New PRL 60690 7-15-12 - EVO 4G General

As of last night i've had the new PRL with no significant difference on my dl speeds. I can actually say its gotten kind of worse. My speed test ranged from 100-400kb from 11pm-12am and I used to get up to 500kb around the same time before. Wonder if the dl speeds have gotten better for other people in the Houston area.

PRL Rollback initiated by Sprint

Here's something weird....not sure if any of you have experienced this but....
I had downloaded PRL 60672 last week or so and it was working fine. The other day I receive a text from Sprint saying that there is an Important Roaming List update and to do a manual Update. Thinking that a new one came out, I did it and it put me back to 60671. Not sure why that happened. Its not really affecting me much, but just wondering if that happened to anyone else.
I haven't gotten that message.

from the responses so far....it sounds like maybe you should be wearing a football helmet
Earlier this week I was doing updates on my phone and the PRL would not get higher than 60671 (which is what I am still at), and this was back on Sunday or Monday.
Im thinking for whatever reason, they dont want that 72 out yet
not here and why is this here in the dev section ?
I live in kind a kind of crappy area for Sprint service, and after I flashed to Fresh 3.3 last week I also update radio and wimax (of course) and manually check for a PRL update too (I only update when I want to, and have the time to update everything, and fix it if I become stoopid, but so far XDA has saved my from myself)
Anyways I went from 60669 to 60671, is there a 60670 I missed out on? With my old Sprint phones (Treo650&Centro) I would usually jump PRL revision numbers. It's gotta be a Sprint thing.

Unless you guys live in an area where Sprint coverage sucks and you are roaming all the time, this is not a significant update that you need to worry about. PRL (preferred roaming list) updates local towers from another carrier (most likely Verizon) and tells the phone if certain towers have been added/removed or what not.
Perhaps the 60672 PRL had bad information that was causing people not to roam correctly and Sprint pulled it. I have a feeling another PRL update will be available sooner than later.

Sprint prl still erroring?

I've scavenged xda and google, tried the few method's of fixing prl update error's, including the custom activity shortcut one. I still receive "Unknown Error."
Anyone else in this same boat? I'd perfer to NOT manually update it. =(
oh and i'm still on prl 60676

oh and it seems I get both internal and unknown error's.
I was just about to start a thread about this. I even went back to di18 let it do the ota update and I'm still getting the error. It's really starting to piss me off.

I've had the PRL and profile update error since it first started 3+ months ago? I've tried everything on the forums to fix it, flashed every stock ROM release etc but nothing fixed it.
I'm leaving for a cross country trip next week and wanted to make sure I had current PRL while going cross country. I ended up putting stock EC05 back on it and took it in to Sprint and they tried several things to fix it but couldn't. Because i was leaving so soon they swapped me out for a brand new unit instead of making me wait a week for a refurbished unit. Cost $35 for the swap and has fixed my PRL/Profile issues as well as my sensor issues so I'm pretty happy.

call sprint tell them you have crappy coverage in your house they will send you a Airrave for free did wonders for me.
I had this issue occur about a week ago. I noticed it after I Flashed EF02 and upgraded my radio to EF10, then downgraded to EF02 and I couldn't upgrade again.
- Then I started getting the PRL and profile error. I called sprint support and they tried to rebuild my network profile but it still didn't work.
They told me to take it in to a sprint store to have a tech look at it. The tech said the reason it errors out it because there are network issues here locally and the towers are down. He also said that i will get that error when there isn't a PRL to update to.
I know both of those are bull**** because I have updated my PRL many times and it doesn't give an error when there is no update.
How to downgrade PRL?
I manually (using Settings>About Phone>System Update) updated the PRL from 60676 (whatever it was earlier) to 01120. I am having a lot of issues with 3G connection now. I haven't come across a way to downgrade my PRL back to the previous one, or manually flash the previous PRL. Does someone know how to do that? Googling this issue did not lead to any ehlpfl threads. Thanks.

My wife's phone has done the same thing since it was new, won't update the prl or profile after all the stuff happening to my Epic and being on the 4th one I wonder about the Epic. I think Sprint tells everyone they have towers down in their area. I called them Saturday because my epic got stuck in roam and I had no data connection and the first idiot I talked to told me that. After the wife got home with her epic and it wasn't roaming I called back and the second person said they had no idea why they told me that, anyway long story short the repair center I had to go to said the same thing, which is total BS. Maybe thats their standard answer to not knowing or admitting they have no clue.

Sprint, Me, or My Phone...?

I've searched numerous forums/posts/threads for help, and I now come tail between legs, waiving the white flag! I give up! I need help!
I've noticed my download speeds have slowed dramatically over the past few weeks. What once was (4g) 4-5 down & 1-1.5 up, is now 1-1.5 down & 1 up. Real world experience has drawn me to these figures, but I've also confirmed similar speeds with speedtest. (Yes, I know speedtest isn't 100% accurate) I've tested speeds over several days, using the same tower. Each time, I was approximately 200 yards away, outside with a direct view of the tower, with full signal strength. Testing was done between 1 & 3 am. I used speedtest and downloaded the same pdf from my email to compile my unofficial info. Out of curiosity, I did the same tests on 3g and found almost identical results (slightly slower up speeds).
In my pursuit to find an answer, I've tried many things. I updated my PRL (01120). I found a post that showed how to increase 4g signal strength (-110) and increase refresh rate. I've called Sprint and had them check the tower (nothing was wrong per the CS rep). I've rebooted. I've toggled airplane mode. I've odin'd older and newer modems. So far, nothing has worked.
In one of the posts I read, I found a list of Sprint/Samsung's "#" codes. These allow you to view/change various things in your phone. I dialed ##786# and found my baseband ending in EE03 (Correlates with current modem). My wimax was EC04. I then dialed *#1234# and it showed samsung's firmware. My PDA ended in EB13 and my phone s: was EE03.
My frustrations were only exacerbated when my buddy on T-mobile stood next to me and pulled constant 10+ speeds!
I've read numerous posts from people in other markets pulling speeds from 7-12... I'd settle for my 4-5 again! Side note: this is a valley wide (Las Vegas) problem for me... I chose to focus testing on 1 particular tower that had given me good speeds in the past.
So...
1: Am I effin crazy? Should I be happy to have crappy 4g because many have none?
2: Could it be a combination of rom/modem/kernel that is causing my issues?
3: Could the discrepancies between the build modes (or what appears to be) I got from the "#" codes be an issue?
4: Is sprint BS'n me? Could they actually have 4g issues and that be the cause?
5: Is there anything else I can do/try to improve my signal?
I know slow speeds aren't the end of the world, but I have a job that allows me to play on my phone quite a bit. I always use wifi at home, but would love to be able to use 4g @ work again.
Thanks in advance for any help! I know it was a long read! I just want my epic back... I can't fathom going back to my POS hero! Lol!

You are not alone in this. I do not have an explanation but there have been several threads here and over at android central of people on Sprint complaining of slow speeds and whatnot. Some people believe that a bunch of roaming agreements Sprint had with some other carriers have dropped off over the past few months and many people that once had great service are now getting crappy service. Since you specifically are complaining of 4G speeds this may not be the case for you, but you certainly are not alone when it comes to people all over the country recently complaining of slower speeds overall.
Mine just went back to normal levels late yesterday, otherwise I can also vouch for about 1.5 dl/ul speeds all weekend.

try installing a different modem from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123103 try ef02 first
My speed has been **** lately also. Even pandora has begun skipping. If this doesn't improve, I will not be renewing my contract when my phone upgrade is available.

This seems to be on the right track to me. Do you know anyone else who has an Epic (or any other 4g phone for that matter) preferably running stock? See if they come up with similar speeds at the same place at the same time.
Barring that, I would try to put your phone back to bone stock Froyo and see what you get. Not sure how fluent you are with this, but just boot into CWM and backup. Then use Odin to get to stock Froyo. Don't install any apps, or do anything else to it. Test it out on 4G for a while in the same time and place. If that does not work, try some of the 4G fixes listed in these forums.
If you get decent 4G speeds with this configuration, you know it is something specific to your phone (and more specifically to your software) and you can restore the backup and try replacing just the modem or other tweaks. If you cant get decent speeds running stock, then just restore your backup and curse Sprint and wait

Personally I have had such fluctuation that I think Sprint is holding out. I'm sure that they have the capability of limiting data connectivity and speeds and I have heard rumors of them doing this in the past. I wouldnt put anything past Sprint at this point. Maybe give them a call and ask then why you are paying a "premium data" charges with the data speeds are no better than with the Hero. I had some better expierences with my old Moment before I changed to the Epic.

I dont think "official" is the answer. I just got my dad a brand new Epic and it's completely stock and it's slower than mine and I'm on EF02/EF10 GB. I may do a side by side video of the two phones and see just how much of a difference there is.

None of my family/friends have 4g on sprint... kids are rocking some POS sammy sliders I got for free, and the woman has a BB Curve. Maybe I'll stop into the local store and see if I can mess with the demo phones.

After you update your modem go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925898 and update your 4g and 3g connection times. Worked for me.
So here's an update...
First... thanks for all the help/suggestions!
I had already increased my signal strength and refresh rates to no avail. I tried several different modems out and all had the same results. Averaging about 1.5 up and 1 down. Given these findings, I figured it prob wasn't me or my phone. I called CS again, and this time the rep confirmed that the tower in my area was the problem. I asked if it could be a city wide issue and she couldn't confirm this. Being a paramedic, I know most of our zip codes, and they all have issues!
So... final conclusion is: 4g in Vegas sucks right now! Boo!

I'm in philly suburbs and my data dropped a little over a month ago as well. I was getting 1.5 d, 0.3-0.5 up in 3g and 7-8 d, 3 up in 4g. But recently, I have only been getting 0.5-0.8 d in 3g and 3-4 d in 4g. It's some straight up BS
cell phone slots... Good Luck to u guys in the west.

PRL 60683

Looks like we have an update. So far so good in my area. Went from 500kbps down to 1110.
I'm getting 1275kbps down 516kbps up, thats a hell of a lot better than what I was getting a couple of weeks ago.
Sure thing! Confirmed, no speed results here as I don't really pay attention, Sprint is usually slow in my hometown. Thanks for the heads up!
You guys always do this.
PRL has nothing to do with speed. It's just updated tower info.

updated tower info can lead to better reception and faster speeds because your phone will do handshakes with towers it never did before (in some cases) and any updates to the towers will reflect on the phones.
I do agree that it doesn't 100% = to speed, but it's an important part of the equation.
Hope somebody upload it.

The only thing that will improve, if at all is cell signal, not data.
All a PRL does is update the information on which towers to connect to, basically
Jeez.....
This happens every time a new PRL comes out, people buying into some placebo effect that doesn't exist.

True, but if you're connecting to a less crowded tower it can help data

The other posts are correct. You are going to connect to the same Sprint towers as you did before on the old PRL. A new tower does not need a PRL update to allow you to connect.
If this was true they would have PRL updates everyday due to new towers and new airaves coming online.
You did it

Just update like you normally would. Or you could manually update it via ##775#

I'm running the Decks 1.3 Rom which I don't think gives me the stock update option. If so I can't find it. I tried doing the 775 trick but it didn't do anything. Is there anything else I can do?

Use QPST. Since you are writing a prl I would go ahead and put 11115 on it though for 3g roaming.

Ahh I should have asked which rom you are using. On AOSP you have to use what he said below. Or you could do what I did. Have a sense rom saved in a nandroid backup.

This is awesome! Not sure why I didn't know about this before. Interesting in the last 6 months there have been no network improvements in my area. But in the next 6 months I'll see 4 data capacity upgrades, 1 data speed upgrade and 1 voice upgrade.
In alot of the areas ive been in, they say theres been a ton of upgrades. But I still get awful data speeds.

Sprint Turns On Enhanced 3G In Atlanta

Who lives in Atlanta? How's the speed?
Thats funny, I was just complaining to some friends about the signal the last 2 days, it as turned on the 27th.

it would be great if anyone in Atlanta could post up some speed test results substantiating these claims.
I have been waiting patiently for sprint to finally make a move and if people ate really seeing better speeds it may be worth keeping.
So anyone from a great data area able to share?

If you're in the affected area, maybe update your PRL and see if that gets it back on track? Or maybe it's just all the new speedy users in Atlanta sucking the bandwidth from the rest of us ;]
Heres the thing I live in McDonough (metro ATL) and work in ATL, since this service has been turned on, it seems like the penetration is so much worse, no signal in any building. I'm no noob, so I have done everything I know how to reset the signal, nothing works, 3 phones. And many other friends have the same problem. I'll be complaining to Sprint soon. Now when I'm outside I get a great signal, with the same speed as before this service was turned on, so take that as you will.

Actually I have all the modems on my sdcard, and now the fb27 thanks to calkulin. Ive always had the best results for signal strength with eg31, best speed with fb21. Just installed fb27, but it hasnt helped the problem Im seeing, this is with my touch and 3 og epics (brother, mom, my og epic). Im also seeing when indoors and use an internet speed test app its choosing out of state servers, but when outside and I have a signal it is choosing a close location, but still jumps from 3/4/5 bars to no bars, and internet speeds drop out about every 15secs for 5 secs. Everything Im saying is well tested on 4 phones, and 1 in 2 places by me, still seeing the same thing. This is either being worked on or just the way the new signal is pulsing.

****, its similar to my town. I'm outside chicago and the network has just been **** for me. Its been getting worse like they have been taking transmitters down each day or something.
Where did you get the other modems? i thought we only had fb15?!?
jeeps, I hope they increase their 3g speeds because this has been hard to deal with. Sometimes I wonder how they get off charging people so much a month for utter crap.

You can use any of the modems we have for the og epic, around 11, I didnt count, but close to that. Look for the modem thread qbking77 has on the dev page.
Edit, sorry, forgot this was the og epic thread for a minute lol

Yeah, I've used the modems. sadly EC05 and EI22 are the best for me. This F series modem has been an overweight blind date for me.
