Identifying 8gb versus 16gb version? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So earlier this week I received my pre-order Nexus 7 from Google Play, but shortly thereafter realized that the device only had 5.9gb of available storage -- a bad sign, since I had ordered the 16gb version.
I've been in Google customer service limbo for the last week; they're supposedly going to contact me to arrange for a replacement, but I'll believe that when it happens. Anyway, in the interim I've been wondering -- could this actually be a 16gb unit that was mis-partitioned? Every label in the shipment appears to say it's a 16gb unit -- I never would have known otherwise if I hadn't stopped to check the free storage before spending my Play credit.
So is there any way to determine what the actual storage capacity of the unit is? Do the device numbers take particular formats for the 2 versions? Is there some way through ADB to get the total storage size (regardless of whether they partitioned it as an 8gb)?

The box has 8GB or 16GB on it in the barcode area. That is the only thing I know as I ordered both and that was the only way to tell them apart.

Yes, that's my problem. My order on Google Play, the slip in my packing materials, the barcode on the box -- all say 16GB. But when I fired up the device and went to the storage settings, it said I only had 5.92 gigs of storage available.
So either there was a massive logistical screw up, it really is an 8gb unit and the box got mislabeled (it seems to have the right device number, though), or the docs are all correct -- it really is a 16gb and the device was misconfigured at the factory. If it's the second situation I could presumably fix it myself using the binaries Google made available, and avoid the return process entirely. But I'd rather not go down that route if it's not really a 16gb model because I'd like to avoid any further headaches with the return process.

You can also compare the serial number on your device with the one on the box and see if they match.

Yup. Checked that. The serial number reported in Settings matches the CSSN on the barcodes on the box. Everything appears to be consistent between the packaging and the device, except for the amount of storage.

Engineering Sample???

I just picked up a Venue Pro and I noticed in the back of the battery there was an imprint on it stating it was an engineering sample, but the numbered code (starts with CN-) on it was different than on the device itself. Are they supposed to match? If it is an engineering sample device I could format a new microsd card, correct?
If it helps, hardware revision number: 112.576.2.0, radio hardware version: 8250
Where/when did you get the phone? There were some engineering batteries in the phones at Microsoft Stores for the WP7 launch, but I haven't heard of any since then.
What's the firmware revision?
just got it a week ago, used though. no idea when/where they got it.
firmware revision: 2250.1500.7004.029
its an 8gb, mostly curious b/c i wanna throw a 32gb card in it
That has to be a unit from the original launch at the Microsoft stores. I would make sure you do not have an WiFi issues since many of those units did have bugs. I had to return the one that I got on launch because of a fee issues. As far as I know the MS store units were the only ones thatbhad engineering sample batteries.

What wifi issues am I looking for, I rarely use wifi. Does the engineering sample battery have anything to do with the phone though? I thought I read somewhere engineering samples are best for formatting the microsd cards, was wondering if that was going to reduce the risk of bricking it.
Can't test to much, still waiting on my simcard to be activated. They lag on dealer line activations.

You should be OK. At the time of the launch in the MS stores, the battery for the phones had the "engineering sample" batteries. Dell and Microsoft informed people at the time that the batteries should function as regular production ones. Apparently the phones had these batteries put in by mistake. As for the phones themselves, they were not pre production phones, but production ones.
As for what gshocker said, there were a lot of Wi-Fi hanging issues that are separate from the battery issue. You might want to make sure it is not constantly hanging and freezing.

That is most likely a device sold at a Microsoft Store for the WP7 launch. It probably cannot connect to secure (WPA, WEP) WiFi networks among other things.
Eventually Microsoft Store got updated devices with the same firmware as those sold through Dell, which is 2250.1500.7004.105. You may be able to get it exchanged at a MS store or through Dell for a newer device with updated firmware.

Lol craigslist where I get all my phones. Risk/reward lol.
Still haven't been able to test the wifi freeze issue. I can connect to my secure home network just fine though. Tmobile is dragging on activating my lines.
Thanks for clearing up the engineering sample thing for me. Now to get a 32gb card.

Weird wallet / Google MasterCard........

When I first got my Nex7 I set it up including Google wallet. It setup my prepaid card and it was the same as on my Gnex and had the same balance. Last night I unlocked the boot loader on my Nex7 and rooted, left the stock Rom. Today I setup my wallet account again and its a new card number with a $10 balance.
I called money network and they told me there is no way I had my same card from my gnex on my Nex7 and that every device will had a different card number but it will be linked to the same email address. This just sounds weird to me.... so now I need to have 2 different wallet accounts and have to have two different balances? Is there a way to backup the app data from titanium backup from my gnex to my Nex7? I'd really like to have the same balance on both devices.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
My (perhaps limited) understanding is that you have one Wallet account with one balance but each device has its own card. No different to you and the missus having credit cards on the same account. The point being that each 'thing' you pay with must be able to be identified uniquely.
There is no need to backup your Google Prepaid card. It is tied to the device and each device has its own balance. You have one transaction history though.
If you were going to add money, beyond the $10 Google gave you, then I could see how it might be nice to have just one card. Maybe some day that can happen. Maybe around the same time they let you use whatever card you want.
Think of it like each device being a different debit card... pay with whichever card you like...

I'd be fine with that , but unfortunately it doesn't seem to work that way. There is two different balances. I did check my transaction history and it does show all my transactions from my phone. Weird. I really hope at some point google decide to come by in the balances for all devices.

I'm not sure what happens but I know I have seen a few threads on the gnex forums about "secure element" problems with the wallet app and the only fix is to replace the phone. This happened to a lot of people after flashing a Rom.
I'm just going to leave mine be and hope that one day they merge the balances.

FreedomPop to offer LTE clip for WIFI tablets in the US

Forbes is reporting that FreedomPop will be offering an LTE clip for WIFI tablets later this year. They will give 500 MB for free each month. http://www.forbes.com/sites/tomiogeron/2013/02/04/freedompop-plans-lte-clip-to-give-free-internet-to-ipad-android-tablets/?

An interesting concept if true.
Every time I see one of these mini devices I'm reminded of SD/IO.
The interface standard for SD Slots that failed to take hold in the PDA era and thus is absent today.
Back then it was used for camera plugins and modems, etc, just like having a PCI slot except on a mobile device.
This Freedom Clip could easily be made to fit inside a SD Slot if it supported SDIO.
Then you could save WiFi power on the battery.

"Easily"? An LTE radio and antenna won't fit in the space available in the SDIO spec. Just 'cause it works for WiFi doesn't mean it'll scale.

I ordered a Bolt back on Jan 31st, and went with the free 500MB plan. Did the basic shipping too. I got a notice 6 days ago it had "shipped" and a FedEx number, but FedEx states they have no idea what that number is, and have never take possession of the device. FreedomPop wont reply to my email either, and does not list a phone support contact on the website. Seems the only place you get support is "facebook" - which I really don't want to create an account on just for support....
But I have noticed these "gotchas":
$3 extra/month - if you want non throttled speed (12GBit vs 6GBit)
$1 extra/month - for warranty on the devices
$1 extra/month - if you don't use at least 5MB per month, they pass on the activity fee from Sprint
The intro 2GB plan that gets you a stick for $10 seems to be "stuck on" and you can't shut it off on the website without sending support an email.
Extra MB can be gained by completing surveys and installing spyware/adware on your browser.
They will take the device back if it is in new condition, has the original shipping container and boxes, you have the original shipping receipt, you have an RMA and you pay for return shipping. You dont get any shipping costs back. Looks like it also has to be returned within 12 months.
Your account starts when you click "activate" on the website for your order. So, yes, I now have 20 days left to spend my monthly allocation and I don't have the device yet...
They are back-ordered on a lot of the products but the website states nothing about this. In fact, a lot of the extra information I posted is from trolling the Facebook posts...
One of the posters on Facebook did a net trace (not sure how) and kept stats on his data usage, and found the FreedomPop website listed the same period of usage at 30% higher.
IN SPITE of all this, I'm still going to give them a try. I spent a total of $70 for the deposit and shipping. And I will be trying to get it to work with a custom build on the Samsung GTab 2, or just use it with my laptop.
If you go with this provider, just do some homework. It looks awfully nice to get 500MB free, but it will take some work on your part to keep it truly free, as the odds seem stacked against you.
I'll be happy to post actual usage info - assuming I get one - if anyone is interested.
EDIT - You can buy the devices on Amazon, this may be a lot safer since you have Amazon supporting purchases. Remember, you must buy one of their devices to you their service, you can't bring your own. There are a couple posts on facebook stating they cant get their own device to work with MAC spoofing either. not sure why. (internal certs?)
It's here...
It arrived today. (Still no response from support, perhaps it doesn't matter as much now.)
Go figure, they shipped it via USPS. I tried the "fedex" tracking number on UPS's website but I didn't think to try USPS... would have been nice to know that info... or would have been nice if their website didn't send you to FedEx incorrectly. Oh well.
Nice small device. It's a Ubee Stick, Model PXU1964. It has a rubber cover over two small external antenna plugs. (I'd post images but the attachment link says xda is overloaded...)
On a rooted Samsung GTab2 7" it won't work (stock 4.1.1 rom) - it powers up for a bit but then I see the "high power device" error in android and it shuts down. But since that's really not a topic for this forum, I'll post more info over in the GTab forum probably. I never see the Flash drive part of the device or an eth0 in ifconfig or ip addr... No biggie. I will probably use it in the car attached to my NetgearWNR3500L, since that's quite a bit more flexible than FreedomPop's mobile hotspot offering. (and I have an extra router)

Noticed your post - late I know but thought I would respond. Many Tablets don't have the power needed to supply the USB Sticks as they draw the full 500 mw designated by the USB specification. I have the Acer A500 and it is capable and works well. You can get around that issue by using a powered USB Hub it does get a little convoluted. If you over come the power issue with the powered hub see my post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1921928 the last entry in the thread and it should work for your tablet as well.

[Q] Received 8GB Nexus, box says 16GB??

Well, this is very odd. I ordered a Nexus 4 16GB (via FromUs2Eu.nl; phone not available in the Netherlands). Today I received my phone, however, there is only 8GB storage space! On the box it clearly says that it should be the 16Gb version. The IMEI number on the box is the same as the phone, but the serial numbers differ. Has anyone heard of this before???
Moreover, this company didn't give me the official play store receipt, so at this moment, I feel like I'm pretty screwed. Hope fromus2eu will sort this out quickly, but I have to wait and see. Any other people that have heard of this company and have had a same experience?
I have not heard about the company, but there have been many users experience similar problems. Flashing/returning to stock somehoe bugged and the phone only recognize 8GB.
Wipe everything and restock usually solve the problem.

Unless you already have a nanosim or a nanosim adapter, chances are you will need one with this phone. One comes with every order regardless. You don't get charged more for it either (I know I didn't when I ordered my G3). If you don't need it, just leave it in the box and don't use it.

You can cut an original SIM down to nanosim size. I did it when I had the Xperia Z3 and it worked fine. FYI, I had to sand it down pretty well on the sides so it would fit the nanosim tray. Just be careful not to cut the chip!
Does it say the monthly plan is not an option because it's not been released? Says it on the nexus 5 too.

Monthly will be 28/30 dollars a month with your bill for 24 months. Zero down payment (aside from tax, also depending on credit rating).
Honestly I have no problem with the Midnight Blue model since it was what I was gunning for. That said I am still contemplating if I should attempt to get the 64GB option from the website (which might sell out as fast as Google Play did) or pull a "Black Friday" and camp in front of my local T-Mobile over night to be the first in line for the release despite only being able to get the 32GB model.
I never had too many issues with storage with my Nexus 4 16GB, never stored music on it aside from ones I would make into ringtones and when it came to ROM/Titanium backups I would eventually offload them to my computer/server if I had too many on my device. Would a 32GB model (which will likely be about 24GB's) be more than enough for someone like me?
This must be an old rendering of the Nexus 6? The metal bezel appears silver in color on the "Midnight blue" model as opposed to being blue anodized.
Id much prefer this set up.
