No, this is not associated with piracy as are most cases with this app. After many weeks of extensive testing I've learned that Lucky Patcher can drastically increase the battery life of Android devices. There are a lot of apps out there that stop ads in applications but that doesn't stop the application from waking up your device and sending a request for the ad. I would barely make 8 hours of battery life with that happening and after using Lucky Patcher to remove Google ads from apps that had them my battery life has tripled. Test it for yourselves.

So wouldn't that make things like Ad Free and ROM Toolbox illegal since they almost do the same thing when it comes to blocking ads? Those apps stop you from receiving ads while lucky patcher stops the apps from sending a request for them. Both stop the ads while lucky patcher stops the apps from sending a request for them which will increase your battery life. A while back I read something on MSN news about how these ads diminish battery life and this is just a way to stop that. Either way, lucky patcher AND apps like ROM Toolbox and Ad Free would technically be illegal because they both stop the ads. It all depends on how you use them. That's like saying apps like Root Explorer are illegal because you can copy data you've downloaded online for a paid app and use it for free when most of us use it in different ways.

Not to be rude, but its MY phone. I can put on/take off, block whatever I want on it. I get all my ad blockers from the Play Store.

I played around with permissions for fun. I changed some on words free and it resulted in a boot loop. Wipe cache wipe dalvik fix permissions and still a boot loop.. I had to do a full wipe.. be warned. Do a full backup if you plan to mess around with this thing

I think the major issue is "cracking other apps". AdFree simply blocks ad urls (via HOSTS), it does not block the application from requesting the ad from the internet. The app in question modifies other program code to remove the ad functionality, etc - this is the licensing issue....
Edit: I don't use ROM Toolbox, but its description does say that it blocks ads by IP as well, same as AdFree. Blocking Internet traffic in/out is one thing, modifying other licensed code for this app's reason is quite another. While I understand the battery life issue and it does make sense, you agree to the ads when you install the (quite often Free) apps.....
Edit2: Don't get me wrong, if you use it and it works, use it - it is your phone. This is simply the reason you won't find it on the Play Store!

That's the problem in itself. Yes. Free apps. They get paid for the advertising. So modifying the app or just blocking it via host files does the same thing. Stops the ads. Meaning that both are technically illegal.

I love the android market and all of the free apps, but a large problem with it is that some of the apps do not have a paid version that removes the ads on them.

I find, that tweaking /system/etc/hosts file (like here: h**p://someonewhocares.org/hosts/ ) results in quite good ad blocking mechanism (some rom's already do that "out of the box"). You'll need root for that though.

All the suggestions in this thread are good, however make sure you download and install "Airpush Detector".
Sadly more and more App are sneaking in Airpush malware inside their apps and "Airpush Detector" does a solid job finding them.
Finally if you do find a "suspect App" having this malware, please put it in the Market comments that the App has it so we can cut down on this BS...

tried it, it didn't do anything for game ads on my atrix.
i like the rest of the app though... i was able to uninstall a few of my other root apps in place of it.

That's weird, because it worked for me in a bunch of my apps (Reckless Racing, Pandora, Google Reader, etc). I have a stupid question and I'll ask if you applied the four different types of blocks (Ads, Porn, Casino, Risky)?

It is probably related to an app you have already installed. Go through any apps you aren't sure are from trusted sources/devs.

The sad thing is mate you can't trust the market. You have to be careful what your installing!
Always check what permissions needs the app you are downloading depends of the type you dl it should need the right permissions. So lets say you dl a game and it needs permission for your contacts and call services then it is up to you to dl it I would never. And as long the developers have no other way to get cash they implant ofc in their apps some advertises so be carefully all the time.
And market is like Facebook a no money platform that helps people to find things, but it moment check what it provides, it is on the user to report bad apps. So many people abuse that.

As a rule of thumb, I don't click on any links from any app, except the browser
I use a program that lets you assign permissions to any app. Anything that I install that I don't think needs to access contacts, location etc, I just block.
It has a side benefit of blocking the stupid ads in the apps also.
Try to use "LBE privacy guard" from the market its free!

I get this when I play certain games.
its just an in game advert made to look official which links to an app in the market.
It reads something like " You have two Battery updates available"
Download addon detektor then you can see whats causing the the push ad
And remove that battery thingy its probably the one that steals your contacts for spam

Unfortunately you have been hit by a 'Scareware' attack.
As Android is becoming more popular and unlike Apple which has tighter control the Android OS is much more open to attacks such as this.
You really have to be on your guard watching for these malicious attacks.

Ads in apps are hardly the issue here. Airpush ads show up even when the app is supposed to be closed, which means an unwanted background service and the battery drain to go with it. Some apps have even used airpush to present ads disguised as reputable notifications, like the android version of the web popup that looks like antivirus software. And none of them will indicate which app they came from (because the developers who use it know that their app would be uninstalled after the first ad)
But if you can't earn money legitimately, have no clue what people really want or just don't care, then this would probably seem like an attractive option (maybe even so much that you might be tempted to make a thread about it in a forum somewhere...)
Here are two apps to help you find and remove apps that are made by developers who know they won't earn much through the merit of their work alone:

The first one is open source, and I can vouch for its effectiveness. Unless I'm mistaken, the only way devs get money for ads is when people actually click on them - even if we don't use adblock, ignoring the annoying banners has the same effect on the developers' accounts
That's why some apps seem to have crappy layouts, such that you accidentally click an ad instead of the button you were aiming for. The layout often was actually much more carefully planned out than it seems.
And that brings me to another shady aspect of airpush ads - clicking on the notification is like clicking the ad. I don't mind ads where I have a choice, but even CM's swipe-to-dismiss feature doesn't necessarily clear out the notification permanently - the only sure-fire way to clear it out is to click on it, so the only way to clear the ad is to click the ad or uninstall the offending app... I always use the second option, and I'm sure that I'm not the only one

I use lookout and it works great for me. Scans everything i download and backs up contacts. Also has good locate and scream case you lose it and will save last location before your phone dies. But as Cnexus said being observant of what you download is your best protection. Hope this helps!

Watch the permissions when you install and steer clear of skecthy sources.
I use web root secure anywhere. It has turned up some Trojans in some ROMs which kind of blew me away. I thought everything on xda was safe.

Well to begin with, the fact that android is based on Linux makes it even harder to exploit because of the whole permissions structure
On top of that you have the Android app permissions system and you have something very difficult to exploit in itself....I've never gotten one, but I've heard of malicious apps getting released (on the play store) back in the baby stages of Android (when froyo was just out) that used the froyo rooting exploits to bypass security checks and mess with the stuff on your phone.
But other than that, I've never heard of a any virus/exploit/targeted attack on android devices
The latest Android virus that I know of is BadNews.. It hit a few apps a few days ago, in the google play store. I believe it infected something like 2 Million phones.
So saying "I just get them from Google Play store" doesn't keep you safe.. Because apps are not tested before they hit the play store, and most of the android virus hit via the play store.
And if you have never heard of a virus that targets the Android, it's because you haven't taken the time to actually see if any actually exist. Linux is not hard to exploit, and neither is Android.

Completely agree on that the best anti virus is yourself. I don't even use one on my computers because most viruses mask themselves as anti virus programs.

Rom Toolbox pro still does adblocking, though I'm not sure if it's as good as or better than Adaway or ABP were. Rom Toolbox Pro is absolutely worth the money for any root user anyway.
Google has also sent an email to jrummy, so even that will be taken down soon.

Really? Nothing is stopping you from side loading apk's outside of the Play Store, and the adblock apps did break Google's TOS.
But you're right, no one likes ads, but how do you think devs earns money? By giving away their hard work for free? Nope.
If you don't like ads, then buy an ad-free version of the app or side load an adblocker and move on.

If you have a rooted phone,
Search a adblock host file here on xda or in a rom you have somewhere and put it manualy with rootexplorer in
/System/etc
Replace the empty existed one
I have a lot of ad block host file on my sdcard and all my rooted phone have it and no ads come on my phone.
All apps on the store just replace/mirror your default host file with a updated one.
But I think it's better to do this manualy,because this host file is very sensistive for network and if you have a bad line in,then a virus or malware could pass.
Or
if it to strong,then you cannot surf on certain site or watch video.
To edit it,
just go on google dash and ads notifier panel,
and copy all network adress,then put them in your edited host file for block it

Think so too. Installed Fdroid.apk and AdAway, Avast said nothing after scanning the files.
