How to replace flex cable connecting motherboard to mic - Vibrant General

How do I get the back part where the screen is apart to replace this cable? Mine broke and the capacitive buttons on the bottom quit working. Ordered new xsbke and using on screen keys until it gets here.

I didn't quite understand the question. Are you asking how to disassemble the phone itself or how to replace a specific part?
To take the phone apart, here is a video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lt9XNnjAcBc
(the i9000 has the same hardware so the disassebly process is the same).

Trying to replace the flex cable that runs from the bottom capacitive buttons mic and vibrator to the motherboard. I am having issues in seeing how to take the back piece off where I can replace the cable.

Check out www.mobiletechvideos.com, he has a few tutorial videos on the site specifically for the vibrant. Check their youtube page as well, maybe one of the vids will help you out....

Sorry to say, but I think the only way to do it is to take the screen assembly off. Which will require the use of a heat-gun because the screen is glued.

this part? - http://www.repairsuniverse.com/samsung-vibrant-t959-motherboard-flex-cable-replacement.html
i was able to remove it using this guide - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLUl9tlHSik
Skip to 2:40. It's not as easy as he shows. Its glued on very solid. Doesn't require a heat gun, but does require steady pulling for about 1 min. If you need help pm or reply and I can try to explain it better for you.
proof its possible - https://www.dropbox.com/s/tgekucwqz3eyf3i/2012-07-21 16.05.01.jpg from a disassembly i did last week

I got the cable in the mail and I did check the video previously but I still don't see where to lift that will not break something in the process. Where did you try to lift it up at? Seems as well the chrome surround gets in the way does that need to be removed too? Do all the parts at the botton need to be removed as well?

Undo both clips for that flex cable. Towards the bottom of your green oval on the right you have to remove that piece because part of the tray goes under it.
I put a screw driver under the bottom right screw hole you see in the picture and was able to pry the tray up. It is glued on very tight so it will be tough to get it loose but it's possible. if you pm me I'll be happy to walk you through it in a chat.

Well I tried to get it from the corner and it just lifted it from the glass the phone is ruined. Oh well if anyone wants a flex cable let me know.

If anyone else has to replace this please use a heat gun as I was under the impression that the back part and the screen were not attached in the recess, but the LCD screen is glued to this back piece. I am really sad I went from fixing a GPS and in the process breaking this cable doing something wrong then ruining the entire phone after...sigh. It is my own fault and I blame no one else but please take extra caution.I was really tempted to just tape this on the back where the battery is located and say the hell with it since it was my " fun phone" but now that is a pipe dream.

Does anyone need Vibrant parts? You pay shipping anything is yours. Motherboard, Case I have a few batteries and one Anker Extended. I give up the phone is dead and gone and I am just going to throw these parts away if no one wants them.

I was looking to do this same repair on my Vibrant as my vibrating motor no longer works and the mic has gone bad (people say it sounds fuzzy/robotic and distant and can barely understand me even with 5 bars of signal). This scares me off though. I don't want to ruin the phone.

So how do you do this repair without ruining it? How does it connect to the motherboard and the screen?

Just realized that the part I need replaced is actually the keypad flex cable with the vibrating motor and mic attached, which is at the bottom. It requires taking it all the way down to the screen. Ugh.

after that, i cant get the screen out ot the front housing. is there something im missing? when i use a pry tool to try to remove it like the rest of the parts, it creaks like its going to break. ive broken it down to study it before the lights get here just to have a grasp on what im doing. any one have any pointers? some one told me it may be glued in and i would need a hair dryer or something similar to remove it. any help you guys could share would be greazt! thanks!

Ballsy man, a lot of phones have the screens glued. It's a stronger construction method and allows for the phone to be thinner.

Its a double sided sticker holding the lcd to the front housing. I've replaced mine and had to reuse it. It went ok but I stretched it and the glue weakened.
Also the soft keys are glued to the lcd so remember to unplug that ribbon.

[Q] Replace shattered screen

Yes exactly as it says. My screen is shattered, but all touch capabilities work. Is this the just the top glass thats broken? I want to make sure I get the proper replacement parts. If the LCD is cracked how would I know? Also would you pros recommend a only having slight tech experience to do this? Lesson for the day? Dont have a fight with your significant other if you have a hot temper while on your phone.

if the screen works, the lcd is not broken. you can exchange only the glass ( its called digitizer, look at ebay).
But carefull, i didnt replaced an atrix screen, only other phones like galaxy s, and i can say: you will need a LOT of patience to disasemble the lcd from the digitizer without breaking it.

This is somthing to be carefull. Probably the digitizer will shatter when you separate it from the lcd. so try to do this, facing down the phone.
I did it on my phone, very easy just make sure you pull everything off in the description below and it will work like a charm. One piece of help I can offer is to make sure you put the double sided tape far enough up without getting it on the LCD on the bottom on the digitizer, I didn't and now I get some light from the backlights that shows at a extreme angle. I held the phone upside down when pulling of the digitizer and i used a can of air to clean it all out. Good luck.
http://www.repairsuniverse.com/motorola-atrix-4g-take-apart-repair-guide-video.html
One of the main advantages of the Atrix is that the LCD and the Digitizer are not glued together, which makes it pretty easy to replace them!
The only concern would be not to let any dust specks in between the LCD and digitizer.
BTW, check cnn dot cn for prices on oem parts!
Good luck!
Cheers!

Was able to get the phone taken apart without damaging the lcd or any other parts. However, upon inspection of the replacement, I noticed the idiots sent me a digitizer with a cable torn nearly in half. I'm so mad I could spit. And of course no phone support. So I'm stuck with my slow as a snail backflop until I get back for oregon in a week.

question about lcd
when removing the cracked glass/digitizer, got fingerprints on lcd. This is all right, right? Like I can clean it with a microfiber cloth or something?
Make sure that you properly line up the proximity sensor and the hole in the digitizer for the prox sensor. I didn't put any adhesive on the top of my digitizer when I reattached it and now I have to press the top of my screen down whenever I want to view my screen during phone calls because the proximity sensor is reading the digitizer as my face. >_<
Got the new digitizer installed. Everything except the spot where the n on the keyboard in portrait view works. I didn't use any adhesive as the screen came with adhesive on it. Should I have used some? It is lifted up above the case of the phone. Can anyone advise me as to maybe some warranty replacement now that its not shattered anymore? Like call AT&T and say that spot is dead now?

Fix for touchscreen (temporary solution)

Ok I had the screen problems now for 6-8months. Cant be without my phone as most users. I mod a lot and always need to battery pull. Which as caused the problem of the 1cm dead strip which affects game play and letters WESZ on the touch keyboard.
My solution is not ideal but it works. Am not technical minded at all.
1) you need a strip of thin metal.

This is what I used. A old hard speaker cover I think this was
2) I cut it into a strip of around 0.5mm wide 1cm long
3) remove battery and place right hand side of fingerprint scanner
4) replace battery (might be a tight fit)
5) replace back cover
6) bend the strip over
Works for me screen perfect now. I can pull battery. Replace the strip. Replace the battery. Boot and screen is prefect again.
Hope this help some of you guys.
Maybe someone can find a more ideal way?

I have the same problem but this doesn't work for me.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA
That works!!!!!!!!i just slightly pull the fingerprint sensor up! the dead area comes back to work!!!!!!!!amazing!!!!!
i think the problem lies in the digitizer bus connector!
I thought you were going to post something like take out your digitizer and put glue stick on it all lmao! just kidding.
So this works... let's see...
EDIT (WORKS!):
So odd... this works better than punch the phone, haha. Nah it just worked fine =), It's a workaround till my digitizer arrives, also I use the Fingerprint so this is a problem either ways lol... but
Thank you and God bless you.
EDIT 2 lol:
Did you ever try buying a new digitizer, or do you think it's some other problem? because I bought a digitizer already and it is on it's way to me.
Ill try , thanks !!!

i dont know about dangerous.. ive cleaned my screen every day with an alcohol pad since day one(and the back camera lens cover).
looks like grit or hair or fibre under the lens.
If IPA wont remove it from the lens cover i'd say for sure its under glass, which would suggest two things.
1. You have had the handset apart at some point and as such voided your warranty and this won't get RMA'ed, and will get sent back to you.
2. The handset has failed its IP rating (Ingress Protection Rating) and if none of the water markers or tabs that show the device has been opened not by the factory, your get this replaced.
Personally i'd not bother worrying, it will possibly shift after time, as long as it does not move to the centre.

well that's dependant on device usage, I work with fibre optics and see this all the time when cleaning fibres and laser emitters.
a week to 2 months, it a could also be a scratch / small chip on the lens cover that has dirt embedded in it, get some IPA / screen cleaner and go at it with a cotton bud.

Why do you need to look in ebay?
You can go to samsung service center and pay for the repair if its out of warranty.

Yeah Samsung overcharges heaps >.>
I can probably do any replacement myself its just that I would usually be too lazy to do it, the Volume buttons are getting pretty annoying though so im either gonna give this a go or get a guy I know into mobile repairs to do it for me.
Not too trusting of myself yet..
For those finding this thread as I did, this is a fairly EASY repair to make and should not require a replacement part.
Simply:
- Remove battery Case, battery, sim card, SD card
- unscrew all visible screws
- remove speaker assembly
- remove bezel
(watch this video until about 3 minutes for the above)
- unhook the two black rubber hooks (pretty small) from the inside of the phone
- push the volume button inwards, it should pop out
- use a couple pairs of needle nose pliers to bend the button back straight (it should require very little force).
- put everything back (don't forget to hook the little black piece back in and make sure nothing was disconnected).
voila.
Hope this helps
I had the same issue, although not SO obvious. I just dissembled the phone and then bend the button in the opposite direction. Right now its like a new button.
bringing this thread back from the dead. my volume button was bent, so I followed the instructions in this tread to disassemble my phone. turns out the metal volume button bar got pushed out of the plastic tab that holds it in place. I bought a $7 phone repair kit from Amazon. I used the triangle guitar-pick looking plastic tool to separate the frame from the phone (the step after removing the screws). I'm so glad I found this thread.
