[SOLVED] Unable to "keep WiFi on during sleep" - Galaxy S II General

Got a new SGS2 a week ago. Came with stock Samsung Android 4.0.3.
The WiFi connection keeps dropping when not actively used, which is unwanted because I can no longer receive SIP calls (or Skype/Viber/WhatsApp/Gtalk/... for that matter) at that point.
Please note that this is not the "Wifi During Sleep option won't stick" problem half of the similar threads are about, nor is it the "Cannot connect with Wifi" problem that most others are about like these:

Wifi problems with latest rom ICS, an idea!!

SGS1/SGS2 Wifi connects but no Internet data transfer

Experiencing Wifi Drops / problems? Try this solution....
.. plus a lot older similar threads.
I do not have those problems. The setting sticks perfectly, and my phone connects to WiFi perfectly.
This problem is that WiFi drops the connection (is suddenly totally disaboled) everytime nothing is happening (e.g. screen is off), even though it is set to stay connected.
I have tried this at 3 different networks, so it's probably not because of the WiFi router.
According to hwaddress.com I have a Samsung Electro Mechanics WiFi chip so there's no correlation with suspected trouble chips like the Murata Manufacturing.
I have tried the open source https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.wahtod.wififixer]Wifi Fixer which claims to be able to keep the connection going, but it can't keep the connection alive either so it effectively just reconnects when the screen is activated, in stead of reconnecting manually.
I don't know if these readings are relevant, but interestingly, Wifi Fixer always claims that the "connection is bad" and shows a signal quality of -200 (I assume 0 is best quality). The indicator in the task bar shows no 'bars' at this point either, although at the same time the 'networks' tab from Wifi Fixer shows that this network has best quality. And the connection is perfect at this moment and I can stream video just fine. Some time later, the connection does show a valid quality, and bars in the taskbar.

Any hints on how to tackle this issue?

I have now factory reset and flashed to Paranoid Android (based on CyanogenMod 9), and I still have this problem. I haven't seen anyone with a similar problem.
Wifi disconnects after going to sleep, even though it is set to always stay connected.
Other SGS2's does not do this, even with the same firmware. I need to use Wifi Fixer again to restore the connection when the screen goes back on.
At this point, the connection is immediately perfect, but as you can see in the first picture, the indicator in the taskbar is indicating no connection, and I am also not mislead by a data connection over 3g, which is disabled. Wifi Fixer itself also sais there is no connection.
After 5 minutes, both the indicator and wifi related apps suddenly say there is a connection, as you can see in the second picture.

Solved
After six days, I found out that SIPdroid, the app I use for receiving SIPcalls, which I usually install without giving it a second thought, just like inserting my SIM card, is actually causing WIFI to disconnect after 15 minutes of inactivity, completely ignoring the Android sleeping policy setting for WiFi.
Anyone using SIPdroid - or anyone feeling sorry for me talking to myself as a n00b in my own lonely topic without anyone throwing me a bone - should star THIS ISSUE** to bring this under attention of the developers.

I think the difference between wifi indicator connection and actual connection on reconnect are some kind of software latency and are actually irrelevant to the disconnect problem.

Yes, I found the solution. I had to uninstall SipDroid. I am not kidding. I use SIP a lot so that's the one single app I installed immediately. But with CyanogenMod you can have SIP from within the contact list so I am not missing the app.
A design flaw causes SIPdroid to force Wifi off. Logic dictates that the apps should follow wishes set out in global options, but they did not agree with me on this.
It took me a while to figure this out, so I hope you have this app installed, otherwise you'll have to find yourself a completely different reason, and you're gonna have a bad time. But even so, I am 93,5% sure that it is caused by an app. If you do have the correct settings, there will be no system problems. Only app-induced problems.

From the opening post "I do not have those problems. The setting sticks perfectly, and my phone connects to WiFi perfectly.
This problem is that WiFi drops the connection (is suddenly totally disaboled) everytime nothing is happening (e.g. screen is off), even though it is set to stay connected."
I have this same problem (at least I realized it with 4.1.2 LSD rom). Wifi is running and shows it has reception but connection is lost. And because it shows it has reception it doesn't switch to mobile data. Quite annoying problem.

Like I said in my previous answer, it was an app that caused this totally unintuitive seemingly broken behaviour. I almost sent my phone back.
Took me a week to figure out it was SIPdroid.

I'm on STOCK ROM JB 4.1.1 rooted, I use VIBER, WHATSAPP, NIMBUZZ, TANGO, SKYPE etc....which app is causing this guide me Please...

For me it was SipDroid. I don't know/use Tango and/or Nimbuzz. I hope you'll find the problem. With some bad luck it could be your rooted firmware. You can try a clean CM or PA and install one app per day until you notice Wifi is broken again.

Thanks for the Information!

Here's a solution: Don't use SipDroid. If you want the best quality with Google Voice/Android, use this method. I made a 12-part video tutorial on how to set it up. So far, I've had many people confirm this method is by far the best option.
I mention the hardware and software requirements in the first video, so you'll know if this is ideal for you.

How much data usage!!??

So, I use netcounter to keep track of my data usage, as I'm sure many others do. My Vodafone contract, that I started a year ago with my HTC Magic, gives me 500MB a month. This has always been plenty - sometimes getting a bit close if I decide to download a couple of custom roms while out the house.
The last week or so though, my usage has SKYROCKETED for no apparent reason.
Netcounter says I've used 302.95MB of non-wifi data TODAY, and it's 9:30am!! I've just woken up! PLUS I've had wifi turned on throughout the night!
What seems suspicious to me is that of that 300+MB only 8.23MB was recieved - 294.71MB was SENT from my phone, between midnight and now, over 3g, when it was connected to the wifi the whole time.
I've apparently used over 1GB in the last 7 days. 90% of which was sent from the phone. I have absolutely no clue what is causing this, and to be honest I'm somewhat praying that it's a glitch with netcounter... otherwise my phone bill is not going to be pretty...
Anyone know of any apps I may have installed that could be causing this? Or any other processes that could have the same effect? As it was so much data sent I thought maybe it was different apps sending anonymous usage data, but switching off all of those that I could find doesn't seem to have solved it D:
I used about 700MB last month...
My bill says 3,7 Gigas...
I tend to use & abuse tethering...
12€ unlimited data plan. Isn´t it at Voda UK?
Check what apps/services are running, could be something going a-miss somewhere.
Seems a bit wierd you had a load of xfer over 3g even with wifi enabled though - maybe try and force 2G only and see what the logging program says then?

Sadly unlimited isn't actually unlimited. 500MB "fair usage" and I think you get charged when you go over that...
As Highland3r says: just use wifi and force 2g only. I use netcounter too, and it says I've only used 3.6mb 3g and 130.73mb over wifi in the last 7 days (only had phone for 5 days actually).
If you think it's a glitch try reinstalling netcounter or something.

I'm in the UK with 3 Unlimited Data Plan (1GB Fare Usage)
I use 3G watchdog to make sure i dont go over and it works a treat, i ALWAYS surf the internet download ROMs and apps using 3G but i havent used much lol
40MB used in the last 5 days, ( i havent downloaded any ROMs for a while though lol)
Maybe u shud try using 3G watchdog at the same time as the app your using at the minute
it will show you if the app is messing up or just confirm that you are somehow sending alot of data to someone through 3G
Same thing happening to me!
Although here in Argentina is much more limited, but I try not to use EDGE, and it consumed 1mb download and 26mb upload.
I don't know what does it upload...
LOL Vodaphone sucks hard. I get 3gb with T-Mobile USA.

If you are using the news and weather widget to display news stories, you'll notice that every single time it cycles to a new story it uses a tiny bit of data. If you've set it to also download pictures for stories, I could see how overnight it could use a ridiculous amount of data.

You wouldnt expect that to upload data though?
Did you try another app to measure and/or killing 3G and seeing if that makes a difference?
It's probably a wild guess, but do you use the Voice Recognition a lot? It send the audio to Google and returns text, so it uploads much more than it downloads.
But I don't think it would be that much.
Well even with wifi turned on, andriod by default puts the wifi to sleep when your phone(display) does to sleep too. So if you had some culprit program running the background, even with wifi turned on it'll still use the cell network by default as long as your phone as asleep.
So... I've been monitoring the usage throughout the day...
Reached about 20MB of data over wifi today, which is reasonable for the amount of browsing I've done on it. At last check (about 2-3 hours ago) cell data was at 0B, as it should be with wifi on.
Pulled it out of my pocket just now - 3G icon was in the notifications bar... thought that was probably a bad sign... 65.42MB 3G data used... 95% sent, 5% received...

Sensorly turns itself on if you do any of the following:
Turn on or off GPS
Turn on or off WiFi
Turn on the phone
In addition, when the app starts, it will turn on wifi.
It's a cool app, but if you have GPS on, and it kicks in and you forget to kill it, your battery is down 50% in an hour. It's extremely frustrating that something so useful is so damn annoying. It's almost malware. I uninstalled it from my phone.
I uninstalled sensorly last night... so it's not that.
Might try uninstalling WaveSecure. Pretty sure it's not auto-backing-up anything as on the site I only have the sms and call data from when I purposely told it to back up... but worth a try...
the only other apps I've added recently are...
Gmail Notifier
Gesture Search
Dialer One

I had the same issue a couple of weeks back, I was at the point of only setting my APN to the correct value only when I wanted data enabled, usually just for an hour a day over lunch due to it going crazy downloading something. After a week of doing this the issue appears to have gone away and I am back to leaving data enabled 24/7 with an average of 10-15MB per day inc normal useage. From my orginaly post on this forum I was given the following advice to try and track down the issue...

dial *#*#4636#*#*
go into battery history
change the first drop down to "network usage" and see which apps are using the most.

How I more than Doubled my Battery life with a simple toggle.

Greetings,
Guys, first of all, I'm no pro, this worked for me, it may not work for you, and its not the 'solution' for people who wish to be connected to internet 24/7.
- I have no Dataplan, Vibrant would connect and eat through my balance on EDGE/GPRS.
- I downloaded an app from Google Market, "Quick Settings" (search for it)
- Run Quick Settings and Turn off Mobile Data. It should show "Disconnected"
Basically, I did this with intention to save my precious hard earned money but the side effect appears to be that my Battery life suddenly has gone insane.
Before when I did have GPRS on, I would regularly check Advanced Task killer and kill apps in attempt to stop apps from connecting.
My use has been more or less same, I'm not a Power user, just take it to office, use now and then, and the battery would finish up in ~9 hours, 10 tops.
Anyway, here is the result

You can do this by just holding power then pressing Data Network.. or simply going into WiFi settings and disabling the phone from being connected from the internet.
Of course if you're using the phone without it being connected to the internet, a lot of power isn't going to be consumed. It's a smartphone, supposed to use the internet on it.
A tip I would recommend is to use SuperPower and it can do a bunch of tweaks to improve your battery (screen off; disables data.. things like that).
i dont have a dataplan either, but i DO text, if i do that, will it just turn off all communications like text and phone calls? I only use web when im at home with my WIFI.
I'm just wondering, why did you get a smartphone with no data? I see that you're not even using wifi. Why not just get a Windows 6.1 phone or a Blackberry or something?

I do have access to WiFi, tho I use it more at home and other places, less during work.
I dont have a data plan because there is only EDGE/GPRS available on it, no 3G *yet*.
So when I do want to check on something, I simply turn it on for a minute or two, check on my mails or anything else etc and be done. Otherwise, what was happening was, I'd get connected even tho when I did not wanted it to connect. It was costing me for nothing. I can do other syncs etc at home or 100 other places that have wifi.
I did not get Windows 6.1 phone or Blackberry is because Android > them both. I assume you know that already. + Awesome screen is awesome.
As I said very clearly earlier and I shall repeat it for you, this may be useful for people who have same profile of usage patterns as myself.
Please tell me that 19 hours isn't the best you got.

As for disabling the internet, i just check the box in settings to not use data. under wireless settings or something. I don't pay for data because no 3g in my area also.
Why not just put the Power Control widget on your home screen somewhere? The button between GPS and Brightness toggles whether you allow apps to sync on the 'Net or not.
IOW if you turn that toggle off you won't get email unless you launch your email reader, you won't get anything from the 'Net unless you initiate it.
Me? I just installed Onyx from Team Whiskey and I can go 3 days without worrying about my battery life if I'm just doing limited usage of the phone.

Gps BUG: ask for a fix + demo video ! ! !

As suggested by a guy I add here an important request.
I hope the moderators don't delete this post, it is very important.
I don't joke, i will make a DONATION to a developer that will find a solution for a gps bug that affects most of the stock Xperia 2011 phones, but not all.
The bug is simple, i explain it better then possible:
i turn on the Gps, wait for a fix, and start to navigate, after 5 minutes the signal drops for about 30 seconds, then works for other 5 minutes and again drops, other 5 minutes and drops, and again again again
every 5 minutes the gps drops without exceptions
now the datas collected in months of this problem:
1) this happens with traffic data OFF, background data OFF, absolutely no contact to the network at all, and offline app like Sygic, Navigon, Copilot etc
2) this not happen with Maps, also in offline mode, with a little portion of map downloaded before, and no data traffic
3) this not happen with Data enabled or Wifi enabled
4) this also not happen in Flight mode, and perhaps it is the most important information, so is not an hardware problem.
5) with the build 3.0.1.A.145 this didn't happen with data disabled but i don't want to downgrade
Here a log of the bug by a user with the same problem.

I have ready also a video, but wait an official reply from Sony, until to start to share it.
What do we think about? :
for an unknown reason Sony firmware attempts to collect data every 5 minutes, also if the phone have data disabled. If don't find data, there is a drop out !!
Basically A-gps work always, even if data are disabled (i have no data traffic, my sim is disabled for internet connection), and this must not happen, because it causes a drop, its attempt is not silent for who have data OFF.
So, please, say me you can do something, you are best developers then Sony ones.
And please, i don't want see post like: "I don't have this issue", this bug can be releted to country, or particular situations that are present in a phone and not in an other, but most of the 2011 range have it.
This discussion is only for tecnichal informations.
If you need something else, let me know, i will add all the infos.
A donate wait to who will fix the bug definitively !!!
First P.S. for who is interesting to help me, but I see perhaps this bug is too difficult for you and noone can help me,
I tried different gps.conf file, trying to delete all the command lines releted to internet, like Xtra or NTP server
now my gps.conf file is so:
# DEBUG LEVELS: 0 - none, 1 - Error, 2 - Warning, 3 -Info
# 4 - Debug, 5 - Verbose
DEBUG_LEVEL = 3
# Intermediate position report, 1=enable, 0=disable
INTERMEDIATE_POS=0
# Accuracy threshold for intermediate positions
# less accurate positions are ignored, 0 for passing all positions
# ACCURACY_THRES=5000
also this setting doesn't work.
But now i know something more: the gps try to collect xtra data from internet until it receives all effemeridi informations.
It continues to drop every 5 minutes because it searches first these infos from internet, but if doesn't find a connection drops and then collect the infos again from the sky, until next 5 minutes. If in this time receive the xtra data from sky, it doesn't drop more, but if not a new attempt connection with data disabled of course, results in a new drop out.
This repeat every 5 minutes until the gps receive the effemeridi informations, this can happen for 20-30 minutes or more.
So it meas 5-6 disconnections every 5 minutes.
The absurd thig is that if I start in flight mode i get a fix in 10 second and can use gps for one hour without issue.
So this means gps really doesn't need these xtra files from internet !!!!! But Sony continue to believe so.
Demo video added.
Very Very frustrating bug, and terrible Sony assistance.
6 months and actually no fix included in a firmware
As it's regular and seems to be linked to the fact that data is enabled, I'll say that a service is working with GPS only when data is activated.
I didn't use GPS long enough with my arc S, i'll try.
What rom are you using ? I'll say that this problem may be cause by a software interfering with GPS every 5 minutes (and surely sending data as it seems to be data dependant).
It could be interesting to watch logs with logcat and look what is runing on the phone when the problem occurs.
Have you even searched the forums for a solution?
Check this thread, there is a Sony Ericsson specific patch. Get it here.
Make a nandroid backup before flashing the zip and good luck!

It is surelely data dependant, but is not a software to interfer with Gps
is a bug feature of the stock xperia firmware to ask data every 5 minutes even if data is disabled from the android menu.
It should ask data to assist Gps, only if data is enabled, and not if is disabled !!!!
That's point.
If is disabled, the bug ask for data and this result i a drop.
That is no Bug, that is just a feature to save your device , when GPS allway on, device will be to hot

Oh my god, please read carefully
wich feature?
Can't use gps for an amount of time without a drop out every 5 minutes is a feature??
In your opinion a disconnection of 30 seconds save the phone to be too hot
you are a little confused, or you don't read well

And you are a little hysterical, to be honest.
Just because people don't share your empathy, it doesn't mean you should bash them.
We are trying to help you and your attitude is discouraging.
You disregarded my above post, there is a mod to improve stability and connection.
You should try it, it might help you.

Totally agree!
Sent from my ST18i using XDA App
Sorry, I'm not hysterical, but i can't hear this is a feature.
It's a reply without sense at all, placed there for unknown reason.
To say that the phone becomes too hot is absurd, because a Gps can run for hours and hours, is its specific way to work and the reason for which it was invented.
I feel teased from this reply.
My attitude isn't discouraging.
i just searched the thread you are linked, but the problem is different
that method increases the performance and is based on agps
in my case i have to disable Agps, and not overperforms it to get faster the fix or to find more satelites.
And like i said before, is not only one case, but probably most of 2011 xperia have this issue, officially recognized by Sony.
Now is better to reply here only if someone has got interesting informations about the bug.
Other post will be reported to moderators and deleted.

Interesting informations #1 - You are asking questions in the General forum instead of Q&A, This means you have a bug or a feature??

T-Mobile has Finally released the Android 11 Updgrade for OnePlus 8 5G

The wait is OVER! T-Mobile OnePlus 8 5G Android 11 update has been released (well to select few with issues for sure). This is not official but I can confirm that I do infact have it. No root. Yes I am unlocked and came from Sprint but that played no part in the Update I received.

Go ahead and check now. I was a former Sprint - Tmobile Failed TNX Transfer. After months of being told complete nonsense, they proactively called me, troubleshot and without notice I checked again and there it was. This could be a TS Procedure, however, see attached Screenshots and I believe everyone will see it Feb 2-4th. My experience as one of the initial transfers has been anything but smooth. However, I commend their Customer Service and their Tech SUpport for owning the issue and this may have saved me as a customer. Mind you I will absolutely not buy from them again, however, I will sell this oneplus 8 5g that is unlocked for the 8t/8Pro or 9 Pro unlocked and stick with them for the outstanding customer service!
AOD doesn't have the all day function like global does, modem cant switch from 5g to 4g without a reboot or airplane mode toggle, wifi calling works when if "feels" like it.
@esjames so just to confirm are you saying that you're having issues with the automatic transition from 5G to 4G or vice versa? Cuz that would be a very big problem for me especially since I am 99% of my time on my home Wi-Fi and have been missing calls ever since doing the upgrade. Can you confirm that if I do do a global conversion will that result in error and if so do you happen to have a guide on how to convert from Android 11?
Thank you in advance.
It doesn't appear to have AOD? that's the one feature I wanted. Ugh
I went and got the iphone 12 pro yesterday, and yes "all day" aod isnt there and 4g-5g switching works only sometimes. Got tired of it dropping signal. Global firmware doesnt have stand alone 5g but at least it didnt drop signal.
Missing features aside (it seems several releases back from what I'm seeing in OnePlus' forums, where several devices are on 11.0.3.3 and 11.0.5 is in beta testing) how is it overall? Stability, battery life, Android Auto, etc?
Most says beta 5 is more stable than the stable release. The global release is pretty good. Battery life kinda sucks though
Are you guys having issues with YouTube and twitch mini screen hiding on the bottom of the screen and not appearing on recent apps?
I just updated. I hope I don't regret this

I like with the exemption of YouTube and maps mini floating screen disappearing
I'm not too thrilled with the update. Very laggy and buggy, wiped cashed data and it seems to have helped.... Slightly. Missing some text after a little while I'll get 3-4 all at the same time. I'm going to unlock and throw rhe international version on it very soon.
My first test of Android Auto in the truck was not great. At first everything seemed fine, but it got extremely slow after checking out 3 or 4 apps. I'll clear cache on related apps and see if that helps. The phone itself has been fine so far.
So first real test of Google navigation on AA today, and it wasn't good. When I searched for a place and selected directions, it showed three options, but the routes were not highlighted on the selection screen or while navigating, no matter how many times I closed the app and re-did the search. Finally I gave up and used Waze, which worked fine. I tried Google Maps again partway through, and that time it showed the route, but I cancelled it. When I got where I was going and unplugged the phone, it was very warm and there was a temperature warning - actually it said device temperature was back to the safe range. It's never done that before. Also the phone still had a persistent navigation notification shown that didn't want to go away. I am really disappointed right now. Normally I would also stream music while navigating, but didn't this time, and it still made the phone really warm on top of the other issues.
I don't care for the update either. Has crazy lag with screen transitions. Android Auto works fine for me. Freezes up when phone screen is left on. Turn off phone screen and android auto is responsive again. Did notice the missing navigation route issue once or twice. Forgot how I solved it but it's working now.
Otherwise just got the update yesterday. I will also say I think the maps issue is the actual maps app. Mine did it on android 10 not 11.
Also keyboard has round corners now?
Ever since I've updated there has been a problem with texting and I'm hoping someone might have an answer.
After I updated I noticed I could receive group text but my one on one text don't arrive (and I have timed it 15 20 minutes later.
I tried different texting apps (I use Textra) but nothing changed.
I did a factory reset and nothing changed
I called T Mobile and replaced sim card and after talking to technicians - nothing changed
I've changed settings and texting apps again - nothing changed.
Can anyone help?
I cannot get one on one text or app verification codes quick enough to install certain apps but I can still receive group maeesages quickly.
Am I the only one have trouble connecting in FlashMode? No matter what I've tried, debugging on, debugging off, the "Adb devices" command doesn't see a da** thing. I could've sworn I had connect to this phone with the android 10 version.
BTW, I had to laugh, 'cause it took me a minute to find the Flashmode option in the new Power menu. They sort of hid it.
Just wondering because I've been trying all afternoon. Probably just something stupid I'm doing but I gotta get this going so I can debloat thing. This rom is so loaded with bloatware, it's crazy. After I got finished paring down all the Sprint apps that were on my LG V50 it weighed about 5lb less and this one's is way worse.
February Patch for T-Mobile is out!! Hopefully with AOD and bug fixes.

nope. just february patch with bug fixes.
Still no AOD, pathetic. Who do we complain to - Tmobile or OnePlus?
Things have been better since I cleared the cache from the recovery menu. I don't remember the phone charging at only 1A in the car before. Seems to be the same whether I use Android Auto through the radio's USB port or my car charger. I guess the OnePlus 8 doesn't support Quickcharge?
