Potential lack of USB, HDMI and SD. Impact analysis...

Since Im hell bent on buying a galaxy tab at any cost ( just returned by G-slate..) Im trying to find excuses for potential lack of support for the following
SD
USB
HDMI
The reason for samsung to exclude all these may be due to the fact that they want to keep the tabs lighter and thinner which makes sense.
I for once cant stand the weight of xoom and also couldnt with g-slate. Not that I cant handle the weight but thought the tab has to be lightweight for mobility

Never removed my SD card in Vibrant. Not sure If I will need this
Samsung will have a USB connection kit which will allows SD card. The SD card adapter accessory seems ONLY for 8.9 which certainly means, 10.1 WIIL HAVE sd card slot.
SD card might slow down boot start due to scanning

Not much use

Will buy a dock which has HDMI port.

Still needs a USB adapter cable you need to carry. Samsung has a USB kit. This also allows SD card support.
So instead of carrying the adapter cable, I will just carry the usb kit. It looks nice and compact.

Will need to get additional car charger as i was able to charge my g-slate directly from USB port eventhough there
was a seperate charger port for G-slate...

USB and HDMI are not that big of a deal for me big SD card is I mean even my old Sony erricson I got free from att 6 years ago supported SD cards but my new 500 dollar investment can't absolutely unacceptable

GT 10.1 at any cost? I don't think any android tablet other than upcoming Toshiba has a built in full SD slot. A micro SD slot will be on the GT 10.1 3G version (according to current videos showing 3G sim slot and microSD slot).
So, would the 3G 16G version with micro SD be a better option that the WiFi only 32 GB version/no micro SD. As you do not swap SD cards I am thing that the wifi 32GB will meet your needs.
A micro SD slot would be nice to increase storage space and allow for easy update of pictures or movies. The 32 GB model should provide enough storage space.
HDIi would be nice, but I like the idea of the HDMI dock as the GT would be running off power or charging if dock used. The full SD/USB accessory also works for me. If I am on a trip, I can easily view or transfer my pictures from my camera.
FYI. I currently have a TF (microSD and HDMI) great screen, but I do not like the build. It's being returned. I have seen the Xoom and Iconia in store, the screen on these two tablets does not impress me, but I do like the builds on both these over the TF.

What aobut the USB host capability of 3.1

According to the Sammy website the 8.9 has an SD slot.

The sd adapter was for viewing photos from a camera.

Press release is dated March, 22nd 2011. Even the 10.1 had micro SD listed at that time.
The GT 8.9 does NOT have a micro SD slot. At CTIA they listed SD/USB adapter only for the the 8.9.
This "hands on" video video is a brief overview of the GT 8.9. No micro SD slot.

From what I have seen only the GT 10.1 3G version has a micro SD slot.
We will all have to wait until Samsung announce the GT 10.1 specs or they are leaked online when th egt 10.1 goes upi for pre-order..

I suspect 8.9 will come with exynos 1.2GHZ CPU. thats why its being delayed to summer....

noob uestion here. if you do hdmi out to a tv, wouldnt the sound still come from the tiny speakers on the tablet? if so, what is the point?

I'm still not convinced that they are leaving out the MicroSD slot... even on the WiFi Model. I tend to think the limited edition version was a stripped down cheap version just for devs.
While browsing the net, I found some pictures of the white backed retail version and spotted this. t3.com/images/variants/Samsung_GalaxyTabW12_610px_w500W.jpg
Now obviously, we don't know if that is a 3G version or not, but if they dumbed down the product as much as people are thinking, they shouldn't be shocked when nobody buys it.

HDMI = video and audio signal all together

Some ppl may need to view pics and videos on bigscreen TV and also for playing games now that we can use all sorts of USB controllers..
Not a deal breaker for me.

The white version is not the limited edition version. From previous videos I have seen of the GT 10,1 (pre-production) the slot on the image linked above is in the position of the 3G slot with no micro SD slot.
I agree it would be a shame for Samsung to not include an microSD slot as this is what would set it a part from the iPad with which Samsung is copying. They cannot say they are not copying iPad otherwise they would have gone with the version now known as the 10.1v .

I like the look of this pad !
however.. have a few concerns ..
1. are the speakers really that bad... can this be fixed. I have a BT speaker in my room would the volume still be as bad as headphones aparently are.
2. would the USB ports take a usb stick ? or a portable hard drive ?
3. would it be worth waiting for another model if I have till end of July to buy one ?

1. I have not had any problem with the speakers or using headphones, I have not used a bluetooth speaker so can't speak to that but I think the speaker problem is just on some devices
2. The USB ports on the dock will read USB sticks and USB hard drives, I have about 100 movies on a passport drive and watch them directly from the drive.
3. That is really up to you, there will always be something newer coming out, the Samsung Tab2 comes out this month but it has no external memory slot. You really need to decide what works for you and what will make you happy, for me the transformer has been perfect.

just what i wanted to hear, it is hard for me to tewst one in situ in store, so if the speaker problem is not universal then I may take the risk and order online without testing in store. Glad about the external HD as this makes me happier about only having the 16GB not 32 version.
Is memory allocated similar to my optimus 2x, that has a certain amount of internal memory then an internal SD card then external sd card. can you install programs onto external SD card ?

There is no mechanism to install apps to an external SD card, but that shouldn't be a problem since pretty much all the internal memory is available for application storage.

+1. I have had no speaker issues. I regularly use Bluetooth headphones and a Bluetooth speaker. They both work great.

Anyone with the keyboard dock, does 3.1 support USB Speakers ?

i went and tried it in two stores. the speakers were very low and poor on both machines. In one store with only a little background noise i couldn't hear it full volume !!!! this has really put me off. also both stores unsure if were going to stock the keyboard seperatley, they also would not let me pay for a bundle and collect keyboard at later date as the bundle (not avaible yet was in one box)

Seriously? I mean didn't we solve that with Froyo? That's a pretty nasty thing to do... I was planning on buying the 16GB version but if this is true I might have to fork the 100$ more for the 32GB version

You know, I was going to do the same thing. But since I couldn't find a 32GB in stock, I picked up a 16GB. I have about 100 or so apps currently taking up about 1 GB out of 13 GB free space and I can't see myself having 1300 apps installed to even get close to hitting the ceiling.

Are u seroiously gonna have 16 gb of apps! I highly doubt u will need all that.

If you get a USB OTG adapter and root the N10 then yes. That's just a normal USB flash drive, like any other.

I think you misunderstand. By "Micro" they mean it's really small. It's still got a standard size USB connector on the end, so you need a USB OTG cable to connect it to the microUSB port on the tablet.

That's great news, I was under the impression this app used to require rooting. No difference to me, I'd never touch an unrooted Android device, but great for those who don't like to "fiddle".

Just realised I've got the title totally wrong too 'MicroSD' > 'Micro USB'. :silly:

It is unfortunate that the marketing department of some storage manufacturers abuse the term "micro usb flash drive" for regular usb flash drives that are small.
I also hope they some day produce flash drives with native Micro-USB connectors, preferably extending needed enclosure to the sides of the connector, not in length like traditional (even small) flash drives. Even with the upcoming crowd funded MicroSD to Micro-USB adapter, it would always live in fear of accidently breaking it. I'd rather have some 16 or 32 GB Micro-USB stick that is half-moon-shaped and only a few tiny millimeters long, but could extend say 2 centimeters alongside the tablet.

It is unfortunate, what would be nice, is something that plugs all the way in, and then fits against the body of the device so it's snug and protected with no chance of breaking or getting knocked off, wrapping slightly around the contour. I'm pretty sure now I think about it, that this is what you meant by "half moon", perhaps "crescent moon" would be a better term?

Erm.. yes, I was struggling to find the right words to describe what I had in mind. Whatever has to be outside of the connector due to technical reasons should offer as little added profile with as few edges as possible.

Is this legal? Well, from Google's point of view anyway cause it's up to them to allow or take down such app. I'm not into rooting for warranty concerns, so how sure is that this app will be supported/left untouched? Major buying point unrooted external storage access for me.

As all the app does is mount the external storage and copying or streaming data from it, I can't see anything illegal there.

Rooting isn't illegal, nor are any apps that use it, the app isn't going anywhere, at worst you will lose warranty, but to be fair, it's a nexus device, you're kind of expected to root it.

It's easy enough to unroot, nobody need ever know you did it and technically voided it. Like I said, that's worst case.
As for the app, never used it personally so ill let someone else chime in.

I'm thinking about getting the Nexus 10, currently have an iPad 2 but the screen of googles tablet is just too tempting.
One of the things I want to use it for is viewing media, I'll be getting the 16gb version and I'm a little bit worried the storage will get filled up pretty quickly. I have about 75gb worth of dropbox storage but was wondering if there's anything I could use if there's no wifi?
I'm thinking of just a small flash drive to plug into the microUSB port with loads of films on it, basically like a usb drive but compatible with the nexus 10, is there anything out there that'll do that?

There are ways to make that happen but you will need to root your device. This can be done with the use of apps, or with a custom rom but definitely possible. gaming...I don't think you can yet. mainly because its early and 4.2 is still pretty new.

I have no problem rooting the device, was probably going to anyway. I just wanted to know what the best/smallest external storage options were?

Shame the reader only support sdhc so max 32gb cards for me, but can get a few!

Idea for possible solution to no SD card.

As we all know by now, the Note 5 does not come with an SD card slot. There are USB OTG adapters that will allow you to plug in a micro sd card reader and use the storage. My issue is they are bulky and cannot be kept on the device during daily use. My thought is, if the adapter is slim enough you may be able to plug into the micro usb slot and have the card wrap around the back of the phone behind a case. If anyone has seen something like this please let me know. Check out the link below to get a better idea of what i mean. The link is for a universal wireless charger that will link to your phone via micro usb. Instead of the cable linking to a qi charger, maybe it could link to a thin micro sd card reader. Please let me know what you think, maybe improve upon the idea.

Yeah I did this a few years ago when I switched to a phone with no mSD slot, moved all my pictures and videos and **** to cloud storage, now I pay $10 a month and have 1TB of storage space I can put anything I want on. I back up all my photos to the cloud and delete them from my phone once I get a decent number accumulated.
I also have been streaming my music, I dont listen to music a TON, but when I do I generally am only getting 30-60 minutes of listening in, that's not all that much data to stream so it doesn't effect my data usage all that much.
All in all, I felt fine on 32GB of internal storage with no mSD card, 64GB is a breeze.

I do actually have a wireless option that reads sd cards, my use case, i would like to the storage attached so pics and videos can be directly stored. I pre-ordered the 64gb, i didnt want to hold out lol. I found another item that is getting me closer but now i have to figure out a way to read the ribbon cable lol

That cable is pretty cool. I know you can't beat direct storage, that's why I had the 128gb iPhone But honestly, managing that much space via usb sync etc. is kind of a hassle. Maybe the cable adapter is good for batch offloading, but do you really need that much local storage, I think you'd get tired of the extra bulk and the potential hassles of "mounting" the external card, read/write limitations, etc. that go along with all of that.

I got this monster on the go cloud from Sam's club for 10 bucks a few months back, really good deal.

Yeah, that price drop popped up a week or two ago on slickdeals. If you can go up to SD Card, they're a bit cheaper/faster.

If they make this for the Note 5 like they did for the s6 and s6 edge it could solve the battery issue and the sd card problem

Good grief. The note 5 is big enough as it is. Last thing I would ever do is put a huge battery case on it.

There are always ideas. It's unfortunately that Samsung made that choice (Or maybe the Note Edge 2 supports it and they're trying to encourage people to go for the more expensive Note Edge 2? idk, Just a thought)

I'd use the battery /SD case in a minute! I have a note 2 with a 9300 mah zerolemon battery and I love my giant brick. That's why I don't care about design this, pretty that, glass this, feels good in hand that.
I just want my forever lasting brick phone! Whatever phone I get is getting either a zerolemon extended battery or a battery case.
Doesn't matter if the phone is pretty cause I'm never gonna see it!
I don't care because thinking about plugs and chargers something I never want to go back to!

I had been using this 64GB with my ex S6E - works very well. Is mini size and not bulky at all. It is auto detect by the phone and N5 users had reported it works well with it too

I Ihave an S6 and I purchased a micro OTG with 64B of storage - you can get larger ones I think - it connects to the USB and sticks out about a half inch - great for additional storage - I keep nandroids on it and connect it when I want to restore a previous nandroid - you can do a lot with it - not as good as an EXT SD card - but it works pretty well. and it is very small

Ya, my note 3 has 544GB of storage using a 512GB full size sd card. I used a smaller adapter than the amazon one mentioned above and fit it completely inside my zerolemon case with the extended battery. If you are looking at the back of the phone, it fits just to the right of the camera. No bulge or anything. It looks completely normal.

Pretty small - and works well. Best option I found - would love to find one smaller (it is about 3/4 to 1 inch long - and about 1/2 inch wide or so - just guessing about the size but I think it is pretty close to that.

Why not use a wireless external hard drive? Its almost like your own personnel cloud. 4TB for $200. Don't have to worry about monthly payments or being on a network/WiFi.
I'm thinking about getting one myself. Any thoughts/experience with these?

Ya, I use one in addition to the sd card on my phone. It's definitely not as fast as a micro sd card would be, but it's usable. I really notice it when browsing directories. If you have anything over say a 100 photos or movies in a folder it takes about 3-4 seconds to load which is kinda annoying. This is my experience with an N router and USB 3.0. I'm doing a SMB share.
