SD Card Won't Mount (CM7.2) - EVO Shift 4G General

Hi. I am running Cyanogenmod 7.2 stable on my Evo Shift.
A few days ago, out of nowhere my phone began displaying "SD card safe to remove, You can safely remove SD card." I removed the card, removed the battery, blew on the card old school NES style, but the issue remains whenever I reboot the phone. None of my apps that are on the sd card will work and I can't access anything on the card. Is there any way to fix this or at least recover the data off the card? I have not tried to access the card in a card reader on my PC yet.
Thanks in advance for any help regarding this issue.

Your SD card could be toast I've gone through a few of them running app 2 sd

could try reformating it on your computer

+1 on trying to reformat your SD Card. You ca try SD Card Formatter. Works quite well. I've attached it below.

Although formatting your sd card will erase all your data, it may be the only way to make it usable again

Turkbot, are you implying that App2SD is the cause of this? Should I avoid App2SD in the future? There's no way I could have all the apps I want on my phone without it or an alternative.
Everyone else, thanks for all the replies. I guess I will just reformat. Luckily I backed up fairly recently.

Well I tried to partition one of my 16 gig sd cards and it ****ed up in cwm and I had to throw it away but that doesn't happen very often
Edit: really? You can't cuss on here? What are we, like 12 years old now... That's lame

I've been running a2sd of some kind for the past couple of years on different devices. From xdandroid for the tp1 (does that count? Everything is run from sd) to the moment, to the optimuss, to my shift. If not running a2sd, then running link2sd. I have yet to kill an sdcard, using the same sd on half of these devices. Can it kill an sdcard quicker? Yes. Will it? For some I'm sure but not everyone. It def. Will wear it out faster but for the most part, it should last longer than the device in my experience.
However on my lg I did have an issue with corruption and had to run a script every so often (unintended battery pulls were the biggest reason). If you google a2sd for the optimus s on androidcentral, I have that script posted to fix sd errors. If I find it ill post. May help your situtation, may not lol.
e2fsck -yf /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 is the script I used. Our mmcblk0p2 is different however. Hopefully someone can chime in with the correct location.

I understand completely, one time I formated my sdcard and I never thought I would get it to mount again until I popped it in a card reader and put some stuff on it. Seems like blank sdcards don't like to mount sometimes.

"removed external sd card"

Ok, I have a Samsung Fascinate.
Rooted, CWM, ROM Manager, Root Explorer, Titanium Backup, SetCPU, ASTRO, JT 1000 voodoo kernel with animation.
Ok the problem is and I am almost certain that what caused it is flashing JT's 1000 kernel over top the original 0.2 JT voodoo kernel. However I had read in the forums that people have done this with no problem and I believe in the install thread it says you CAN do it with indeed no problems. However soon after doing the flash everything was working great and I took a couple pictures at dinner which is how I know it was working. Later last night I went to take another picture while out and it wouldn't let me because the SD card wasn't being detected.
I have a sd card reader but not with me and won't until I get home later tonight but I figured maybe until then I can get some help to how to fix it for when I do get home.
I have took a 8gb mini sd from my girlfriends HTC Eris and put it in just to see if it would read which it does perfectly fine. However you plug my 16gb back into the phone and it doesn't even recognize plugging it into the phone.
Any ideas?

If the card works in another device, then I would wonder if the problem could be voodoo specific, such as the 0 internal memory issue. As far as I know, the only fix for that is the complete voodoo removal process, and a wipe in both stock recovery and cwm.

I tried to put the card into my sd card reader on the computer and it wont read it...assuming its a bad card. When its in the phone the sd card reader slot heats up too a massive HOT temp really quick within second and doesn't do anything. I guess I am gonna unroot using another sd card and take the phone to verizon and be like wtf....
I un-rooted and am gonna take the phone to the verizon store.
I plugged a 1GB from my old phone into the sd card slot and re-flashed CWM to see if I just removed the kernel's if maybe that would fix the sd card but I am almost positive its the sd card that is fried somehow...But it put the phone back to stock except it was rooted...not sure how that happened but i guess everything was on the sd card that I had done???
So confused but basically I am just gonna goto the store get a new card when they realize mine is bad and then re-do everything...Just never flashing a kernel on top of another one again whether people say its safe or not!

I can assure you that had nothing to do with your card. Sometimes you get a bad lot. I order about one a month for various things, and have had to RMA here and there. I swapped the one my phone adopted with for an 8gb class 10 anyway, because the stock are class 2.

Lol. I mean to say the kernel flashing cannot cause the sd card to fail. The card was probably bad to begin with. A bogus card will simply fail, sometimes after functioning fine for awhile.

No. the install file for the kernel, but that installs it on the phone. Apps are stored on the internal memory, not the sd card. Pretty much, it just holds your music, pictures, application data in some instances (not the app itself), and any files you need to flash.

what if I can't even download launcher pro due to this problem of it not letting me download an app because it says I don't have enough internal memory available...
Whoa.
Now that problem is the internal memory issue, not the external sd card. That is voodoo related, and the post about completely removing voodoo addresses it. I ran into that once, and it took about soften minutes to fix following those instructions.

Wp7 and sdcards.....be careful!!!!!

Well its my own fault but I thought maybe I can save some others the heartbreak of a damaged sdcard. We all know that wp7 reformats the sdcard when installing the first time. Also if you switch sdcards while phone is off or anything and then boot into wp7 you will fry your card.
I flashed wp7 just to see what it was all about blah blah. Decided it was time to return to android. Blah blah i stuck my android sdcard with all my backups, pics, work stuff back into the phone and rebooted to flash android back through nand . Somehow i let it boot back to wp7 instead of nand and it killed my card. Lesson learned. Keep your sdcard 10ft. away from Wp7 at all times. Don't switch out your wp7 sdcard till you are actually back in android just to be safe. Oh and backup your sdcard!!!!!!!!

If for any reason your sd card becomes corrupt just use this program: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/HP-USB-Disk-Storage-Format-Tool.shtml
lol, hard lesson but it was obviously worth it as you wont be stupid enough to do something like that again, especially when it clearly states in read-me that card is partitioned etc.
Thank you for this post, I was not aware that something like this can happen, and now I'll take precautions so it wont happen to me.

Did you actually read the second paragraph????? Yes I read the read-me. That's how I knew to use a spare sdcard. Plus the read me states that the card will be reformatted upon first boot and if removed the phone will lose all userdata. Had nothing to do with stupidity. Has to do with a pregnant wife needing my attention and me letting go of the power button to soon. Stuff happens.
Now to be more helpful than negative......unlike the athiest with his stellar "I don't believe in God, but I sure think I am a God of android" bad attitude.
The sdcard wasn't reformatted. It was showing as being damaged. I was able to find a simple, free data recovery program that was able to recover most of the card.
I see this may happen often because after using wp7 you may be in a haste to flash back to android (wp7 is just sad IMO). Just wait till you are booted into android just to be safe. Also while fixing my mess up yesterday I stumbled on another problem.
Recently read a post about partitioning the sdcard for optimum use when ram builds came out. System -ext. for data and another for cache. I picked up this sdcard off the desk after finding my main card had been damaged. Then did a task 29, flashed magdlr, and Mdj's gingerbread. Inserted the sdcard and did first boot. To my surprise I had all of my apps pre loaded and I hadn't logged into Google yet so I knew it wasn't Google data backup that loaded my apps. So I went into root explorer and saw the ext. and then realized which sdcard I had slid in. There for a second I thought "WOW me and mdj have the exact same apps". Blah blah reformatted card and reflashed gingerbread. Done.

Myself, and a few others, have manged to reformat the SD card in a single button press by puttinf it into a digital camera and using the format option. It shows the card as 200mb but after the lighting quick format reads the correct size...voila.
Thanks...good to know. I will try it today. It took 8 hrs. for that application to fix my sdcard so that the computer could read it. Though my phone still wont read it. Out of 3700 pics I recovered 98% of them, all of my work files and android apps. Got real lucky. Took another hour after that for the computer to copy them to another 16gb card. Made for a long night. Now when I get home I can reformat the bad card and use as backup.

okay, i've tried using minitools partition to try and delete the 200mb partition and then recreate the entire 16gb that is my microsd as well as sdformatter with full (erase as well as overwrite) with size adjustment on but the problem is that i can only see one partition, the 200mb partition, i can't even see the the second partition or whatever that wp7 created. I even tried doing the low-level-format but it's still stuck at 200mb!

Just download and install SD Formatter 3 on your pc, run the program and in the options change FORMAT SIZE ADJUSTMENT to ON and leave it at QUICK FORMAT. Dont worry that it only shows the 200MB partition it will reformat your card and bring back its full size. It worked everytime for me.

i tried that through android usb storage mode but it would keep on going back to 200mb. the only way that using sdformatter proved to be successful was to connect the microsd through magldr and not through android
thanks for the tip though!
google samsung sd formatter. Format as FAT32 with overwrite enabled. It fixed my bad card when i returned to android
By the way, you have to mount the card via MAGLDR as it wont mount in android (it is detected in windows this way)

Problem with sd card

Over the past day or so I have been playing around with some of the gingerbread sense roms out. After flashing the last one, my sdcard comes up with the message that its mounted read only due to an unexpected problem. I have tried fixing permissions, even went and removed the gingerbread rom and restored a back up of royal glacier, which had no problem with my sdcard before. Any ideas as to what is going on? I'd hate to have to format my sdcard as there's a LOT of misceleanous backups on it from my phone. Any help in this will be greatly appreciated.
P.S. If it makes any kind of difference I am using the 8gb sdcard that came with the phone.

Have you tried mounting it via settings? Cm7 is having the same issues pretty much, if I go to settings storage and mount sd it fixes it till the next error. Lol it sux azz and I don't think anyone here can build a rom without using cm source. :/

I tried that to no avail. Even tried remounting through adb... As far as mounting through settings goes, it shows the card is mounted read only, and will not unmount or anything, if I press the unmount it leaves that screen and comes up preparing sd card, then the same error message... I don't know, guess I'll just have to pull my sd card contents and format. Will that effect my cwm or anything else I am using which made folders on my sd card?

HELP!!!!!
Okay. So I took the sdcard from my phone, and attempted to pull the files and folders from it. WHAT A SHOCKER! they're all set to read only. I had to take each file and folder seperately, go to properties, and uncheck read only from the attributes. But there's STILL a problem, Once I move them to my windows 7 64 bit pc, the are set to read only again. I take ownership of the folder and it's contents, and as soon as I click apply and close the properties, they're set back to read only. I have already formatted the sd card, and want to put these files back, but if they're read only wouldn't it mess up my phone's sd card again? What am I missing to get my sd card back to working condition? Anyone who can help with this issue would be a LIFE SAVER. I have a TON of info on this phone I don't want to lose. I Pray to the android GODS that my phone's sd card did not ruin all my info.

SD card in, phone won't boot

So yesterday I was trying to find a picture on my phone, but right before I clicked the gallery icon, the phone said "SD card suddenly disconnected" or something like that.
So I rebooted, which is what i usually do when I get a SD card error.
Now the phone won't boot with the SD card in. The computer shows the status bar on the top loading when I use a micro-sd adapter, but it will not respond and restart Explorer if I try to to right-click or access it.
I'd really like to get my pictures back at least.
I would try to put the sd card in another phone and try and see if it works. If it does, make a back up on your pc, then format your card. Then restore the back up.
Don't know if that would fix it but its worth a try.

Yes that works. But it also sometimes does not format the entire card . Such as in the case of an sd ext partitoned card.

Well if you can get the SD Card to show in another phone. Place the SD Card into the other phone, boot into recovery and format it from there.
It won't mount or anything in the other phone.
I let the chkdsk run for a while, it finally said it cannot read RAW files.

Well the card might actually be dead then. I would still try and see if you can format it some way. BUt from what your describing it might be done.
What rom were you using. I went throught 2 8gig card recently because of this in a really short span of time. I think it might have to do with the card getting partitioned in a way where part of the card isn't readily read anymore

SD Card constantly remounts as being "read-only"

It's has really been the pain in the arse. Really.
I use Lord's Ice Cold Sandwich. This happens occasionally, when I tried to download SD data for a game, the SD card remounts as being read-only.
I tried full-wipe flash, format SD card with Disk Utility of Ubuntu, then reflash it with Android's utility. I tried unmounting sdcard in CWM. I tried fix permission option in CWM. Nothing helps so far.
Thanks in advance!!!

I actually tried that. The other day I backed up stuff than formatted the thing with Disk Utility tool of Ubuntu. I then went extreme, formatted it again on Android.
I guess the app above might help. The thing is I'm still under 18 for a credit card, hence gotta wait another year to be eligible.... mannnnn
Apparently, the SD card is still in R/W mode, it isn't til I start download data for games, download music, use dolphin... that it becomes read only. The process usually goes for half the bar, than stop.

Are you able to flash your SD card? If you are having the same files after the formatting which you had then I don't think anything will work rather than replacing your SD card
