Hello everyone,
I tried search the answer but only found something in a different phone section and it was not clear.
My question...I have already flashed with the Ice rom and it works fine...when I decide to change roms and flash a NEW one...what are the steps I must do for it to work correctly?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Brian K
If you're staying with the same rom (i.e. upgrading to a newer version of the same rom) - back up, wipe cache/dalvik cache, then flash
If you're changing rom but staying with Sense-based roms - do the same and see if you have any issues. If you do run into issues - wipe data/cache/dalvik cache, reboot.
If you're going from AOSP to Sense or Sense to AOSP - back up, wipe data/cache/dalvik cache, flash.
Its just do the same thing you did the first time. Make sure to do a full wipe and flash

Might be a lil off topic but I think it might be related.....you said 'do the same thing you did the first time'....so i'm guessing first time means the first time i flash a custom rom?? And if so, does that mean for the first time i flash a custom rom should i do a full wipe???
Thanks!

Yes you are correct. The post above mine is way more detailed. You should also do a nandroid backup of the rom you're on now in case you wanna go back.

The best way to move between ROMs is to make a nandroid + Titanium backup. Fully wipe. Flash your new ROM. Carefully re-import settings from Titanium if all seems to be working well. In the event of a failure, roll back to your nandroid copy.
Im really sorry but I still dont understand...I mean I kinda do but dont want to mess up and because of that, I'm trying to have a clear pic in my head.
Example...when you flash for the first time you have to:
flash recovery
wipe data/cach/etc
drop the rom onto the sd card
select the rom from sd card
reboot phone
Do you have to do ALL the same steps again, if you want to try a NEW rom...or no?
If no...what steps do you do differently?
Also...as for the Nandroid backup...do you do this everytime also, or just once?
Again, Im really sorry to be such a newb...but I am trying...I have just about every guide...its just that most guide are not for newbs and alot of times they are outdate. Dont get me wrong I appreciate the guides...I TRULY Do, I just dont want to mess this phone up.
Thanks in advance for any help

Repeat everything as you listed it except for flashing a new recovery (unless moving to/from a Froyo/Gingerbread; as recovery differs between Froyo and GB). I usually only make nandroid backups once I have found a ROM that I like and have it working well. It's a system restore! Then if I want to tinker with the "shiny new ROM" that just came out I can load it up and play with it. If it doesn't work well or at all, just roll back to your faithful fully working nandroid copy you made.

Actually switching between Froyo and GB has been made even easier by the new ClockWorkMod Recovery... TrueBlue's method works amazingly... Find it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944681... Flash it like you would a ROM via CWM... His zip also INCLUDES the STOCK RECOVERY so if you ever want to recalibrate the battery you can do so by going into Rom Manager and selecting 2.5.1.4 as your recovery, when done just switch back by selecting 3.0.0.5 and that will load up 3.0.0.6..
To answer OP's Question...
Step 1) NANDroid backup (Backup and Restore > Backup > press trackball)
Step 2) wipe data/cache/dalvik (I always do each of them twice for safe measures); Like someone here already said, if upgrading to a new version of THE SAME ROM BUT ITS BEEN UPDATED, just wipe CACHE AND DALVIK. Otherwise, wipe all 3.
Step 3) Install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard > select the ROM you want to install.
P.S. FYI I WOULD DO THIS FIRST!!!!! For flashing TrueBlue's 3.0.0.6 to be able to flash both froyo and gingerbread roms without changing the recovery each time (which is a pain in the ass btw) FOLLOW STEP 3 EXACTLY. The only difference is you will choose GlacierRecovery_to_RomManager.zip instead of whatever Rom you want. Reboot, go into RomManager, scroll to the bottom and select All ClockWorkMod Recoveries, choose 3.0.0.5 and it should say successfully flashed. Reboot into recovery and make sure at the bottom it says CWM 3.0.0.6. If it does, congrats, if not, reboot and reflash it, and continue to do this until you see CWM 3.0.0.6 at the bottom of the recovery screen.
PM me if you can't get it to work and want some more help with anything!
Hello,
I want to say it again, that the people in the Android forums are so much more helpful then back when I had a iphone and needed help. The people over in the iphone forums would sometomes help, but most of all, they would be rude.
Android forum techs are the BEST!
As for the Nandroid backup...this part also is a bit confusing, cause a few guides/videos show them doing the nandroid after they do the 3 wipes. However, I thought it made sense to do it first like you said.
Last night at around 4am I flashed CM7 with no problem and it is truly amazing. I am started to make sense just a little bit of all this but right now...I still cant wrap my head around the whole flashing recovery process.
Please understand I.m not just asking for answers, I am also reading as much as possible...I am making an effort.
Thanks so much everyone,
Brian K
No problem. If you have any questions I'd be glad to answer them for you or direct you in the direction for your answer. Just pm me like I said.
Just continue to read read read.. That's why I did and this is the first phone I've rooted or done anything with and I've become knowledgeable with some of the easier concepts and I'm trying to learn more complicated concepts as I go along.. Everyone had to start somewhere, and most of us here on xda realize this which is why we are so happy to help as long as these questions aren't asked and answered 4000 times.
P.S. Where ever you read/watched to wipe before NANDroiding I would advise to not go back to that because that is COMPLETELY the wrong thing to do!!

dont worry dnguyen1988...u were nice enough to help out and I promise to take you up on the offer for help
Amac1222...just to be clear...your saying to do a Nandroid backup before wiping ANYTHING...yes?
Thanks again for everything,
Brian
Yes, even when updating your rom, you can always move the nandroid off your sd to an external hd. Or you can delete them as you move up updates, (i.e. Build 41 to 42 to 43 delete 41 once you know 42 is good to backup to if needed). When I flash kernels I tend to not nandroid each time although I should. As a super noob I would and I used to until you are comfortable.
The basic thing is you always want something to fall back on in case you get stick in a boot loop or stuck on the mytouch screen.

Does anyone happen to have a nandroid backup for ThinkPadTablet_A310_02_0037_0075_US?

cool ker2gsr! Happy to help. I was thinking about building another nandroid of 0075 without Lenovo bloatware. I'm guessing both types of backups might be useful in the long run.
Dwilli40 - could you edit the thread title to reflect your request for 0075? It may help others to find a solution if they are in similar straights.

pwstein,
Thank you so much for this Nandroid backup!
This is exactly what I need to get my TPT back to being able to run encryption.
My current ROM has been updated to 0089_US.
Are there any issues I should be aware of in using this Nandroid backup to roll back to 0075?
Please advise me accordingly.
Thanks!
Konker
Konker,
No issues to speak of. It is a factory reset, booted through startup without wifi, no account info provided, Lenovo standard bloatware, and no customization. SuperUser is already installed and active. The backup folder was renamed and then added to a zip file.
My tablet has a Gobi3000 wwan card installed, otherwise a standard 1838 with 32gb storage.
I hope it helps anyone who didn't get a backup made before upgrading.
Unzip file to sd-card /clockworkmod/backup/
Put sd-card in tablet
Shut down, boot to CWR, (make your own backup), restore to 0075
Enjoy
I keep getting a MD5 checksum error. I have tried to re-downloading several times but still getting the error. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Try from the uploads I put on everyrandom.com today. The previously linked one was uploaded (550MB) on 3G cell service, likely screwing it up somehow.
edit: everyrandom.com/files wasn't serving the files correctly. They have been removed.

I was also so I installed the second CWM version about half way through that thread, and the restore went smooth.
Whoa, I just realized I never installed the improved CWR port. Mine is the original CWR that was offered up on the first day of Root. I should remember that because I ALWAYS pull my SD-Card out before performing factory resets. I heard the CWR update fixed that...
I'll note that in my Nandroid post. Thanks for the heads up.
I figured out what was going on. I guess when I extracted the files, it put the files in a sub folder with the name as the original folder.
I tried to download from the other post also, but it was like the files had been removed from the site.

I updated the CWM on my TPT with this version & I discovered that the recovery console is not as stable.
No long after I reboot into CWM recovery, perhaps about 10 secs, my TPT rebooted itself.
Has anyone observed this behavior?
I'm going to try download again & see how it goes.

I believe I've had this problem in the past with other android devices but I don't recall how I solved it.
Basically I unlocked, rooted, and flashed CWN using the nexus tool kit (I am very capable of using adb just felt like simplifying). I then made a nandroid backup using the CWM that the tool kit flashed. Later, i updated to CWM touch with Rom manager. I don't think the new CWM caused this but for some reason i am unable to delete that first nandroid i made. I've made other backups since and have had no problem deleting them, it's just this first one that i made that isn't deleting for some reason. Any ideas? It's pretty much just dead weight on my storage at this point.

im having the same issue and am working on it right now, will keep ya posted.
edit: i just flashed all the way back to stock and rerooted, started fresh basically. i wonder, can you just partition the "sdcard", effectively erasing the entire clockworkmod folder?
I had that problem and tried root explorer, astro, rom manager to delete the folders and nothing was working until I actually booted CWM and deleted the backup through CWM, it deleted just fine.

that was my first thought but i wasnt able to locate the option to do so in the version of CWM i was using- honestly i dont recall which it was. now that im on a fresh system though, i think ill switch to TWRP. i use it on my one X and like it just fine.
So here's the thing. I made 2 Nandroids of my stock image before flashing a ParanoidAndroid 3.1 ROM today. However, I needed to quickly revert back to my stock ROM to check a few things. So, I reboot into CWM, wipe data, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache. I go to backup and restore, press restore and it isn't finding my Nandroid backups I made. It just says "Couldn't open directory. No files found". Even worse... if I try to just flash the ParanoidAndroid ROM, I can't, because it isn't showing up when I press "install zip from sdcard".
I've tried to go into mounts and storage to mount the sdcard but it doesn't do anything. I press mount sdcard and nothing happens. I'm trying to mount the sdcard to see if the Paranoid ROM is still there (which it should be, as I haven't moved anything). I have a sneaky suspicion it's something to do with the 0/ folder.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
you wiped /data

NEVER wipe data.....at most do a FACTORY RESET in your custom recovery. if you really went in and wiped DATA, then its all gone.

I didn't mean I wiped the data folder. I meant I pressed "wipe data/factory reset" in CWM seeing as this is what needs to be done when flashing a new ROM.
then what version of CWM are you on? make sure its the latest that understands the multi-user file structure

I'm currently on CWM v6.0.0.6. How do I go about installing the latest? I just downloaded the latest .img file but I'm not quite sure how to install it (this is the first device I've rooted and flashed).
edit: Ok, so here's the thing. For some reason, my nandroid backups of stock are located in sdcard/0/clockworkmod/backup/, but I see that the restore function of CWM reads the backups from sdcard/clockworkmod/. Of course, "mount sdcard" isn't working so I can't bring those backups into the right folder.

You could also connect to your pc, and move the backup from there.
And you can use a toolkit to flash the image.

YOU CANNOT MOUNT SDCARD on a nexus device....there is no SDCARD
ADB will allow you to get a command prompt in the device and you can move files around there....
OR
like i said, UPDATE YOUR CWM USING FASTBOOT.....it will allow your recovery to see your backups and roms.....this isnt complicated, just follow the basic instructions.

I would suggest you to change the title of your OP for something that more explicit as " Cannot restore my backups with CWM" or "some problems with my recovery"
If you can accessed to your bootloader, you can try to flash a recent version of both recoveries..

But yet developers build the toolkits and post then in the development threads. And developers make flashable zips and use the aroma installer. TWRP put a graphical interface on recovery which was pretty easy to use already.
Do you chastise them with the same vigour as you do 'users'?
However, many people manage to make your same case without being so dismissive.

Why are you so angry/frustrated? Maybe take a break from Q&A if it bothers you so much. Don't put words in my mouth, and please don't talk down to me since you know nothing about me. I said nothing about 'approving of toolkits so much'. I simply pointed out that they are available and they are created by devs. I'm not some rookie here. I am on XDA multiple times a day. I've been here since before the rootzwiki split, so please don't feel the need to explain to me what is 'wrong' with XDA or with its members.
You told the OP to move on if they couldn't meet your pedantic expectations of how best to solve their problem. You have the same option to move on to someplace that better suits your needs/expectations.
I counter suggest that you ponder this. There is a whole organization of site admins and forum moderators with a legitimate mandate to do what you have taken on as your burden.
You have had your say, and I have had mine. I suggest that if further exchange is necessary it go to PM. I hope that this has not become personal for you. It hasn't for me.
