Problem with sd card - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Over the past day or so I have been playing around with some of the gingerbread sense roms out. After flashing the last one, my sdcard comes up with the message that its mounted read only due to an unexpected problem. I have tried fixing permissions, even went and removed the gingerbread rom and restored a back up of royal glacier, which had no problem with my sdcard before. Any ideas as to what is going on? I'd hate to have to format my sdcard as there's a LOT of misceleanous backups on it from my phone. Any help in this will be greatly appreciated.
P.S. If it makes any kind of difference I am using the 8gb sdcard that came with the phone.

Have you tried mounting it via settings? Cm7 is having the same issues pretty much, if I go to settings storage and mount sd it fixes it till the next error. Lol it sux azz and I don't think anyone here can build a rom without using cm source. :/
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App

I tried that to no avail. Even tried remounting through adb... As far as mounting through settings goes, it shows the card is mounted read only, and will not unmount or anything, if I press the unmount it leaves that screen and comes up preparing sd card, then the same error message... I don't know, guess I'll just have to pull my sd card contents and format. Will that effect my cwm or anything else I am using which made folders on my sd card?

HELP!!!!!
Okay. So I took the sdcard from my phone, and attempted to pull the files and folders from it. WHAT A SHOCKER! they're all set to read only. I had to take each file and folder seperately, go to properties, and uncheck read only from the attributes. But there's STILL a problem, Once I move them to my windows 7 64 bit pc, the are set to read only again. I take ownership of the folder and it's contents, and as soon as I click apply and close the properties, they're set back to read only. I have already formatted the sd card, and want to put these files back, but if they're read only wouldn't it mess up my phone's sd card again? What am I missing to get my sd card back to working condition? Anyone who can help with this issue would be a LIFE SAVER. I have a TON of info on this phone I don't want to lose. I Pray to the android GODS that my phone's sd card did not ruin all my info.

Try them, mine show read only as well on my 32 bit vista system. And they never change either.

Will do as soon as I return home and will report back with what happens, as for now I found out that what messed my sd card up in the first place was installing ginger sense with NO ext partition. Found a forum here witj a walkthrough to creating said partitions and have done so. As for my back ups and all other files, I will let you know what happens... Thanks for the help!
P.S. Am not having same problems as my saphire did that I mentioned in pm. I have no sdcard in right now, and am fully functioning...

So far the contents of my sdcard appear safe, help is very much appreciated... Now if I may ask, what rom are you running my friend? And also is there a sense gingerbread rom that is 100% functional?

SD card issue

So all of the sudden I get a notification that my memory card had a problem and that it's "read only".
It was totally fine then this. Is my card corrupted or is it a hardware thing?
I can get it to recognize it....then it goes right back to read only.
I've used the same card from my G2...to Nexus One...to Vibrant to my now MT4G.

try formatting it with a card reader...
Probably messed up. Mine did it too and only thing I could do was format.

I will tell you the truth. You will lose everything. After this you will learn to backup your sd card on your computer.
I wiped out mine too. Somehow, my card became corrupted and would not mount. I lost everything. Still pisses me off.
Good news is there is a stock 'ROM' here and you can just start over. I know it sucks, but think of it as a learning experience. What else can you do?

One question I had is: Is there a way after it wont mount to get it to mount? Like... can you go into terminal and mount it at all?
Hope this eases you mind man.

You can put in into another android phone and it will work just fine (most likely). Has happened to me multiple times in G2 (part of a reason it went back to t-mo).
Alternatively, you can try USB mount option in ClockworkMod recovery and see if phone will recognize your card in recovery, you can then copy everything over to PC and re-format the card.
Wait! Before you reformat, plug it into a Windows machine and run checkdisk on it. I just had this problem yesterday and this fixed it for me. I didnt lose my data or anything because it wasnt reformatted. Just check both the boxes on the dialog box when you run checkdisk and hopefully itll work for you too.
---
How to run Chkdsk from My Computer or from Windows Explorer
Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
Click Properties, and then click Tools.
Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
Select the Automatically fix file system errors check box.
Select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
I too have been experiencing this problem, and have tried almost everything to fix this crap! but no luck, I'm not sure what's causing this, but I've tried several SD cards already and even replaced my phone thinking it was the device card reader, but I still have the same problem... Hope someone can shed some light on this matter...
But to the OP before you go formatting it, you can try to save the files on your SD first by going to recovery > connect device > mounts and storage > mount USB storage. You should see your files from the SD card so you can back those up at least.
Good luck!
Had that happen to me when I popped in a new card. Put the old one back in, same thing happened.
Turned out that the restore didn't work correctly. Was able to restore the stock backup I made after rooting and haven't had issues since. I played around trying to get different kernels working, and had to restore a few times. The one time just didn't take fully.

Wp7 and sdcards.....be careful!!!!!

Well its my own fault but I thought maybe I can save some others the heartbreak of a damaged sdcard. We all know that wp7 reformats the sdcard when installing the first time. Also if you switch sdcards while phone is off or anything and then boot into wp7 you will fry your card.
I flashed wp7 just to see what it was all about blah blah. Decided it was time to return to android. Blah blah i stuck my android sdcard with all my backups, pics, work stuff back into the phone and rebooted to flash android back through nand . Somehow i let it boot back to wp7 instead of nand and it killed my card. Lesson learned. Keep your sdcard 10ft. away from Wp7 at all times. Don't switch out your wp7 sdcard till you are actually back in android just to be safe. Oh and backup your sdcard!!!!!!!!

If for any reason your sd card becomes corrupt just use this program: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/HP-USB-Disk-Storage-Format-Tool.shtml
lol, hard lesson but it was obviously worth it as you wont be stupid enough to do something like that again, especially when it clearly states in read-me that card is partitioned etc.
Thank you for this post, I was not aware that something like this can happen, and now I'll take precautions so it wont happen to me.

Did you actually read the second paragraph????? Yes I read the read-me. That's how I knew to use a spare sdcard. Plus the read me states that the card will be reformatted upon first boot and if removed the phone will lose all userdata. Had nothing to do with stupidity. Has to do with a pregnant wife needing my attention and me letting go of the power button to soon. Stuff happens.
Now to be more helpful than negative......unlike the athiest with his stellar "I don't believe in God, but I sure think I am a God of android" bad attitude.
The sdcard wasn't reformatted. It was showing as being damaged. I was able to find a simple, free data recovery program that was able to recover most of the card.
I see this may happen often because after using wp7 you may be in a haste to flash back to android (wp7 is just sad IMO). Just wait till you are booted into android just to be safe. Also while fixing my mess up yesterday I stumbled on another problem.
Recently read a post about partitioning the sdcard for optimum use when ram builds came out. System -ext. for data and another for cache. I picked up this sdcard off the desk after finding my main card had been damaged. Then did a task 29, flashed magdlr, and Mdj's gingerbread. Inserted the sdcard and did first boot. To my surprise I had all of my apps pre loaded and I hadn't logged into Google yet so I knew it wasn't Google data backup that loaded my apps. So I went into root explorer and saw the ext. and then realized which sdcard I had slid in. There for a second I thought "WOW me and mdj have the exact same apps". Blah blah reformatted card and reflashed gingerbread. Done.

Myself, and a few others, have manged to reformat the SD card in a single button press by puttinf it into a digital camera and using the format option. It shows the card as 200mb but after the lighting quick format reads the correct size...voila.
Thanks...good to know. I will try it today. It took 8 hrs. for that application to fix my sdcard so that the computer could read it. Though my phone still wont read it. Out of 3700 pics I recovered 98% of them, all of my work files and android apps. Got real lucky. Took another hour after that for the computer to copy them to another 16gb card. Made for a long night. Now when I get home I can reformat the bad card and use as backup.

Do you have any suggestions for a good data recovery application. The one I used was free and easy to use but cost me about 4 he's of sleep. I know a lot of ppl experience sdcard corruption frequently maybe we can get it into a sticky that ppl will find before they reformat. I did not know till last night that it was possible to recover drives this way. I almost erased all of my families Christmas pics. PREGNANT wives don't like that kind of news. okay, i've tried using minitools partition to try and delete the 200mb partition and then recreate the entire 16gb that is my microsd as well as sdformatter with full (erase as well as overwrite) with size adjustment on but the problem is that i can only see one partition, the 200mb partition, i can't even see the the second partition or whatever that wp7 created. I even tried doing the low-level-format but it's still stuck at 200mb!
anyone have any other solutions?

Just download and install SD Formatter 3 on your pc, run the program and in the options change FORMAT SIZE ADJUSTMENT to ON and leave it at QUICK FORMAT. Dont worry that it only shows the 200MB partition it will reformat your card and bring back its full size. It worked everytime for me.
Mark.
i tried that through android usb storage mode but it would keep on going back to 200mb. the only way that using sdformatter proved to be successful was to connect the microsd through magldr and not through android
thanks for the tip though!
google samsung sd formatter. Format as FAT32 with overwrite enabled. It fixed my bad card when i returned to android
By the way, you have to mount the card via MAGLDR as it wont mount in android (it is detected in windows this way)

have you bought the sd card from ebay? it might be fake. It happened to me too, bought a 32gb microsd, for about 20 euro, knew it was fake, but i just tried my luck. When the package arrived it got myself some brand new earrings, probably worth 2 bucks.

Sd card won't mount via phone or pc. Help?

So this morning I was deleteing files off my sd card from my phone. Then tried to mount it through my computer to put some files on. Wouldn't mount on the pc via the phone.
Disconnected it and it no longer was mounted on my phone.
Took out the card and used a card reader and it no longer was able to be read on my pc without the phone.
Anyone have any ideas to get my sd card back and working. Currently I had to resort to using a 2gb card that I could fill within seconds.

Mine did this yesterday after flashing a ROM. Lost everything. I was able to see things using CWM but not the phone itself or the PC. Formatted it with CWM and it wiped everything but still the phone or computer wouldnt read it. I waited a couple hours and loaded it back into my computer and just left it. A couple minutes later Windows popped up a box asking if I wanted to format it. I did a quick format and it read the card size. Previously it errored out saying it could not format it. I dont know what happened and why it all of a sudden worked

[Q] How to fix my problem...

Hi, I'm having problem to flash my HTC HD2 back to android after flashing my HD2 to Windows Phone. The error that I'm having right now is to unable to mount SD Card. Everytime i've tried to mount /SDcard, an error Unable to mount /sdcard occured.
I've tried so many options but still no avail. Tried to use adb shell command but still unable to mount. So, I've tried to run android using SD Card, my phone stuck at port-a-droid screen and keep rebooting. At first, I though it was the SD card but when I tried on my friends HD2, the SD Android can boot and no problem.
I can't think what is the main problem as when I've load back to WP7, my sdcard can be detected and use as a storage and even in Magldr.
Hope someone could shed some light to my problem as i really love this phone.

Ok, follow these steps and you should be fine:
1. Flash task29 by placing task29.nbh onto root of SD card and holding volume down and power button while phone is OFF
2. Flash magldr or CLk
3. Flash recovery
I highly recommend HD2 Toolkit for this if you are not experienced. just google HD2 Toolkit and you will see the xda thread
Goodluck!

Hi again.
I've tried the step that you suggested using the toolkit but still the same problem.
I'm still unable to boot android from the SD as it keeps reboot after showing the port to droid ultimate screen.
Try to install rom via sdcard still giving me the same can't mount error.
Any other suggestion?
I quit confuse on what reason this is happening as when installing WP7, sdcard can be detected. But when I've flash to Stock Desire HD using DFT (as is the only method that I cn use to install android) my sdcard can be detected by the android os.
It's kinda weird actually...

But yes try what nigeldg suggested, also, make sure your setup (SD card folders, startup.txt etc) is correct as well, thats honestly where it seems like its failing. But without the device its hard to try myself

Hi, thanks for your reply.
Actually I did want to reinstall android from WP7 however when i enter recovery mode and choose install from the zip file, I get can't mount sdcard.
I've been trying a lot of things, format using sd formatter, format to FAT32, swap with another sdcard and even purchase new sdcard also gave me the same error. Even trying to fix using adb also fail or maybe I'm not expert enough to fix using adb. Found a topic in the forum by modifying initrd.rc (if i'm not mistaken) my knowledge is still shallow, so I dare not to try such attempt yet.
Do you think using Clk would solve my problem rather using Magldr? Maybe I should give it a try.
As for the boot android from sd is an effort for me to run android as a temporary solution while trying to figure out NAND installation problem but that method also fail.
I've already format my card using FAT32 (but will try to reformat again later), but copy all the android file into the folder and try to reboot from sdcard. Only got to loading screen of port-a-droid ultimate and then my phone reboot. But when I insert the same sdcard into my friends HD2, it boot into the android without a problem as I'm facing right now.
So I don't know what's the different between his HD2 and mine.
Hopefully someone could help me.

After reading this, and thinking about it for awhile, to eliminate ALL software issues, i would flash stock TMOUS or your carrier's stock Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM and try the sd card there. It almost sounds like youre having a hardware issue. Or wait a minute, what programs did you use to format your SD card? there might be a partition still on it that recovery isnt liking, download mIni tool partition wizard and delete all partitions then create a fat32 partition set as primary. Or use HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool that takes forever but it does an excelent job at erasing completely the contents (master boot records, paritions, data, everything) and restores it to a fresh state. every time i get any sort of external media i use this tool to completely wipe it clean. if problems still persist we may need to move to a google talk chat session or something so i can talk to you as you move through some steps.

Good question lol i have the stock TMOUS ROM, and a custom ROM. The only problem with those is the radio will most likely brick the device.
What carrier do you have? im pretty good at tracking down files on the net. I would start with the carriers website, then go to HTC's website. its 100% out there, just gotta get the blood hounds out and sniff it down i found a 12 year old program (simple .exe file) that would compare two folder directories and output there results to a text file so its definately out there
And i say it might be a hardware issue since you claimed it booted on your friends HD2, thus ruling out a bad SD card, or bad software setup. These devices arent that hard to pull apart, ive had mine a apart more times than i change my underwear xP
So if it is hardware related, prolly a pin thats not connecting 100% (Hopefully) you can easily rip it apart and bend the pin to make contact.
Well the best to ya if you need help finding the stock ROM just post your specs of the carrier and what not and i'll try to help ya. Also if you need anything else you know wher to find me

Thanks again. I will try to find stock rom first. If not, I will post again.
Btw, is it possible for me to pull out (or create an image) of the stock ROM as my brother had a friend that ask me to convert his HD2 to Android. But just to be save, I want to extract the original stock rom first just in case and at the same time i could use it to restore my HD2.
Do you think it is caused by the hware. Because if it is, would it also effecting WP7 rom also. A bit weird as WP7 could access my sdcard without an issue. I don't know as i'm no expert in mobile device.
If my device is bricked either because of the radio or others, is it possible to un-brick it.
Anyway, thanks. Will be posting again soon.
If still couldn't solve, then i will just stick to WP7 and sold the unit instead.

I forgot to ask. If my device came from WM6.5, should I flash the radio first or HSPL?

Here are the stock ROMs for the UK, so the ones for your carrier are probably on the HTC website somewhere Try searching through your country's branch of the htc website (i.e. rather than htc.com/uk try your country's code) and you will most probably find the ROM you're looking for. If you're flashing from WinMo you flash HSPL>Radio>MAGLDR/cLK>CWM>ROM (in response to your second post)

I'm reasonably sure you can, as that says it's just a generic software update. Try it out and see if it helps your SD issue and report back

SD Card constantly remounts as being "read-only"

It's has really been the pain in the arse. Really.
I use Lord's Ice Cold Sandwich. This happens occasionally, when I tried to download SD data for a game, the SD card remounts as being read-only.
I tried full-wipe flash, format SD card with Disk Utility of Ubuntu, then reflash it with Android's utility. I tried unmounting sdcard in CWM. I tried fix permission option in CWM. Nothing helps so far.
Thanks in advance!!!
There's an app on the Play Shop which claims to fix this, give it a try

I guess the problem lies in permission thingy. Flash this zip file in here works: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458021
Gud luck!
i think your card is getting faulty ......
back up all data and then go for any experiments ....

I actually tried that. The other day I backed up stuff than formatted the thing with Disk Utility tool of Ubuntu. I then went extreme, formatted it again on Android.
I guess the app above might help. The thing is I'm still under 18 for a credit card, hence gotta wait another year to be eligible.... mannnnn
Apparently, the SD card is still in R/W mode, it isn't til I start download data for games, download music, use dolphin... that it becomes read only. The process usually goes for half the bar, than stop.

Should I repartition the SD card with swap storage and ext4 and stuff?
Sent from my Desire HD using xda premium
Just format the card with 4ext then reflash rom.

Are you able to flash your SD card? If you are having the same files after the formatting which you had then I don't think anything will work rather than replacing your SD card
