position change for Android for an update or something?

My menu position is at the top right now, where it used to be on the bottom. I liked it better at the bottom. I did switch phones, I came from an S III that had Paranoid Android 3.99RC2 on it, and now have a LG G2 with the most recent CM11 nightly on it. So, is the menu button a CM thing, or a Kit Kat thing? Or was the bottom menu a PA thing? I want to put it back at the bottom if there is a way to do that.
Also, another unrelated question, is there a way to make the home button also the 'most recent' button by holding it down?
For the second question, to deal with it for now, I just put the side menu button on at all times and put the recent activity button where I usually put the menu button, but I'd still like to have it back to the setup I am used to.

There is no front touch buttons in display. There is "buttons and layout" in interface, but I can't make it change to hold the home button to be a function.

you could try xposed framework and get g2 xposed from the playstore, note sure it itll work on aosp roms

You might want to double check the G2 Xposed thread. I'm 99% certain he's made it work with AOSP ROMs now.
