Hey all, I have already rooted my device and was looking in to flashing custom roms. I have started to see more and more posts about people losing their IMEI when flashing new roms and I was wondering if we could discuss how this happens. Is it safe to start flashing roms or should we wait until their is a way to backup and restore the efs?

is there a way to post this in one of the 4-5 other threads about the same topic? makes it easier to discuss without following every new thread about it.

Heya everyone
Just a small idea that came to my mind.
I know there are a few standalone apps to flash kernals and i was thinking
Is an odin flashing app possible on the sgs?
Keeping away from the pc restriction, why cant flashing be done directly from the phone? Flashing roms/kernals on the go would be amazingly helpful for testers who cant be around a pc

Flashing kernels from within android
sorry for posting in the wrong section, since it was development related thought it would be ok to post it here
that is just a kernal flasher which i am aware of
but i was suggesting more than just a kernal flasher
is it even possible to have such an app?
that way we could fix our sgs stability issues on the move n roll back to a stable froyo rom and custom kernal too
In theory it should be possible to flash from the external sd card from recovery.
I wanted to unroot and go to complete stock is there a zip or tar file or any method that will allow me to do so? Or if not whats the most stable 4.2.2 ROM out for the nexus 7? Not the 3g version ..

Is there something wrong with the sticky thread up there right at the top of this forum?
[GUIDE] Flashing a Factory Image with fastboot / return to stock
It may have been written in September, so there are new (4.2.2/JDQ39) factory images out now, but the method is essentiallly identical.
As a matter of fact, inside the factory .tgz file, there are scripts which show you exactly what the process is (flash-all.sh, flash-all.bat).
If you have previously flashed the 4.18 bootloader (and have an unlocked bootloader) you can skip those steps.
Go to the Google developers website and flash a factory image for whatever number your Nexus 7 is.
Alternatively I recommend Carbon ROM which is AOSP
Not being smart but this question has been asked on here countless times, use the search function, it will give you all the information you need

Careful with smart remarks like that. Yiure basically saying yiur tok lazy and want to be spoon fed instead of searching and learning like the rest of us. Perhaps if you took 2 seconds to open your root toolkit youd see theres an unroot button. For future reference taje the time to search hard and if you dont find it the its ok to post a thread but be warned thay the mods will shut you down and people will flame you hard. Taking the time to search and learning is much more gratifying thwn the lazy way. And youd be amazed at all the helpful things youll find and learn
Btw the solution for un rooting I gave to you was just served on a dirty silver spoon for you!

AW: Complete stock?
To be completely stock you could relock the bootloader after flashing the stock rom

We really need more active mods around here to delete retarded threads like this.
You have eyes. I assume you have a functioning brain. Use them.
@az18zz
Im shocked at the fact youre still asking these noob questions considering how long you've been on xda and the amount of posts you've made
I agree though this thread is pointless

Your mods are active, but we cannot read EVERY thread, and need the community to help us. When something like this pops up, just use the report feature, and just move on...Posting in a thread like this only bumps it to the top, keeping it more alive. Just report and move on..

First I link you to xda rules ok.

I have searched. and I explained what I've found. I also asked a specific question about rooting my phone, the specific phone I have (MDM i9505). I haven't found any solutions so far. I have been checking the forums on a daily basis more than once in recent days. you two above this post could not be less helpful. You tell me to search, when I have. If there is a root for my phone, why didn't you point me in the right direction? or is it easier to make fun of people when you don't have an answer? thanks for nothing.
Im on MDM and rooted.

ok, thanks m.nassy.uk
@muhamet, I have a question, those are rooted roms, not just rooted kernel. I have seen those. Will that mean I will loose all my apps etc? thanks both.
edit: one more question. do I have to root to install custom roms in the future? The only reason I am looking to root is to be able to install roms when I decide which one I want to run. Or do roms come with rooted kernels and all I have to do is flash them via recovery? thanks.

Actually - the guy has a very legit question so before you flame him !
I have been in these forums for years and i can honestly say this S4 thread is one of the most mixed up in here !
These rooting questions NEED TO BE MUCH CLEARER, Especially for lots of new people coming in.
Dedicated Thread only for Root I9505 And which root method works - you look around and its in original dev and Android Dev.
Same for I9500 !
Then there is stock / hybrid / custom roms, Pre rooted so no wonder these questions get asked !
Root should only be in one Forum thread for each device and not mixed !
Now im fortunate enough to know what im doing ! but there is going to be so many repeat questions asked in here that its asking for trouble and bricked devices.
It really does need cleaning up.
thx

@m.nassy.uk thanks mate, that worked, I am now indeed rooted and have recovery, ready for the roms! And I do apologize for asking what might sound like a very basic question to some of you. I hope this thread will help others, some less experienced android users. The s4 is only my 2nd ever android phone (s2 was the first) and I'm not as knowledgeable as some of you on here. Thanks again.
No problem

Completely agree as a s2 root newbie I've started to learn the ropes a bit more running custom roms on the s3 for the past year or so. The issue of two different phone models in the same area is bound to cause confusion. I have to check twice, I've loaded up the i9500 development section before not paying attention thinking it was i9505 lol.

thing is, I used ODIN to root my s2 and put recovery on it some 2 years ago, after that it was a case of downloading .zip files (roms) and flashing them via recovery so I have forgotten quite a few things about rooting etc since 2011. but hey, I'm ready now... waiting for a nice rom to come.
I jumped in and got a contract straight away on the s4 from the s3. I don't mind. I got a good deal. But in hindsight I'm going to wait a good few months for any others devices. I'll see this out on its 24 month contract by then god knows what will be out there. Hopefully some custom kernels with voltage control will be released too. Finding crackling through headphones atm.

Ok, so after rooting, recovery doesn't load anymore. Phone just boots normally. Any ideas?
Hi,
so I'm brand new to rooting and this forum. I have a Samsung galaxy s4 i9505 on the network 3 running 4.3.
I did a bit of reading up on rooting and discovered a few things I'd like to play about with on the device, battery life etc. I rooted using the Chainfire root here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219803). I don't fully understand what ROMs and Kernels are. Would someone be able to explain in simple words for my noob brain?
Also, where do I go from here now that I have rooted? As in what can I do to customize my phone with these 'ROMs' and 'Kernels'?
I know I should have done more research before rooting but its too late now.
Also I apologise if I posted this in the wrong forum and any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks.
Google.com is the answer.
A little to get you started...
You need to flash a custom recovery like CWM Philz or TWRP, From there you download a custom rom, yoy look for something in ur device thread for them. You choose what u like and try them all to see what suits you best.
Flashing custom roms instructions are in that specified rom thread follow them.
As for kernels as far I know they used for tweaks, OC, UV, battery optimization, touch, etc.
Try at your own risk.

Thanks.

And do the read, searches etc before posting.... XDA is here to aid all of us, but basics are to be learned on your own.
Before I got this phone I had the galaxy s3 and was running an AOSP ROM on it within the first hour of having the phone, I've also built a few roms myself. I'm nowhere near a noob to custom recoveries and how to odin back to stock and all of that. However I am a noob to safestrap. I was just wondering if it is possible to overwrite the stock rom with another touchwiz rom based on the current kernel without bricking the device?
This is by far the most asked question in the past week or so regarding ss. I have spent many hours researching this question. Here's what I found:
1. Several in the s5 dev threads say yes it's fine to flash to stock and appear to have successfully done it with no problems.
2. Found posts from Scott, developer of clean Rom, and he does this on his note3. http://www.scottsroms.com/showthread.php?4988-Safestrap
3. Hashcode, creator of ss doesn't seem to recommend, but he did give us the ability to flash to the stock slot.
So there. Depends on who you ask I guess. Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for your reply. I guess I'll be giving it a try and having odin ready if needed lol.
Post your experience please, I'm still undecided on flashing to stock slot.
