Hey Everyone! I've mostly been pleased with the stock keyboard packaged with Hashcode's CM9 release. However, I want a keyboard that splits down the middle when the Fire is turned into landscape mode. I'm trying out Swiftkey 3 now, and liking it so far. What keyboards have people thought were especially well suited to the fire?
Thumb keyboard

I use thumb keyboard as well.
thumb keyboard by far.. i use type 2 7" layout and it makes typing sooo much better..
Hrm ok, I'll give Thumb Keyboard a whirl next. Looks like there isn't a free version for me to try though.
Is there anyway to get a trial of the thumbs keyboard?

I use SwiftKey. I never type in landscape so it works great for me.
SwiftKey Tablet 3..... My favorite by a mile. Not only for split keyboard, but for the great work that they have done with predictions
Works great on both 10 and 7 tabs

I've tried I think all of them and I regularly switch back to Thumb Keyboard and the new Swype Beta. Thumb for landscape and Swype for portrait. If I had to choose, i'd stick with Thumb though.
I love the Swype Beta (in portrait mode). Plus the Hacker keyboard for connectbot.
Can't find Swype beta, is it under a different name?

I keep coming back to swype, in fact it was the reason I initially rooted my kindle fire.
Thanks, got it.
Not bad, but no easy a access to the asterisk *, very odd. I don't think I've ever had to search for such a basic key before :-(

I've been using both Swype Beta and Hacker keyboard for the same things. I've been through a number of keyboards and Swype beta has been my favorite for general use. I was using Thumb keyboard for connectbot until I discovered hacker keyboard a couple weeks ago and haven't looked back.

I've used Thumb Keyboard for too long to switch. Swiftkey is nice on my phone, but without all the extra characters in the center like Thumb has, I'll have to pass.
I saw Swiftkey Tablet x on market willl it work for our tab? sombody tried ?
It should work its for tablets period i havent tried it ill give it a go when i get a chance

I have a galaxy tab 7 and a galaxy tab 10.1 Swift key x works great on 10 but on 7 in gmail it locks up repeating characters. I have removed it from my 7.
Have no problem with My Gtab
I was gonna mnove this to themes and apps but theres already one there....
I already have SwiftKey 3 on my phone and love it. Should I use the phone version on this tablet or should I buy the tablet version? What's the difference?

I tried to use the phone version and it wouldn't let me, I had to download the tablet version. One of the neat features it has is a split keyboard when in landscape mode. Makes it much easier to type with.
I have the phone version of Swiftkey on another 7" tablet and love it... I was hoping to be able to use it on this one too.
TouchPal works well. Free too.

I also already paid for the phone version and installed it on my N7 without a problem through the Play store. I did get a warning about using the tablet version, but I think there was a cancel or close button. I then just activated it as an input method in Settings and went through the normal setup. I do most of my typing in portrait mode and it seems to handle the 7" screen just fine. I really like how you don't have to purchase the same apps again for different devices.

I had to switch to SwiftKey, the default android keyboard was horribly laggy for some reason. SwiftKey works just fine. I own both tablet and phone versions cause I have a 10" tab and a couple of android phones.
Is there any posiblity that swiftkey 3 could work in a SE Xperia x10 mini pro?
Swiftkey 3 Phone does work fine on the N7... just have to cancel out of the "suggestion" to use Tablet version.
I'm using the phone version and I'm on the fence whether to switch to something else. I was typing better with the stock keyboard.

I was not as lucky, I was able to install the phone version, and it launches as it should... but it just does not work after launching.
Mine was an Amazon free app of the day deal...
While I love Swiftkey on my phone, I have always liked TouchPal's layout, and it scales to the proper size on the Nexus 7, which is a benefit over Swiftkey (which is far too short). With the NightPack skin, it fits in well with JB too.
I've used SwiftKey for a very long time and it really "knows" me. Is there anyway to transfer the learning data from my old device to the Nexus 7?

You can do that using Titanium backup with app data.

Good call!
I've been using SwiftKey for a very long time and I did that as soon as I got the tablet version for N7 and it works just like my GS2 now.
go into SwiftKey's settings, find "Personalize". SwiftKey will crawl your crapbook, twitter, SMS, and/or Gmail for typing patterns. no need for TiBU.
I love Swiftkey on the phone, but the tablet version is absolutely garbage. I actually prefer the stock JB keyboard. The only thing I'm missing is the gestures from Swiftkey, I swipe back and nothing happens lol

Anyone know of the differences between the table version and phone version -- besides split keyboard of course? I installed the phone version and have no complaints so far.

Yes, I did that when I first got the app. But now, many months later, after using it all the time, it is much better. It learns as it goes. I will backup the app data, like suggested earlier.

Swype is available for Windows 7 in the Samsung Slate 7 downloads. It acted weird enough on Win7 that I didn't load it on Win8; but I bet it'll work.

yeah i asked about this earlier http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1580190 not much since then
I believe BASW-13533A19.ZIP older version had wider compatibility
Old thread, I know, but since I did not see it mentioned and I have looked myself, you might want to try TouchPal http://www.touchpal.com/en/index.html
Looks a lot like swype. The default keyboard has too many downsides for me, so I am hoping this one is better. Rather slow download though, so I havent tried yet.
All,
I've got the cm10.1 ROM on my fire and I love the keyboard where you can long press for numbers. The Nexus 7 doesn't have this stock, curiously, so I tried to pull the apk from the fire and it would install and even show up in the settings but I whenever I brought up the keyboard it didn't have the numbers. I did some searching but couldn't find anything. Any thoughts on how I could get this AOSP keyboard for the N7 w/o root?
Thanks peterb

Personally, id just change the layout of the stock keyboard to PC. I find out significantly more convenient to have the dedicated fourth row of number keys than having to long press.

How does one do that? I don't see that in any of the options menus.

OK, I figured out how to do that with the input settings menu. I've got to say, I'm not all that excited about the PC layout even though it looks like it would be perfect for a 10" tablet I think that the N7 is a bit too small. Still hoping to be able to get the keyboard from the CM10.1/SGT7 rom.
peterb
Found the answer. I did an adb pull and grabbed the LatinLME.apk from the fire. I then pushed it to the Nexus 7 to sdcard. I then opened up my file manager and it installed. Once installed I originally couldn't figure out how to activate it. I figured out that if you go into the language and input settings you can change the default to the AOSP keyboard you just installed and are then good to go. While I could have rooted it I'm wanting to keep it stock to keep getting otas. The fire is for flashing ROMs
Hope this helps someone else.

i want to know what they changed
Someone here at XDA has the update (I forgot who), why not ask them? :fingers-crossed:
I'm guessing it's probably just some bug fixes like 7.3.1, or something minor along those lines.

Bluetooth mouse is supported, I have two BT keyboards with touchpad that I've paired successfully. One is Logitech Mediaboard Pro PS3 and other Woxter K600. Its a laugh to see the little pointer in the Kindle screen....

could someone add otg support to stock?
Mass storage is the real benefit of otg, all the other connections can be made efficiently by bluetooth or wifi. I think....

Does someone know yet the changes of the new update?.
KIndle Fire HD Update is happening
Updated to 10.3.2? It seems there is even a NEWER update! :crying:
There is a new update for KF & KF HD!
KF2: 10.4.1
KF HD 7: 7.4.1
KF HD 8.9: 8.4.1
Here is the link http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custom...x36E18S96DJXEU
Here is what it says:
"We have a new, free software update available for Kindle Fire 2nd Generation, Kindle Fire HD 7", and Kindle Fire HD 8.9: In addition to bug fixes and performance improvements, the software update adds the following features to your Kindle Fire:
* Language Support for Canadian English and Canadian French - You can now change your device language to Canadian English and Canadian French.
* Show Battery Percentage in the Status Bar - You can now see the total percentage of battery life left when you enable this feature from the Device menu."
"This update automatically downloads and installs for Kindle Fire 7", Kindle Fire HD 7" and Kindle Fire HD 8.9" customers; however, you can also manually download the software and update your device using the USB cable."
. . . According to some of the posts at the site, it seems to add a digital battery meter, but not many other differences for the user (unless you're Canadian, then you get a more robust language package).
I have not been updated, but I am running Kinology now, and also my update file has been renamed!
But after root I have 1 black screen in Apex launcher. Anybody have problems like that? Methods to overcome? Please Help. Thank you very much

I`m getting black screen on all launchers, seems amazon want to make it there device, only rooted it a few days ago and it then decided to unroot itself and mess up apex laucher.
Anyway rooting was easy used UnlockRoot.com free rooting application and it seems work, superuser is back and working fine
Now I need to find out what service is Making the wallpaper black and, tried many apps to counter it but it just blacks everything out, dont fancy installing a new Rom as the amazon Rom works fine ( with another launcher ) Plus the fact I use the kindle as a kindle, so the ugly interface is handy to keep.
If anyone has solved it please post it, as I miss my Wallpaper!!!
