Few software questions and USB driver?? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Been playing with my Neus and i love it
However i have a few questions:
Firstly my laotp running windows 7 cant find a drive for the tablet? I want to transefer music, videos and pictures but it wont find it?!?!?1
Any ideas?
Also is there a way to change the apps on the slide lock screen? all i have is google and unlock.
Also is there a way to make folders within the menu screen? I have folders on the home screen but within the menu everything is EVERYWHERE. any way to make folders to clean it up?
Thanks

I run Windows XP and I can't do MTP either.
And about folders. Drag an icon into another icon to create a folder.

Yes you can make folders on the homescreen . But can you make them within the menu? When you press the menu button all your apps are there' is there any way to make folders here?

Yes, but not with the stock launcher. Try "Go Launcher"

Start menu?
Do you mean homescreen, program menu, or programs that automatically start when you turn the phone on?
Windows has a start menu!
hehe, I'm a old windows user
I mean program menu

Probably have to uninstall the app to remove its icon.
Or install something like 'Apps organizer' to group together apps with tags.
is there not other way to remove icones
(ex. I use handcent sms, so it would be nice to remove the pre installed sms icon from the program menu)
Why even use the program menu?
Create your shortcut to Handcent SMS.
I just have the programs I actually use on the homescreen, e.g. handcent sms. The program menu will show all installed apps so it can get a bit messy there and I don't know of a way to fix that.
drag the icon into the trash bin. when you press and hold the icon, drag it to the menu tray. it will get it off your homescreen.
Because your an x Window user like myself im guessing you want to organise your apps in the apps menu because its getting messy as there are loads just in one long list!
Unlike in windows where you could organise them into seperate folders for example: Games, Tools, Media etc.
If this is your issue its something i looked into when i first started using Android. As yet ive not seen a solution.
There is an app that does some sort of tidying maybe it was mentioned in this thread.
If im on the wrong lines just ignore me!!

I don't get it.
I just installed Apps Organizer.
Whats the difference between this and using Folders?
There is no app that organizes the app drawer.
AppsOrganizer helps organize them on homescreen(s).
I recall an app when I had my G1 that created folders in the app drawer. Launcher2? I think?
Maybe someone else knows.

That'd be pretty sweet.
Abc Organizer:
1. You can assign icons to your "folders"
2. You can back up your "folder" configuration to your SD card
3. You can customize the sorting of the app shortcuts, like most used first (on top), last used first, alpha
That's about all I can think of at the moment. It's not that great if you have a simple config and don't mind folder icons on your desktop.
Apps Organizer, I believe, is similar, but doesn't have contacts/direct dial or url support.
What I really want is when i press the program menu button, at the bottom in the home screen. That I come to a organized menu with my favorites at the top and some programs organized in the sub menus.
Is there no way to make this happen?

Correct. As far as I know, this is not possible.
I too wish it was possible, because I would love that feature. I don't need things like Amazon MP3 sitting there being useless and taking up space.

I beleive a home replacement app called dxtop can do what you want. Not sure about the other ones.

Once your apps are tagged, you can create shortcuts to app-organizer tags (folders). If you tag more apps they automatically appear in that tag folder, same with uninstalling.
Other benifits include:
1) tag one program with multiple tags (labels), ex: tools, gps. This will make the icon appear in both folders.
2) long pressing on an icon in a app-organizer folder gives you options to change labels and uninstall.
3) new applications go into a default "other apps" folder, so you don't have to hunt for them later.

Organizing the menu

Hey I hope this isn't a repeat question but I did search. I was wondering if thee was a way to organize the menu on the evo like we could do back with wm? Make folders etc.
Thanks
P.s. I wasn't sure if this belonged here or q and a. Sorry if wrong section.

You can make make folders on the home screen
Long press home screen > select folder but that's about it.
Can't customize the the pop up menu.
Try something like "apps organizer" (free).
I never use the main launch button any more.
Ok thanks for the info, will look at that app. I was trying to customize the pop up menu...

Can you hide apps you don't use?
I think you need to use a separate app for that.

Some basic noobie Galaxy S questions

First up, hello to everyone.
I'm a new convert to Android having picked up a Galaxy S a couple of weeks ago, and I've got a couple of (what I'm sure are) basic questions about how best to work it:
First up, how do I go about creating folders on my SD Card. I'm assuming that's the best way to organise things like icons, themes, wallpapers etc.
Is it possible to edit the icons on the dock at the bottom of the screen? Can I put different Apps down there? Can I change the icons that those apps use?
I'm having issues with Widgets - do I need to restart the phone each time I install an app with a widget? There are some apps which allow me to use a widget straight away, but then there are some (like the BBC news feed) which just doesn't show up in my widget list
Can anyone reccomend a good link or article on how to root the Galaxy S? I'd like to it be as simplified as possible please.
Thanks loads in advance for both your help and your time.
Cheers
1)while browsing your sd card, press menu button and it will you the option to create a folder
2)click on applications button while on home screen to change to applications view, then click menu (left button) and edit, then you can just drag the icons in and out of the dock
3)not sure, widgets that i tried all ran after installing them without rebooting the phone
4)I suggest you check out the Galaxy S I9000 Android Development subforum right here on xda, there are some great guides there.
1) I just do it when plugged into my PC via USB in Mass Storage mode. =)
2) As random.si said.
3) I've never needed to restart the phone for widget...are you sure those apps actually have widgets?...Any widgets from the Market or installed apps should always be under 'Android Widgets' as soon as the app is installed, otherwise try using the app first as it may have a config or something.
4) There's a stickied guide in the Android Development subforum here! It's dead easy, so no worries there. Just follow the instructions to the letter, but that's not hard for rooting the Galaxy S.

Applications open in the background don't use any CPU time and if the RAM they use is needed Android closes them by itself.
Android isn't designed to let the user close applications. If you really have to close them for some specific reason you can use a task killer from the market.

Actually those 6 applications are NOT actually running(necessarily). They are just the last 6 applications you have used.

Ok. Thanks very much guys for your help.
One more question.
How to enable vibration to incoming text message? Can`t see any option for that.
You should try out prehome. When you press home key, it will show the active task, and you can switch or kill task there. Press home key the second time will bring you to home. I love it.
Does anybody knows how to set vibration on incoming messages? Can`t find it. strange

If ever in doubt, always try the menu buttons.
Pretty much every app hides its settings and many controls under the menu buttons to stop the screen being cluttered up with buttons.
The menu button is also context-sensitive to whatever you're doing at the time, so you just need to get used to remembering it's there.
As the previous guys said, Android is designed to not have specific 'closing' or exiting of apps. Rather, they'll hide themselves in the background and once the system needs to free up some ram it'll close once you haven't used for a while automatically in preference of those using the most RAM. It will also usually save the state of that app, so if you go to use it again and Android has already closed it, it will still appear where you left off but just take a bit longer to start since it was cleared from the background.
Most apps will fully close however if you exit by using the back button (bottom-right touch button on the phone), basically reversing your way out of the app until you hit the home screens.
Holding the Home button shows the last 6 apps you had open, whether they're still running in the background or not. It's just a quick way to jump between stuff rather than an actual task manager.
In the JM2 firmware Samsung have added a great widget and task manager app. The widget shows the number of apps still running in the background, as well as a colour for if they're draining battery or performance (ie: processing lots in the background). All you need to do is touch the widget and it'll take you straight to a list where you can close any. Very handy!
While it's easy to get obsessed with using one of the task killer apps on the market all the time, I eventually found with my old Hero that it performed just as well if you ignore what it's doing with RAM or apps since it's intelligent enough to prioritise and close appropriate background stuff without your intervention.
The only reason people were recommending task killers for the Galaxy S was because of the random lags / stalls caused by bugs in the firmware, some of which were caused by it not closing stuff or managing itself properly in the background.
My advice: JM2 firmware and just use the Samsung task manager widget as a guide to if for some reason something high-powered like a game was left open and Android didn't clean it up yet.
Phone number format
How can I change the format of the phone number which is displayed when I have an incoming call ? Thanks ?
While writing SMS, contacts displayed twice
Hi to all,
When I write an SMS and want to choose a contact, they all appear twice, even tough in the phonebook they only appear once because I ticked the option of displaying only contacts from the phone and not from the sim card.
Is there a similar option in SMS that I'm missing here?
Thanks in advance,
Itay
Glad to see this thread has taken off a bit.

Bookmarks widget on homepage on the i9505 - Why so difficult?!

Hey guys,
Hoping someone can help me out, not sure why this doesn't work for me...
I want to create 1 of my home pages similar to my previous phone, which is a full page of individual internet bookmarks (the same size as app icons). How I have gone about it (and how I have always done this), is open the basic internet browser (not chrome), go to a webpage, and then save them in my generic "bookmarks" folder.
After I have done that several times, I go to the homepage where I want the bookmarks, navigate to widgets, then drag and drop "bookmark 1x1" onto the homepage....A new screen opens titled "choose a bookmark". On this page I can see a folder "mobile bookmarks", so as there are no other options, i navigate to that folder....again nothing in there except the folder "samsung mobile", so i nav to that folder....nothing inside. There are no other folders or locations I can navigate to. WTF?!
I thought I may have saved them to a separate folder, but even when i go into the bookmark and select "edit" i can't change it to any other default folder (also tried creating a new folder and putting them in there, didn't help)
I tried going into CHROME and setting bookmarks (then saving them) and selecting them as a homepage widget, but again, i can't find anything. Along with the HUGE disappointment of no FM radio chip, I am finding the more basic options more difficult on this phone which doesn't say much for Samsung in newer generation phones. I also don't think I am a complete dumba$$, which is exactly how I feel when i ask a very basic question like this. WHY wont this work?
Thanks anyone who can help.

Phone is unbranded i9505 (4G) AU stock.
I'm using also the stock browser and if you press the menue softkey you can choose 'create shortcut'. This will create a shortcut on the homescreen It is pretty simple and works good for me. Hope this helps you.

Bookmark 1*1 point to chrome, and sbookmark point to the old android browser. Both work correct for me, and as other said, just create a shortcut (this function since android 2.x)
And for chrome just keep pressing the bookmark icon you want, then it will give you a menu to add it to home screen

Aha.
So bookarks are out the window these days, we just navigate to the webpage we want, then select "add shortcut" that seems to be the only way to get that link as a 1x1 icon on the home screen. Thanks mate, +1 for you

No.... When on a homescreen press Menu (or long-press the screen), press Add Shortcut, select Bookmark, choose the site you want.
A 1x1-sized bookmark icon shortcut will be added... :good:

Negatron. This has been answered, but I will respond to your post. On the i9505, long press homepage (or menu key), provides options:
- add apps/widgets - wont work this way
- create folder
- set wallpaper
- add/remove page (this is add or remove a homescreen page)
Long press screen options:
ADD TO HOME SCREEN:
- Apps and widgets
- Folder
- Page
None of these items/options work, so only works, for me, by going into the internet explorer app, hit menu key and then "add shortcut" instead of add bookmark...

Okay. Works, as it should, on my 9505 so no issues here :good: That is, using Apex Launcher as the option you look after is indeed not working (anymore) in Touchwiz...
Its working for me even on touchwiz..
