Going Prepaid with Quality Devices at Fair Prices - Networking

This thread is going to stay pretty small for now as we're limited, but it seems most of us are being pushed harder and harder by the asenine decisions of major carriers to move towards prepaid. Though some decent plans have come available, the main issue still seems to be extremely high prices as a number of the better devices are still only available directly from those same carriers and generally have a $500 or higher price tag. This thread is to present an easy to view point from which to find available phones that can fully utilize the latest features available. I'm hoping that within the next year this list should grow by quite a bit.

I kept the details to a minimum as all the features can be reviewed through the individual links. If anyone sees any errors or knows of any other devices that should be featured feel free to post them and I will update the OP. Hope everyone finds this helpful.

I don't think this is the purpose of the _Networking_ forum. =P
Anyway, you should see about adding your info to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1736018

This is where we have carrier discussions and discuss how we connect to those networks. A mod is free to move this as needed but I don't think there's a better place.

T-Mobile eye Long Term HSPA Evolution for 650Mbps 4G networks!!! Backward Compatible

Sure, HSPA+ is all the rage right now for T-Mobile, but what about the future? While HSPA+ can reach 42Mbps, what will T-Mobile do when LTE starts to really take off? As always, though, T-Mobile has us covered. Today T-Mobile announce a partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks to help deliver Long Term HSPA Evolution, or LTHE. We are talking speeds of 650 Mbps that could be ready by 2013, theoretically. Here I thought my HSPA+ speeds were doing the trick, not so much anymore. One of the better parts of this development is backward compatibility, so you shouldn’t need new hardware like what those other two carriers make you purchase. There are a bunch of other (really boring) facts about LTHE, but you can read those your self.

Everyome else will be on LTE. They will be in the future what CDMA is in the world today.
I'm plannimg a switch to Verizon when they launch an LTE WP7 device.

Its only backwards compatible in the sense that the Vibrant works, but doesn't support HSPA+. So in the future, the vibrant would still work on the network, and would benefit from having a larger backbone fed to each cell tower to support those speeds(ie more bandwidth means closer to max speed for each device currently on the network), but wouldn't be able to reach those speeds.
But I think its a good stratage because it does continue to make use of the current technology(ie saves money on having to buy new hardware) and it gives manufactures time to improve LTE radios so they dont suck so much(Think battery life and Verizon's problems with their usb modems that fail to switch back to LTE after going to 3g). LTE is still in its own first gen hardware, and so comes all those problems of power and size. In time the radios will be improved upon.
Also dont forget LTE isnt officially '4G', LTE Advanced(which I think isnt even finalized) is. So while Tmo squeezes as much juice as it can out of HSPA, on the side they are looking into LTE and by the time they are ready to roll it out, would be able to take advantage of updates to LTE that only time can make.

Spec as per Roger's site:
- AWS for connectivity on the Rogers LTE network
- Tri-band HSPA+/Quad-band EDGE for connectivity on the Rogers 4G HSPA+ network and international roaming
- Dual-core 1.5 GHz processor
- 4.5” WVGA Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen (480x800)
- Android 2.3 operating system
- 1GB RAM; 16GB internal memory
- 8MP rear camera with flash, 2MP front facing camera
- $199.99 with a 3-year hardware discount agreement ($649.99 No-term)
Real oddball, it has the "Samsung Galaxy S II Epic Touch Me There Galaxy, Touch My 4G-spot, Yes Yes YES!" housing, it has the SoC from the T-Mobile variant, and an LTE modem all its own.
suddenly the SGS2 section seems to be going to be a lot more busier with all the influx of these sub models

Is that correct, 3 year contract? Two years is long enough, no way on earth I would sign up for a 3 year deal. That has to be a typo.

Unfortunately no it's not a typo. Here in Canada if you want to save money on a contract, 3 years is the only option. The 2 year contract price is $549!
Another model with the inferior SoC. What a joke

[Q] Where to buy one that works in my country?

Hello, dear XDA citizens.
I had been a happy user of my HTC Desire since July 2010 when I bought it. Unfortunately, it recently started randomly losing signal, with the same ROM version I’ve been using for a while, so that means it’s time for an upgrade.
The problem I find with current options, it’s that there are no longer phones anywhere!!! More specifically, I can only see 5"+ phablets (don’t call them phones, please, at that size they no longer start being just that), which are really not what I want. I want something I can comfortably hold in one hand when vertical, that is, 4.3" minimum, 4.7" maximum... or at least that’s what I thought, until I heard of the LG G2 one-hand operations option. I’m not sure yet this option is available to AOSP or any ROM that might currently be developed for the phone, but it makes a whole difference for me, so much that it makes me skip my self-imposed maximum-screen-size ban. You’ve gotta hand it to LG, they understand exactly this predicament.
As for other features, I’d like it with LTE; my operator in Colombia says they support Band 4 - AWS, and 1900MHz for HSPA+. I’ve been away quite a while, so I’m no longer savvy, but I’ve read some articles about LTE for my operator, and while they say AWS, they also say, for example, they acquired the 1700MHz/2100MHz spectrum, or that the Nokia Lumia 920 (model RM-820 only) works. Those are some details that perhaps can help you help me assert if my choice is right. Oh, 16GB or 32GB is alright for me. Never used more than 6GB myself.
Question is: do you know where can I buy one that fits those specifications? Please paste links that you trust and recommend. It doesn’t matter if I have to “import” it, since I have relatives living in United States which luckyly will come by new year’s eve, so hopefully I can just pay the phone itself and be done with it.
I think that’d be all.
Thanks again for your support!
My international D802 doesn't support band 4 as I read the box , see the attached photo.

Oh, man, I knew it.
Looks like I need a U.S.A. AT&T-compatible phone, which are the ones I see share the 1700/2100 frecuencies. Bummer. Question, for those in United States: can I buy an AT&T-bands-compatible phone without an actual plan? In Amazon looks like I can, but I want to be sure.
Thanks for the information!
PS: The company says something like:
HSPA+, 23/10/2011, Tigo commercially launched 4G service using HSPA+, with 4 Mbps average speed at 1900 Mhz band...

Click to collapse
Since I would at least have HDSPA+, although it was implemented two years ago already, according to that, do you think I would still be able to squeeze the phone value two years from now at least? Thanks!

Discussions related to Google Pixel used/bought in/out of Philippines goes here. Please avoid OT as far as possible.
Picked up a Google Pixel 32GB from the gray market last week. Prices are still quite high. I am told the source is the India market, and the packaging and included AC Adapter seems to confirm this.
I can confirm Google Photos recognizes the Pixel and says photos and videos will be backed up at original quality. I wasn't sure it would since it's been found some features like Support don't work outside the launch countries.
I'm using the phone on Smart network, and here is the major disappointment: LTE Data flat out does not seem to work, at least in the areas where I find myself. I've set the phone to prefer 3G networks, but missing LTE speeds and coverage that I got out of the 5X (such as it is for Smart).
Finding a case for it in stores has been pretty much impossible (Spigen are only selling the XL cases), so I ended up ordering from Lazada where I found one sold by Ringke Direct.
An update on the situation with Smart LTE data: this seems fixed in the 7.1.1 update (NMF26O), or even in the Canadian update (NPF26J), as I now get mobile data in LTE preferred. I do still find spots where LTE shows no internet connection where I need to switch to 3G only. This may already be down to Smart's network as I recall in the past that my Nexus 5X had the same problem forcing me to go 3G.
I hope the local carriers would bring the Pixel here in the Philippines. Just got the OG Pixel recently and I love it. Wanting to get the Pixel 2 but it is just too pricey in grey markets and isn't covered by warranty.
