How can I better help the community? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have no skills and not enough cash to liberally hand out. My phone thanks to devs is Awesome I feel I owe more than giving thanks.I wish I had more to offer. What is the best way to learn more so that in the future I can better serve the community? I must admit I am intimidated by computer codes and such am getting more comfortable one inch at a time...

1. Offer to be a tester.
2. Read and learn so that you can help others out by answering their questions.

You can learn quite a bit from doing both which can lead to you being able to contribute tons more (take it from someone who went from pure lurker to a member of team inferno building from source within the next few months). I was never a tester though. Pretty sure I'd know more if I was.

So next time a new rom comes out I should ask the dev to be a tester? What about an idiots guide to something or a course to take?

Idiot's guide? Dude, play with something till you break and then fix it. You'll have a piece of info to share. Go into release threads and read, read, read. You'll see problems people have and how to fix them. Also, port a ROM for your personal use and fix any problems it has. Start with Gingerbread AOSP. Then move to sense. There are guides galore for both. Start the supernoob way and use ROM Kitchen. Then move on to a file explorer only. Then, if you're feeling really brave, compile a ROM. Start with something that should work out of the box, like CM7. Then move onto things you are bound to run into issues with.
If you have to ask a question you haven't searched hard enough. The answer exists, probably on more than one server. Also, you can always PM a dev for help, but don't do it about every little thing.

I still use the rom kitchen sometimes. It helps me keep some organization. Also, it can unpack boot.img's with the press of like 4 numbers or so. I wouldn't call it nooby, just convenient.
There's really no guide that will give you every bit of information, but there are TONS of resources that you can gather around here. Mr. Highway's porting guide is an excellent starting point; it's easy to follow and can get you started quickly. If you can start piecing things together from there, you'll be set. Just read a bit and don't be afraid to ask someone who may be of help.

You are right, the stuff I have learned with the power of Google is incredible. I was just wondering if some sort of schooling/class in lets say computer programming or text book could help me better understand and grasp what's going on behind closed doors. I just have to get my hands and feet dirty.

Bare With Me....

I am coming from a T-Mobile HTC HD2, and I have Unlocked the phone, installed several ROM's and Android Build's, but I am getting bored, so I got a Vibrant now, Do I need to Unlock the Vibrant and Root the phone in order to install a Custom ROM? If so, if you could provide me the link to a program to Root the phone, and Unlock the phone, would be much appreciated, and I can go from there, thank you. Please do not flame this, obviously I know what I am talking about.
Read the bible and all questions will be answered. Basically do not be lazy and do a search its all here the info you need.
Cheers.

Anybody notice there are two of these threads?
You do realize you posted the same thread 15 minutes before this one. By the way you are getting flamed in that other thread for not reading sticky threads. They are sticky for a reason. The one in general and the bible have pretty much everything you might want.

doesn't matter
It doesn't matter whether you are a noob or know what u talkin....
Anytime you create a new thread in the Dev section(twice!!) with such a basic question....you are asking for it....search man search!!
Mods please move....
You should be searching, but ignore the a**holes, just in the future make sure you check out all stickies and abuse the search function ( and NEVER double post, because then even I wont feel bad for you)...otherwise you are welcoming the douchebags to come out from under their rocks and prey on fresh meat
to answer your questions, you do not have to "unlock" the phone. Just root the phone in order to obtain Superuser and Busybox. Install "OCLF" from the market, this is the easiest and fastest way to root your device. And from there just read up on ROMs/Mods for yourself to see what you want. Most ROM threads have specific installation instructions, good luck.
This phone is so easy to mod, its silly. However, sometimes it can be TOO easy, in the sense where if someone gets caught up in the simplicity and starts rushing, you may miss a small detail that could cause major setbacks. Its happened to the best of us, it doesnt mean you dont know what youre doing, it justs means your enot reading carefully. So no matter how simple something may seem/sound, always make you read carefully so as to prevent issues that will cause you to post/panic like crazy.

devs have to have the phone in order to make things for it. I believe 2 people have it so far and are working on it.
The phones been out maybe a month, have patience
There are 4 roms in development thread, OC/UV kernel.... what else do you need?
This belongs in Q&A section, not development.
Yes... We have a oc/uv kernel. several roms. several developers.
Other known developers should be getting their phones soon.

I meant the OP. But yeah, I remember waiting months with other phones just for a simple Android update.
Yes your right there are 4 ROM's to bad they are all mostly the same with a few different tweaks, just look at other phones that devs have completely different types of ROM's....and its not a disrespectful post because all I hear is about great devs working hard on ROM's for other phones yet I don't really hear much about them working on the mt4g, not saying they are not but its nice to hear that someone is working on something....why must you guys ***** about something so simple for no reason....sheeesh
And thanks to those with a simple answer..since that was all that was needed
You are the one making a stupid post. You have a question and then you answer your own question by saying there is no one "paying attention" to it. What other phone that has been out as long as the myTouch 4g has so many "completely different" type of Roms? Most Roms tend to be built off a few main sources with tweaks like you said, the super popular Moto Droid has about 4 of those tops.
Oh my God...listen no one forced you to read this post...get off your damn high horse...this a q&a thread....not a question then ***** about it thread....if you have no answer move on to the next post....the dudes from earlier answered my question perfectly also found out zinx got the mytouch4g thanks to that post...stop being useless or keep it moving..
Also I got high hopes for zinx...dude does wonders

zinx is taking over as the CM retainer for the MT4G since kmobs unfortunately had issues with UPS and such. once a phone has a CM rom, so many others make a CM based rom. So be patient and in due time there will be a slough of roms for this awesome phone
@teamsilence hahaha nice man! way to integrate linux and humor

Starting to lose faith in this phone.

Every time i come online and look up a question i seem to find all jargon now to explian. im am not a Tech minded person and dont understand jargon but brought the phone as i liked it but since i brought it all i seem to find is battery issues which i dont have lag fixes which my phone seems fast enough. Its on Froyo 2.2 and rooted with z4 root what ever this all means lol. my mate was playing on my phone and sais ghe rooted it while i was cookin th tea. lol.
right i was looking for a theme to personalise it a bit more but i seem to find themes for jpo.tpi etc does this mean i need a theme that fits with my current firmware as i honestly dont have a clue?
Do some reading. There are a lot of really good how-to guides on this forum that people do not have an excuse not to know how to do something. If you are not comfortable doing it, don't.
I am a technical person, but I have a difficult time reading technical stuff as I have ADD and can not concentrate long enough to understand some things. What do I do, well, I only do the things I am comfortable doing. I would like to cook my own ROM's but I can't concentrate long enough to learn how to do it, so I don't do it.
Flashing your phone with a new theme, a new ROM, or a new kernel to speed it up can kill it it if you do not know what you are doing. If you see a theme you want to install, there should be instructions how to do it on that page, if there isn't, go to another one.
Ian
I agree to the previous poster.
Just read the HOW-TO´s, they are really good and well written.
Rooting and flashing a custom ROM is pretty easy. When you have followed a guide once you will see how easy this really is.

As mentioned before, if you do not know what you are doing, DON'T! But if you are like me fed up with the crappy stuff that comes with the phone and all the lagz, you can try to flash your phone.
It is important that you follow the how to's and read 2/3 times carefully before you start the whole process.

[WIP][Learning Experience][Project] You gotta start somewhere {Nothing here yet}

Hey guys!
Overview
I'm going to go from kernel dev noob, to basic knowledge kernel crafting. Im making this thread for anyone who wants to help me (This isnt a help me thread, if you want to help then that would be GREAT but ill eventually learn the old fashioned way [Reading the internet ] anyways) or to anyone who is a noob and wants to learn along side me
Or you can just watch thats cool too.
Backdrop
Ive made a couple small mods here and there and a couple basic roms, but i have a lot of free time on my hands lately so I decided id learn how to make/compile a basic kernel. I have in mind the stock kernel (and stock CM kernel) with BLN, voodoo, and overclocking only. Mathkid95 pointed me towards forking off of voodoo and after setting up github... here we are.
Progress
4/8 - As of right now i just got my github set up, and im proud to say that im pretty noobish at using github right now, @enzofall is on board with me and this little project.
Trying to use fork queue is not working just sits there, Any thoughts?
4/8 - Made a cyanogenmod kernel fork, going to do that one first. Fork queue still isnt working for some reason ???
4/9 - Going to try compiling just to see if i can, for some reason compiling looks harder than it should be haha
4/10 - No go on compile.
4/13 - Me and fred have been digging around. Progress is in motion and knowledge is being made. Reached out to the dev community for some guidance But for now, i have freshly forked and cloned repo's of the CM crespo4G kernel and voodoo. Now if only i knew exactly what to do
Links
Here's my pretty empty github - https://github.com/igotsa
People in cahoots with this
Fred
Lorenzo
> Final words If you can compile kernels, make changes with github, and are all around better than everyone involved in this little tinkering project then by all means, chime in
If youd like to join in, then just say so and we can Gtalk/Huddle/call/send letters in the mail, whatever
That is all
Who knows why ill need this.
Might as well take another.
Good luck!

For now just tester im still new to kernel dev so its a learning process for me as well (no github atm). But I can test the hell out of any kernel you make. Plus really busy at work lately so its hard for me atm to help dev anything. I should be able to help in a few weeks in dev but for now just here to help testing. thx

This fork queue is pissing me off -__-
Any thoughts as to why it wont work?

Is there a more straightforward guide to compiling? All i found is this http://forum.geeksphone.com/index.php?topic=2366.0 which im not sure if it would work even, i know id have to replace all the geeksphone garbage and replace it with whatever im compiling.
Right? Is there a better way? Im just trying to compile the stock cyanogen crespo4g kernel.
Edit: what about this? http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Howto:_Build_a_Kernel_Port is that a better one? I dont want to follow another bunk guide, as ive already been through enough trial and error. -.-
Edit v2:Or maybe this one? http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Building_Kernel_from_source ??? So many options :/
Sorry, but this doesn't belong here. Thanks for understanding and good luck with this.
Guess it got moved. Not sure why cause there are a few threads in development section that don't belong.

If you're on 2.3.4 then you have to downgrade to froyo and then root your phone there. I'd link to the how to but I can't right now. Search the threads here in general or q&a, this has been answered for a few people already really recently.
Ran into the thread I was mentioning just now so figured I'd give you the link. Again, this is only if you're on Android 2.3.4 aka Gingerbread.

If you are running 2.2.1 what the problem is input error.
it's
cd /sdcard/root
Cee Dee [space] forward slash sdcard forward slash root
and i might sound like a complete jack wagon here but i don't care.
IF you cannot follow simple instructions like how to root your device. Esp this device then i would highly suggest staying away from the rooting ring. This is not for the faint of heart. This is not for the people who have no clue what they are doing. This is for well educated people who know and understand the basics and the risk there of. If you should get into a pickle, you are the only that will be able to get you out of it.
Just a question. Do you know if you have a good or bad eMMC chip? you know the bad ones are pretty much a handwritten guarantee that your phone will brick.

wow, I guess you were never new, just knew everything you ever needed to know right off the bat right? How about instead of getting preachy and climbing onto your high horse next time you just help the user out.
It really annoys me how some users here seem to think they can just belittle anyone they feel like it when it comes to rooting questions, they take the "I am better then you and you're an idiot for asking questions" stance instead of simply helping them out and guiding them through the process. If you don't have the time or want to help out someone who asks a question do the board a favor and just move on.

So basically what i did annoys you, but you did the same thing. The only difference is i offered help to the OP. You didn't. Your issue with me could of been addressed via PM. instead of clogging up their their thread with nothing that pertains to the question at hand.
If treating the OP like a 3 year old then going on a tangent over intelligence levels is helping then I suppose you did.
But you are correct I shouldn't have clogged up the forum with a post and no I don't like the current attitude some users have here, it needs to be addressed.

If you want the forum to remain alive and valuable source of information - then your "good Samaritan" attitude, while nice, is doing a horrible job. If you want the forum to become a mess of things with valuable info hidden below lots of trash, zillions of same questions asked and very few proper answers given - then by all means, continue preaching good attitude. I believe you know what is said about good intentions.
I've seen moderator interventions on such threads, and I kinda agree with the point I've seen. While welcoming, this is XDA-Developers, not XDA-Phone-users, and the forum name says it the best. As in any developer forum, RTFM should be rightfully expected from users.
But we hijacked someone's thread.
On the other hands, during the last months were at least 2 more threads with the same question, so we won't do anyone a disservice by keeping the thread up
