Anyone else disappointed with the vibrancy of the colours on the Nexus 7? My phone is a Galaxy S II running CM9 with colour temperature calibration done via Fluxi kernel, and side by side comparisons of the Play Store splash page, as an example, really shame the Nexus 7. I know sAMOLED can account for certain differences but I was wondering if anyone knew of any way to colour calibrate the Nexus' screen?
I agree. The colors are a bit washed out and not calibrated correctly. Hopefully an update soon will fix this or at least have an option on the setting menu.

For me, setting brightness manually made a big difference. Out of box, it was flat and dull and boring. Comparing colors to my Viewsonic IPS monitor, seem pretty close.
comparing amoled to ips is silly. amoled is much better.
my galaxy nexus looks better but i don't plan to spend much time holding them side by side.
You can't get an IPS screen to have the same color vibrancy as a Super AMOLED.

Much better at what? Because the One X display is better than my S3

I agree, the screen makes video look really washed out, especially compared to the One X or good quality PC screens. I hope there will be a software to mitigate this issue.
Yes compare to my galaxy note... its wash out. But is very sharp no complaint for $200 vs $700 galaxy note

I tried out a Nexus S, but for a couple unrelated reasons I had to return it. One thing that did bother me slightly was the screen. The edges of text looked fuzzy and had small red dots peppering the edges, I assume due to the pentile matrix.
I've been considering the Photon 4g as a replacement, as they aren't much more used and have better specs. But they still use a pentile matrix. Would the qHD resolution make much of a difference? I don't think moving from the sAMOLED to an LCD will bother me, except if the pentile fuzziness is more pronounced. Also, anything else I should be worried about comparing these phones? I really liked the size of the Nexus S and the performance really didn't bother me. I don't need the world's greatest camera. I mainly want a clear screen and a fluid UI.
I've also considered an Epic 4g Touch but it's quite a bit more expensive and I don't know how that resolution would fare at 4.5" (despite being RGB... better than Nexus S pentile at 4.0"?)
Get the i9023 then, a really crisp and clear screen but wont have the same contrast as the i9020. Also bear in mind what I feel is the real drawback of i9023 that it is noticeably thicker and heavier than the AMOLED version. It is also a bit taller but thats something you wont notice.

Go for a galaxy nexus or galaxy s2. Nexus s is outdated for jellybean, i think

That is just not true. NS is running better than ever on JB. If the GS3 or Galaxy Nexus is not an option, then look around the dev threads for the GS2 and Photon or whatever else you are considering and make sure you can get JellyBean on there some way or another, or at least something with active development.
You should have rooted and used voodoo sound to make colors more crisp
No way to get a i9023 in the US (at least very few available).
And I'm not looking for amazing contrast; I want clear lines. No matter what resolution, vertical lines should be crisp, and they're not. Pixellation is really quite annoying, and I would gladly trade sAMOLED for RGB LCD.
I think you have a defective nexus then. Cuz I have a i9020t and don't have what your talking abouy
It does sound like a defective Nexus S. I tried a lot in the shops before I bought one and I never came across the issue you describe. I ended up with the i9023 Super LCD version and the screen is absolutely fantastic. It would be worth looking around trying to find an i9023 if you're having problems with the AMOLED one.

We all share the same problems due to the lame pentile matrix, just that some of us are more sensitive to actually noticing it
IMO, pentile works when ppi is dense enough, like on the galaxy nexus

Unfortunately I need it on sprint. The i9023 is GSM only, right? Also, I considered the photon 4g but I don't want to wait till q4 for ics and it has a locked bootloader (why oh why, moto?) I would love something like the dinc2 or atrix 2 or sensation but sprint has a terrible selection. Doesn't need to be the fastest but $150 used is reasonable.
Also I got a replacement ns since the other was still activated and this one is turning blue if I tilt it past like 5 degrees in any direction and there is a small blue spot on the bottom right. So sick of problems.

Currently a Galaxy Nexus user since June (Galaxy Note before that), and I'm wondering if there are any plus points for the Galaxy Nexus apart from the removable battery?
I think there are other threads like this in the Q&A might want to look there . I cant think of any other plus points for the GNex though.
Well you might have gotten used to the AMOLED displays. Nexus 4 IPS LCD display isn't pentile and slightly denser so it is technically better but can't match the true blacks of AMOLED.
Most reviews say it is. But don't upgrade for the sake of upgrading. If you are perfectly happy stay (you are still guaranteed one more OS update), but if you find yourself cursing the device, check out the N4.

From Techradar:
"When you're looking at icons on a black background (like in the app drawer), you can't even see the black, if that makes sense. It is so deep, that icons just float."
Win.
The pogo pin-based desktop and car docks are a big plus for the Galaxy Nexus, IMHO.
The GN is a piece of turd compared to the N4...sell it, it would net you around $150 on Gazzell, add the difference and get the new thing.

I've compared the AMOLED displays to IPS, the One X's to be precise, and IPS LCD looks sooo much better. The AMOLED displays make everything look slightly blue, so when I had anything white opened, it always looked blue.
Not gonna sell the GNex but will get a nexus 4 as soon as it's out.

Yea the whites and blacks on the IPS display are just about unmatched. On my gnex even with custom kernels the display was still jacked up looking. Stock was like a puke yellow and a good kernel was like a light bluish white. Never could get it white and or black. The s3 color reproduction was a lot better. But the IPS display still kills it in natural looking colors and the closest color reproduction to real life colors. Everything just pops
Yes, it is an upgrade!
Mainly, the hardware: internals, screen, etc... but over all, the build quality. I'm never buying a Samsung phone again. That maybe a little rash, but, that is how I feel at the moment.
worth the upgrade for me.. i bought the gnex in june also, but just sold it for $300. I lost about $70 bucks for the upgrade, but im sure it'll be well worth it

hello should move from a galaxy nexus to a nexus4 considering only the question of the display? I care that the display is really powerful, so I ask, it's worth it?
Hell yeah its worth it first day screen looks washed out but its getting better and better samething with nexus 7. Viewing angle on sunlight is just amazing even on 30% brightness whereas on gnex its all dark . black is pure so black oh did I say this phone is faster than the light ?

So I yesterday I compared a display of Galaxy Nexus and that of the new iPhone5. Unfortunately the iPhone5 has a screen with much higher detail. I want to know if it's worth it to go from a new galaxy nexus nexus 4, that is, has a screen that comes close in quality to that of the new iPhone5?

If you fancy that much the iPhone 5 you shouldnt be looking here in XDA mate
Iphone 5: 1136 x 640 pixels, 326 ppi
Nexus 4: 1280 x 768 pixels, ~318 ppi
Yes also Galaxy nexus has a 318 PPI but it's a pentile panel and details of screen is poor respect to other device.

Honestly I wish it had OLED, pentile or not. Im not very impressed by the blacks on this phone, and once it gets dark the screen doesnt look nearly as good as AMOLED, I would say my old low res galaxy s pentile AMOLED looks better after the sun goes down. Its also too desaturated for me, which is a frequent review complaint, theres no punch.
Most people seem to prefer IPS screens over pentile AMOLED but the blacks suck so bad in comparison I'll take deep blacks over jaggy text that you cant really see unless its right up to your face.
imo: blacks>>>>>>>>>every other aspect of a display

the only benefits of PenTile matrix AMOLED screens:
- black is extremely black
- maybe save an unnoticeable amount of battery
the only benefits of RGB matrix AMOLED screens:
- black is extremely black
- colours are vibrant in a cartoony way
- you dont notice pixelation, texts are crisp
- maybe save an unnoticeable amount of battery
benefits of RGB matrix LCD IPS screens:
- extreme viewing angles
- vibrant and realistic colours
- white is white
- you dont notice pixelation, texts are crisp
- colours dont fade
and since a lot of AMOLED uses PenTile, your options are between a ****ty amoled or an amazing LCD

My opinion if you want...
HD AMOLED screens are amazing... I was very disappointed to learn Nexus 4 was not using it this time.
If you did not own one before you might not miss it... but the contrast is sooooo much better then the kinda blacks you get on an LCD
Plus the technology is amazing... organic material that emits vivid colored light... vs... just white light shining trough color filters like LCD... this is a very old concept.
And you can only notice pentile under a microscope with HD screens

I know that everyone has different taste in screens, so you really have to look at it to decide which you like best.
I haven't seen the Nexus 4 yet, but I compared the Optimus G to the Galaxy S3 and HTC One X, and I thought that the Optimus G looked just as good as the One X. I couldn't see a difference in colors. Icons looked exactly the same to me. I compared the Chome icon on both and the saturation looked the same. I personally can't stand HD AMOLED, and I can notice pentile clearly on the GS3 from the normal distance I hold the phone away from my face and I find it very distracting.
I find the colors on the Optimus G very pleasing while the HD AMOLED in the GS3 looks dirty to me. The colors are too oversaturated and whites don't look right. I can't stand looking at the GS3 screen. I was very excited when I heard that the Nexus 4 was moving to IPS. I wish they could make an OLED with the same color saturation as IPS but the blacks of the OLED.
So, for anyone trying to decide on the Nexus 4, my advise is to go to the store and look at both the Optimus G and Galaxy S3 and decide for yourself.
i, for some reason hate amoled (pentile) screens. i cant stand the screen burn, over pixelated edges, and the "ink spot" effect it has on super dark colors. ill pick dull-ish blacks over those issues, and i dont like everything to be dark colored so it defeats the purpose. thats just my 2 cents though. lol
thats why i got so excited about the nexus 4 screen

I've never used an AMOLED screen until I saw the Galaxy S4 but it does look really nice and the blacks are unbelievable. However, almost every reviewer and person I talk to says how AMOLED is garbage and that LCD is by far better.
Does anybody actually prefer AMOLED to LCD?
Well... everyone in this forum lol.
AMOLED is better since it can be set to look like LCD (color-wise). LCD can't be like AMOLED no matter what.
