My daughter got a new Kindle Fire as a birthday gift over the weekend, and we’re trying to figure out which ROM to put on it. She has an Android phone, so her primary purpose of ROMing the Kindle Fire is to access the Google Play store and to be able to sync all of her other Google services... Books, Music, Apps, Gmail, Calendar, Talk, etc…
We’re not necessarily looking for the latest/greatest, but we are mostly interested in…
Most Stable & Bug Free (we don't plan on changing often)
Closest to Vanilla Android (no themes)
Does anybody have any suggestions?
Honestly a rooted kindle fire and Go launcher app will get you the least fuss and closest to an android phone without losing the Amazon functionality.
However, if you want to go ROM and are looking for most stable the Cynogen Mod 7 roms are the most stable and will be exactly like having an android phone.

Thank you... and honestly, we don't care much about keeping the Amazon functionality. If I knew magic, I would simply turn the Kindle Fire into a Nexus 7 and be done with it. But, we'll work with what we've got!

cm7 is nice, because it is stable, but myself, i prefer the latest and greatest.

I downloaded the Kindle Fire Utility and read the KFFB Guide this morning... just trying to figure out which ROM to go with.
Personally I recommend an ICS rom. CM7 is good but it is getting outdated. Jellybean is also good but still has bugs. ICS does not have any major bugs and is a lot smoother than CM7. I suggest either the SGT7 based rom by twa_priv, Glazed ICS, or gedeROM.
When you ask me the cm9/ SGT7 based rom by twa_priv,
Or cm10/jelly bean rom based on SGT7 by twa_priv.
If you need to use Amazon's services, check out the MoDaCo ROM. It is the stock rom, but has preinstalled, the Play Store, as well as other things.
If you would like to use ICS, check out GedeROM as it is based on Cyanogen Mod 9 and has lots of features such as advertisement blocking and Beats audio as well as limited support for USB OTG.
If you want it to look like a Nexus 7, you can always install a Jelly Bean ROM. I'm using the Jandycane ROM.
twa_priv's jelly bean Rom is pretty stable. I use it and haven't had any problems.

Thanks everyone... I got Hashcode's Jellybean installed last night, and it's running great. However, now my daughter is telling me that she misses the way her Kindle Fire looked before the ROM... teenagers! So, I might have to redo it and give MoDaCo that jji7skyline recommended.

Modaco is pretty good. I personally like the real android interface better but it's her kindle not mine.

I second the MoDaCo recommendation. It gives the best of both worlds, full Amazon integration with performance enhancements, root and GAPPS! I've tried many of the ICS ROMs and the charging / battery life issues are just a deal breaker for me as it seriously hampers usability. I also have yet to see an ICS ROM that implements decent 2D video acceleration...try using Zite on an ICS ROM vs stock/MoDaCo, it's buttery smooth on stock and so slow scrolling on ICS that it's nearly unusable (and that's with the 1.2 Ghz overclock).

I ended up installing MoDaCo over the weekend. My daughter was out of town, so she hasn't given me her feedback yet. But, I played around with it and liked it quite a bit.
The only thing that bugs me is the low resolution icons from the Play Store that show up in the carousel. The Play Store icon itself seems to be high resolution, but the icons from downloaded apps look pretty bad when enlarged by the carousel.
In the next coming days ill be running into your same situation. Younger sis got a kindle fire for her birthday. Am planning to root and install her a good ICS Rom. A stable one, as I will not have free time to wipe cache and debug everytime something happens. My kindle fire has the Modaco Rom. I can tell you from my experience that the modaco has several downsides, as I see it. As u mentilned the carousel icons are hectic but bearable. One more problem is the gapps are all outdated like youtube and the browser is sub par compared to chrome.
I just wish I can flash nexus 7's Rom right on top

This is good advice. CM10 ROMs still have Location Services issues and the occasional widget loss on reboot. If you want everything to work nicely grab twa_priv's CM9 ROM. If you want Jelly Bean and can wait a few weeks it's likely a good idea to wait. Remember, for us half the fun is gettng the latest and greatest and fiddling with getting stuff to work. For your daughter you really just want it to work.

Personally speaking I'd go for an optimized stock or CM7, MIUI is not a tablet ROM, IMHO it's a poor man's iOS copy.
CM7 is faster and funnily enough more reliable, however the draw of the Amazon side of it has brought me back to an optimized stock.

I think I agree about optimized stock. I have been checking out the ICS ROM, and it is pretty slick....but for every day use I think I am staying with optimized stock.
MoDaCo gr6 with go launcher is a great Combo.
I am using CM7 and i love it. I didn't like kindle stock, though. so if you like that, i would just get an optimized stock.
CM7 is more android tablet, like.
as far as i know, MIUI is pretty much iOS but for android. it looks cool, but CM7 seems to be better.
But, when ICS finally works, it's going to blow the others out of the water.
It's in beta right now, and has some bugs, but they're going to fix those before the final release.
if you want to try that one, it's a good idea.
it's very pretty, and the most Tablet-like.
I'm switching to it the second final release comes out.
I like CM7 for every day use. Modified stock was good, but would not connect to AD-hoc wifi wireless tether running on my phone. ICS looks and feels great, but still has some issues.

I think I'm going to try Cm7, and If I won't like it, then MIUI, and if I won't like it, Ill go back to stock ROM.
Just keep in mind that MIUI IS Chinese so if you trust them with your credit card information and personal info go for it

CM7 is great. I had my Fire all of 2 days before rooting and installing CM7. Not one problem with it. Once CM9 (ICS) is fully functional, I'll gladly switch.

Miui takes so much work to set up and ive never been able to keep it for more than a day before i vomit all over the device when i realize i just built an iphone lookalike. Then i make a beeline for the cleansing Wipe.
Miui vs cm7 is like asking which is better a piece of **** vs sweet honey laced bacon The question should be cm7 vs cm9. And thats a hard one to choose they are both so good and unique.

I've had my kindle fire rooted and played around with things here and there on it but am ready to make the jump and install a rom on it to get close to the full android functionality i have on my phone. I have read a few of the ROM threads but am having trouble deciding which one to install. I see multiple cm7 ones, multiple ICS ones, etc. I'm having a hard time figuring out the difference on them.
I am looking for the ROM that is the most stable. I mainly use my kindle for watching movies on netflix and google videos while traveling, reading in the kindle app, surfing the web, and playing a game or two here and there.
Recommendations?

I'm kind of in the same boat but tried cm7 barebones, modaco custom, hashcode, and miui blaze..I think I have one of the cm7's (with ics theme) on it now since I watch movies from vlc interface (from pc) and movies on my sdcard. I never did use the kindle for kindle cause day one, I rooted it and start putting roms on it . So i don't know what software to use for books (audio books too).
I love MoDaCo. I prefer the stock look since I already have an Android phone. It's been rock solid.

While I personally use CM9 on mine, I'd have to agree with Lithium. I used Modaco's from from day 1 of purchasing my kindle up until last Friday when I flashed CM9. Its a great, rock solid ROM with just the right number of tweaks.
Plus, if you really want to stray a little further from stock launcher just get ADW or something of the sort.

suggestion to the kindle rom developers out there-
it seems to me that its a tougher to get an idea of the features, problems, etc with some of the rom in the kindle forum (including a few suggested in this thread) than the other ones ive been in (epic 4g primarily). Seems like the first posts for the kindle roms are from when the rom first started and the developers keep describing most of the new features and problems in later posts instead of updating the first post. makes it hard to decide if you want to try the rom if you have to read through 30 pages of posts to get a feel for all the features and issues with the rom. most of the roms i have looked at for my phone had screenshots and long lists of all the features and any ongoing issues with the rom.

For ICS rom, I have tried the Hashcode Zone one but after flashed the rom, my fire just stuck at the booting animation......so I have only flashed CM7 right now.
Personally I love running whistletop's cm7, it runs super smooth for me, and most importantly HW acceleration works as well as all video (flash, HD YouTUbe), which you currently loose with CM9 until the devs get HW acceleration working. Until then, I'm sticking with CM7.
I've been running Whistlestop's CM7 since late January and it's been great-- no wifi issues, SOD, etc. I'm holding out for hardware video acceleration (and hopefully USB OTG) before I move on to ICS.

ICS CM9 Kang ROM Themed recommendation
Since yesterday I am using the ICS CM9 Kang ROM Themed. Before I was using the CM7 barebones. The ICS CM9 Kang ROM is fantastic. It is extremly fast and responsive. The Hardware UI acceleration is not working yet for HD and some times the system frizes. But I can only recommend the use!!

To me CM7 is the best ROM since everything works. The build in THIS post seems to be slightly better than the other CM7 builds that I've tried.
I've been using jackpot Clavins CM9 on my KF since mid January and love it. While the hardware acceleration doesnt work, everything else runs great. Very fast and newest builds have eliminated SOD issues.
Is there a specific ROM that is Clavin's CM9, or are you building yourself from his github. I see a lot of guys taking his source and making their own ROMs, but nothing specific from Clavin.
Any other opinions on this? I am looking for a ICS Rom which one works the best and is the most stable?
I'm using MIUI from the miui.us, and it's pretty awesome. Still needs some work but sounds like they all do - most issues just seem to be display formatting needing a little tweaking.
You kinda gotta be an MIUI person though, it's a little Apple-esque, not for everyone, though I find tablet usage may be a little less polarizing...

I really like it, and the most recent issues fix the Sleep Of Death issues they were having. I would definitely suggest it if your interested in ICS. Get it, flash it, see how it feels and if there's anything that you do that the lack of HW Accel effects. If not then your good.
It comes with NovaLauncher, and since I have a copy of ADW EX, I tried putting that over top of Nova, but I found it to be more sluggish. I would suggest staying pretty much bare bones on what the rom gives you, maybe adjust the awake clocks a little (down clock to 1.0GHz for stock, or under clock it to press the battery out a little further).
MoDaCo would be my suggestion otherwise. It's just Gingerbread, so it's the same old Android stuff. I've never been a huge fan of CM7, but that's just me

I agree that's (IMO) the best ICS ROM at the moment. However, Sleep of Death is still an issue. I'm not sure whether I'm terribly unlucky or what, but I get it every single time I attempt to shut down the KF, no exceptions, ever since 3-15 came out. Never had a SOD on 3-13.
Either way, I second that ROM as awesome among ICS ROMs.

I am also using Energy's KANG. I have not yet encountered the SOD. I used CM7 for a while, but wanted to try out ICS, and am glad I did.
Very happy with it, but am closely watching hashcode's kernel development thread.

Though limited by stock settings options, wallpaper options, Gr7 by modaco is the smoothest running imho, just throw adw/golauncher so your not stuck on the stock launcher.

You will still have access to all your books through the kindle reader app from the Android market place. Instant videos will not work

I use Energy ICS Kang rom v. 4.29.2012 ant it rocks. You should try it.
For me, it only has few small issues: comes from sleep only on the second press of the button, does not always show that battery is charging while it charges.

You can still access instant videos through your browser, I use Dolphin Browser HD. I made a bookmark and put it on my desktop.

I have the Energy ICS rom installed right now and don't like it at all, its just not that stable, on the other hand I don't like the carousel concept. I would like to install something close to stock that isn't going to run my battery dead real fast and the best compatibility with the Kindle Fire's hardware. There are just so many different ones out there, it doesn't have to be ICS, Honeycomb is fine. I was just hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction. Thanks

If you're like me and lack of Hardware Acceleration is not an issue, Jackpot/Hashcode/Nind/JDom's version of ICS is great. I use it as my daily now with Nova Launcher and have no issues. You might need to download the gapps fixer(posted in the thread as well) to fix calendar sync

Tri4x, out of curiosity were you using the 3/15 version of Energy or the 3/19? I flashed 3/15 on my kindle, and I loved the interface, but once it started getting sleep of death I thought "well I guess I'm going back to stock".
When I saw the 3/19 update in action I was actually really impressed at the improvement. Lack of HW Accel does suck though.
b63 Already suggested MoDaCo if you would prefer a stock rom, I've considered flashing back just to get HW Accel back. It's a really good rom, feels very smooth.

No HWA means no Netflix, no YouTube HD, no 720p video.
IMHO better for now to use CM7.

If you want to be close to stock, install root and some launcher.
May be Go Launcher HD. You still be on stock but you will have limitation with Android Market and language of user interface, 3th party keyboard and tts, and thousands of other things.

I've been using Whistlestop's CM7 ROM (standing on the shoulders of giants) for a few months now and I have had no issues. Everything works, no SOD, battery life has been great, no wifi problems, etc.

I've been using Energy ROM for about a week and not a single time have I thought about going back to stock, not even due to lack of HWA (yes, I miss netflix from time to time, but since I don't really watch that much TV/Movies on the go I guess is just a particular case where I am not that much affected) plus since changing to ICS I find myself using more my KF as a real tablet and not just a glorified e-reader.
Using 3/19 release of Energy and not seeing a lot of issues others are reporting (SOD only a couple of times)

After reading around and searching for custom roms for the KF, I still do not completely get to the point. This is what I understand
- Stock ROM mods only play around with some installed apps, google market, root
- CM7 is Gingerbread and supports HWA
- Energy CM9 is based on ICS and lacks HWA support (currently on my KF)
What I don't understand is, why CM9 cannot use the kernel from CM7 or Stock.
Does ICS rely on certain kernel features? Or what is the reason?

The second I know. But I could not find out why it is so important to use a newer kernel.
The first link sheds some light. I'll dig deeper which parts of the Android framework are responsible for the userland <-> kernel connection and how they are "version" (GB / ICS) relevant.

Has code's stock ROM has the Nexus 7 lay out. Jandy Cane has ICS style tablet optimizations, which I prefer

Hashcode's Jellybean ROM has the Nexus 7 layout. I have not seen at others with the Nexus 7 layout. By will admit that this ROM is one of the best I have ever used. You should really try it.

I'm a complete newbie - only rooted and flashed my Fire for the first time this week. I'm currently running Hashcode's most recent Jelly Bean ROM, and thus far it's been great. Stock Google JB layout, fantastic functionality.
However... I'm debating trying out twa_priv's newer ROM, which isn't stock Google but a modified CM10. That might, ultimately, be the best option, but I'm not sure.
Anybody able to compare these two builds and let us know what differs between them or why we might prefer one over the other?
I prefer Jandycane over Hashcodes just because it has the tablet option.

Cm9 roms are a little bit better and the cm7 roms definitely have better batterry life.
Cm10/Jelly Bean roms will all have pretty much the same battery life.
I started of with with jandycane and liked the layout, but switched to CM10 SGT7 because of incompatibles with apps (chrome, Swype, Ing direct, groupon, living social)
