Using GPS without CDMA signal

Hello:
I try use the GPS of Sprint Hero in Argentina (there are no operators that use CDMA)
and I can not find the satellite signals, what I can do?
Thanks in advance
Gps will not work without a network location first. You may be able to connect to a wifi and it work, maybe.

Try to use the GPS while connected to wi fi and have not had luck. There fix something?

Are you using a custom ROM, or just stock 2.1?
Probably nothing you can do. The gps hardware is not powerful enough to work without a network location.

my thoughts are...
GPS works.. but without data it has no reference.
Maps must be downloaded via some internet connection. Maybe a wifi can help u.
or
you can download a stand alone GPS map app. CoPilot is a good one, but cost $30.
Yeah, but the gps can't even find a lock without a recent network signal to tell it where to start looking. It's not a full on gps antenna.

I have been traveling around the world recently with my EVO and using the GPS to do so. It's GPS chip is no better than the Hero's I believe.
Things to keep in mind, without aGPS help, it can take these things up to 30 minutes to find your correct location. Usually it takes 4 strong signals to pinpoint it. Download GPS Status from the market and it will show you all of the satellites it is picking up as well as the strengths and you will know when you have a lock. It will also allow you to keep the phone awake and the gps active until it gets a fix. This is probably your main problem. If the phone is not actively using the gps, it turns off the chip and never gets a chance to get a fix.
You need to run GPS status preferably when you are connected to a wifi signal and outside with a clear shot of the sky. It can take anywhere from 10 seconds to 30 minutes depending on if you are on a wifi connection, how far away you are from the last known lock stored in the chip (GPS Status will display this for you) and also how far from the equator you are, etc. If you are very far south in argentina it can be a LOT more difficult GPS to work... I noticed my GPS had waaay more trouble up in sweden than it did down in central europe.
Also, Download mapdroyd and get the maps for the area you are in. It works pretty well for a free locally stored map app. GPS Status also allows you to add pins/labels to gps coordinates and then do a radar type guidance back to them. Between these two tools and now knowing how to connect your phone, you should never get lost again, providing your battery does not die. Luckily I brought 4 extra batteries with me!

Desire hd - no gps at all

Hello. I have had the phone since xmas, I don't know if it came with Android 2.1 or 2.2, anyway I am now with the latest update, default Rom with adw launcher ex for the home screens. recently I needed the gps, it's been weeks now, and I could nevEr use it. I got the signal only once and it took such a long time and it found only 3 satellites. At least I know the gps hardware receiver works.
I have already used status gps, agps function with WiFi and 3g, mysatellites, gps test. Didn't try a hard reset, since I know there can be an easier and more comfortable solution.
Which one is it?

The phone has been bought in Switzerland...forgot to say.

GPS is of very low quality on android phones and it really depends on AGPS service. IPhone has the best GPS of them all connects in 7 seconds without AGPS
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
Desire HD has a gps chip/sensor built in and can find a GPS signal on its own without network signal but it take a while. Try using an app such as GPS Test. A-GPS will provide faster signal because it will use network triangulation.
If the GPS is so bad as you say, why does GPS Test find the sattelites in about 5 seconds and locks on in about 10 seconds? (with 3g/ wifi off)
The lock on time has a lot do do with the radio firmware. Which one are you using?

@niks_5in you are wrong and your answer was incorrect. What should you say then if I say that with my touch HD and windows mobile I had a gps fix in 3 seconds? we don't need a winner in this thread, we just need to solve the GPS problem I have.
@karthics4 I did write that I already used gps test, status gps, mysatellites....fix doesn't happen. I can find maybe 3 satellites after half an hour, the next day is the same story. Even with AGPS, refreshing position and everything...I also have a 3G connection when I am outside...i can find my position with AGPS but of course it is not as precise as the normal GPS position....it just cannot get the fix on the satellites. even if I download the latest AGPS data before searching the satellites.
@Flussen I don't know which radio. How do I check that? I have read about people having no problems with GPS on desire hd...and then after some updates of android system they started losing signal or even never getting a fix on the signal....i cannot say it is what happened to me. I should maybe hard reset and see if before the updates the gps worked fine. But I really don't want to hard reset since I have many applications, and games with saved datas...
Isn't this GPS problem with desire hd a common problem? I thought many people had those issues with the gps...

Is your phone rooted? Because if it is, then the easiest way if all else fail is to flash a new Radio version.
I occasionally have issues with the gps which are solved by the gps status app, with the newer radio and roms haven't had an issue for a while now. Fixes in around 5 seconds

do u use any casing for ur DHD.. I've had hard time on gps locking when using silicon case..
I am not using any Rom I have not rooted my device. But as far as GPS goes my old Nokia n82 locks faster than DHD. DHD will lock in 5 to 15 seconds using AGPS. Without AGPS forget the GPS. It will take ages

I can get a lock using HTC Locations in around the same time with just GPS and quite accurate to boot.
I can say the GPS/AGPS of the DHD is better than the E71, at least.
Fix
I am not sure if you found a solution or not but i just managed to fix my own gps that has been broken for almost a year. Here's how I did it:
Remove the cover for the LED-light. The GPS-antennae hides behind it. Check the connectors for dirt and the circuits to make sure they are whole. Mine wasn't. I managed to solder them back to shape and can now get a lock in a few seconds, even while indoors.

GPS not working on my Nexus S

I have bought SNS 9023 but GPS does not work can anybody help me.
take it back and get another one.

I've got the same problem.
If you are inside a building the GPS might not work!
Try flashing a custom rom, that did the trick for me. Now it takes a few seconds to lock onto satelites, or flash a new radio.
use wireless networks to help you lock position, settings > location & security
I have the problem too. Indoors it does Jack ****. Outside its fine. My xoom however does both, instantly.

Download and install the app GpsRestore from the market. It instantly fixed my issue. Make sure it's from Samsung.

After installing Gingerbread 2.3.5 | CyanogenMod 7 | SwiftDroid (v2.0 RC4)| Mur4ik rom, the GPS doesn't work... only some times works perfectly, and some times I need to restart the mobile several times.
Anyone has the same problem?
I tried with this solution:

Any idea?

The GPS for the LG GT540 is only supported for UK and US. As I live in New Zealand, it doesn't work for me unless I use the mod.
If you do live in those regions, see if it is receiving enough signal for it to make an assumption of the location. Wi-fi or cellular data makes the location more accurate.

It works for me, I live in Indonesia. I have compare the coordinate result between GT540 gps and field gps which was Garmin GPSMap and the result is quite good. In the format of Degree-Minute-Seconds, they're only slight different in 'seconds unit'.

I'm not talking about Google Maps, after install RC4 version the GPS doesn't work well. Only some times, in other forums I read that is for the CM7 version, I tried a lot of fixes, but some programs like runtastic or Google Maps don't work properly.

So does the installation of RC4 reduce the accuracy or does it fully disable your access to GPS?

After a long time (1 day) with the mobile switched on the GPS doesn't work, with any app, google maps, gps status or runtastic, I wait for the GPS fix status but the GPS system doesn't detect any satellite. Only few times works properly.
When it doesn't work I need to make a long batch to make it work, switch GPS off, run "fasterboot", run "GPS fix", switch GPS on, reboot and try it again... after this process some times works, and some times not... so I need to repeat the process until it works and it's a desperate situation.
Any idea?

Do you have data assisted location on? Go to --> Settings --> Location and security and then check if 'Use wireless networks' is only on. GPS will work with that on but will be less accurate that the use of an actual GPS connection. Also try it with both 'Use wireless networks' and 'Use GPS satellites' (if not already) and then try it with only 'Use GPS satellites' (to see if it actually determines location from satellites.
My GPS module seems to be also [email protected]#d up :/

I know what are you talking about... but the problem is when i'm running with runtastic software or walking with navigation the accuracy is horrible! I need that the GPS works properly, is one thing really necessary for my hobbies and job.
It doesn't work from the SwiftDroid with CM7. I read in other forums that the problem comes with CM7, but the fixes only works well with another brands of mobile phones. I'm thinking about to change to the [AOSP][v4.1] Android 2.3.5 or downgrade the Mur4ik version...

I'm using the latest build of Swiftdroid and the accuracy is very good. The cause of this could be the location of the GPS and/or the current configuration.

I use it sometimes of the road or while walking. I use it about once a week, but the frequency can fluctuate. I use MapDroyd. It's free on the Android Market and you can use it offline with a downloadable map.
I haven't had any real problems with the GPS and 2.3.5 although it seems to get a bit jittery occasionally (sometimes jumping up to 3 miles away from the current location) and every now and the GPS seems to shut down and restart.
I use Sygic GPS Navigation but it also happens with Google Maps as well.
Do you have or had 'Use wireless network' on. It happens to mine too. It seems like the location of which it used a data connection on is first used and then the actual location by a GPS.

[Q] Unable to get GPS fix

Hey guys, I moved from a HTC hero to an Atrix about 4 months back and i have not been able to get even a single GPS lock. The GPS icon blinks when i start up a navigation application but it remains in the "waiting for signal" state.
I tried using the GPS Status app. It shows satellites that are available but it doesnt get locked to any. BTW, i am running an unrooted official 2.3.4 gingerbread on my phone.
Thanks in advance guys
Use FasterFix from the Market (free) and apply appropriate setting. Additionally you can try resseting aGPS data with GPS Status, also free from the Market.
Enjoy!

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried resetting the aGPS data in GPS status but that didnt do the trick. Apparently, the FasterFix app requires root access while mine is unrooted. Is there any other possible work around? Could it be a hardware issue?
Not necessarily hardware. I get that on mine sometimes and I think it may be a wipe issue. Not positive though

I had to swap my device a few months back and the replacement had this same problem. I ended up having that one replaced too. So I've now had 3 atrix phones and only one had this issue. Was definitely a hardware problem for me.
