been using es explorer to mount my smb drives, found that it was one of the only ones that would allow me to "stream" or "open with" other video programs
cifsmanager would be nice if your shares support it (available on playstore) but you have to have a cifs enabled kernel, which i think the development thread has. this would allow you to use any filemanager you want
other programs to test:
mount manager
movie browser hd for tablet
Apply the cifs kernel patch and use cifs manager to mount your share to /storage/sdcard0/share/ then your apps will index your remote drive( for music and such)

Would you please tell us how to do this? I have been searching around the Nexus 7 forums for several days trying to find out how to enable CIFS. I want to do this with the STOCK rom. I do not want to use a custom rom. Is this possible? I am okay with unlocking my bootloader/rooting the device.
Where is the cifs kernel patch? I saw one kernel in the development forum that enables CIFS, but I do not know if that kernel will work with the stock OS.
If anyone can help me understand this I would be grateful.

Does anyone know of a rom that has the ability of pen testing wifi? Or if not, a good or rom that offers good performance and that would be able to loop backtrack?

you can run backtrack 5 natively or chroot it but even if you do the pentesting abilities such as aircrack-ng wont work theres an app for dosing in the marketplace to test wifi strength ;( I've tried workarounds but hadn't fount one
any rooted rom pretty much will allow you to run Ubuntu or backtrack 5 natively but you have to sacrifice your recovery as for now I'm currently running the latest Ubuntu natively and its not bad not a PC experience but not bad at all
page 36 of this thread has the guide you need 8gigs free of internal memory

The problem I am running into is that when I try to run the bootbt file in the terminal it tells me what you see in the picture
I have been trying to find a way to get through this part... I have busybox installed like it says, but I don't see the bash file

Got any specific names for roms? I want to look into some. I think I need a different boot loader though.... let the fun begin.

Just root. Or, you could use Nexus Media Importer sans root.
Need root like what listeruk says. You could however use stickmount, then it will show up in your file explorer as usb. Links here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wsMSwxLDMsImV1LmNoYWluZmlyZS5zdGlja21vdW50Il0.
Any one point me in the direction of getting cifs working please?
I'm on smooth took and bricked kernel, using cifs manager from the market. Looked through a few kernel threads but no one seems to mention if cifs is included these days.
Thanks

Do you running Android 4.2?
If you do, it is the same problem as everyone else has with mounting.
I already written about that. But it is not really a solution... The apps need to be changed.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2065856
Yeah 4.2.1. Thanks for the reply, ill take a look.

Run the following command (requires busybox). It will tell you if the current kernel was built with CIFS support or not.
Code:
$ zcat /proc/config.gz | grep CIFS
What are you guys using for adblock on your rooted s4?
tried adblock plus, fixed the settings. worked for regular browser, and chrome, but some apps stopped connecting.
Surely, there is a global adblock that works on all apps on s4.
I use Ad away. I think its pretty beast.
Adaway for sure.
Adblock plus using easylist, that one seems to work the best for me on my tablet, and fanboy's list works better on my phone(captivate glide).

Edit: Adblock plus isn't working after a backup & reboot, so its back to adaway

The one included in CrossBreeder.

Ended up installing from https://code.google.com/p/ad-away/ via fdroid. Apparently most of the current tools rely on modifying the hosts file to direct ad sites to localhost..
Crossbreader looks like they have implemented something along the lines of pixelserv in tomato where it serves up an empty white space of 1x1 pixel, which I assume has aesthetic value, though I wonder if it provides a performance advantage to the above options?

Did you install this on top of the kernel / rom? I currently have kuban (rom) and agat (kernel). Can I just install this crossbreader on top?

Yes sir. You dont need to wipe or anything. Just put it onto to your storage and flash it from recovery and it does the rest itself and your good to go.
Read the original thread if you want an indepth explanation to what exactly it does, it is really thorough. Also be sure to also grab the uninstall zip from the thread and put it on your phone as well. If you ever want to take off Crossbreeder for any reason, just go into recovery, flash that zip and your good to go.

Wow that was surprisingly easy. I made the switch, to crossbreader. Hopefully this works faster than the hosts file method. I've heard good things about frandom, but no idea how to get it to work with kuban rom and agat kernel. I have a 64gb exfat microsdxc, so am staying away from other kernels for now.
What is your setup with cross breader (rom/kernel, etc...). My friends keep saying how their iphone scrolls faster and I would like to show them otherwise wit h this android.

Yup process takes like two seconds! :good:
You don't need to do anything to get frandom to "work". If the kernel your using has the frandom module, which Agat's kernel does indeed have, Crossbreeder automatically detects it and utilizes it. All three kernels out right now, Faux, Agat, KT, all have the frandom module so you don't need to worry about it. (Actually I'm not sure about Faux but you get what I mean).
I'm just running Force Rom 1.1 because none of the TW roms are actually much different from stock other then removed bloat and a little theming at the moment, so I'll be on that until the goodies start pouring out.
In the meantime I'm running KT's kernel OC'd to 1998 or 2106 with a few tweaks here and there in Ktweaker. Plus Crossbreeder 5.21.13. (Also installed Viper4Droid for sound modifications)
Hi,
I want to overclock my tablet(using this steps http://nexus7.wonderhowto.com/how-to/nexus-7-feeling-slow-heres-you-overclock-for-insane-speeds-increased-performance-0145908/) but i want to know 2 things:
(1)Is this will avoid the warranty? if yes then how to disable/remove the over clock after use it and get back the warranty?
(2)Am i will lose all my apps/games? if yes then what is the best backup app that backup apps and locate it to PC and backup the APK/data/save?
Thanks.
1) I believe rooting does void the warranty. But it's easy to revert back to stock if necessary. The easiest method is to use one of the toolkits found in the Nexus 7 Development section.
I also suggest you don't use Motley Kernel as the link you provided shows. That kernel hasn't been updated in quite a while. I suggest M-Kernel or FrancoKernel. Both of which can be found in the Nexus 7 Original Android Development Section.
2) If you have already rooted your tablet, flashing a new kernel will not cause you to lose data. But if you have not rooted the tablet yet, the unlocking process will erase all your data. Best app for backups is Titanium Backup. But make sure you transfer the backup files to your PC because unlocking will erase your sdcard.

You'll need to root to overclock. If you're not familiar with the terms or procedures being used here then I strongly suggest reading up and searching the forums first, otherwise you could do some damage.

I tested the motley kernel and was working so good and there isn't any lag but I want to know if that maybe corrupt my tablet after long use

He meant rooting, which is a prerequisite. Rooting your tablet has voided the warranty in and of itself. Overclocking is definitely outside of the scope of the warranty as you are stressing the hardware beyond its intended parameters. If you don't know what you're doing, there is the potential of permanently damaging your SoC. There's no hiding that if you choose to fraudulently make a warranty claim.
