Flew to the Middle East, forgot to ask AT&T for the code to use local SIM card. - Atrix 4G General

How do I go about getting my phone to use local SIM cards?

I use gsmliberty if in a hurry, if not, well.... lol I got my last unlock code for 2.95$ from Ebay, but it took couple of days. There's plenty of websites and Ebay Sellers offering unlock services. Some are better than others and there's a huge range of prices. There's a thread discussing the merits of different ones on almost every Android related forum. Google is your friend.

Go to the att website and talk to support. They will ask for account info then give you the sim unlock for free. You will need your imei # too

Thanks guys, ended up using unlockthatphone.com since I'm on a family plan and the owner of the account wasn't available.

Yea I actually just unlocked an Atrix today. Called ATT customer support line and hit 0 a lot, got a guy on the phone and said I bought this phone, not in contract, out of exclusivity period and dont have an ATT account, can I get the code to unlock it so that I can use it where I want to...he took about 5 minutes and got me the code.
Phone is on a Tmobile network in my friend's hands right now.
I wouldn't pay some site online and give them your IMEI number. Just seems sketchy to me.
Yeah as people said just call AT&T why pay when they will do it for free, when my friend sent me my Atrix i had to call them from the UK To get it unlocked and it was pretty simple and painless
I did, i called at&t but he said he cant give the code and that i must let the person who bought the mobile ask the for the code..i bought this mobile from someone in Lebanon ..any hacking way to unlock it? I tried the unlocking sites they sent me code but none of them worked..can any call at&t for me plz and try to get me the code? I will be verry thankfull..thank u

You got lucky that AT&T gave you the code without you being their customer.
I tried it in the past with Verizon and they basically told me to bug off.
The general rule is that they give out unlock codes only to their customers after a couple of months since phone release date.
No contract phones at full price already come unlocked, so that excuse rarely works.
Anyway, some people still get lucky and get the code, but the majority isn't. It all depends on generosity of the customer rep.
I unlocked all my phones through online services, and there is nothing shady in your imei being requested, since the unlock codes get generated based on imei. AT&T will ask for you're imei as well in order to get the phone unlocked.

Agreed.
As to the OP's question of "is there a hack?", I assume that there is not. Those providing codes are likely paying insiders for some private key.
To the OP, why did the person you buy the phone from not get it unlocked? If he was an ATT customer who was in Lebanon it would have been a no-brainer to do such. And it would be free. I have had no issue at all unlocking my last 3 ATT phones (via ATT) so that I could travel internationally.
Think perhaps he might not be the rightfull owner?
I really do not like the entire "locked phone" concept, but given that it exists one should know how to avoid pitfalls. Do not buy locked phones from 3rd parties unless you know what you are doing.
Yea its th first time that i buy a locked fone..i loved the atrix thats why i bought it..neway thank i guyss..

Can I use an actual T-Mobile Sim on Straight Talk?

Please forgive the dumb question but I haven't had a phone with a Sim in years.
After botching a cut job with the straight talk sim to get it to fit, I went and got a micro sim straight from a tmo store.
**Can I call ST and have them activate this Sim on the ST network? Or is there actually something special about the ST Sim?**
I already have all the APN info for ST on the phone since the botched card still kinda functions. The tmo Sim is not linked to any account; They just pulled it out of a drawer and sold it to me.
No, need a ST SIM.

Damn. OK, thanks!
Can you explain why not? What makes the difference between a Tmobile compatible ST sim and an actual Tmobile sim that can't be overcome with software mods?
Well for one, no one mods the way a sim interacts with the phone.. Also Straight Talk sims supposedly get lower tower priority.

Hmm. Fair enough.
As for the software mods, I guess I was referring more to setting up the access point info. Clearly I don't have much background with sim stuff, so I appreciate the info.
Nah, you can't mod the SIMs or anything. That's outside the scope of most people's technical ability.

Just order a new one, use coupon code SIMSAVE and get the SIM card for free with a month of service purchased.
Might also want to get a microSIM cutter on Amazon it's like 3.90 with PRIME shipping.

That's the boat I'm in. One of each is on order and will be here next week.
I was just hoping I could use the Tmo one and not worry about it (and not have wasted the cash).
Thanks again for humoring me guys!

One main reason you can not use anything other than an actual ST SIM, is that your account is based on it's serial number.
Normally ST accounts are based on the serial number of the ST Phone, but since this is BYOD, they use the SIM instead.
You can try to open a ticket on ST facebook and convince the reps your SIM is faulty so they send you a replacement. Else you're gonna have to buy another one.
Hope that helps,

Is a sim card tied specifically with the phone it comes with?

Say you have two new sprint phones, one white, one black, both s4s. The black one, the card was missing. The white one, the card is there. Could the card from the white one have been put in the black one, activated and on the network, and it work? Is the sim only able to work with the phone it came with, even though you have two of the same model? I asked someone at a sprint store if they charge for a replacement sim and they said no but they don't have any for this phone. They said I'd have to go somewhere else. Too many conflicting stories.
You can use the sim if it is activated yes. I know online when I transferred phones it gave me the option to use the sim I had or the one that came with the new phone.
Yes you can. It costs $50 to replace the sim card..

I tried using a sim grin a kyocera torque and salesperson helping me, which was in there phone with sprint, trying to get the phone activated, said the sim wasn't compatible. Yes the torque was a lte phone.

The thing that makes me so mad about that "option" is it's probably 99.9% profit for sprint for the cost of the card. I would refuse to pay for a card if the phone I bought and wanted didn't come with one new out of the box.

I would give some push back on that...sim cards ring at $0 at pos....curious if they are also selling batteries thinking they are padding their acc sales.
Regardless...I will research it
I will also add that I see a number of situations where the sim IS tied to a phone and a number of them where it is tied to the account. For the most part the sim stays with the account UNLESS the new phone has a sim.
Confusing I know. I think Sprint is still trying to figure out the right way to handle the sim/esn set up.

Yeah, it's not like swapping Sims on gsm.
A big problem is the answer you get differs with who you ask. Sounds like training employees isn't universal with some things. One store can say no and not help with a problem. Go to another store, you might be able to get your situation taken care of.

Full retail price AT&T Note 3 Sim Unlock

My Note 3 was paid in full. I called AT&T yesterday and talked with 3 representatives.
The 1st one told me to wait a year till the end of my contract and hung me up.
The 2nd one told me to wait at least 60 days and hung me up.
The 3rd one told me to contact with Samsung to unlock. I gave him an earful and he setup a "high priority case" for getting me the unlock code.
This morning, I got the code and successfully unlock my Note 3......

i am not having great luck getting mine unlocked. did you go through a certain phone number or anything like that?
so the purpose of the code is to unlock the phone and be able to use with other carriers. My belief was that if you buy a phone full price, it would be automatically unlocked? Isn't that so?

Buying a phone from At&t at full price DOES NOT mean its unlocked. I bought two Note 3's, one full priced (from At&t Next) and one on contract.
Called the next day for unlock codes, the woman told me to call in 15 days and only the one that was paid in full could be unlocked. They just didnt have the codes in the system. I've been with At&t a few years now and my account is in good standing. Usually after a month or so I call and they give me the unlock, contract or not. But I just went ahead and ran chanfire's unlock app and it worked. Both phones unlocked. Much easier than having to hassle with At&t. I'm on At&t so I really dont care/need the unlock. But its nice to have I guess.

thats kind of how things went for me. in the past ive called in for an unlock and got it though those other times were after id had the phone for awhile.
this time the first person said to go to the unlock site and request it and if it was denied to call back and try another route. theyd look over my account history and all that stuff in that case. anyways, on the unlock site as soon as i put in my imei number it said it couldnt be done. i called in and the person i talked to this time said something about the unlock codes not being in the system. he sounded sincere about it and it made sense, but to be honest i really didnt believe it. i just didnt see why they wouldnt have them. in the end i ran the unlock app and its been going fine since saturday.
I have a question, If I have an Note 3 from AT&T and unlock the Note 3 and has been reported lost, I can use it with Straight Talk?

The phone will be back listed with At&t. Pretty much it won't be able to be activated on At&t again. If it's unlocked it should work. However, I have seen some stores check the phone's IMEI status and they only take phone's with clean a IMEI/ESN.
But you've already given the impression that you are guilty of some suspicious activity with that post. Just be careful, and always stay legit!

Works just fine on Straight Talk. I've been using it for a week or two...
What the previous poster said about it working on AT&T if the phone has been reported lost. If its an AT&T based MVNO such as Straight Talk, Net10, AIO, or Go Phone running on the AT&T network a lost and blacklisted phone WILL NOT work even if it's unlocked. You shouldn't have any problems using it on T-Mobile or using a T-Mobile based Straight Talk card since AT&T and T-Mobile aren't sharing blacklisted IMEI's.
And about those "lost" phones... Nothing sketchy there at all.

There's SIM unlock instructions from other post in General section, just root the phone and use Chainfire's Region Lock Away. And its free.
Please keep in mind, once you root your phone ISIS mobile wallet will not work... Which is fine, I don't use it enough to care about it.

Here are the links to SIM unlock from this XDA developers, please thanks them for their hard work.
ROOT instructions:

Region Lock Away - will also unlock carrier - Confirmed on 2 Note 3s on AT&T.

Please thanks if I've helped in any ways.
If your phone is reported "lost or stolen" it will be blacklist from the original carrier and eventually to all US carriers.

I'm wondering the same having only used GSM phones. So far I'm using my AT&T SIM but believe Verizon has better coverage in my area (western CT).
On their site I started here (scroll down) with the 'I'm not with Verizon' button, then chose 'I have my own device' on the popup and got to a page I can't directly link that asks for my device ID/IMEI, and then tells me "The phone associated with the Device ID you entered is not compatible with the Verizon Wireless network."
I would like the 3 GB $45/mo plan and am assuming that's with no contract and should be available for the Moto XPE, right? I can go to a store but I'd like to know the facts first to avoid getting derailed by unknowledgeable/uncooperative staff, though I'd prefer doing it online if I can get past the phone ID barrier. Maybe they'll update their approved phones soon but I'd like to shift over before the 20th when my current month ends with AT&T. Should I try calling them and has anyone done that successfully?

I called the number on the website and got a sales associate who also took my IMEI and said it's not currently 'registered' (the word he used) on Verizon, so I can't get a new account using it. He couldn't/wouldn't give any clear idea on if/when it will be but did say the new plans are no-contract now. My guess is a store will tell us the same thing, so won't bother unless we hear of success stories from others and how they did it.

Or simply buy a regular sim card for htc m9 on ebay or wherever and then chat with them or call and ask them to activate without device, tell them you are using non-vzw device which works just fine on Verizon,or some people had success at corporate stores with managers activating,or if you have a good premium retailer try that as well.
Need an imei of a device that takes a nano sim that is allowed on VZW network. I wasn't making a new account but I needed the nano sim. Wife's device (galaxy s6)is on the account and had the VZW rep use her device imei to issue me a simcard. Works perfect.

This is why I think using a prepaid Sim might work, because since is under Verizon's BYOD, Bring Your Own Device, that they will allow it to be activated. I am then wondering if I then ask for a normal contract if it would be simpler.

There's only 3 places to buy from: Motorola, Amazon and Best Buy. If you're buying from Best Buy, they can activate it for you. I believe with Amazon, you would have to go to your carrier just like if you bought from Motorola.
Pretty irritating
I bought the prepaid sim pack yesterday & spent an hour and a half on the phone with them and can't get it activated. Does anyone know what to do? Apparently the device isn't in the system according to the techs I spoke with even though you can enter it in the device compatibility and it says it is
