1. How do I put the N7 into Tablet UI? After its been rooted.
2. Is there any problems with the Tablet UI?
3. Do you think that it is better than the Hybrid UI?
4. Does the market not work after do you change it?

1) Use ES file explorer as root and edit build.prop LCD density to 160.
2) Not that I know of.
3) 100%
4) Works perfectly.

I prefer portrait for most things, but like to use landscape on the homescreen when exiting a landscape app, so I will most likely use a launcher that supports rotation.
I just tried the Nova beta that supports JB, but on my Tab 2 7.0.
I'm starting to see why people are wanting the tablet UI back. I can only imagine it will be worse on N7 with the nav bar on the right side / notification bar at the top when in landscape.
What I would really like to see is a mod that will:
1) Resize the nav bar to 35dpi (47px) while keeping the notification bar 33px. This will give a usable screen of 800x1200 in portrait.
2) Move the nav bar and dock to the bottom of the screen in landscape (rather than keeping them on the right side of the screen). This would yield a usable screen size of 1280x720 (with the notification bar at the top).
For me, this would be the best mix of Tablet UI and Jellybean portrait only UI. So basically, the way ICS worked, but with the notifications moved to the top. And hopefully this can be done without editing the device DPI and causing all sorts of issues.

i used 170 dpi....loaded the go launcher............ gorgeous!!!

170 will not see all apps after cache is cleared from Google play.

i dont understand... what does that mean and how do i prevent it???

I'll be waiting until devs get their hands on their N7's and build a modified navbar in roms, perhaps like in ParanoidAndroid.

Viewing in landscape??

OK im sure this might be a dumb question....but I can't seem to View anything on my Nexus in landscape view...only portrait, anyone know how to adjust this?
If you pull the notification bar down there is a lock next to the date. You can also force it with an app like Rotation Locker from the market.

look up the one click rooting tool as it is the best way to do it. besides rooting your device it also installs cwm. with cwm you can flash roms and kernels to improve the look and performance of your N7.
quick boot is another excellent tool.
es file explorer is needed to edit the dpi on the N7. i prefer the dpi at 175 for a tablet ui on the N7. after you change the dpi go into settings and change text size to large and your good to go! happy rooting to you
cheers
Much of the Nexus 7 UI has been designed using portrait mode. With that being said, some apps will still rotate (if you have the rotation lock off which was already mentioned) but for the most part they intend you use portrait.

Although most of it works fine in landscape mode, I've used mine mostly locked in landscape mode since I got it without any issues.
The launcher is what is locked in portrait which screws everyone up. Try downloading a new launcher like Apex or Go Launcher. Most apps will rotate but a few will force themselves to portrait mode.

Root, is it worth it?

I have my non rooted n7 and i have my rooted desire. I originally wanted to keep this stock and to enjoy its beauty out of the box.
However, i really want the tablet home screen, not the tablet status bar, softkeys or the phone ui in landscape. Just the type of launcher(home screen and app drawer) you get on other tablets. Now I really want to root to get a custom rom that does this but along with that comes some cons.
First is I want the ota's as this will be the first to get them as it is googles stock.
Second, I want Google wallet when it comes out in the UK on an ota, but Google warn users that rooting adds risk to gwallet which sounds bad. However I will get it earlier if i root, so I'm in a muddle ATM.
Lastly is if I do install a custom rom, it may have bugs cause the nexus just came out, can somebody maybe recommend a stable rom that suits my choice of a tablet launcher and a high benchmark rank. Do some apps and games fail to run on custom ROMs?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Doesn't sound like you need to root, sounds like you just need a new launcher. Try Nova Launcher or Apex Launcher. OK, granted, you can't really do anything about the notification/status bar without going to a different ROM but maybe just give another launcher a try and see what you think. If that doesn't do it for you then maybe consider rooting and going with a mod that gives you a different status bar.
Originally, I said I don't want to change the soft keys and status bar plus I've tried Nova, but that's just the landscape phone ui and apex is bugged.

I admit, I'm confused. How does a tablet home screen differ from a phone home screen?

There is no left search bar in the tablet launcher, instead it is in the top left. Niether is there a dock, the app drawer shortcut is in the top right.

If those things are important to you then, yes, you'll probably have to root and install a new ROM but I don't know of any that'll address your needs, sorry. Guess I should've kept my mouth shut in the first place
Btw, do you want to use a tablet launcher in portrait or landscape? Honestly, I rarely use my Nexus 7 in landscape.
The dock is an option on all the launchers I've used. I've turned it off in each one. And I open my app drawer with an upward gesture on Nova and Apex. And I've turned off the search bar ... or I just don't notice it.

[POLL] Stock vs tablet workspace

I would like to start this to see how many people use tablet workspace since it seems only a few roms seem to be embracing this. Please state what rom you are using and what you use to trigger tablet mode.

Stock, rooted 4.1.1 here.
Used the local.prop DPI setting to get it into tablet mode and use the app "Set Orientation" to force the last remains (like lockscreen) into landscape for total tablet experience to my likes
Also I'm using GoLauncherEx, which works fine for me landscaped.
Alot of you are using a depreciated method of forcing tabUI by using dpi hacks. IMHO only sgt7 and PA are the only seamless roms that do this well. PA also lets you choose the navbar height independently.
Personally I would never run phabletUI on my tablet. That sounds funny

I wouldn't call it "depricated", I'd call it "the savest and most less intrusive way".
I don't want to flash a different ROM and I don't have to edit any system files - #1 way of doing it for me. And it works just fine

It may seem like its working fine but when I did it that way many apps were gone from my market (google play music, wallet off the top of my head) and the copy/paste bar was nowhere to be found when editing text.
Of course I could have messed something up and yours could be fine.

About the apps, maybe I just got lucky so far and the ones I use on my N/ don't set the compatibility stuff in the way that makes them appear to be incompatible with the N7.
About the copy/paste bar, I just tried and yes, it's "gone" like you say.
But I use GoKeyboard and that has copy/paste buttons as well, so I can live with that for now

How much would you miss tablet UI?

Apparently it's going. I will really miss it. I don't think there is any need for two thick black bars on a 7 inch device. I like having the extra space and I like the aesthetics of the tablet UI, especially with a reduced nav bar. I don't know why they are removing tablet UI and if the devs can do anything about it. I hope they can! Will you miss it too or is it just me?
Edit: Turns out it's just a rumour, phew!
Most will miss the 10" tablet UI but honestly, I don't expect that I will. The centered buttons are not that big a deal and the "Odd" way the Nexus 7's notification system lurks around, unobtrusive enough that I probably won't care.
I will be more interested in things like Miracast support and web browsing performance than I will be in the UI changes.

I know, I'm on PA, but once the update kicks in the ROMs won't have tablet UI. Correct me if I'm wrong!

Btw where did you see it was removed and are we talking about the 4.2 update?
Sent from my MB855 using Tapatalk 2
I thought I would hate it when I first saw it
But honestly, I like it. I was forced to use it for the first month before I rooted my n7, and I got used to it. Then I installed a tabui ROM and imo it doesn't work properly on a 7 inch screen. I know a lot will disagree but I am just sayin
I use the normal phone ui now, its just more consistent and easier to use for me. If I want more screen space, I will remove the bars with 'expand desktop' on the ROMs I use

things i hate about standard nexus 7 UI
no quick access to brightness. in tablet UI i can quickly tap the time in lower left hand corner and adjust brightness on the fly.. cant do that with nexus 7 UI
i hate how i dont get Tablet APPs and instead get the phone app for youtube gmail etc..
those are the only things that make me to to tablet ui..
if i could have quick access to Brightness AND native tablet youtube and gmail apps in the standard nexus 7 UI then id be fine.
i really do love the expanded youtube app in tablet UI 4 nice rows in portrait mode compared to phone youtube app. yuck.
Yea the tablet mode is supreme. If it doesn't "work" right then it isn't implemented right. EOS has it so stupidly simple that it is a godsend. You can enable/disable it on the fly and it doesn't screw with your other apps. Just combines the bars into 1.
The notification pulldown menu on the stock UI is horrible. Needs fullscreen or something. Looks tacked on like an afterthought.
I will be disappointed once 4.2 hits and it goes away. Remember tablet UI has to be present to unlock it. Google may remove it completely to streamline their OSs.

It's all over the place in the ROMs threads but there is a discussion kinda starting here in the PA thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33692765 . Reading this again there seems to be some uncertainty about it. So that's something I guess...

I've tried several: 280, 300, 320, 360, 400 & 420...all worked fine but you'd see issues in certain apps, and certain apps would jump into tablet mode (pretty sure that was on the lower ones, of course).
I stuck on 420 since it still shrinks things considerably down from the stock 480 but most apps don't have overlapping or other issues. The only app I've noticed an issue is the dialer, but not the phone on inbound or ongoing calls, just when you are dialing the number. You can still see the numbers and hit each with no problem, it's just shrunk up a little strangely. Other than that I'm loving 420 (no pun intended ). :good:
Awesome. What are you using to change dpi? On my note 2 with exposed you were able to choose dpi per application, anyone know if the module is working for that?
Can't remember the name of the mod.

Found it.
In downloads, app settings. If you use this you can modify only apps you want so you don't have to worry about compatibility or force closing system gui.
I set Novo launcher lower and a few other apps.

Update:
I changed the system ui to 420, along with Novo(remove shadow from desktop), and messaging and it looks perfect.
Fyi this doesn't break or distort the phone app.

Thanks for mentioning that module. I hadn't taken the time to look through all the options as I downloaded and set up a ton through Wanam's module and was pretty satisfied. Really glad you mentioned it so I can get the one wrinkle ironed out. Appreciate it bro!

I read in other threads that you were really interested in getting the bottom bar style tab mode going, and I know I mentioned tablet mode above in my response but that was only in apps, the System UI never changed...and I believe the person who responded to you in the other thread is correct - 4.3 android doesn't have that built in to the system UI as an option.
For example, before my Note 3 I had an Nexus 4 and was running Paranoid Android - the developers had to basically make tablet mode from scratch to keep the traditional bottom bar style going after 4.3. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I thought you should know. Of course somebody could endeavor to build it like PA did or we could get PA at some point but without that I doubt you'll find your holy grail anytime soon.
Also guys you'll want the play store fix. Play store by default will his apps based on your dpi, This mood will fix that.

Yeah, I use either 320 or 360 mostly when I want to change an app. 320 can be a little bit too small sometimes, but right around that zone I think is ideal. Though I really haven't changed a ton of apps, mostly System, Chrome, reddit, Facebook, XDA, Go SMS that I can think of off the top of my head.

Agreed, though I went as low as 360 for System, just because I wanted notifications to be shorter in the pull down so I can see more. I usually have several persistent ones in there now, so I want to be able to see all of my actual notifications as well.
