Low Volume - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone else think that the max volume on the Nexus 7 is way too low?
I don't mind using ear buds to watch a movie, but I don't want to have to search for my ear buds and then put them in every time I want to watch a short YouTube video or other media.
Anyone know of a fix? Perhaps an app that can boost volume, even a little bit.

With the speaker in the back, yeah it's pretty quiet. When i'm listening to music in portrait mode, i flip it upside down (with the camera on the bottom). I find it's much louder, and better sounding.

After hooking up my gamescon headphones i much prefer them. The sound quality is amazing. Great for music and movies.

My volume is fairly loud for an external speaker on a tablet. I am surprised how loud mine is after reading posts saying its too low. My headphone volume is also loud while other people say theirs is low. Don't know what the difference is among all these units. But for your question. I can increase the perceived loudness by placing my tablet in a case with a solid back that has about 3mm spacing or gap between the tablet and the back (Used this method for another tablet I had). The back reflects the sound back towards you and makes the sound perceive louder. Cupping your hand over the speaker while holding it in landscape also works. Again, reflecting all the sound towards you instead of away from you. I find the volume apps don't really work for me and distorts the sounds.

I was cupping my hand behind the speaker and it still was too soft for me. But then I put my hand flat against the speaker and the volume increased significantly. I expected that would have muffled the sound further but not so. I then placed it flat up against a wall and the sound is great. I also tried laying it flat on my desk and got the same results. It seems that the sound bounces best when a hard surface is directly touching the back of the N7. I wonder how a case will affect it.

i use this

There is a free version you can try too. It might work the same as It helped to boost my Sensation 4g volume.
set boost to 10 (mid level) and you'll be amazed!

I saw that in the Play Store but thought that it wasn't compatible because of the developers comments
PLEASE DON'T RATE BADLY BECAUSE OF JELLY BEAN INCOMPATIBILITY! THIS IS GOOGLE'S DOING, NOT MINE, I'M TRYING MY BEST TO GET IT WORKING BUT HAVE HAD NO LUCK SO FAR. PLEASE TRY AND BE A BIT MORE PATIENT.

I am not sure why it says not compatible. It shows compatible for n7 on playstore. Either way, it's working beautifully.

Paid version Volume+ solved the low volume on the external speaker for me. I have loud and clear sound right now.

+1. Working great for me as well.

I love the N7. My only gripe is that the headphone volume sucks. Way too low. The speaker volume is also too quiet but that's not something I use too often, so I can live with that. The headphones however, if the unit wasn't so great in all other respects, this would be a showstopper.
I don't see anything in the description that says Volume+ works with the N7/Jelly Bean. Also, the latest user comment as of yesterday, says that is does NOT work with Jelly Bean.
I tried the free version but that didn't so anything noticeable so I'm holding off until the developer signs off on the N7.
In the meantime, I thought of trying bluetooth headphone. As they are powered, I'm hoping that I can get a volume boost that way. Anyone got some input on this idea?

Try using an app on the play store called Volume+.

Yah volume+ is a must have.

Volume+ is working on the Nexus 7. After downloading go into the settings of the app and start moving some or all of the bars to the right. You have to experiment to get it just the way you can want. At least it worked for me and some others on the site.

Volume+ works for me. The simple volume boost isn't so good but the volume control in the EQ section works fine.

Volume Increase

I always thought the max volume lever was to low on the dinc. Just got the OTA to 2.2 and still the same. Took a flight Sat. and brought some .avi movies to watch. The volume is so low, even at max, that I cannot hear a lot of it. Frustrating.
Myphone is rooted. Is there anyway to increase or boost the volume?
Thanks.................MM

Be Careful
Blown speakers is a fairly common thing at this point. Be very very very very careful if you want to push the speakers further than they are meant.
Use a headset, then you get the hear it much better and not disturb passengers around you on the flight.
In-ear plug type or over-the-ear full coverage cans are the best for flights. I fly a lot and use in-ears all the time. Keeps the noisy airplane and babies out, and keeps the overly talkative neighbor at bay as well.
Maybe get some quality in earbuds that block out more external sound. I find the Dinc to be loud enough. I have tinnitus from playing in bars with my stack turned up too high. You do not want louder, it absolutely sucks hearing a ringing in your ears 24/7 for the rest of your life.

I was using in the ear sound isolating monitors. They seal well and block a lot of ambient sound. I tried 3 different movies in .avi format. Sound was way too low and I could not make out a lot of dialogue. I use Rock player. Would be nice if I had a player with an equalizer or gain boost.

What headphones exactly are you using? If they are a high impedance or have a low sensivity they wont get loud. I have the Skullcandy Titans and they get plenty loud.
I'm using me electronics M9 http://www.meelec.com/MEElectronics_M9_Hi_Fi_Sound_Isolating_earphones_p/earphone-m9-mee.htm
Is 16 ohms on the high side?

no, 16 ohms is great, but 95db for the sensitivity is definitely not.
my headphones are 16ohm as well but have a 115db sensitivity. when listening to music i am usually about 3 or 4 notches from full volume, and that's about as much as i can take.

Skullcandy Titans. they sound pretty nice. i mentioned it a few posts up.

Whoa! That's LOUD!

SO far I'm pretty pleased with my Xoom, however, I went to use my headset on it today and it's obnoxiously loud - anyone find a solution for this?
FYI - I have it on the quietest setting (the next level down mutes it) and it's insanely loud, to the point I needed to pull out my Nexus earlier to listen to music. Sucks.
Don't put it on a flat surface, it magnifies the sound significantly
Yeah, aware of that, but as my original post states I'm experiencing this with the headphones so the placement of the device is obviously moot.
Thanks anyway
I've used my iPhones headphones and never had any issue
Does your headset have any kind of amplifier or volume control?
This may sound silly but try a reboot. My I had similar problem without headphones on the first day.
The volume slider was working and the speaker volume was changing but not enough. The unit would go from mute to loud to LOUD.
Reboot fixed it.

No. I obviously thought of this.
Moving forward can people only chime in if they actually have solutions that aren't completely f'n obvious? I'm waiting for the next posts to be:
1. Can you try holding the headphones further from your ears?
2. Can you put cotton between your headphones and earlobes to act as a buffer?

Wow, you're an asshole. Sometimes people forget these things.
You didn't specify in the OP if you had powered headphones or if you had rebooted it.
Go **** yourself dude.
Agree with the above post. Dude seriously your going to post for help and then bash the people that are actually trying to help your lame ass. Why don't you go outside and **** yourself before posting ever again.

Yeah... I snapped, sorry man, just getting frustrated with this, it feels embarrassing right now, I'm on a flight across country and (now have) my laptop plugged in for music and am using my Xoom for browsing and games... While the dude next to me is enjoying life watching crystal clear movies and browsing on his iPad.
Again, I know I snapped, sorry dude...
The main problem is that all of the solutions are pretty obvious sounding. I'll play nice
Only things I can think of is that the volume control is changing the notification volume instead of the media volume (you can control them with separate sliders now).
I assume cause you're on a flight you can't check the volume coming from the speakers, if you can, is it changing?
If all else fails you've got a bum headphone jack
What headphones are you using?
i wish we could switch places, my problem is exactly the opposite. I wish my headphones were louder. The speakers on this badboy are pretty loud but watching music videos and stuff with my headphones is kind of meh. I was riding the NYC subway earlier and was trying to drown everyone out but i could still hear the damn train and people talking over my music at the loudest setting.

I don't think that's it, I think it's a mix of the settings being way off on the Xoom and the headphones being pretty strong/good - I'll try another set of headphones once I'm local along with another Xoom next week when my other one arrives.

I live in NYC (East Village) and know exactly what you're talking about!
FYI - I'm using these headphones and would definitely recommend them, they do a great job with music and as a headset for my cell (Nexus).
Agreed. You suck man. Your Xoom is probably so ****ty for you cause how ****ty you are to people that try to help you.
EDIT: my bad I understand frustration. And I did miss that you said with headphines, I know what i said was obvious, but I didnt realize it was doing so with my speakers for a mimuye or two, I just sat there like an idiot like wow.
just try a few different headphones. I use my stock iPhones headphnes and the button that is suppose to volume up my iPhone actually pauses and plays the music on my Xoom which is sweet, the other buttons don't work and I haven't tried the mic
I have the same thing happen to me. The volume gets stuck at full blast even going to settings and turning it down the volume doesn't change. Its mute or full. Only way to stop it is to reboot. Trying to find a fix as i type this.
I have the same problem. My wife and I were just on a 4 hour plane ride so I loaded a bunch of dvd catalyst converted movies and TV episodes to the xoom to watch on the flight. Once I plug the 3.5mm splitter I have into the headphone jack the volume is strangely at full blast even though the volume control indicates that it is next to muted. The other thing is that the movie or episode always began from the gallery app with the sound coming from the speakers regardless of the splitter being plugged in to the jack, it took an unplugging and replugging of the splitter for the sound to be redirected through the jack again.
This sounds more like a software bug than anything. I think a reboot is your best option.
Sorry if it was already asked, but what application are you using for your music? If it's not the stock one, a reboot might not do anything. Try a different multimedia application and/or check its sound settings.
I use Poweramp on my Xoom and have had no issues. However for video I use Moboplayer and have this exact issue because the application has its own special settings for sound. Sometimes it's too loud others too quiet.
Hope some of this helps. Good luck.

Don't think so. You can always prop it up against a solid object which makes it seem a lot louder

Ty for the info and I went to check out the app in the market and the price seems cheap if it works but I really didnt wanna root my xoom unless i had to...can you confirm it works bc if it works good I may just root my Xoom.
I think it's loud enough tbh, any louder might blow out the speaker. You can always hook up external speakers or get the HD Docking station which comes with built in speakers (if I'm not mistaken)
Try equalizer its free and its a equalizer
sent from my Motorola XOOM
I cup my hands around them and force the sound to bounce back to me. Or since i have the zoogue case, I fold the cover completely back.
volume hack does work, but it also makes it Very LOUD...but its adjustable.like hitting the "loud" button on your car stereo..i can see if you set it too high, possibly blowing a speaker...had it on my Hero, and now on my dINC...i just set volume in settings to a loud level so when i have it up all the way, its still not at MAX...like setting an amp<gain> with a sub<if u understand that better>

Low sound volume in nexus 7

I was wondering if other users of nexus 7 are also facing this problem of very low sound while playing movies. I have noticed that sound volume is quite low as compared to my mobile. Can anyone help me to increase the volume ?

as repeated in other threads over and over.. This device has crappy useless speakers... Get a Headset. Bluetooth would be best as the headset port can be flaky
I'm sick of this BS
I don't care who you are you are not the final word on what is and isn't crap. Yes there are problems with the speakers and sound through them. But there are many many people with no problems with the speakers. Also the 4.2 update seems to have fixed the popping issue for a lot of people. And the volume has been raised a bit on 4.2, though some people seem to notice it more than others. I noticed it when using headphones.
It's fine if you think something blows but be mature enough to speak for yourself. For example: the speakers on my tab suck, and many people say the same thing.
I hope people can see the difference.

Is it only in movies or is it throughout the entire os? My first unit had a faulty speaker causing the volume to be extremely quiet, almost unhearable. I got a replacement and all has been good with the new unit. I still use headphones when I can though to get the best audio experience I can

I have Jays One+ for a while and are great! Yesterday I have also bought SGS4, and I have to say - the sound is stunning! I'm using PowerAmp Pro and I had to adjust the sound just only a bit. Before that, with HTC Desire, it required more work to get the sound right for me.
Unfortunately, the Jays' App is useless - Android captures the long button press and can't be used to adjusting the volume. Nevertheless one, double and triple press work great! (at least on Desire, but AFAIK it is Android > 4 feature)
Another annoying think is the cord shape and sound it makes when you walk... this scratchy sound can be heard during music play. You need to set the cord, i.e. under the clothes, so it doesn't make noise.
I hope you'll like it anyway!
I've had them for a while. Awesome sound quality

I had the One for a while (not the +), fantastic sounding piece of kit. I got them while I had my Galaxy S with Voodoo Sound, and as I mostly listen to music with a lot of bass, these absolutely killed it, phenomenally deep and clear bass.
I might just get the One+ (the One died at the jack ).
